LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT or those of you who weren’t able to attend the April 4 Board meeting, we were able to present an update on the proposed park master plan, which includes potential future development and placement of things like a multipurpose sports field, dog park, expanded walking path, fishing piers, additional bathroom facilities, enhanced pool amenities, the remodeled or rebuilt clubhouse, and more. The plan received very positive response from those in attendance, and we will be publishing more information about the plan as it moves toward finalization. And please keep in mind, while the plan may soon be considered “final,” that doesn’t mean it’s not flexible. It may indeed change over time depending on any number of factors. But it does provide a solid blueprint of what’s possible in the park. We also announced that after reviewing the bid information we had received last year, the Board voted unanimously to select the architectural firm of Alvin Peters and Associates to do the clubhouse architectural design. Alvin has specialized experience in HOA projects, including neighborhood clubhouses, and it makes further sense because his firm is the one that oversaw development of the park master plan, so his clubhouse design will be more in line with the overall goals of the master plan. The design process is just now beginning, and we will keep the community posted on the progress. We all know that the special events we have in Timberwood are a large part of what separates our neighborhood apart from others. And in just its third year, the “Smokin in the Park” barbecue cookoff is already one of the biggest and best events of the year. This year’s cookoff was held on April 1, and we had 33 teams. It was a lot of fun to see all the different teams’ equipment and setup, that ranged from simple backyard smokers to very elaborate and fully-equipped trailer rigs. The event has grown well beyond barbecue as it now has live music throughout the day and night, children’s activities, and much more. This year barbecue plates were also provided to visitors in exchange for a donation to the Bexar-Bulverde Volunteer Fire Department, and that raised over $1,500 for the department! Special thanks to Clean Scapes landscaping company, which donated the briskets and pork butts that were served, and to Timberwood Park resident Ricky Gonzales, who spent a whole day smoking the meat. Thanks also to MJ Septic, which was a presenting sponsor for the event.

What was especially great was the opportunity to spend time getting to know neighbors whether they were barbecuing next to you, sitting at a judges’ table with you, volunteering with you to help set up or clean up, or just walking around to the different tents to see how the different folks were barbecuing. There were also spots where multiple families from sections of the neighborhood were set up together enjoying the day’s activities. The Sunny Meadow families were especially well represented in a couple of different locations. (In fact, special thanks to the Sunny Meadow team members who saw me and my barbecue partner having some equipment difficulty right before the “chef’s choice” turn-in time and lent us a giant pan that helped us finish in time and get our entry turned in. Very neighborly of you guys!) Of course events like this don’t happen without the hard work, dedication and creativity of Karen O’Neil, who most of you know has been the Social Events Chairman for over 7 years now. Karen spends countless hours throughout the year putting on all of the events we have, but this barbecue cookoff really is one of the most challenging based on the number of different logistics involved. Karen and her family are originally from Connecticut, but she can now teach any Texan how to put on a first-class Texas barbecue event! And no sooner was the barbecue event over and Karen was putting the finishing touches on the Easter Egg hunt which was held the following weekend on April 8. This was the biggest one yet, with hundreds of children and their families in attendance. It was pretty amazing to see over 3,000 Easter eggs picked up in mere seconds!
