TIPON SILLIMAN 2015

Tipon Silliman has always been an opportunity and time for Silliman alumni to gather together and interface with each other and key University officials. More importantly, participants will be able to hear, and be informed about the status of affairs at the University, its academic and other development programs and relevant issuesconcerning operations that maybe of interest to all alumni. It is my heartfelt hope that this Tipon Silliman 2015 event will strengthen and solidify the bond among us and inspire us to support our Alma Mater’s commitment to quality Christian education, rekindle memories, and the Silliman Spirit that we all cherish. We thank those who have worked tirelessly and have been instrumental in making this event a reality and a great success. Truly, the Silliman Spirit is alive! Let us move forward propelled and guided by our Alma Mater’s foundational principles of “via, veritas, vita”. May God continue to bless us all!

MESSAGE

We once again gather as a Silliman community beyond the shores of home – that place that holds special memories in our hearts, one t hat brings a smile to the face and a sparkle to the eye at even mere mention of it. On behalf of all us in Silliman University, I congratulate the Silliman University Alumni Council of North America on yet another celebration of Tipon! I also congratulate the gracious host, the Association of Central Texas Sillimanians! Tipon has grown to be a big event that many Sillimanians around the world look forward to attending and hearing more about. To friends, it offers a glimpse into that pervasive Silliman experience that binds people across generations and brings them together for a common cause. To us Sillimanians, it is a celebration of life, a time to relive experiences that define what Silliman Spirit is really all about. Silliman takes pride of our fellowship with SUACONA. We hope that his year’s Tipon (our gathering together) will allow for this fellowship to develop into an opportunity to create more impact on others.

silliman university Building Competence, Character & Faith

June 2015 I am pleased to convey the best wishes and warm greetings of the Silliman Board of Trustees, administration officials, and our faculty and staff to each and every member of SUACONA on the occasion of its TIPON here in San Antonio, Texas. I have attended four of such great events--in New Jersey, California, Canada and Silliman University. These are wonderful occasions to meet up with classmates, dorm mates, former professors, and fraternity and sorority members and rekindle friendships and close ties with them. TIPON also provides formal and informal opportunities to catch up with key university officials, get updated on the latest developments, raise questions and seek clarification on university policies, and trends in Christian education. As you can expect, Silliman University at present is different and yet the same as the university which you attended in your youth. It is different because it has to adapt to new technology, innovate and initiate new ways of thinking, teaching and doing research; and wrestle with different issues which challenge our university, our country, and even our planet. It is the same because Jesus Christ who is the one foundation of our university remains the same. It is the same because the virtues, values and moral tenets which you learned from the university are passed on from your generation of students to the present generation. I am sure this TIPON will help us alumni appreciate even more how important we are to the university and its continued survival. I know that members from North America, Canada and Hawaii are coming. There will also be alumni from Europe and other continents. It is good to know that a significant number of attendees are attending TIPON for the first time. Enjoy the renewal of old friendships and the establishment of new ones; get updated on the latest about Silliman; get a chance to see the sights in San Antonio and the rest of Texas; and most of all enjoy the special fellowship of those who through the years, keep and nourish the “Silliman Spirit” in their hearts and in their minds. Loyal will we be to Silliman!

TIPON SILLIMAN 2015

MESSAGE

To My Fellow Sillimanians and Friends, It is, indeed, an honor and a privilege to hold the 8th biennial SUACONA Tipon Silliman in San Antonio, Texas. It took two years of intense planning and intercontinental teleconferences by the Tipon Silliman 2015 Committee; finally our dedication and efforts have come into fruition. I am grateful to all of those who actively participated in doing the “dirty work”, especially to the leadership of Rev. Frank Somera, Jr., Dr. Celan Alo, Hazel Quisumbing and Haydee Pioquinto. The vision that led to the formation of SUACONA was to unite the chapters in North America so as to be able to collectively help Silliman University in achieving its goal of providing affordable quality Christian education. We are a firm believer in the saying, “in unity there is strength.” I thank each one of you for taking time off from your busy schedule just to be here with us. I hope to see enthusiasm and cooperation throughout this Tipon Silliman event; from the cowboy picnic at Enchanted Spring Ranch, to the early Sunday 5K Run/Walk and the Sunday Worship. Do have fun in all of our activities and feel the Silliman spirit. May this fellowship inspire you to look forward to future Tipon events.

Association of Central Texas Sillimanians (ACTS) Fellow Sillimanians and Friends: Welcome to San Antonio, Texas! The Association of Central Texas Sillimanians (ACTS) is privileged and honored to host TIPON Silliman 2015. San Antonio, Texas, has plenty of history and sites that you can enjoy. All you need to do is take advantage of the information provided by our local Visitors Bureau in your reunion packet. First and foremost would be the Alamo Mission. When you visit, I would recommend that you watch the short history movie in the small theater of the museum. Then enjoy the tour of the other six mission churches within the City’s area. Of course, the River Walk has a lot to offer when it comes to fine dining and for those who are looking for a good variety of food choices at reasonable prices. If you have the time, visit the small towns surrounding San Antonio and enjoy the Hill Country with its rolling hills that is painted with wild flowers. There is a popular quote that says: “Life is not measured by the number of breath we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” So I hope that your experience in the next few days will rekindle the true Silliman Spirit and will be a “moment that take your breath away.” I hope you will have a wonderful and meaningful experience in San Antonio, Texas! As the President of this chapter, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SUACONA TIPON Committee who worked hard to make this event successful and to provide Silliman Alumni another unique experience as every previous TIPON gathering have offered. I have thoroughly enjoyed the teleconferencing time. There was laughter while looking back at experiences of past TIPON events. I would also like to thank the members of ACTS, this small band of Sillimanians dedicated to the chapter. Since 2013 after winning the bid for this TIPON, we have met regularly to plan for the activities we could suggest to the SUACONA TIPON Committee. We visited the San Antonio Visitors bureau to get brochures, talked to them for advice and avail of any help they can offer. As a group we checked out places, checked out hotels for reasonable prices, and of course, did food tasting. In behalf of ACTS I would like to give special recognition to Dr. Celan Alo for all his efforts as our local Chairman and Co-Chair of SUACONA TIPON 2015 Committee. I cannot express enough, I am truly very proud of the members of this group. Let us move forward with the Silliman Spirit! Sincerely,

HAZEL TAGLUCOP-QUISUMBING President, Association of Central Texas Sillimanians

TIPON SILLIMAN 2015

A Brief History and Timeline of Tipon Silliman and SUACONA The dream of Silliman alumni and friends in North America uniting for common cause had been held by many for quite some time long before the first Tipon and the organization of SUACONA. There were many reasons for such a union. Fellowship was of course uppermost but a strong second consideration was financial. With the continuing decline of the mission support that had been a major source of revenue for nearly a hundred years, something was needed to take its place and it appeared that tapping the resources of the overseas alumni, a very large segment of which was based in North America, was part of the answer. In an article for the United Board newsletter entitled “Looking for Mr. Money Man,” the late Dr. Paul Lauby graphically illustrated the positive impact on Silliman’s financial health of united Silliman alumni by saying that “ if each North American Silliman alumnus would give even just $100 to Silliman, the aggregate sum would help improve Silliman’s financial picture dramatically.”

‘The question, he posed, was how to rally the Silliman overseas alumni to such a cause and by whom.’ Source: Please click http://suacona.com/3/miscellaneous6.htm for the complete version of the SUACONA history.

San Francisco, California - July, 20-22, 1990 •

The first ever international gathering of Silliman University alumni was held in San Francisco, California

•

The late Dr. Paul Lauby was the keynote speaker where he spoke on the topic “Translating the Boundaries of a New Decade.”

•

The conference was attended by 300 guests

Stony Point Conference June 28, 1998 •

Then SU President Agustin Pulido expressed a desire to have conversations with representatives of existing alumni chapters in North America with the purpose of exploring how they can work together to help their Alma Mater

•

Accordingly, Nan Hawkins of the United Board was influential in bringing representatives of the North American alumni associations together for conversations. TIPON SILLIMAN 2015

|

17

On June 28, 1998, the group signed the Stony Point Agreement: “We, as the North American Silliman University Alumni Associations, have been organized to support the Christian ideals, goals and mission of their Alma Mater, it would be appropriate for them to unite, organize, and join together in expressing their views, concerns, perspectives on certain issues, and/ or collective judgments, and convey them to the University, Administration, Board of Trustees, as well as the Silliman University Foundation. It is hoped that, subsequent to the receipt of such collective judgments by the President, Trustees and Board, same could be evaluated and discussed during deliberations and contribute to the resolution of University problems. Such a union does not to any extent or degree impair or diminish the independence and autonomy of each member chapter. “

Planning for the Grand Reunion (Tipon Silliman) in North America •

Jan 2000 - Alumni from New England and the Midwest informed Dr Pulido about the plans for a North American gathering

•

April 29, 2000 in Ann Arbor, Michigan * Members and officers from the MOK (Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky), Massachusetts, and Ontario (with Nan Hawkins, of the United Board, on a teleconference) met and decided that Chicago chapter (with MOK and Ontario chapters as co-sponsors) would be asked to host the first gathering during the third weekend of May 2001

•

•

Highlight of the first ever SUACONA TIPON was the musical presentation by the internationally renowned Silliman Choristers, who were on tour of the United States. Time was spent in strategic planning by chapter representatives. Also the first set of officers were elected to the umbrella organization, which was called SUACONA, an acronym for Silliman University Alumni Council of North America.

•

The officers inducted were: Chair: Sylvester Almiron, Jr., Vice-chair: Renato Querubin, Secretary: Coleta Campanale, Treasurer: Pacita Flores, PRO: Lawrence Lacuesta, and Auditor: Paul Imperial.

•

The concluding event of the convention was a worship service held on Sunday at the Chicago Filipino Presbyterian Church with Dr. Paul Lauby preaching.

July 8, 2000 in Chicago * Planning session was held and decided to call the conference “Tipon Silliman.” * “Tipon” was favored over other Filipino words because it means “assembly or gathering” in several major Filipino languages

•

•

“A mighty oak had fallen.” Dr. Paul Lauby, who had been the inspiration behind the birth and growth of Tipon and SUACONA, passed away May 21, 2003. The SUACONA Executive committee decided to dedicate Tipon Silliman 2003 to the memory of Dr. Lauby.

•

With the death of Dr Lauby, memorializing of Sillimanians who had died in the intervening period between Tipon events started during Tipon Silliman 2003.

•

The Tipon venue was held at the Glenpointe Marriott Hotel in Teaneck, New Jersey

•

Several dignitaries from Silliman University who attended include President Pulido, BOT Chair

July 2000 * In preparation for the first ever Tipon, a multimedia communication network was set up to facilitate the promotion of the event a listserv was established on the Internet called suanatipon2001, which was the forerunner of what is now Tipon-Silliman@yahoogroups.com

Prof. Leonor Briones and trustees Ricardo Balbido, Jr., Antonio Villamor, Julio Sy, Sr. and Noel Tan and former SU president Cicero Calderon. •

One new feature during the Tipon Silliman 2003 was time given for class reunions.

•

Entertainment included the performance of the choral group, Ating Pamana (Our Heritage) which succeeded the Silliman Choristers, and Mr. Michael Dadap, an internationally renowned concert guitarist.

•

Main highlight of the Tipon Silliman 2003 was the announcement by the SU administration of the plan to erect the Twin Portals Buildings. Specifically, the SU administration proposed that SUACONA would help raise funds for the first building (Portal West), which would cost approximately $700,000. By unanimous vote, the SUACONA Board of Directors agreed to undertake this fundraising.

•

The following SUACONA officers were elected to serve for the next two years: Chair: Sylvester Almiron, Jr. (reelected), Vice-chair: Renato Querubin (reelected), Secretary: Gideon Alegado, Treasurer: Zenaida Duran Bennett, PRO: Joel Pal, and Auditor: Paul Imperial (reelected). The idea of holding a SUACONA TIPON at the campus by the sea was finally made into fruition when the Tipon Silliman 2013 events were held in Silliman University in Dumaguete City August 21-25, 2013 to coincide with the 112th SU Founders Day celebrations. The theme for the event was: “ONE GOD, ONE WORLD, ONE SILLIMAN.” Because this was the first time that it would be held outside North America, preparations for the event were quite a challenge. Teleconferences to keep abreast of the planning and preparation between committee members spanned three continents and six time zones. While most SUACONA Tipons had their gatherings and activities in one venue, Tipon Silliman 2013 took place in different settings: Silliman Hall, Silliman Church, Udarbe Chapel, SUACONA Student Center aka Oriental Hall, and other locations in Dumaguete City and neighboring municipality. Highlights included the holding of the Welcome activities at the Tierra Alta Residential Resort located on the slopes of Palinpinon in Valencia, Negros Oriental. The Welcome evening activities included: a sumptuous dinner with several lechons and one ‘lechon baka’; a musical

A Culture Of Giving By Prof. Priscilla Lasmarias Kelso (AB’ 61, Faculty 1963 -67, OSA 2004, President, New England Chapter)

*

reetings in the name of Jesus Christ who has enjoined us to be faithful followers and cheerful givers for the sake of the Gospel. It is not often that one has the opportunity to address Silliman alumni from near and far on a topic close to my heart and to the ongoing commitments of the Silliman Association of New England and the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia. While flying from Boston to Houston to San Antonio this week, I was reflecting on how each one of us here assembled for Tipon 2015 has been the recipient of so much goodwill and generosity from others –- from parents and families who sacrificed for our education, from generous contributors to scholarships that enabled us to finish our academic work at Silliman, from people who believed in us, from Silliman University whose vision of Christian higher education included us in her roster of countless graduates spread out across the world. We are therefore a gathering of grateful people who are now in a position to give back to our Alma Mater, to pay it forward. In this regard I would like to challenge each of us about “a culture of giving,” specifically growing a culture of sustainable giving, which involves giving on a regular basis to our university. No doubt, SUACONA has a very fine track record of providing disaster assistance to Silliman for recent calamities that have hit the Philippines, not to mention projects such as Portal West and the much-needed Student Center, now in full use on campus. Several individuals here have also given substantial amounts of money to the university over the years. Concurrent with this, however, there should ideally be a more intentional type of sustained giving from the larger rank and file of alumni in the U.S., Canada, and other international locations. For instance, if 300 alumni give $100 each annually to Silliman on a regular basis that would be $30,000 a year that the university can allocate for 28

strategic planning such as faculty development or infrastructure upgrade. An annual $100 contribution will not break anyone’s budget, and my hunch is that if we can afford to pay our way to attend Tipon 2015, we can easily afford this amount, if not more. A culture of consistent, regular, sustainable giving is also Biblical. I am an English professor and am not used to speaking about money. My right brain operates in poetry and abstract thinking, so I will shift gears at this point to talk about the conceptual aspects of a culture of giving. It is really not just about writing checks. It is about supporting the Ministry of Silliman University, which is not an economic commodity, not a start-up company, not a fluctuating event in the stock market. In contrast, Silliman is a God-given institution for Christian education in our home country, a 114-yearold ministry that has stood the test of time and recent history -- World War ll, martial law, and climate change calamities. And because I remember all of the above, I continue to claim Silliman as my spiritual home that has nurtured me in my 50-year journey in America and for the rest of my life. The heartbeat of giving goes way beyond the pocketbook. It is also a matter of the heart, of what sustains us, of what we remember as good, noble and godly in our beginnings as Silliman alumni. I am reminded of a scholarship contributor from Canyon, Texas who enabled an English major to buy her books in the 1960’s – a Physics graduate in 2010 who studied by lamplight in an impoverished home, now finishing his Ph.D. in Physics through the generosity of a California donor – a working student in the 1940’s who became pastor of Silliman Church and a writer of books. The stories are many. Perhaps one of them is yours. So whether you are or have been in the giving or receiving end, the blessing is the same. People are helped, the university’s mission is sustained, God is served May a culture of giving be part of our ongoing journey as we move the Silliman spirit forward!

An anthem, whether it is for a country, school or organization, is designed to evoke loyalty, pride and unity among its constituents. Such is the case with “Hymn to SUACONA” which celebrates our common heritage and pledges our time, talent and treasure to our alma mater, all inspired by the school motto of “Via, Veritas, Vita.” Composed by Ruby L. Agnir (nee Ordinario), HS 1953, M.A. 1971 and Federico I. Agnir, M.Div. 1968, the song was premiered during Tipon Silliman in August, 2013. It was sung by the SUACONA Tipon Chorale accompanied by the university band under the baton of Prof. Joseph Basa, who wrote an orchestral arrangement for the occasion.

TIPON SILLIMAN 2015

Missionaries Book Background

Glimpses of Missionaries and Fraternal Workers at Silliman University, 1901—1998 The idea of writing this book materialized in December 2011 after two incidents that year pointed out its necessity: • A copy of the 2001 Silliman Centennial book I had given to Mrs. Thelma Appleton on her 100th birthday in February 2011, save for the American presidents, contained little to nothing on the missionaries who established and nurtured the growth of the school since 1901 • A call I received in California from New York in June 2011 on the demise of Lisabeth MacKinlay, a classmate and friend since the elementary grades, revealed the lack of information on the whereabouts of the living family members/siblings at the UBCHEA. With the help of the older “faculty kids,” Carmen Utzurrum Pak, Elnora Horrilleno Metzger, George Imperial, and Ruth Imperial Pfeiffer, we found her only living sister, Edith McKinley Elizondo, in Spring, Texas. Thus, plans were made and communicated with President Ben Malayang in December 2011 on my intention to write the book. I also started writing a monthly article on a missionary family for the San Diego association newsletter by January 2012 after sending out letters to missionary families in the U.S. The University had no singular listing of the missionaries but, armed with my compilation from historical references (Silliman University, 1901–1950; Clouds By Day and Fire By Night: The Silliman Story; and, Silliman University, 1901–1976), research was begun in March 2012. Five more visits were made between 2012 and 2014 to access information from the PCUSA documents and the Sillimaniana Archives at the Silliman Library, the SU Personnel Office, and the Archaeology Museum. Since photocopying was not allowed, hundreds of pictures were taken of articles and pictures from the Sillimanian and personnel records, as well as pictures from the Portals and some photograph albums by my husband, Joel Charles Simpkins. Each pictorial account was transcribed on our return from each trip. In the U.S., we made trips to missionary retirement communities in California to interview living missionaries as well as go through their archives to seek information on others. Phone calls were made to organizations and family members found through the internet. Additional information from these searches and publications, unavailable at Silliman, was sought. All the information was organized into folders for each family found and the input of family members was sought to augment and update the information. A sense of urgency took root when some missionaries, now in their late 80s or early 90s, and other family members in their 70s, started to pass away in 2012. This book is far from being complete in its content as many records could not be found, but it is the hope of the author that it will remind and inform the Silliman family of its rich heritage built on the faith, love, and perseverance of those who came to Dumaguete to build Silliman University.

Missionaries and Fraternal Workers at Silliman University, 1901-1998 “Two unique features have tended to characterize Silliman faculty and staff… One is the number and variety of visitors drawn into the service of the school, some for a life time, others more briefly but long enough to be deeply involved in some phase of campus life or work… To this list must be added the concern for other people inherent in the missionary enterprise and the fact that most visitors who traveled off the beaten path to Dumaguete arrived with some degree of a kindred spirit. Whether their stay was long or short, such visitors were likely to be in agreement with the comment written into a Presbyterian Mission report after the annual meeting on campus of the Institute. Silliman has a life, a spirit, a world all its own and no one has ever partaken of its life, imbibed in its spirit or become a real part of its world without being better thereby.” Dr. Arthur L. The SUACONA Student Center of Silliman University

I

n the heart of student life on the campus of Silliman University is a SUACONA project that has provided a centralized home for student activities. In 2011 this building was inaugurated on Founders Day – a timely gift for students who can now gather in one place to relax, play, work on specialized tasks, interact with one another, and avail themselves of student services under one roof. Before SUACONA co-funded the Student Center project with Silliman University, student activities and services were scattered in various locations across the campus. Now, in what used to be Oriental Hall, close to the university church and amphitheater, under a canopy of acacia trees, students congregate daily in lounges and offices that house student publications, the student government, student chaplaincy, testing services, and several other essential components of student life. Inspired by the efforts of SUACONA’s executive committee under the leadership of Zeny Duran Bennett, alumni chapters in North America and Canada contributed funds for the renovation and refurbishing of the old Oriental Hall, transforming it into a modern setting for student activities in a strategic location. Alumni chapters sponsored specific rooms and offices that required different levels of funding. Individual Silliman alumni donors also gave generously to the project. Many fund-raising events held by chapters raised substantial amounts to help underwrite the collective efforts of Silliman and the university’s alumni base. Over the years, SUACONA has sponsored several projects to benefit Silliman University. The Student Center stands out not only as a much-needed addition to the quality of student life on campus, but also as an exemplary show of strength among SUACONA’s alumni chapters in cooperating and supporting a common cause. When I was teaching as a retired English professor at Silliman in 2011, the sight of hundreds of students using the Student Center daily – making the place look and feel like a beehive of activity – made me feel happy, proud, enthusiastic about how Silliman alumni can band together and make something really good and worthwhile happen! Thanks, SUACONA!

Inaugural Silliman University Alumni 5K Run/Walk 2014: A project of SUAlumni Association of Southern California in cooperation with SUACONA Written by Faith Manigsaca Duran, SUAASC president 2013-2015 First time I joined a 5k run, the thought of organizing one for a good cause came to mind. With Jessie Mario Duran and Malcolm Casel (aka Macky) Hiponia, we joined the PeDRO 5 k run to raise funds for the super typhoon Haiyan victims of Leyte and neighboring places. As we walked, we discussed the possibility of organizing one for SUAASC. The opportunity presented itself with Silliman University (SU) creating the Continuing Calamity Response Program (CCRP) in the aftermath of Haiyan aka Yolanda. SUACONA (SU Alumni Council of North America) and the United Board’s support of this project strengthened our resolve to pursue our plan. Our Chapter is not new to helping SU with its disaster preparedness plan since we donated money towards the purchase of the rescue boat in November 2013.We do have a soft spot in helping those in our local community too, as we have helped with the feeding the homeless program of the San Gabriel Valley Coalition in February 2014. We were all novices in the area of organizing runs and marathons. Officers and friends namely Macky, LynnethLabuntog Quiambao and MarphoeAcocoro are frequent participants in this type of event but have never organized one. Initially, we gave ourselves four to five months of planning and preparation however, due to availability of the park for run site, we moved the date of the event to two months earlier. With only two months to prepare, we needed the support of all officers as well as past presidents who were willing to be involved. After many weekends and some weekdays working as a team doing promotion, planning and preparation, we’re finally confident that we are ready. The day of the event came. The air was filled with excitement and expectation. Everyone around wanted to be a part of this historic event, being the first 5k run/walk ever organized by Sillimanians outside of DumagueteCity. There were alumni and non-alumni participants. Alumni from other cities and states also came. We have participants as virtual runners from within and outside the USA. As participant Robert Bieselinnoted, “I was amazed that SUAASC was able to put together such a great race in such a short amount of time... The course was beautiful, the staff was well-organized, and the crowd of runners were fun and friendly. I’ll definitely be running again next year!” Aside from the runners, we had numerous donors and sponsors since many believed in our cause. We have met our goal! SUAASC gave Silliman a check in the amount of $7,000.00 for the CCRP. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be able to work with officers and members who are dedicated and committed to the cause we set ourselves; To help our alma mater Silliman University assist students who are in dire need due to calamities that may be natural orman-made. Since the Silliman Alumni 5K Run/Walk 2014 event was scheduled to coincide with our annual picnic, we gave our runners a treat by inviting everybody to share the sumptuous meal prepared by officers and members of SUAASC.

The National Anthem of the United States of America The Star Spangled Banner Oh, say, can you see? By the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air. Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave? O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The National Anthem of Canada O Canada O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free

From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

SILLIMAN SONG Where the white sands and the coral Kiss the dark blue southern sea. And the palm trees tall and stately Wave their branches in the breeze. Stands a college we all honor, In our hearts without a peer. Silliman our Alma Mater Ever lovely, ever dear. CHORUS:

Loyal will we be to Silliman, Here’s a cheer, boys, three times three: Silliman our Alma Mater. Silliman beside the sea. Happy days of school and college Gliding swiftly like a dream, When the things of life and beauty Are more nearly what they seem, Winning vict’ries in the classroom, On the court, the tract, the field, Still we work for dear old Silliman, Her honor bright to shiled. When we leave the halls of Silliman, Roam the world o’er near and far, Still the faith and truth she gave us Will remain our guiding star; Or in high place or in lowly, Fortune sends us joy or pain, To our love for dear old Silliman, Loyal shall we’er remain.
