Congratulations

to all the TOP SENIORS Balfour Beatty Construction Charlotte | Raleigh www.balfourbeattyus.com

North Carolina A&T State University Student Center

From the Co-Publisher

It has been 42 years since The Charlotte Post started recognizing outstanding African American high school seniors in Mecklenburg County. The reasoning spawned from the lack of publicly acknowledging the accomplishments of these students. Since its inception, the number of qualified Top Seniors has grown from 10 in 1974 to 935 in 2016. The Charlotte Post, along with The Charlotte Post Foundation, are very proud to present these students in this publication. Just as their predecessors, the students here have exhibited exceptional aptitude. Their high school footprints have made the impression of future leaders. However, the journey was not easy, as I’m sure they will say. And to add to the uneasiness of the journey, they were put into another judging process.

Robert Johnson

To be considered a Top Senior, students must have a grade point average of 3.25 or better, show leadership skills in school and community activities, high class rank and show proficiency in writing. The judging committee crafts an essay title that students must complete. From these contenders, two are chosen to receive recognition at The Charlotte Post Foundation Banquet and a monetary supplement. The Charlotte Post, The Charlotte Post Foundation, students’ parents and instructors are very proud of these young adults and their successes. We wish them well as they progress to the next level of a never-ending educational process.

5K\WKP À RZ DQG FUHDWLYH HQHUJ\ Mallard Creek’s Kelsey Mitchell is Senior of the Year BY HERBERT L. WHITE herb.white@thecharlottepost.com

Kelsey Mitchell appreciates rhythm and flow, whether it’s music or architecture. Mitchell, The Post’s Senior of the Year, finds similarities in both, which have helped her to a 5.18 grade point average at Mallard Creek High School. “I believe that music and science and math can be ultimately integrated and helpful in many different ways, said Mitchell, who plays in the school’s jazz band. “For me, music helps me fuel my design side so any time I’m looking to solve a problem, I can be more creative because I’ve been exposed to music and I can see in terms of problem-solving and designing that music is symmetry, it’s flowing. It’s a really good juxtaposition of subjects. Mitchell, who is on the engineering track at Mallard Creek, is a member of the Academy of Engineering and aims to pursue architecture as a career. She interned at a Charlotte architecture firm last summer as part of the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program and completed several projects. “It kind of allowed me to see what I wanted to do and get a taste of what I’ll probably be experiencing within the next five to 10 years, she said. Mitchell hasn’t decided on a college, but UNC Charlotte, N.C. State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York have accepted her. All three have architecture programs. In addition to the rigors of Advanced Placement classes and service in the community, Mitchell balances academics with extracurricular activities. One of her favorites is jazz band.

“I originally had been interested in concert and symphonic band, but ultimately my decision to go into jazz band was more so of not only scheduling conflicts but to expose myself to something different, she said. “I had taken jazz band a couple of years ago and was kind of interested in it so for me to go back to jazz band was to revisit what I’d already learned and the more challenging sides of jazz as opposed to the basic standards. Mitchell, who is a quadruplet, credits her siblings with pushing her academically and socially. They are competitive academically: Mitchell, the third-born, and sister Katelyn, the youngest, are co-valedictorians. “We are incredibly competitive with each other, Mitchell said, “not necessarily to outdo each other but to challenge each other to do better and lift each other and push each other to do more. A lot of the competitions and accolades I’ve gotten and places I’ve been able to go have been the result of competition between my siblings. Ultimately, we’re successful because of that competition. Regardless of the next chapter in Mitchell’s academic career, she’s looking forward to the challenge of blazing her own path. “I believe it will be different being away from my siblings, especially since we are so close and we do love and support each other, she said. “But I feel like our time apart, especially if we wind up going to different schools, will allow us to evolve into our own selves and ultimately reach our own goals.

Top Senior Essay

:KHQ ZRPHQ SXVK IRUZDUG ZH DOO ZLQ By Kelsey Mitchell My freshman year in high school, I entered my introductory engineering class, quietly took my seat and waited for class to begin. At the conclusion of the bell, class began, and the instructor greeted us nonchalantly, welcoming us to a year of difficulty and challenges. At the end of his monologue, he instructed us to stand, and began to racially and sexually profile each individual in the room. Every person, including myself, was asked to stand when they heard their respective race and gender called. The instructor then informed each person, based upon their ethnicity and gender, of their chances of success in the class, as well as future success in engineering and related fields. As an African-American woman, the instructor informed me that I would most likely pass the class, but my chances of attaining a well-paying job in the STEM field were slim. At the conclusion of the class, I was privately advised by the teacher to select an alternative career area, one that would better suit my cultural identity. This presentation of information surprised me, as many individuals claim that we, as a society, have made numerous advancements in terms of gender and racial equality. As a society, we have established the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or employee due to their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, and age, and Affirmative Action. However, the advice given to me by my instructor demonstrated that the efficacy of these laws and policies had been minimal. Although this presentation of information appears to be supported only by a single individual, statistics have revealed otherwise over the course of several decades. Recognized during World War I, women transitioned from domestic domains to provide the economy with reliable source of work. Throughout this period of time, propaganda was developed to

persuade to pursue blue-collar labor; one of the most prevalent symbols illustrating this was Rosie the Riveter. However, as the years have passed, women have regressed to their former places of domesticity, and have shown reduced interest in pursuing typically male occupied professions. A recent study revealed that women account for only ten percent of standard masculine occupations, and only earn about seventy-five percent of pay awarded to males. Furthermore, in a study conducted by the American Association of University Women, children at the age of six did not identify women as doctors, scientists, engineers and mathematicians, but did recognize males as such. Although the statistics and the declaration made by instructor appeared to be discouraging, I was determined to demonstrate my capability as an African-American woman to be successful in STEM, and out-perform my male peers. While my participation in the program had been discouraged, I continued to take Academy of Engineering classes, maintaining an A average, and receiving the college credit. Furthermore, my junior year, I was the only individual in my class to he receive college credit for the Honors PLTW Civil Engineering and Architecture class. While my intellectual capabilities were demonstrated in the Academy of Engineering classes, I continued to excel in other facets of my academic and extracurricular career. Through the remainder of my academic career, I continue to maintain an A average, while taking various AP and advance-level classes. As a result of my dedication to academic and my perpetual mission to use learning and education as the most powerful weapon and key to all future endeavors, I was declared Valedictorian of my high school class. Out of 568 kids in my entire graduating-class, my persistence and perseverance had paid off in the form of a 5 .18 weighted GPA. “When someone tells you it can’t be done, it’s more a reflection of their limitations, not yours.

Balance is key to successful life, academics BY ASHLEY MAHONEY ashley.mahoney@thecharlottepost.com

Focusing too much on one thing can ruin everything else. Meet Bryana Polk, the Post’s Top Senior Runner Up, who has a handle on balance before graduating from East Mecklenburg High. “I do a lot of things, but a lot of the things I do I am extremely passionate about,” Polk said. “I always want to make time for it. I’m just a very organized person—Google calendar is like my lifesaver.” With a 5.28 grade point average, participant in the IB program, cheerleading and a cofounder of Girls in Engineering, Polk has a lot on her hands. “When I enjoy something like that, and I’m so excited to stay after school and do this and that, it makes the homework and all of the class work seem less dramatic and stressful,” she said Polk would like to attend Vanderbilt University with a focus on electrical engineering. A member of the Academy of Engineering at East Mecklenburg, one of five high schools in the state qualified for such a program. “I started my freshman year, and I fell in love with the engineering classes,” she said. “It provided the right amount of balance, because I

have always loved mathematics, and I have always loved science, and engineering was always that middle line between the two, and a lot of the engineering stuff that we would do had a lot of an artistic appeal, too.” As engineering remains a male-dominated field, Polk and her friend Maddie Garcia started Girls in Engineering, a club to encourage females to pursue engineering. “Last year we were able to visit several middle schools,” Polk said. “We went there and we did a quick presentation on engineering, and we did bottle rocket experiments with some of the girls there. We’re just trying to show other girls that engineering is fun—it’s cool, and it’s not just for guys. Girls can do it, too. It was good to see younger girls get involved when it comes to science and math.” As Polk heads into the next chapter of her life, she intends to maintain the essential element of balance. “I have heard so many horror stories of people who focus too much on school, or focus too much on the fun side, and just didn’t have balance,” she said. “I wanted to make it a priority for myself from the get-go.”

Avona Djuna Rios Avona, Continue to strive for perfection, and if you put God first in your life, you can accomplish all things. When you doubt yourself, which I don’t know how you would, remember where your strength comes from, the Lord. I love you. Your Proud Daddy

Avona, I reflect back on the very first day you entered into the school system, and since that day I knew you would be something not only great, but also exceptional. You were and have always been determined to strive and succeed in all that you set out to do, and you did. You have given me many reasons to be very proud, and with that, it came so easy for me to be one of your best fans and to support you in all that you do. Life will give you many challenges, and some obstacles, but you have the knowledge to overcome them all. I know that you can and I know that you will. I applaud you. Thank you for giving me the pleasure of being your mother and your friend. Keep God first and remember to call Him before you call me. He can get there faster. Remember Philippians 4:13. Top Senior Runner-up Essay

Balance academics, extracurricular By Bryana Polk “V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!” Sprinting to my spot with my arms glued to my side, I cannot stop smiling from the Vaseline coating my teeth. My heart starts racing as the compilation of top 40 hits blast through the speakers and I say a quick prayer for the flyer I am about to toss in the air. Jumping on the springy blue mats, I am in my truest form: a cheerleader. I am currently the captain of varsity, but for the past five years I have dedicated a myriad of hours, sweat, and tears to cheerleading at school. It is my saving grace after the end of a long day of school, and for that, it is a main motivator of my academic success. I have always been academically gifted as I can recall being segregated from my classmates in elementary school because I qualified for the Talent Development (T.D.) program. On Award’s Day in middle school I received a $20 gift card to Walmart for receiving straight A’s all three years. I never found academic success to be difficult, that is until I made the transition to the International Baccalaureate Diplomacy program as a junior in high school. The material was not immensely difficult; however, I was unaccustomed to sheer amount of work required. In the beginning of the year I managed to push through and committed to several all?night study sessions, but as my sleep deprivation caught up, I realized that I was losing focus. I needed a concrete person or

activity to ease my augmenting stress about schoolwork. Therefore, I turned to cheering as a way clear my head and increase my overall delectation for life. By allowing myself a mental break from the heavy school and home work load, I had more energy and motivation to push through. Rather than procrastinate on an assignment, I would turn it in a day or so early to avoid conflict with practice and game times. The addition of cheerleading made time management a priority as I was no longer able to lallygag about studying for an exam. Furthermore, cheerleading molded my public speaking skills, which are essential for oral presentations. Therefore, I was able to confidently showcase my Civil Engineering class’ scale model of a football dome for the Duke Energy/Panther Stadium Build Contest. As a result, my class earned first place, a $2,500 grant for the Academy of Engineering program, and a brief excerpt in the Charlotte’s Observer. Although my trend of academic success initiated in the early years of my life, its continuation is credited to my participation in cheerleading. I firmly believe that students cannot be academically successful without a balance in physical, mental and emotional health. Cheerleading keeps my body fit, reduces my stress, and makes me feel poised and content. Therefore, cheerleading has inspired my academic success and has allowed me to achieve recognition as a Top Senior.

AMBITION IS THE FIRST KEY TO SUCCESS. THE SECOND STEP IS ACTION.

An honor roll of Charlotte Post Top Seniors Times have changed for The Charlotte Post’s Top Senior program. More than 900 students with grade-point averages at 3.25 or higher were eligible to apply for the 2016 award. In 1975, when Top Seniors was launched by Post reporter James Cuthbertson, 10 students were named. There was no senior of the year or runner up or standalone publication to highlight their accomplishment. Back then, the only recognition for high school seniors was in The Charlotte Observer and black students weren’t included. Cuthbertson had an idea: Start a program that celebrated the academic accomplishments of black HERBERT L. WHITE students. The top 10 students were highlighted in The Post, an annual rite until the 1990s when a specialty publication was launched. Top Seniors’ criteria changed, too. Community service and an essay were added to encourage well-rounded students to compete. Scholarships were added as well as the Charlotte Post Foundation took over Top Seniors as community and corporate donors were sought. Much has changed since the inaugural class of Top Seniors in 1975. Mecklenburg County has gone from 10 public high schools to 18 and private school students have been added to the eligibility list, but the celebration of our best and brightest youth remains. 'RUP PRYH LQ tips COLLEGECONFIDENTIAL.COM

Having just moved my freshman D into her dorm, I have some suggestions for those of you who have not had the pleasure of this process: • Invest in an inexpensive hand truck. You can find them at places like Home Depot. Your back will thank you. • Just because the dorm has an elevator – don’t bank on always getting easy access to it. Plan so that some lighter items will be transported via stairs. • The major crush appears to be early in the morning when the dorms open for move-in. Probably better to have a leisurely breakfast and delay arrival until after the bulk of the Type A personalities clear out. • Bring some common tools (hammer, pliers, screw drivers). My D’s desk lamp required two sizes of Phillips screwdrivers just to assemble and we had to hunt these down. It may be a good idea to leave an inexpensive set of tools with the student. One parent had a set in a compact, zip carrying case that fit nicely in the top desk drawer – good planning. • Depending on what type of electrical cords are allowed (extension vs. surge strips) figure that the outlets in the dorm rooms will not be where your S/D wants to position their electric/electronic items. You probably want to have two or three handy. • Don’t forget the coax TV cable. • Check, if possible, the sizes of the supplied room furniture before arrival if you consider lofting the bed. The desk had a built-in bookcase

attachment to its desktop that would not clear a lofted bed in one case that we saw. • Don’t assume beds designed for bunking will bunk that easily. It took us 15 minutes and five people working together to force the metal frame beds to bunk. Also, don’t give up at first, it can probably be done – you just need to get the right pressure on all four legs of the bed simultaneously. Here’s where students who are on the football or wrestling teams come in handy. • Dress cooly. You will sweat. • Suggest keeping the packing boxes for large items (refrigerator, TV’s, printers). This should make them easier to move out in the spring and back in next fall – and less prone to being damaged or scratched. • Plan on making a run to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. the day of the move-in, not the day before, you WILL forget something no matter how well you plan.
