Ambar LoRusso Interview RENOWNED MAKEUP ARTIST

T

he newest face in the international cosmetic industry now in the Rio Grande Valley. We know Ambar is a very charming, beautiful and humble young lady, we have seen her work, she has stunned professionals on the runway and cosmetic industry in USA, Mexico and Europe with her unique, flawless adventurous and innovative artistry that is why we decided to get together and have an interview with her to get to know her better...

How would you describe your unique makeup style?

I love to exalt woman’s beauty, I believe the true beauty is in the eyes of every bride, so my style brings out the very vest version of every woman that seats on my chair, my style resembles glow, flawless, elegance and the unique nature of every bride’s essence..

Where did you study your career?

I have had the blessing of learning from the best Makeup artists in the world, and the best Aesthetics professionals in Usa, Mexico and Europe

Being so young and successful, how old were you when you started?

I was born in Methuen, Massachussets but I spend my early childhood in Mexico, my Mom was a pioneer in the industry as well as my grandmother, owner of one of the best beauty salons in Mexico, so I am used to being around health and beauty since I was a kid. When I turned sixteen I became passionate about skin care first, makeup and cosmetology followed.

What other talents do you have and what do you like to do when not working?

I am a certified Aesthetician so every client’s skin is a blank canvas for me to prepare. I love photography, exercising, reading and learning new trends, my passion is to know the ingredients and the newest trends to nurture my client’s skin. I also love to serve at my church, I believe we only reach excellence when we give back to God all the blessings we receive from him, so I do it every time I can.

Where is your Makeup Studio?

At a very special place! The New Salon and Spa at Renee’s of Sharyland, I consider it as a magical place where our clients feel pampered so they can shop beauty products, the latest in fashion and accessories, eat delicious food at our cafe and get beautiful in our salon and spa, all in one place! We are positive, passionate and a very united team who always strive for excellence.

Are there any futures plans for your career?

Absolutely! Soon we will be attending the Fashion Week at Dubai, I am so honored to have been chosen to represent The New Salon at Renee’s of Sharyland, as a makeup director at the runway this fall 2018. I am willing to bring my experience to this side of the world! We have an upcoming surprise together with Manuel Tiscareno Bridal couture, he is an incredible human being and the best bridal wear designer I have known! He is passionate for his brides, we share a vision together, he sees a work of art in every bride just as I do in my skin care and makeup design, so we will soon announce a great surprise that I cannot talk about it just yet.. And more to come... the beat continues!!! www.instagram.com/ambarlorusso | www.youtube.com/ambarlorusso www.facebook.com/reneesofsharyland | www.instagram.com/reneesofsharyland

A

fter dating for more than ten years our fairytale wedding finally happened February 24, 2018. That day in the presence of my family, and friends and with our fur babies by our side we became Mr & Mrs Israel Vela. I wanted every detail to be special and unique and was so excited throughout the planning process. Thank goodness for my wonderfully talented wedding planner for kee couple had previously received some of their holy sacraments. I spent the morning of my wedding day getting primped and pampered in the spacious bridal suite of the stately plantation style house where our wedding was taking place. Along with my loving mother and beautiful bridesmaids it was a relaxing start to a joyous eventful evening. I was overwhelmed with emotion as I stepped into my exquisite two in one gown with detachable skirt. An elegant piece by George Elsissa of Australia, the gown boasted a delicate illusion neckline and sleeves accented with beaded lace embellishments. The bodice was bead and jewel encrusted lace in a form fitting mermaid silhouette with a cathedral length train. Attached at the waist was a full ball gown skirt also in cathedral length, with beading, lace, and jewels to compliment the bodice, which I chose to wear for our ceremony. I opted for a one-of-a-kind custom made headpiece by Maria Elena Headpieces of Australia to which I attached my billowy tulle veil. I chose to wear minimal jewelry, only my wedding rings and a special gift given to me by my thoughtful husband as we quietly prayed together, in that moment I knew that God had brought us together for a reason. My sweet husband gifted me a glistening pair of Tiffany & Co. pearl and diamond earrings that added just a touch of sparkle. To top off our wedding look, we had one more sweet accent that we showed off our couple status, we both donned a pair of Christian Louboutin’s. While I spent the morning with my ladies, Israel spent his with the men in the wedding party, groomsmen, cousins, brothers, and nephews all there to help him prepare for this big day we had ahead of us. They got all dapper and dashing at the Hilton Garden Inn not far from our wedding venue.

FEBRUARY 24, 2018 It was very important to us that our beloved dogs were a part of our celebration, and had to search for a ceremony location that made that possible, we settled on a beautiful church in Weslaco. The altar was draped in white chiffon and blanketed with roses and white hydrangeas. As the violins played our ever faithful Yorkies paraded down the aisle before me. Then as I stood before God, my family and my soon-to-be husband I felt proud to be able to express my love in His house. We exchanged traditional vows in a double ring ceremony our dream of becoming man and wife had finally come true. We exited the church with much jubilation and were whisked away in a classic car to a private photo session with our wedding party. When we arrived at Casa Los Ebanos, we, our wedding party, and photographers captured some fantastic photos of us, and our closest people. Followed by our grand entrance to Halo by Beyonce. The tent and décor was stunning. Angelic white florals with abundant gold accents, it was just what I wanted, “Simple Elegance.” The smell of roses, orchids, and peonies was intoxicating and it felt like we were floating on air. We were served a delicious plated dinner, and our guests were given a sweet treat with a self serve dessert bar. Our decadent tiered cake was to die for, covered in fluffy white frosting and accented with touches of gold. The many layers of vanilla, almond, and strawberry were delighting to the palate. The grooms cake was a tangerine dream, in an adorable fishing theme, a nod to my new husbands favorite pastime. To keep our guests entertained we chose quite a few different musical options, from the classic quartet at our ceremony, the lively mariachis, an upbeat banda, a live band and the bumpin’ DJ that kept the party going all night. Our guests also struck a pose in a fun photo booth with tons of kooky props, to capture everyone’s festive attitude! We didn’t even need to have an after party as our guests stayed late into the night liberally enjoying libations, and one of our gifts were cute hangover kits. When our night came to an end it was the perfect finale to a spectacular day, going to sleep with my knew husband was a dream come true!

n front of our closest family and friends, Joshua and I exchanged rings and expressed our love for each other. Although we had been sealed earlier in the summer in one of our religions temples in Fort Collins, Colorado, this ring ceremony was something special that we wanted them to be able to witness. Having my father walk me down the aisle to the man I wanted to spend forever with is a memory I will always cherish. Our reception was laid back, full of laughter and had lots of dancing! My parents pulled most of it together themselves, from the décor to the food, and it turned out beautifully. Our waffle bar and homemade taco stations were a hit. I was so pleased with how everything came together; from the macrame backdrop that I made, to the beautifully simple cake to the sparkler sendoff… everything was perfect and Joshua and I couldn’t be happier to start our lives together.

reston and I have made Austin our home for the last 10 years so we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. With most of my family coming from the Rio Grande Valley and his family coming from California, it was important to us that everyone enjoy the city we call home, as well as the beautiful surrounding hill country. The day started out with sunny, blue skies. We exchanged our vows at St. Austin Catholic Church. Cocktails, dinner, and dancing took place at Prospect House located a short drive outside of Austin, in Dripping Springs, Texas. Simple, with crisp clean lines, Prospect House is a modern venue right in the middle of Texas hill country. Our venue was nothing short of breathtaking. We enjoyed a delicious plated dinner with Moscow Mules as our signature cocktail. We had tasty desserts from our local favorite shops, Amy’s Ice Creams and Hayley’s Cakes and Cookies. There was plenty of fun to be had with the typewriter poet and photo booth. To top off our wedding we danced the night away with a live band. Preston and I truly had the day and night of our lives. Now the next adventure begins!

M

any couples today are opting for outdoor weddings, which although beautiful come with their own set of challenges. Couples must be mindful of their wedding date and season, be informed of local weather on their preferred event date, and consider subjecting their guests to the elements. One of the best options for couples today is tent rentals, which are now available in a variety of materials and styles to suit each individual couples needs. Even if you are pretty sure you will have beautiful weather on your wedding day it is always recommended that you have a “rain plan” and have a tent vendor on standby. OO OO OO OO

Get Coordinated EVENT PLANNING

T

he hard work that goes into creating a wedding celebration can be a tedious affair, with many vendors to contact and details to remember. This is where the need for wedding coordinators and designers has grown exponentially. To keep organized and to relieve the stress of planning her special day, a bride should consider hiring a wedding coordinator for the entire planning or just the Day Of, a beneficial service that comes with many perks.

OO A coordinator can help you keep within your budget and find you the best deals when contracting with a vendor. OO Their designing skills can create your overall wedding day look, from colors to centerpiece designs. OO They can schedule your appointments with the bridal boutique for your dress fittings and your cake tasting day with the baker.

OO C oordinators will take the lead making sure all vendors arrive on time, all decor and place settings are complete, and you, your fiancĂŠ, and entire wedding party are on time, keeping your mind at ease for the day. OO After the wedding, the coordinator can finalize payments with vendors and all belongings, such as your guest book, gifts, and dress, are taken back to your home.

As you can see, these are just some of the benefits of hiring a wedding coordinator and designer, for they serve as your guide, advisor, and miracle worker that can leave you free to enjoy celebrating your nuptials.

Love Notes INVITATION ETIQUETTE

Save-the-Dates

Save-the-dates are casual, enjoyable announcements of your engagement with your wedding date! It’s a less formal way to let your friends and family know that you are ready to take the next step in life as a married couple and to prepare for the big celebration. These are generally sent out 6-8 months before the wedding, 12 months if you are having a destination wedding. Save-the-dates are sent to everyone you plan to invite.

Invitations

The wedding invitation is a statement all on its own. It conveys the style and formality of your wedding as well as provides the necessary information of your celebration, with date, time, location, and reply information. The invitations are sent approximately 8-10 weeks before the wedding, 12 weeks for a destination wedding.

Beautiful and quality stationery is used in the wedding invitation. Typeface, or font, and special techniques are used for printing invitations as well. This can include letterpress, embossing, engraving, calligraphy, or digital printing.

Thank You Cards Thank you cards are a thoughtful and personal way to show your sincere gratitude to your friends and family who joined you in your wedding celebration and for their generous gift. Normally blank stationery, they should be simple, elegant, and handwritten. Order a quantity of these when you order your save-thedates; the earlier the better. It is good etiquette to send a thank you note within 2 weeks of receiving a gift before the wedding, while a thank you note should be sent no later than one month after your honeymoon for gifts received the day of the wedding.

A

s a little girl, I grew to love the “Happily Ever After” ending in every fairytale. I was lucky enough to find mine years after it had been right in front of me. Caleb & I went to school together in Jr High and never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined, back then, that he would be my person. As we grew, a friendship was formed, and we kept in contact after high school. I’ll never forget knowing that August afternoon, just months after reuniting, that he’d be the man I’d marry and spend forever with. On the morning of our wedding day, a peace came over me as we were all pampered at a posh upscale salon, excitedly awaiting the moment I’d walk down the aisle. After six and a half years, it was finally time for Caleb & I to become husband and wife. The ceremony could not have been more perfect, with my aunt singing as my dad walked me down the aisle. The rustic feel and sweet smell of peonies was exactly as I’d imagined. My florist was an absolute Godsend and made sure that every inspirational picture I showed her was brought to life for our big day. The reception continued the rustic chic feel of our ceremony with beautiful wooden barrels draped in pink, coral, and candlelit white fragrant flowers and greenery, beckoning family and friends into the grand ballroom. Guests enjoyed cocktail hour before dinner was served, and the party began. The tiered wedding cake, created exactly like the sketch, was dripping in looms and absolutely decadent. As we entered the ballroom under a canopy of lush greens and fragrant flowers, being introduced as Mr. & Mrs. Caleb Villarreal felt incredibly surreal. The celebration with family and friends began with dancing and well wishes. After our sparkler sendoff, in the quiet of our limo ride, we realized our “Happily Ever After” was forever.

ur wedding day was everything I could have imagined and more. It meant so much to the both of us to celebrate this day with our family and friends that traveled from near and far to be here for the big day. Our ceremony was at beautiful Catholic in Edinburg, TX followed by cocktail hour and reception at a fabulous modern venue nestled in the brush country. We first fell in love with the venue for its uniqueness. As you drive through the grand entrance you’ll see wildebeests on both sides, beautiful terrains and finally the Spanish style guest

house and event center overlooking a beautiful body of water perfect for photographs. I was able to wear my dream dress which was a princess style designed by Ysa Makino. The lace mantilla I chose was a cathedral length, Spanish traditional piece that felt very special to wear. We spent most of the night on the dance floor and had a lot of great laughs watching everyone celebrate. We truly enjoyed every detail of our special day and couldn’t be more grateful to everyone that made our day magical for us.

W

hen it came time to start planning her Sweet 16 they didn’t really have a theme but slowly leaned towards a natural vibe when it came to decor. The colors they fell in love with were greens, lilac, purple, champagne, dusty pinks, and white. Linda’s dress was a light blush color, with a pearl and bead encrusted bodice, which complemented the ruffled chiffon skirt. Oddly enough she actually wore her everyday stud earrings because she had recently gotten a second ear piercing and didn’t want anything too extravagant. She wore her favorite cross necklace, because it always makes her feel closer to God. Last but not least she wore her favorite Pandora ring. Initially she didn’t plan to have a second outfit, and had hoped to wear the dress all night but as the evening went on she opted to switch to one of her dance outfits.

Her court included 9 chamberlains and damas and her escort the main chamberlain. The group was made up of her closest friends and family and she had a blast working with them during the summer. After attending a formal mass at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, her guests made their way to Mayrin Banquet Hall for the evening reception. For the her special dances she chose “Tú Sangre en mi Cuerpo” to dance with her father, “My Girl” with her brother and “No Crezcas Más” with her grandparents Ramon Ayala and Arturo Perez. There was no “Surprise Gift” but she was more than grateful for the fantastic party and being able to celebrate with family and friends. Her guests enjoyed a photo booth, a scrumptious sweets table, and live music by her grandfather Ramon Ayala y Los Bravos del Norte, her cousins also played throughout the evening. To end the night she was serenaded by her little brother to “Las Mañanitas” on accordion.

Explore Outdoors VENUES

M

odern couples have their pick when it comes to wedding locations, and one more popular choice is the outdoor venue. With many couples choosing to move their celebration al frescodécor options, logistics, and attire are all moving away from super traditional, and adopting a more natural, whimsical feel.

Popular outdoor décor includes rustic farm tables, sturdier seating, large billowy arches and arbors and other natural structures. The use of wine barrels, assorted lanterns and eclectic lighting, as well as birch branches, tree stumps, leaves, rocks, and pine cones are all being incorporated into these types of weddings. If your outdoor venue has several spots to enjoy or if your ceremony and reception are being held on opposites sides of the property chalkboard and hand lettered signs have also become a cute addition to event décor. While being outdoors can pose some challenges, many couples have come up with fun and innovative solutions; such as sweet treat tables that don’t sit out all night, food stations with attendants, fire pits and pashminas for colder weather, and bug spray buckets and hand fans for warmer climates. Weather will always be a factor when choosing your outdoor venue so it is advisable to have a backup plan. Have a tent on standby with a local rental company should it rain, have parasols and cold beverages readily available to keep guests from overheating, rent or buy propane tower heaters and check with your venue if they can accommodate your party indoors should the need arise. Outdoor weddings come in varying degrees from a fun fairytale forest fiesta, to a sunny beachside soiree modern couples are straying further and further away from what was once considered “traditional” and are making these unique events their own.

A

MAY 5, 2018

fter a year of planning, May 5th, 2018 had finally arrived. The day we vowed to say “I do.” Adrian and I exchanged vows in the presence of our Priest, Fr. Roy and our closest family and friends at a picturesque Catholic Church in Mission, TX. As the double doors opened and the trio began to play, my Father and I began to walk down the aisle, adorned with beautiful florals pieces, yet all I could focus on was my future husband waiting for me at the altar. It literally felt like it was just him and I in that church. After we exchanged our vows we drove off in a beautiful vintage car towards our Mediterranean inspired outdoor venue. We arrived at The Grove Wedding & Event Venue where Adrian and I were blown away by the beautiful décor. Every detail we had chosen, from the lush floral arrangements to the rustic farmhouse tables, was just perfect; it was our dream come true. It was exciting to see the personal touches such as, the bar, backdrop, beer garden and cross my husband built for our special day. Our night was filled with laughter, joy and love from our family and friends. It was everything that we could have ever asked for. We were overwhelmed by the beauty of it all and wish we could re-live it over and over again. Adrian and I are forever grateful to everyone who made our vision come true. We are blessed beyond words and are excited to see what our future holds for us.

ustin and Alexandra come from two different cultures, but are both RGV natives. They attended different colleges and connected through a mutual friend and then Facebook. After their first lunch date that lasted all day long, they knew they had found their match. Casa Los Ebanos was the most beautiful venue for this outdoor naturalistic themed wedding, accented with touches of gold and cornflower blue, where Austin and Alexandra become one on May 27, 2018. During their Christian ceremony in front of the glistening lake, we washed each other’s feet and vowed to serve and love each other for the rest of our lives. Their reception was centered under the beautifully lit trees, and incorporated some of the best Texas BBQ, an unforgettable dance party, and the singing of the Aggie War Hymn. They closed the night with a classic sparkler send off to end the best day of their life, a day filled with joy, love, and support from all around.

A

fter meeting through mutual friends and eventually attending school together, roughly a year and a half ago we became engaged, certain that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. The wedding would’ve come sooner, but we put it on hold as we welcomed the birth of our daughter. It seemed fitting that we wait so that our own daughter could be a participant in the wedding as our little flower girl. Our small yet intimate affair took on a life of its own throughout the planning process. Saying “I do” was the easy part, we knew we were meant for each other long ago, but something about the day just makes your heart pound. It came and went in a flash, like the whole thing was a time lapse. After the ceremony it was smooth sailing. Take pictures, sit down and enjoy delicious food, socialize, cut cake and hear a few toasts at the end. It was a satisfying end, locking in our sleeping daughter and riding home to continue our mundane lives now in matrimony. It was bliss.

Rest Assured ROOM BLOCKS

I

O

O

O

f you have ever attended a wedding out of town, then you know the difficulty of reserving a room for overnight accommodations. If your guest list is significantly high, consider reserving a block of hotel rooms for a simple and easy reservation process.

O

O

The number of rooms will be based on the number of out of town guests invited. If it is a large number, consider booking with two or three hotels in the same area. Inquire about the best deals for those who book in the room block for your event. Some hotels offer a discount rate, a free room for you and your fiancé, or maybe no discount at all. Confirm the exact check-in and check-out times as they may affect when your guests will arrive. Depending on the times, your guests will know whether to check-in the day of or day before the wedding.

Some hotels offer shuttle service with notice and complimentary breakfast, perfect convenience for your guests. One expense to look for is attrition , a penalty fee for unused and non-booked rooms. If you can’t avoid signing this clause, make sure your contract includes a provision with a deadline to adjust the room blocks. It will give enough time for guests to reserve, and you to make any final changes.

Book a few months in advance to avoid unavailable rooms and inquire about suitable room rate fees. Remember to give the hotel staff a thank you note for their services and hospitality. Without them your guests would not have a warm and comfortable bed to curl up in after a long night of wedding festivities!

Michael Stephans I’ve worked in private clubs, restaurants, grocery store chains and higher education as Program Chair for Culinary Arts program at Ivy Tech State College. My niche market became convention centers. I really enjoy preparing and coordinating foodservice for large events. I also like the variety of the events and being involved in feeding performers who entertain at the various arenas and theaters I have worked. Having grown up in Chicago, I was exposed to a variety of foods from many cultures. I would say that is what represents my style of cooking. I am fascinated with flavors from around the globe and exploring regional foods and try to incorporate those flavors in my menu selections. The Valley is full of those regional foods and I am excited to tap into those flavors. I am a long-time member of the American Culinary Federation and a Certified Executive Chef with the organization. When I moved to Texas, I immediately became involved with the Texas Chefs Association. These organizations offer opportunities with continuing education as well as great networking experiences and involvement in the community.I am happy to be an active member of the Rio Grande Valley Chefs Association and a resident of this vibrant community.

Let’s taco ‘bout a Fiesta LET THE PARTY CONTINUE

T

ranslated to English, it means something like a wedding return, but la Tornaboda is actually quite familiar to American couples. It’s a smaller gathering of close family and friends that takes place after the larger wedding reception, something we’d liken to an after party. The tradition began in Mexican communities where weddings were essentially an open invitation for all to come and eat and dance, so a reception might be hundreds strong. La Tornaboda allows couples to celebrate with their nearest and dearest after the bigger fiesta is done. Mexican food you can find at la Tornaboda include:

Many couples are now also opting to have other types of food at these after parties, hiring food trucks with a variety of choices from burgers, pizza, omelets, nachos, corndogs, and sushi.

Before We Do, We Dine REHEARSAL DINNER

T

he day before the wedding a rehearsal with the bridal party and officiant is required to ensure that everyone knows their “part” for the wedding ceremony. After the rehearsal it is generally a courtesy to host a dinner, or what is commonly known as the rehearsal dinner. The rehearsal dinner is a traditional festivity where you can enjoy a lovely meal and unwind before the wedding day. It is usually hosted by the groom’s parents, and the guest list includes immediate family members of the bride and groom, the wedding party and their spouses, and the wedding officiant. Sometimes, special outof-town guests and the parents of younger wedding party members are invited as well. Today, rehearsal dinners are becoming less formal and taking a casual approach. Popular dinners can include BBQs, cozy Southern comfort dishes, spicy Mexican cuisine, and many endless choices! Of course there is nothing wrong with a formal but relaxing dinner in a favorite restaurant of choice. However you decide to have your rehearsal dinner, it should be a time for yours and your fiancé’s families to become familiar and friendly with one another, and for you both as a couple to take a deep breath and look forward to your special day. Stefano’s Brooklyn Pizzeria in Harlingen, TX, an ideal rehearsal dinner location, is officially endorsed by the world famous Italian Chef, Santo Bruno and Home to the 30” inch Pizza! Their Italian cuisine cooked by certified chefs is superb, their fully renovated restaurant includes a wide variety of Italian dishes, a large outdoor bar-patio that can host a live band, an elegant dinert, business conference, private reservation room with indoor mix bars.

O

ur wedding day started perfectly, we had an amazing team from a local day spa and salon come in do hair and makeup for the wedding party and everyone looked stunning. After getting ready for our big day we were picked up in a pristine party bus which was such a relief not having to worry about the wedding party to getting to the venues on time! The ceremony was at St. Albans and they were so kind and generous with accommodating our needs. Standing at the altar with the love of my life and forever best friend surrounded by all of my loved ones is a feeling I will never forget. We concluded our night at a rustic inspired event center and had a beautiful reception. Our florist did an incredible job with our floral touches, as did our decorator with the linens that I must have changed 20 times, her patience was truly a blessing. We are so blessed to have had such a tremendous amount of help from all of our family and friends. The whole day was a complete dream!!

Just For Him GROOM’S CAKE

T

he history of the Groom’s Cake dates back to the Victorian era. Originally chosen was the liquor infused fruitcake that was deemed more appropriate for the groom and his groomsmen. Traditional wedding cakes were considered too feminine and thus the groom’s cake with stronger richer flavors was displayed on a separate table and cut and served to the males in the wedding party. This led to smaller cakes baked and served to the bridesmaids as well, another tradition was that a piece of the Groom’s Cake was cut and put into decorative boxes and given as gifts to the unmarried female wedding guests. Times have changed and although it is no longer common to see fruitcake served, the tradition of serving heartier, thicker, and bolder flavors such as chocolate, red velvet, and rum cake have replaced their predecessor. Grooms are now opting to show off their style with decorative, flavor filled cakes in fun playful shapes and styles. They often reflect a favorite sports team, hobby, job, or pastime and the creativity doesn’t stop there, kooky themes such as dinosaurs, sci-fi movies, and favorite video games have been used as well. Now served as a second flavor choice available to all guests at the wedding, the days of the small fruitcake are long past. Often ordered at the same time as the wedding cake, grooms can choose a complimentary flavor, or just go with their favorite, and they can collaborate with their local bakers who love making these fun ideas a reality.

Take A Slice

CAKES & SWEETS

Many different factors affect the price of your cake. Here is what to know:

Size

Cake and confection prices are generally broken down into per serving costs, with a greater number of servings leading to an increase in the price.

Shape

Cakes come in a variety of shapes that may impact the cost hearts, scalloped ovals, squares, hexagons, diamonds, and more!

Flavors

More traditional flavors like chocolate, white, yellow, and vanilla, cost less than the specialty liquor flavors such as rum

Fillings

Most fillings are included in the price of the cake, however specialty fillings such as cream cheese or ganache may cost extra, and the price of fresh fruit fillings may fluctuate seasonally.

Icing

Some bakers may charge more for some frostings than others based on their specialty. Choices usually include buttercream, chocolate buttercream, cream cheese, whipped frosting, fondant, flavored fondant, and rolled chocolate. Size Shape Flavor Fillings Icing Specialty Decorating Toppers Delivery & Setup Rentals Anniversary Tier

1 1 0 CELEBRATES 15 YEARS • VALLEYWEDDINGPAGES.COM

Specialty Decorating

Bows, draping, blown sugar, pulled sugar, gumpaste flowers, and paintings are a beautiful way to add personalized designs to your cake and are typically priced per design.

Toppers

Flowers, cake jewelry, figurines and fondant creations can coordinate with your theme and offer the ultimate in personalization.

Delivery & Setup

This is usually included if within a certain distance. Arranging flowers on the cake may or may not be a part of setup.

Rentals

Additional rentals affect the price and typically require a security deposit.

Anniversary Tier

This may be included in the price. Sometimes bakers offer a fresh tier on your anniversary instead.

Choosing the best wedding cake depends on your own likes and dislikes, the wedding theme, and your budget. Once you’ve got some idea of the type of cake you’d like, you’ll need to work out how much money you have to spend on the cake. Be realistic and compare the prices of various cake vendors. Don’t rush this step – take time to compare and contrast the different styles and specialties provided by each baker. Be sure to give yourself plenty of planning time to get the dream cake you always wanted.

hoosing the right vendor to do hair and make up for your special day can be a little stressful. Sometimes brides have a favorite stylist or makeup artist, sometimes this is the first time you will need to have your hair and makeup formally done, whichever is the case it is always a good idea to do a hair and makeup trial. You can set up your trial appointment as soon as you get engaged or just a few months from your wedding date. Many brides opt to use their hair and makeup trial for their engagement or couples photos, some do it for their bridal shower or bachelorette party, either is a fantastic idea, just be sure that you plan early enough that if you are unsatisfied or unhappy you have time to look for a different hair dresser or makeup artist.

Tips O

Book your appointment early

O

Have more than one hair and makeup trial

O

Be aware of cost for both trial and wedding day services

Stick to styles for your hair length and texture

Choose makeup that compliments your skin tone and wedding season

pril showers bring May flowers, a day 11 years in the making had finally arrived and it was pouring outside. Waking up with my bridesmaids by my side we reviewed the weather, decided it was good luck and headed to the venue for hair and makeup. Luckily, our amazing venue director/wedding planner had already been working on Plan B, there is a beautiful smaller hall that seats about 150 guest that she quickly transitioned into a chapel complete with seating, lights and sound for our ceremony, it was beautiful. With our amazing and supportive family and friends surrounding us, our pastor pronounced us husband and wife, a moment we will forever cherish. Walking into our reception was like a dream, from the gorgeous gold leaf linens to the overflowing arrangements of hydrangeas on the tables there was nothing more we could have possibly asked for. After dinner, my husband and I shared our first dance followed by hilarious and heartfelt toasts from our very best friends. Once the band started playing it was hard to get anyone off the dance floor, they were amazing and so entertaining! Somehow the evening got away from us, it was just so enchanting and then it was over. We are so grateful to have been able to experience such a beautiful day, I know we and our family will treasure all of the wonderful memories that were created that evening.

ric and I first met at his brothers wedding in 2011. At the time, Eric was on active duty with the Army while studying at the University of Texas at Austin and I was studying at The Pennsylvania State University. It was love at first sight for both of us. After spending a few days together, we both went back to college and continued talking for a few months until we lost contact after Eric left for military training. I didn’t believe in fate until our paths crossed again in law school. I had just finished my first year at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston when I found out that Eric was enrolled at my school and would be starting his first year of law school in the fall. We both had butterflies in our stomachs on the first day of school that following year because we knew we would finally see each other again. When Eric and I saw each other, all of the feelings we had from the first time we met came back. After about 30 minutes, I recieved a text from an unsaved number. It turned out to be Eric, who still had my phone number memorized. Over the next few weeks of law school, we fell madly in love all over again. Although, to be honest, we never fell out of love. Two years later, Eric asked me to marry him in the most amazing and unforgetable way. Red velvet curtains were draped over the walls and the room was filled with red roses and floating candles. As if I wasn’t stunned enough, when Eric got down on one knee, sparklers went off all around us as the live saxophone player was playing. To make it even more special, we celebrated by drinking 2002 Dom Perignon champagne (our favorite) with our family who was there to see the entire proposal. Eric’s proposal was incredibly thoughtful and a perfect memory that will stay with us forever. We could not be more excited for our wedding in October!

Monica Santoyo & Darryl Rivers Photography by  ADORE PHOTOGRAPHY

M

onica and Darryl were separated by 1,297.7 miles. Darryl was a retired Police Officer and business owner in Phoenix AZ while Monica was experiencing great success in Brownsville as an entrepreneurial businesswoman. Little did they know their paths would cross in March of 2016 in Orlando FL. They were attending a John Maxwell Conference. During that time they did not speak much during the conference. Casual hellos were exchanged but nothing more. They are both certified members of The John Maxwell Team and as a result they reconnected an entire year later on Facebook in 2017. Monica was a potential client of Darryl. Monica was just learning English and Darryl did not know any Spanish. They made the impossible possible by helping one another communicate and breaking the language barrier. Once they began to communicate it became very evident that this was much more than a business relationship. They both decided they wanted to be together but did not want a long distance relationship. So, Darryl moved his business to the Valley and erased that 1,297.7 miles that was between them. They built a beautiful relationship and in February of 2018 they attended The International John Maxwell Conference together. While attending an executive reception Darryl gave a short speech in front of world renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell, his faculty, and over 150 executives. Then without warning he got on one knee to propose while a camera crew videoed the entire event. They met at the world’s largest Marriott and found one another among thousands of other people, they got engaged at the world’s largest Marriott in front of the world’s number 1 leadership expert, but they will be holding hands and sharing their vows in front of the world’s best family and friends right here in the Valley!

aniela and Luis first met in Elementary school at the age of nine. Daniela befriended the quiet little boy in her fourth grade class sitting at the end of the row. Twelve years of friendship and unforgettable memories were made along the way. God was crafting and molding each of them to be the perfect fit for one another. He had a plan for them, two years into dating each other Luis found the perfect opportunity and with the help of their fur baby Chief he got down on one knee during their Christmas photo session! They were just kids when they fell in love, not knowing their love story was about to begin! This September, sixteen years from the day they first met they will say “I DO”!

anny and I went to the same elementary, middle and high school, lived almost across the street from each other, and never crossed paths, that is until Summer 2014. That’s when Danny moved cities to be with me and after a year we returned to the RGV and made a life here with our three dogs. On Valentine’s Day 2017, Danny had a whole scavenger hunt set up for me. It was places and riddles that had to deal with our relationship. Family, friends, special spots, and even restaurants were involved in this process. The last clue was our home. As I walked to the door I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I opened the door and there was Danny, a table lit with a single lantern, twinkly lights everywhere, and in the lantern was a ring… THE RING. As Danny approached me he was shaking and excited. He got down on his knee and proposed. With joy and tears I said “YES”! I can’t wait till the day I marry the man I have been waiting for.

W

e took a weekend get away to central Texas Dec. 8th, 2017. We spent a night in San Antonio and had dinner at our favorite spot. Our night ended with a lighted carriage ride around the Christmas adorned river walk. Saturday morning we drove up to Austin for brunch and spent the entire day at Rainey street. Sunday before heading home we had lunch at our spot, and with the encouragement of my brother we decided to stay and go to the trail of lights later that evening. As we walked along the trail, I spotted a beautifully lit tree which I loved. By the time the trail of lights had ended, Jacob and I posed pictures in front of that magical tree. As we posed, Jacob turned to look at me while grabbing my hands as he began to get down on one knee, and frantically looked for something in his pocket. He finally found what he was looking for and pulled out a beautiful ring, as he said my whole name, with a Spanish accent (he’s white). He asked me to marry him and to spend the rest of our life together. I of course said Yes!!!

fter After 3 years of dating, Johnathan proposed at the local Tom Thumb grocery store (in the sloppy joe aisle). I know! What was he thinking?! I had always imagined meeting the man of my dreams while grocery shopping, he knew that I desired such a simple and sweet proposal. Johnathan brought it full circle on December 17th, 2017 (almost exactly 40 years after my father asked my mother out at the grocery store). While making a quick snack run with my friend we were rushing through the aisles, she pulls me back and says “Hey! That’s your name right?” I looked and there was my name and a single red balloon attached to a Sloppy Joe Can. I asked “why is my name on a can?” Then it hit me! It was happening. Johnathan was walking behind me and I just couldn’t help but laugh. Mainly because I was gushing with excitement in disbelief that the guy would actually do it. He got down on one knee and popped the question. It was perfect! And of course... I said YES!

ictoria and Marco grew up less than two blocks from each other yet didn’t meet until her junior year of high school through a mutual friend. They became instant friends, but Marco, a senior at the time, was off to college a few months later. A year later Victoria also decided to attend college in San Antonio and called the only person she knew. The two became attached at the hip becoming best friends, then began dating in February of 2011. After dating for two years, Marco knew he wanted it to last a lifetime. Marco planned a vacation to Estes Park, Colorado with few friends, Victoria’s favorite childhood vacation spot. One cool morning, Marco had everyone wake up early and make the one mile hike up to Bierstadt Lake. Just after sunrise, they posed for a picture facing the lake. The lake was perfectly still with the mountains reflecting off of its mirror like surface. Marco got down on one knee and asked Victoria to spend the rest of her life with him and share many more adventures like this one.

T

hings never go as planned, but being in love makes us do crazy things. The unexpected happened when this man showed me kindness, honesty and love in such a way that I decided to marry him 5 months after meeting him. We planned to marry April 14, 2017, I didn’t want an official engagement because marriage was not really something I dreamt of as women usually do, or so I thought. Disregarding my decision Efrain convinced me to at least go for a photo session before getting civilly married, he decided to take me to a golf course, it turned out to be so much fun. Not knowing, as we arrived at the last hole our photographer and Efrain asked me to grab the ball from the hole for a picture... of course! I was so confused but I did, the ball had “Will you marry me?” written on it. He has made me embrace this thing called love, he has made me want to celebrate it because when you find something so unique you can’t hide it. LET LOVE GROW!

urreal! Having known each other since we were six years old. The only time they attended different schools was 5th and 6th grade. Zeke’s vividly remembers seeing her at an intermediate school track meet and trying to impress her. They transitioned into middle school, where it was hard for Zeke, as it is for any middle school boy to express when he likes a girl, so he made fun of her just so he could get her attention. High School rolled around and dialogue was minimal at best. Different friends, interest and activities led them down separate roads....... Both went on to attend college, Erika stayed in Texas (Pan American University, now known as UTRGV) while Zeke went out of state to University of Oregon. Four years later, while out with friends one night, in McAllen, Zeke did not approach Erika to say hello. To Erika’s displeasure, she made it clear that she was not happy that there was no acknowledgment between the two. Life created a wonderful serendipity for the couple months later that led to them exchanging numbers, which subsequently led to various phone calls throughout the year and years to come. Their lives changed with one phone call on Thanksgiving of 2014. They decided to meet up that night and never looked back. Erika surprised Zeke soon thereafter for his 29th birthday in Horseshoe Bay, Texas and one week later they were official. Erika was living in Los Angeles at the time. They maintained a long distance relationship for three years before Zeke proposed at Domaine Carneros in Napa, California, on February 17, 2018.

fter 2.5 wonderful years, Adam suggested we plan a trip to Austin for a birthday celebration. The next day Adam suggested we travel to Gruene, TX to meet up with our friends Brittany and BJ for lunch. Once we were done Adam and BJ went to the truck to supposedly get “something” although I could not imagine what he could have possibly forgotten. When they returned BJ suggested we walk the town and visit the local winery. On our walk towards the beautiful shaded pathways in front of Gruene’s water tower Brittany hinted that Adam and I should take a quick photo. Adam suggested he stand behind me, which I thought was odd since he always stood beside me. As I turned around to protest his suggestion he got down on one knee and was holding a silk blue ring box. I knew immediately what was going to happen next so tears of joy began to pour out. On March 12, 2017 Adam asked me to be his wife and of course I said “YES”!

W

hen James and I met, I was trying to walk closer to God and be completely open to his will for my life. As you might suspect, the road to love was long, winding and difficult. Wearily and with my whole heart, I prayed to my Heavenly Father to remove my view of what love was and to help me learn his ways instead. Shortly thereafter, in a Latter-Day-Saints online group, James said hello and asked to study scripture together. Weeks later, he drove four hours south and took me on our first date to Costa Mesa Restaurant. James proposed on a warm March evening at sunset and this November, we will be married under the stars at Capilla Del Rio in Rio Grande City. Through God, we are realizing we have barely scratched the surface on what love can be. Old and false definitions of what “love” is, are disintegrating and are being replaced with eternal truths. As we take this next step of marriage together, we know God will reveal more each day about what love truly is. This is just the beginning...

fter first meeting in the summer of 2015, Jackie knew there was something different about Gilbert. With Gilbert often traveling to work in the refineries, it was hard for them to actually get to know each other. On December 2, 2015, they finally went on their first date, and immediately knew it was game over. Fast forward two years later, they decided to host a Christmas party together. At the end of the night, all their guests gathered to take a group picture. In the middle of their closest family and friends, Gilbert got down on one knee and asked Jackie to marry him. They can’t wait to celebrate their marriage almost exactly three years after their first date.

sk my fiancé, Jason, and he’ll tell you love at first sight exists. After Jason saw a photo of me posted through a mutual friend, he insisted he meet the girl who’d captured his imagination. Our friend set us up on a date on January 27, 2017 and we shared a connection neither of us had experienced with anyone else. With him, love is patient and kind as I always hoped it would be. As we celebrated the New Year surrounded by family and friends, Jason got down on one knee and asked me the question we both already had the answer to. Starting the year off engaged to the love of my life is a moment I’ll never forget. We begin our adventure on December 1st, 2018 when we get to call each other husband and wife!
