When I was growing up, I loved the ‘Back to School’ season for so many reasons.

My favorite time was when mom took us school supply shopping. Nothing got me more excited about the school year like a set of new pencils and a shiny notebook. It was the start of something new, an opportunity to build on the past and look forward to the new adventures in the future.

That’s a very similar parallel to how our Journey team is feeling. We have worked so hard to create a publication that inspires, encourages and brings joy to our readers. When you’re doing something right, people notice, and God sometimes presents you with an opportunity to build on the strong foundation He has helped you to create.

August might be the most transitional of all the 12 months. It seems that regardless of whether you have school-aged children in your home, the world moves from a relaxed schedule to a more def ined agenda. Everyone becomes laser-focused on making a smooth transition from summer to fall. As you pull out your calendar and adjust your alarm clock wake up time, we hope you are looking forward to great journeys and memories that will be made this year. I know we are! Happy August!

We were at a crossroads in our time together… a point in the road where we had to make a decision to continue the comfortable path we had been on or throw caution to the wind and head straight into a future that while exciting, promised to bring with it a new wave of uncertainty.

We had been presented an opportunity for evolving our magazine, a very large opportunity to be more of what we have always wanted to be. Taking that leap of faith and believing that we had the courage and the vision to walk conf idently toward this new venture is what we prayed about night after night.

After weeks of meetings, phone calls, late nights, storyboards, caffeine, excitement and panic… we as a team decided we were ready and open for any and all changes heading our way.

October of 2018 will usher in a new era and a new direction for something much larger than what we ever imagined for our little hometown magazine.

There are big surprises coming, and we are giddy with excitement over what He has provided. The cover of this issue as well as September’s hints to the amazing blessings coming, and we look forward to beginning a new journey with you all.

Matt and I f irst laid eyes on this property back in 2010 when we were visiting our friend’s adjacent lake house. At the time this home wasn’t for sale and we bought a small weekender to enjoy. In 2017 we made the decision to move to the lake permanently and lucky for us, this property was on the market! Although it was still beautiful, it had been sitting for several years with very little attention given to it. We knew without a doubt that with a little bit of elbow grease and a lot of love, this 1976 jewel would come to life again as our dream home on the lake.

The two most important things to us were creating wide-open views of the lake and making sure everyone had their own space. We revamped and updated the home throughout – complete with rock walls, shiplap, brick accents and beautiful ceilings. Matt and I wanted a warm, cozy environment that had a rustic feel to it as well as a way to incorporate family heirlooms seamlessly. The styles blended together beautifully.

The furniture in our home is a mix of new pieces (from Ivan Smith) and antique pieces from our families. But our favorite piece of furniture is probably the coffee table in the living room.

It was made from a large oak tree we had to cut from the property. We had a guy in Troup make it for us. Â It took almost 6 months to complete and 4 gallons of epoxy!

Matt and I absolutely love to entertain and created multiple outdoor spaces to go along with that lifestyle. We made a covered patio/grill area for morning coffee, revamped and expanded the boat dock to entertain friends and family, and also remodeled and created a covered porch on the guest cabin over the water for sunset gazing.Â

Our boat is a fabulous 1964 wooden cruiser. We found it on Craigslist and had a man in the Tyler area redo it for us. It is perfect to take out in the evenings and ride around the lake on a sunset cruise!

This back to school season, some of you are preparing to send your child to school for the very f irst time. It’s an exciting time, and many days of preparation go into the f irst day of school. As you start making your list, I’d like to add a few more things to make those f irst days even better. I’ve been in the kindergarten classroom over 30 years, and although some things have changed, many have stayed the same.

Have your child’s eyes and ears checked by a professional.

Although hearing and eye tests are given to each child, it may take several months for your child to be seen. I learned this myself when a school exam showed one of my children needed glasses to help him see. I had no idea.

Start preparing your child for the school schedule. Have a set bedtime to ensure plenty of rest; most children need at least eight hours of sleep. Practice getting up to be on time to school. Teach children this is part of their job. They miss instruction time when they are late.

Teach your child to take learning seriously. Every day is packed full of instruction, and for each day your child misses they have missed a part of their learning adventure that has to be made up.

Make sure your child has proper toileting skills to take care of their own needs. Teachers have many students to care for and they can’t do the necessary things for your child, so make sure they can handle this on their own.

Make sure they can button and snap their clothes and fasten their belts.

Teach your child to tie their shoes. I can’t tell you how many thousands of shoes must be tied daily and just how much time that takes. Consider sending your child in Velcro shoes until they have learned this task. If they insist on tie shoes, make sure their shoes are double knotted by you before they leave home each morning. This will be a huge help to their teacher and it aids them in not falling or tripping on their shoe laces. (Pinterest has ideas on teaching a child how to tie shoes if you need a little help.)

Label all jackets, lunch kits and backpacks with your child’s name. Label them on the inside for safety reasons, but this way they can get back to the owner if they are lost.

I can’t tell you how many items are not claimed at the end of each year.

Practice using scissors. If they cannot cut, let them practice from home with old magazines or paper. Many students come to school and don’t even know how to hold a pair of scissors.

Teach your child to write their name. This is an important skill, and a child feels so successful when they accomplish this. Older siblings or grandparents can also help younger children with this task.

Learning their letters is a skill that can benefit them, as well. The more letters and sounds they know coming in, the quicker it is for them to move forward. Along with that, check them on knowing their basic colors. Go on a walk outisde, ask the the colors, and see if they know them.

Just because school is starting, don’t stop reading to your child. Ask them questions about what you just read.

Remember, a child’s attention span is one minute for each year of their age. For example, 4 years old = 4 minutes, and 5 years= 5 minutes and so on.

Be smart about preparing your child’s lunch. There are many students in the lunchroom at one time and not enough adults to open packages for each student. Make sure your child knows how to open the packages you send.

If your child can’t open the package, consider opening it at home and putting it inside something they can easily open.

Many fears can be calmed by talking to your child about school and what to expect. Many campuses host a “Meet the Teacher” before the first day. Make every effort to attend and be sure to show your child around the school, especially the lunchroom. If your school doesn’t have a formal meeting before the first day, ask for permission to bring your child beforehand so he/she will feel comfortable on that first day.

The first day of school is a rite of passage. Helping your child to be as prepared as possible will ensure they have a great experience.

No matter what you do, you may both shed some tears at the beginning, and that’s okay. They will get the routine down, and it will become easier as time goes on. Buckle up, be prepared, and don’t forget to take pictures. Have a great first day of school!

(and our minds!) for the return of the hustle and bustle of fall. Buying school supplies, cleaning backpacks, revamping sleep schedules and more, the closing of summer is almost an event itself.

Surprise your kids with a “Bye-Bye Summer Breakfast Bar”! Open your pantry and pull out everything you won’t allow for school morning fuel – sugary cereals, powdered donuts, Rice Krispy treats, etc. Lay everything out in one big spread and let the end of summer breakfast feast begin.

Side note: We recommend an outdoor activity soon afterwards in order to help them burn off the extra energy!

o one wants to think about needing

medical air transport, but it’s nice to know we have access to the top of the line in the air ambulance industry. Apollo MedFlight is leading the industry in rapid air medical transport with their state of the art f leet and specialized medical personnel. Their main headquarters are located in Amarillo, TX. Have you ever witnessed a stunning sunrise or gazed up into an endless night sky full of stars and wondered, “How can anyone see this and not believe in God?” That’s a legitimate question, because what you are seeing in the skies is meant to prove that God exists (Romans 1:19-20). However, are the sunrises and the stars enough to produce saving faith in the skeptic? Psalm 19 will give us an answer by showing us two ways in which God reveals himself to us: in nature (his works) and in Scripture (his words). The former is called general revelation and the latter is special revelation. Is there any difference between the two? Let’s f ind out!

NATURE: GOD’S GENER AL REVEL ATION

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard.

Their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them,

and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Psalm 19:1-6

ALL WILL HEAR Every day, every night, every word, and everywhere the heavens proclaim who God is (the glory of God) and what God does (his handiwork). The heavens give God praise and give mankind proof. This is known as the silent witness – the inaudible noise that all will hear. The words “declare” and “proclaim” are both words that carry the idea of announcing and making something known. Notice the other similar words in the verses above: speech, voice, words, and heard. This is God revealing himself through the voice of nature. And let’s be clear here - nature isn’t being worshiped here, nature is doing the worshiping (Luke 19:40)! And we can be certain: all will hear the revelation.

NONE CAN HIDE The psalmist continues to stretch across creation with this revelation. Over and over we read “all the earth,” “end of the world,” “end of the heavens,” etc. Then, using two simple similes (a bridegroom and a strong man), he uses the sun to illustrate that nothing hides from its heat. There is no escaping this revelation. All will hear and none can hide.

It’s important to see here that all of this natural revelation does nothing to us, it only does something for us. According to Romans 1:18-20, God’s “eternal power and divine nature” are seen in creation to leave us without excuse for not knowing that God exists. Paul says, “what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” What he is saying is that God’s general revelation (creation) is only enough to hold us accountable for knowing he exists. Put simply: creation condemns us. But the good news is that while natural revelation is only enough to condemn us, special revelation is able to convert us. So, let’s look at the second way God reveals himself to us.

SCRIPTURE: GOD’S SPECIAL REVELATION UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURE

The law of the LORD is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the LORD is sure,

making wise the simple;

the precepts of the LORD are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the LORD is pure,

enlightening the eyes;

the fear of the LORD is clean,

enduring forever;

the rules of the LORD are true,

and righteous altogether.

The following verses read in a beautifully poetic pattern telling us three things about God’s word: 1) What it is called; 2) what it is; and 3) what it does (think: nouns, adjectives, verbs). Let’s take a quick look.

The law of the LORD (TORAH) refers to the sum teaching of all God has commanded for our instruction.

That it is perfect means it’s whole, complete, suff icient, and comprehensive. And it is reviving the soul. This is a converting, repenting, transforming action. It actually changes (converts) the heart!

The testimony of the LORD is scripture standing as God’s witness for truth and righteousness. It is sure, meaning a f irm support, like a parent’s strong arms supporting a helpless infant. This sure testimony then makes wise the simple mind that is dangerously open, spacious, and wide.

The precepts of the LORD are general responsibilities and principles that govern us. They are right, which means morally straight and level; and they make the heart happy. The commandments are like the statutes, but more specif ic. They show us the uncompromising nature of God’s Word. They are pure and clear, with no dross remaining. And with this clarity comes light (Psalm 36:9) that illumines the way (Psalm 119:105).

Next we read of the fear of the LORD. While not a synonym for God’s word, it is the reverent awe and holy dread that is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). It refers to the response we should have to God’s word: worship. This fear is clean, which simply means it’s acceptable for worship. The fact of it enduring forever moves us from just quality to quantity.

Lastly, his rules are true. These are God’s judgments or verdicts - his standards for judging all things. And they are always true and right (Psalm 119:160; Proverbs 30:5). We now see how God’s special revelation does so much more than his general revelation.

APPRECIATING SCRIPTURE

More to be desired are they than gold,

even much f ine gold; sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalm 19:10-11

Perhaps the greatest reason Christians do not invest in God’s Word is because they do not see the value of God’s Word. The psalmist here gives us two pair of reasons why we should value Scripture.

When they are said to be more valuable than gold (v. 10) the psalmist seeks to increase our desire for them; and in comparing them to be sweeter than honey he seeks to entice our delight for them. In verse 11 we learn by opposite contrast (negative and positive) that God’s word repels us from disobedience and rewards us for obedience.

APPLYING SCRIPTURE

Who can discern his errors?

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight,

O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 19:12-14 We can’t read a poetic and theological masterpiece like Psalm 19 and simply walk away unaffected. Just as there is no escaping God’s visual revelation in the skies, there is also no eluding God’s verbal revelation in the scriptures. As this psalm concludes we see a proper response to God revealing himself and revealing our sin.

As the psalmist stares into the mirror of God’s word ( James 1:22-25), he ends the psalm with a prayer to avoid sin and a praise to offer sacrif ice.

As he prays in verse 12, he doesn’t want to assume he knows his own heart ( Jeremiah 17:9) and can discern his own errors. In verse 13, he also doesn’t want to presume upon the kindness of God (Romans 2:3-5) and therefore asks to be protected from the reality and reign of such sin that evidences this kind of arrogance.

Finally, having realized God’s words declared in the skies and having read God’s words in the scriptures, the psalmist now offers his own words as a sacrif ice of praise. Notice both the

words of his mouth (heard by God) and the meditations of his heart (known by God) be accepted as they are seen by God. The word “acceptable” is often used in the context of God receiving a sacrif ice.

Do you see the difference now? Do you see how God communicates to us both

visually and verbally? Hopefully you now understand the limits of natural revelation

and the unlimited nature of special revelation. God’s works are meant to reveal his

eternal power and divine nature and are enough to condemn (Romans 1:20). God’s words

are meant to reveal even more (Psalm 19:7-9) and are able to convert (v. 7). As you

share the gospel with others, allow this psalm to inform your methodology. Do not rely

on natural revelation (the evidences of God) to do what only special revelation can do. And

remember this – Jesus is the f inal revelation of God, “the Word was made f lesh, and dwelt

among us” ( John 1:14) and God has “in these last days spoken unto us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2).

YEAH!” I don't want to go back to having a permanent 5:15 am alarm set on my phone. But, duty, I mean school, calls.

y heart is to inspire. It has been and probably always will be. I love to make people smile. I love to encourage others to reach their goals and try things they never thought they would. I love to see others overcome.

Often my heart breaks for those around me. My heart breaks for my city, my county, my state. My heart breaks for my nation. My heart breaks for my son. My heart breaks for children who don't know true love. My heart breaks for people who hurt others because most times they, too, have been hurt. My heart even hurts for mean people.

Because there are mean people here. There are bullies here.

I recently read an article about a 12-year-old boy who decided life was not worth living because of the bullies he had to face at school each day.

His mother writes, “I wished he had seen another way out, other than taking his own life.”

I’ve struggled to write about this because it’s something I’ve had to deal with in my own home. It’s tough. It makes me angry. It breaks my heart for my boy.

For the last couple of years my son has been the victim of bullies. He has been called names, teased, taunted in class, sometimes heard by his teachers. This past year his clothes were “accidently” thrown over the shoulders of another student and into a toilet. I was told the situation was handled and that my son could “ just” wear his gym clothes for the remainder of the day because it was still in dress code.

TO THE BULLY- CHILD -

You are so much more than you think. There are so many things you can choose to be other than a bully.

I realize hurting people hurt people, and I am sorry you are hurting. Choose to see the very best in not only other people, but more importantly, yourself. You are important to me, and I don't even know you.

Yes, I truly care. Stand up for others and others will do the same for you.

TO THE PARENT OF THE BULLY -

Your child is not just ‘playing’ and my child is not just ‘sensitive’. it’s not just a joke; It’s not just funny. If another child is not comfortable around your child, there is a problem and YOU need to address the issue.

More importantly, f ind out why your child is acting the way he/she is acting. Help your child understand that all people should be treated with kindness and respect. Remember to treat your child or children with the same respect you would want them to give to others. Age makes no difference when it comes to you being the primary example of how you want your children to act.

TO THE ADULT BULLY -

We’re all adults. We all know better. We should do better. We should lead better. Bullying in the work place and community happens far too often, as well. As leaders in our work places and in our communities, we need to set the bar higher than ever when it comes to how we treat others. We should encourage others in every role. Don’t push your weight to get what you want or to attain a certain position. I personally do not care what your role is. You are person FIRST, and I will treat you as though you are FIRST. You matter to me. Not your title. Not your pay. I respect janitors just as much as I respect the many dwoctors who have taken care of me. We are all important and play equally important roles in our work places and communities.

TO THE BY-STANDER -

You are strong enough to take a stand against an adult bully. If you're still in school, you are strong enough to help end bullying on your campus. We all are. You can tell someone who is gossiping about your peers that you refuse to listen. You can tell someone who is picking on another person to stop. You can befriend those who you know could use a friend. You can choose to encourage someone who looks like they are having a bad day. Because, even the little things matter.

Nature’s Eye is a service provider of forestry, wildlife, environmental and outdoor recreation enhancement opportunities for landowners. On May 18th, owners Blake and Tasha Hamilton hosted a private short course event for The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Plant and tree ID can be one of the most useful tools for any outdoors person. One of the best ways to learn this skill is to make a plant collection. This consists of a notebook or binder of preserved plant specimens that is kept and used as a reference. Using preserved real plants for reference in identif ication can be a huge advantage over a reference book with illustrations or photos.

You are also able to choose which species you want to include, and can customize it for your specif ic geographic area or interests. This can be a fun process for young children and adults alike, and would be a great family project.

The f irst step of creating a plant collection entails forays into the woods, with plant ID book in hand, to collect stems and leaves.

Many federal and state lands and public use areas do not allow collection of plants, so make sure you check regulations and gain permission before you begin collecting. Use garden clippers to cut a 4-6 inch section at the end of a lateral stem, or branch of a tree.

Be sure to never cut the terminal stem, as this will harm the future growth potential of the plant. Many plant ID books include glossaries or illustrations for learning plant/ tree anatomy, so keep an eye out for that section when shopping for a guide.

You want the section of stem you collect to contain at least 3-4 attached leaves and a bud at

the end of the stem. All of these components (the leaves, the bud, and the stem itself ) can be used in identif ication. Once collected, the stems must be pressed and dried so that they can be preserved for future study and reference. Most people employ a plant press for this step. These can be purchased online, or there are many homemade versions, the instructions for which can also be found online. They are a relatively simple design, usually involving two f lat boards and some ratchet straps. You will layer the plant specimens between the boards with pieces of cardboard and newspaper. It can take up to 4-6 weeks for the plants to be suff iciently dried. When this step is complete, you can then mount the dried stems onto cardstock using spray glue or another adhesive and collect them in a binder. The mounted plants can slide into clear plastic binder sleeves for easy viewing and protection.

Once your collection is complete, you will have your own custom plant and tree ID book that you and your family can use as a reference for years to come.

improvements

landowners

implement each year to benef it wildlife

and improve hunting opportunities.

These

concentrations of high quality forage can enhance the hunting strategy of almost any piece of property. Before planting, there are several considerations to make sure you get the most benef it from your plots.

• Have your soil tested. The test results will reveal whether you need to apply supplements like lime. Making sure the soil pH is balanced in each plot area will give whatever you plant the best opportunity to grow to its fullest potential and you will get the greatest yields from your seed.

• Survey what’s already available.

When

you know which resources are already being provided by the existing vegetation on the property, you can customize your food plot plantings to supplement or complement those resources.

• Design plot placement.

Take into account

factors such as visibility, prevailing winds, and stand placement. Use natural funnels and buffers to your advantage.

Strategic design

of plot size, shape, and placement can make a world of difference in your hunting season.

Once your design is laid out, you’re ready to choose your seed mix, perform site prep, plant, and fertilize. When properly implemented along with all of the other elements in the habitat equation, a handful of well-stocked, well-managed plots in strategic locations can provide incredible benef its to both you and your wildlife.

CAMPFIR E R ED SNAPPER Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 5-10 minutes Yields: 4-6 servings INGREDIENTS 4-6 butterf lied whole red snapper 1 large lemon, sliced A pinch of each of the following herbs for each f ish: oregano, rosemary, tarragon, parsley, salt & pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Place a grilling rack over your campf ire.

Use a grilling basket or foil pack to hold your f ish.

A basket is preferred. Lay f ish open in basket, sprinkle with salt and pepper, herbs, and place lemon slices inside each f ish.

Close the grilling basket and place it over campf ire on the grill rack.

Cook f ish over the campf ire 5-10 minutes, f lipping the basket regularly, until the f lesh is opaque and f laky.

Remove f ish from basket and serve!
