san benito high school top 10 graduates Laura Camille Cordova, this year’s valedictorian, is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Adolfo Cordova, Jr. Cordova is a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree and an Advance Placement scholar.

She has earned the distinction of being named the 2014 and 2015 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State flute player. As a member of the school’s Mighty Greyhound Band, Cordova has served as a section leader for two years. Cordova plans to attend the University of North Texas where she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Political Science and Music, specializing in flute.

Clarissa Garcia, this year’s salutatorian, is the daughter of Romeo Garcia and Ana Arenas. She was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. Garcia has also been named a state qualifier for the Business Professionals of America’s Parliamentarian team. As a member of the chess club, she and her teammates advanced to nationals in 2012 and 2014 She has served as both president and captain of the chess team, Mu Alpha Theta secretary, National Honor Society parliamentarian, and Student Council representative of the BPA Chapter 8. Garcia plans on attending Texas A&M University at College Station where she plans to pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering and establish her career with a reputable company.

Emma Maria Valle, the daughter of Henry and Robin Valle, is this year’s third ranked honor student.

Valle was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. Valle served as the captain of the golf team, where she was named Golf Champion in 2013 and 2014 and a regional qualifier in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

She is also a graduate of the National Hispanic Institute. Valle has served as the vice president of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club and Speech Club. Valle plans to attend Baylor University and major in Bioinformatics and minor in Business. She has plans to attend medical school and focus on emergency medicine.

Brianda Yanelli Lozoya, this year’s fourth ranked honor student, is the daughter of Juan Rigoberto Lozoya and Evangelina Sanchez. She completed an internship with the Business Professionals of America at their state leadership conference. She is a two-time state qualifier for BPA in the areas of Fundamental Spreadsheet Application and Advanced Spreadsheet Application. She is also a state finalist in the Parliamentarian Procedures team. She has served as the Key Club President, National Honor Society Historian, Business Professionals of American Parliamentarian, Student Council Treasure, Attendance Officer and Junior Class Vice President. Lozoya plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station and major in cell molecular biology and obtain her doctoral degree.

Kim Marie Garcia, the daughter of Rogerio and Herminia Garcia, is this year’s fifth ranked honor student. She earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. Garcia has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar.

As a line member of the Belles Drill team, Garcia has been selected to the All American Dance/ Drill Team. She has attended the National Hispanic Institute and has served as the President of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. She is a member of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Cotillion Club, the National Honor Society and the Speech Club. Garcia plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Exercise Science while specializing in medical fitness and rehabilitation.

She also wants to pursue a doctorate degree in physical therapy at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Kemberly Janett Arratia, the daughter of Victorina and Arturo Arratia, is this year’s sixth ranked honor student. Arratia earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She is a member of the South Texas Engineering Math and Science (STEMS) Club, Leo Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Club. During her freshman and sophomore years, she was on the basketball and track team. She is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Talent Search. Arratia plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station and graduate with degrees in psychology and forensic science.

Benjamin David Valle, the son of Henry and Robin Valle, is this year’s seventh ranked honor student. Valle was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. Valle has served as treasurer of National Honor Society and captain of the Golf Team. He is Key Master of the Key Club. Valle plans to attend Baylor University and major in mathematics or computer science. He also intends to pursue a career in business after obtaining his master’s degree in business.

Jorge Adrian Moreno, the son of Jorge and Mary Isabel Moreno, is this year’s eighth ranked honor student.

Moreno was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. In 2012 and 2013, Moreno was a member of the State Championship Chess team.

In 2012, he earned first place at the U.S. Chess Junior Open, earning national champion honors. His passion for music has enabled him to advance to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Solo and Ensemble competition as both a choir member and Estudiantina member. During his freshman year, he became the first freshman from San Benito to advance as a guitarist to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Competition.As a student at Miller Jordan Middle School, his team placed third at the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl Regional Competition in 2011. Moreno plans on attending Baylor University and major in computer Science with a minor in business administration. His goal is to start a software company that specializes in peer-to-peer file transfers, data management and security.

Melissa Jimenez is the ninth ranked honor student. She was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. Jimenez, a Texas Scholar, is also an Advanced Placement scholar. She is a member of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) where she was named a state finalist after competing in parliamentarian procedures. She is certified in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Jimenez has served as the President of the National Technical Honor Society, Vice President of Health Occupation Students of America, BPA Historian, Club Editor for Key Club, and Flamenco Ensemble percussionist. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Leo Club, Estudiantina, Chess Club, Masterminds and the Talent Search and Upward Bound Programs. Jimenez plans to attend the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, where she has been accepted into the A-Prime Time Program, a three-year premedicine and three-year medical school program. She plans on becoming an emergency room physician.

Sandy Martinez, the daughter of Mary Jane Martinez, is the tenth ranked honor student. Martinez was named a prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honoree for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She was also a member of the Texas Bluebonnet Girls State.

She has served as the Student Council President, San Benito Horticulture Vice-President, Junior Class President and Sophomore Class Vice-President. Martinez plans on attending Texas A&M University at College Station and pursue a four-year degree in animal science. She also plans on taking an additional four years to pursue her certification in veterinary medicine and plans to open her own veterinary practice.

honorary grads of 2015

Arlett Zamarripa is the class of 2015 Valedictorian for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Early College High School, with a GPA of 114.8609. She is the eighteen year-old proud daughter of Senaida and Arturo Zamarripa of San Juan. Zamarripa will graduate as a Texas Scholar under the Distinguished Achievement Program and has earned herself two Associate’s degrees before graduating high school; one in Psychology and the other in Mathematics from South Texas College. Over the course of her high school career, Zamarripa has acquired 91 college hours while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, earning herself Summa Cum Laude.

Zamarripa is actively involved in both her high school and community. While studying hard, Zamarripa participated in yearbook as both a photographer and writer for her page. During her senior year, she was Parliamentarian for the school’s Chemistry Club. Zamarripa has been an active member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for two years, and Psi Beta, a National Honor Society in Psychology for Community and Junior Colleges, for a year. Zamarripa has served her community by volunteering at Babies & Children’s Clinic and Family Vision Care. Over the course of her high school career, she has completed over 960 community Zamarripa’s most unique forms of giving back was when she donated over a foot of hair to Locks of Love. In addition to her accomplishments, Zamarripa has been recognized as a Rotary Student of the Month of February 2015 and also Kiwani Student of the Month of April 2015. In her sophomore year, she was the UIL Latino Essay State Finalist.

Zamarripa is also recognized as a Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Zamarripa will be attending The University of Texas at San Antonio this fall. Miss Zamarripa plans to major in Psychology, while taking pre-medical classes. Upon earning her Bachelor’s, she hopes to enter medical school and eventually become a Psychiatrist.

Logan Carlos Duran, son of Robert and Eva Duran, is Raymondville High School’s class of 2015 Valedictorian. Duran served 3 years as section leader for the Bearkat Band. He has also participated in various student organizations, such as: the National Honor Society, UIL Academics, the Technology club, Masterminds, Tennis, and the Anime club. He has accumulated over 38 college hours through AP and dual enrollment courses, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He plans on attending Texas A&M University this fall. There, he will be a part of the Engineering Honors program, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Katherynn Sandoval is the valedictorian for the 2015 graduating class at Idea Alamo Prepatory. Sandoval will be attending Barnard College, a liberal arts college for women, at Columbia University in New York City this fall. She will be studying International Relations, and her goal is to become a U.S. Ambassador to a country in South America.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

The best thing about being in my position is that I get a glimpse of what goes down behind the scenes in classrooms. Some may argue one school district is better than another. Some may dispute differences between charter schools, public schools, and private schools. While we would all agree that many factors contribute to each school’s differences, I’m happy to report that the heart of the educator is alive and well in every district I’ve visited throughout the state.

I’ve been fortunate enough to share ideas with our classroom leaders. I’ve sat in on board meetings, had coffee with the principal, and lunch with the superintendent; but most rewarding, I’ve spent time talking intimately with teachers. By far, the most common character quality I’ve run into is passion. In my experiences, the average educator’s passion is to give permission to their students to flourish into responsible and valuable citizens. And by give permission, I mean to enable, empower, and teach them to embrace growth, change, and progress.

On another note, this year has been pretty remarkable for us. This month, we celebrate our two year anniversary. I was invited to be a “Principal for a Day” at Mission ISD, and I was a judge for the San Benito CISD’s Teacher of the Year Award. I’d like to extend my most sincere gratitude to the school districts that have given us permission to share their triumphs.

Our work makes a difference because your work makes a difference.

As a member of several academic organizations such as the National Society of High School Scholars and extracurricular activities like the model United Nations, Denisce Palacios is no stranger to hard work.

at weddings and funerals in Harlingen, Port Isabel, and La Feria. When she is not lending her musical talents to the choir of St. Xavier’s in La Feria, Palacios enjoys directing the children’s choir at the same parish.

The senior at St. Joseph’s Academy in Brownsville, Texas is heavily involved in community work and numerous organizations that allows her to spend time with what she is most passionate about: performing arts.

Palacios has been a member of International Thespian Society since her sophomore year and a member of Drama Club all four years of high school.

Palacio’s work ethic has landed her several awards, including “Hardest Worker” in a 2013 play of Chicago where she played Velma Kelly. She has performed in over 10 theatre acts and has contributed over 200 hours to theatre alone.

Last year, when her formal choir program was temporarily suspended, Palacios and her peers had no outlet to perform. Determined to give herself and her peers an outlet, Palacios organized a music club that would meet during lunch hours. She is now president of that music club.

“I’ve always loved music and theatre since I was little,” Palacios said. “I started singing before I could speak, according to one of my uncles.”

As a well-known singer and guitarist for the Diocese of Brownsville, Palacios has performed

Palacios will attend UTRGV in the fall, then transfer to the University of Texas at Austin as part of The University of Texas System Coordinated Admissions Program (CAPS). She plans to double major in business and theatre.

hcisd schools of choice now accepting students across the rio grande valley

Keeping inline with its mission to provide all students with access to world-class schools, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved to open its application/enrollment process for its Schools of Choice (Early College High School, Harlingen School of Health Professions and KEYS Academy) to students across the Rio Grande Valley.

Approved during the Trustees regular meeting in March, students will now be able to apply for these innovative campuses, regardless of designated school district. For non-resident students, they may attend these campuses after participating in the campus’ application process, if applicable, and meeting the exceptional standards required in academics, attendance, and behavior.

“Our Schools of Choice offer students a unique learning experience and the opportunity to further their chances for global success after receiving their high school diploma,” said Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos. “That opportunity is now available for students across the Rio Grande Valley as they now have the chance to apply for acceptance to our Harlingen School of Health Professions, Early College High School or KEYS Academy. With the offerings provided by each campus, there is no doubt that each student will find something to meet their needs and goals. We encourage students who are interested in attending to contact their prospective campus and learn more about how they can engaged in a transformational learning experience.”

HCISD’s Schools of Choice offer students the unique opportunity to obtain their high school diploma while participating in additional educational offerings. These offerings include an accelerated start toward receiving

college hours at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) through attending ECHS, a medically focused curriculum and opportunities to work with medical professionals at HSHP or access to expedited credit accumulation programs at KEYS Academy.

Currently, ECHS serves students from 9th – 12th grade, HSHP serves 8th – 10th grade with plans to add an additional grade level until 12th is reached, and KEYS enrolls students from 9th – 12th grade.

The policy is an addition to the FDA (Local) exemptions adopted by the Board of Trustees, which allows any employee of a business within HCISD’s boundaries or any property owner with in the boundaries may send their child to HCISD schools. The policy also allows any student who has attended any school, public or private, within the district’s boundaries, to attend HCISD schools.

“Our mission is to offer all students the best education possible, and now we can say that all students, regardless of location, will have the chance to experience the worldclass Schools of Choice at HCISD,” said Board President Greg Powers. “Our Schools of Choice offer students a head start to a college education, medical career or high school diploma and we encourage all those interested to apply.

This is a great moment for our district and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on students across the Rio Grande Valley.”

linda v. alaniz Linda V. Alaniz: educator, business-owner, mother. It’s safe to say Alaniz has worn many hats in her career.

Alaniz’s versatility has landed her countless awards; most recently she was honored at The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) Women of Distinction Awards in Austin, Texas. Nominated by the executive director of Lower Rio Grande Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Hank Perkins, Alaniz was recognized for her accomplishments and contributions to business in Texas.

Alaniz established Educational Research Institute (ERI) in 2001 as the founding member from her home in Rio Hondo, Texas. In the next 14 years, ERI would grow to employ seven full-time members, four part-time members and several partnering associates. The business now resides in Harlingen in a 2,500 square foot facility.

ERI’s mission is “to help organizations achieve success in their communities through various means such as: research, grant writing, grant management, and maintain state and federal funding.” Linda Alaniz and ERI have secured and managed over 225 million dollars for more than 250 districts, charter schools, college, universities, municipalities, and nonprofits. With over 658 successful grants under her belt, Alaniz has met and surpassed her business mission.

Linda Alaniz graduated from Rio Hondo High School before pursuing a bachelor of science at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi. She returned to the Rio Grande Valley to pursue a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from The University of Texas Brownsville. Alaniz has been an educator for numerous campuses across the region including: TSTC, UTPA, Region One ESC and her alum UTB and Rio Hondo High School.

In the midst of heavy issues facing the school district, San Benito CISD has continued to stay afloat as their new superintendent leads them into a new era.

As the lone finalist in San Benito’s search for a new superintendent, Dr. Marc Puig’s arrival to San Benito CISD back in January was well-received from board members, administration, staff, and community alike.

A life-long Texan, Puig studied at The University of Arlington for his bachelor’s and master’s before completing his doctorate of education at The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Puig was the superintendent of Culberson County-Allamoore ISD in Van Horn, Texas, a small town 70 miles east of El Paso, before his relocation to San Benito. Puig admits that even though there are plenty of fun activities to do in The Valley, he hasn’t had time to enjoy them, quickly adding, “Other than the people, and being immersed in the people, and being out in the community attending our events.” He continued, “There is a genuine authenticity about the people here unlike any place I’ve ever been.” Puig’s passion for serving children comes from personal experience.

As a child, Puig was a self-described “wayward kid”. He credits his teachers for the constant mentoring and leading him down the right path. Now, as a superintendent, he has come full circle and finds the experience rewarding. “...I get to give back to this profession and it just means so much to me,” said Puig. “From this chair here, we get to set the tone and set the climate for an entire group of people that serve kids everyday. I get to do that everyday, and so in a sense, we are impacting the future. We are setting the direction for not just our community here in our state, but our nation. And everyday that drives me.

Edinburg CISD lauds accomplishments of its 143 Advanced Placement Scholars ECISD Public Information

Edinburg Consolidated ISD’s “Commitment to Excellence” goes above and beyond the success of its schools and students in academics, fine arts, and athletics.

Edinburg school trustees and administrators are proud of how Advanced Placement students from Edinburg High School, Edinburg North High School, Johnny Economedes High School, and Robert Vela High School have met the challenge of advanced studies.

The College Board has recognized 143 Edinburg CISD students with Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams administered in the spring of 2014.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 22 percent of the 2.2 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

Edinburg CISD is the only district in the nation with three of four existing high schools (as of 2012) receiving the Gaston Caperton College Board Inspiration Award for graduating significant numbers of students at the highest levels of academic achievement.

“The number of AP Scholars from our four Edinburg high schools recognized by the College Board reflects our

administration’s efforts to raise the bar for students taking advanced studies,” said Dr. Rene Gutierrez, Edinburg CISD Superintendent of Schools. “The increased numbers of Edinburg students meeting the higher expectations placed on them demonstrates their willingness to invest in their education and their future.”

Dr. Gutierrez said, “Edinburg CISD provides a rigorous coursework for its AP students. AP students make sacrifices to have time to study in order to excel and reach high standards. Their commitment, dedication and hard work is no less than extraordinary.”

Through 34 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admission process.

Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP Exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions.

More than 3,600 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a three or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from one to five, with five being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

Edinburg CISD’s Top 10 Percent represent the ‘Best and Brightest’

dinburg CISD’s Top 10 Percent of the Class of 2015 from Edinburg High School, Edinburg North High School, Johnny Economedes High School, and Robert Vela High School represent the “Best and Brightest” of graduating seniors.

This special group of seniors and their parents were invited to a special luncheon April 28th at the McAllen Convention Center.

“Our district and our school board are proud of these amazing young men and women,” said Dr. René Gutiérrez, Superintendent of Schools. “The academic brilliance of these graduating seniors from our four high schools demonstrates their aptitude for excellence and their determination to meet the challenges head-on and not stop until they have reached success,” said Dr. Gutiérrez.

“Their commitment, hard work, and dedication have set them apart from their peers,” said Dr. Gutiérrez.

“These 200 honor students have met the challenge of rigorous curriculum, tougher STAAR standards, End-of-Course Exams, Advanced Placement Tests, Dual-Credit Classes, and are ready to graduate from high school, succeed in college, and enter their chosen careers with the skills to compete on the global level.”

Hidalgo County District Attorney, Ricardo Rodriguez, a graduate of Edinburg High School, delivered the keynote address to the elite group of seniors at the luncheon. He challenged the seniors to go out and make the world better.

During the luncheon, the Top Five Seniors from each graduating class were recognized with a special honor cord to wear over their cap and gown at the 2015 commencement ceremonies and with a recognition certificate.

EHS Principal Yesenia T. Molina, ENHS Principal Mark Micallef, JEHS Principal Dr. Anthony Garza, and RVHS Principal Sylvia Ledesma also presented their respective Top 10 Percent honor seniors with an honor cord and recognition certificate.
