efore any man goes in motion, audible is called or lineman gets into his crouch, a coach has to decide what base offense to use that he believes gives his team the best chance to move the ball. In Sweeny and Angleton, the Bulldogs and Wildcats use a run-first, pass-second approach. The same can be said of Alvin. At Brazosport, the Exporters attempt to spread the field, but also can punish an opponent with the run. At Brazoswood, the Bucs try to find the perfect balance between the two. The names are familiar to the dedicated football fan — I-formation, Wing-T, the Spread — but what exactly each means is a little less understood. All rely on some form of misdirection intended to get the defense guessing wrong about where the ball is going and how it is getting there.

“The more you know about what the defense is doing, then sometimes motion and unbalance and sometimes a tight end can give you that information,” Brazoswood head coach Dean DeAtley said. “We do pretty much what colleges do. That is kind of their philosophy, that they will try to do quite a few formations.” There is less guessing about what Sweeny attempts to do on offense, but its Wing-T approach and power blocking schemes make its potent running game work. The Bulldogs rushed for more than 3,000 yards last season, using multiple running backs to reach that total. “We want to try to be physical up front with our line,” said Sweeny head coach Randy Lynch, who used the same philosophy when he coached at Columbia. “We are one of the few teams around

’Cats, Bucs could renew annual rivalry BY JOEL LUNA

A

fter 44 consecutive regular-season meetings on the gridiron, Brazoswood and Angleton ended their football series in 2015. No official word ever surfaced on the cause of the stoppage. Whatever it might have been, however, the annual cross-county skirmish might be renewed. Brazoswood head coach Dean DeAtley and first-year Angleton Wildcat coach Jason Brittain have been in preliminary talks to bring the series back. “This is good for both communities. Now, because of realignment, we probably won’t see this happen for the next couple of years,” DeAtley said. “But some other sports could start playing against each other possibly this year.” DeAtley, who arrived in 2001, has gone 6-9 in 15 meetings against the Wildcats but finished the string on a high note. In 2015, the Bucs stopped a six-game win streak by the Wildcats when first-year varsity kicker Kenneth Almendares connected on a 33-yard field goal to pull out a 32-29 victory at Wildcat Stadium. Earlier in the game, the sophomore had missed a 27-yarder. In the first period of that contest, 43 points were scored between both squads, with the Bucs holding a 22-21 lead. The defenses stepped up from there, slugging it out for the final three quarters. No one knew that would be the last meeting

of the area rivals for some time, and it proved to be a memorable game for putting the series on ice. Brittain, who arrived in the area in 2011 as Angleton’s defensive coordinator, had his headaches with the Buccaneers as well. But he’s gone 4-1 from a defensive aspect. “It’s always been a great series. It is a big rivalry in Brazoria County and coaches get excited about it, kids get excited about it,” Brittain said. “Obviously, through the series, it has been a balanced, competitive series.” Angleton holds the all-time advantage, 23-21, with each team putting together a six-game win streak. Brazoswood’s streak ran from 1972-77. The 2015 meeting wasn’t the only time the rivalry game went down to the final whistle. The teams played a couple of one-point games, both won by Angleton. “Any time you play a rivalry game you throw records and expectations out the window,” Brittain said. “It will be whoever shows up ready to play the best that day.” There have been eight shutouts in the series, with each team getting four. The biggest blowouts have been a 50-0 shutout for the Bucs in 1975 and a 69-28 Angleton victory in 2012. “Coach DeAtley and I have talked and we will re-evaluate it the next realignment,” Brittain said. “We will see if we can get something worked out to see when we can play.”

Billy Foster (25) and Jordan Allen (12) of Angleton tackle Brazoswood receiver Jackson Millar during the second quarter of the schools’ Aug. 28, 2015, meeting at Wildcat Stadium in Angleton. The rivalry game, which had taken place 44 times, has not been played since the 2015 season.

BRAZOSWOOD Looking ahead Size and skill level are a couple of things the Buccaneers will be lacking this season. Of the 52 players on the roster, nine are 6-foot or taller with an average weight of 198.6. Since joining District 23-6A back in 2016, the Bucs have struggled, going 1-12 in 13 district games. This year’s squad is a seniorladen squad with 38 on board, which includes six returning starters, four on offense and two on defense. For the Buccaneers to make it a fairy tale season, many Bucs will have to play out of their minds to catch up to the front-runners in the district. Brazoswood’s last run into the playoffs was in 2012, when they dropped a 42-34 contest to Fort Bend Dulles. The last playoff win for the Bucs was in 2009, when they defeated Fort Bend Kempner 52-29.

BRAZOSWOOD COMEBACK KIDS

Lane Caballero BY JOEL LUNA

On his way to a possible quarterback battle at the 2016 training camp as a sophomore, Brazoswood’s Lane Caballero had his plan derailed. Going up against Clear Lake in a scrimmage, he suffered a torn ACL. “I had just planted my foot to throw the ball and a linebacker went in the bottom of my leg, and my body went the other way, and that was when the tear occurred,” Caballero said. He had just thrown a touchdown and didn’t know at first the extent of the injury. “But then I went to cut during a play and my leg just gave out,” he said “It was bad because it was a pain that I had never felt before. It was some bad stuff, and I figured that there was something wrong.” A doctor’s visit confirmed the tear. “I was devastated because it was my sophomore year, and I had worked all offseason and had lost 30 pounds to get ready,” Caballero said. “It was my first year on varsity and I was so excited, so naturally I was devastated after putting in all of that work. That was the first time that I had seen my dad cry.” A season later, Caballero was back on the football field at 100 percent. Time away from his teammates and the sport he loves had been specifically tough for the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder. “Me, as a football player, I am used to running, cutting, jumping, catching and throwing, but doing rehab it is so isolated,” he said. “But I also couldn’t do all of those things that a normal football player can do. “So I sat there with a rubber band, working, just trying to get back to something I really loved. The isolation made it kind of boring, but you know it also taught me to have patience.” Doubt is inevitable with injuries such as a torn knee ligament. Caballero wondered whether he would return to his old self. “I could not have done it without my teammates, parents, coaches and just my family. Photo by Barclay Fernandez

BRAZOSWOOD They were just awesome,” Caballero said. “At times, I got down, but they were there to pick me up, and no matter what, they were there for me. Even when I would question whether I was going to recover, someone was there to just continue encouraging me.” Caballero worked hard at his rehabilitation, turning what could be a year-long recovery into one that took only four months. Another thing that spurned Caballero’s aggressive mentality with his injury was a former teammate, Jacob Nimtz, who suffered a knee injury at the same time. “He tore his knee as well, so he was right there telling me that I was going to get back and just to keep my head up because it was all part of God’s plan,” Caballero said. “But I was also helping him recover, and whenever he wanted to go to the field, I was there for him. His injury wasn’t as serious, but when he had surgery, I was there for him. We both went to rehab together and just worked through it.” Caballero saw limited action behind Oliver Garcia, but in 2017 Caballero finished with 762 passing yards off 76 completions and 137 attempts. That was good for a 55 percent completion rate, with six touchdowns and three interceptions. In the opening game against Lamar Consolidated, Caballero finally felt vindicated about returning to the football field. “I went back to throw a pass and there was a rush, and they fell on my knee,” he said. “But when I got up, I just said ‘I am fine, here we go.’”

Character building, relationships key to DeAtley’s long tenure BY NATHAN WRIGHT

J

ust as his name fittingly implies, Brazoswood’s Dean DeAtley is the dean of Brazoria County high school football coaches. DeAtley enters his 18th season with the Buccaneers this year, continuing a stop in his career that he wasn’t sure when filled the position he would be here as long as he has.

“I don’t think anyone can ever assume that you are going to be in a place like that, so I am going to say no, just because I understand how the coaching aspect of everything is,” DeAtley said. “But, it’s been a really great place to work. And for that matter, a great place to live and a great place to raise my three kids

and allow them to come through the education system here in BISD.” The Bucs were 2-8 in 2000, the year before DeAtley arrived. They went 5-5 in his first year and were in the playoffs his third season. The program wasn’t in bad shape when he got there, but he knew there were expectations once he got on campus after helping lead La Marque to four state championship game appearances — and three titles — from 1995 to 1998. “I thought it was good,” DeAtley said of the state of the program when he arrived. “Football was important at Brazoswood. I think football has always been important at Brazoswood. I felt very honored to be a part of it. I played Brazoswood in high school and it was some place that, it has always been kind of, the Brazoswood football program is important to the community here. And I think that is very nice.” One of his first goals was to make sure he had the best athletes he could find on campus and they had an opportunity to play if they wished. “When I first got here, I wanted to reach out to any kids that might want to play that hadn’t played and then as you go along, you want the program to improve in any way that it can and obviously you want it to improve with wins and at some point, to make the playoffs,” DeAtley said. The Bucs might not have had a lot of success during his tenure. But winning district titles and making playoff runs hasn’t been as important as the character and improvement of the players under his direction. That is what he considers success.

DeAtley by the numbers Records

18th season 88-89 overall

Best season: 2009 finished 10-4 led Bucs to Region III final losing to Cinco Ranch (26-18)

Worst season: 2017 finished 2-6, going 0-6 in District 23-6A

Playoff seasons: 2012, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2002 “I think obviously you always want to win more,” DeAtley said. “You’d love to win every game and have 18 state championships, 18 district championships. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way and I think at the end of the year, did we make the players better? Are they better by going through the Brazoswood football program. Did we help them along as young men? Yes, football players, but did we help them be better young men by being in our program? I think that is successful.” He has no regrets during his tenure. It has been challenging at times, but he has nothing but pride for the players that have donned the Brazoswood uniform for him. “At some point, if you keep playing long enough, you know, you run into teams that are just very talented, that really challenge you,” DeAtley said.

2001........................ 5-5 2002........................ 4-6 2003........................ 8-3 2004........................ 3-7 2005........................ 4-6 2006...................... 11-2 2007........................ 9-2 2008........................ 3-6 2009...................... 10-4 2010........................ 4-6 2011........................ 4-6 2012........................ 6-5 2013........................ 3-7 2014........................ 4-6 2015........................ 4-6 2016........................ 4-6 2017........................ 2-6

“But I’m also extremely proud of the kids at Brazoswood over the years. I mean, we’ve been to some extremely difficult places to play in their home stadiums. I don’t think in any of the years, have our kids ever been intimidated to play somebody. They have never been starstruck. And I think our kids play until there is no time left to play. I’ve always been very proud of that fact, that the kids never quit before the end of the game. They play as long as there’s time left on the clock.” He considers the greatest rewards of his work to come when former players reach out to him after they have left the school and program and gone on to have successful lives or careers. “I always like it when a kid will text me or whatever and say, you know, ‘Hey, I’m having a child or I’m having my first son and I hope

he plays football,’” DeAtley said. “Just something like that, kids that come back and they are successful from college. Very few of your kids that you coach are going to go on and play football at the next level, let alone at the highest level. Most of the kids you are coaching are going to work, they are going to be husbands and fathers. That is what you hope that you are preparing them for.” With 18 years behind him and looking to the future of the Brazoswood program, there are still things he would like to accomplish. “Last year, we won two games and you can blame the hurricane, but that really has nothing to do with anything so I think you are always striving to do better as you play other teams that are very talented at football also,” DeAtley said. “I think there are a lot of things we can build on. You continue to treat the kids right. Things are ever-changing, so you have to give them new tools so that they can be successful in all things that they do after they get out of high school. I think football does that. I think football is the greatest sport in the world just because there are so many people that have to come

together for the game to be played. “There are so many teammates that you may have absolutely nothing in common with, but yet you have to work extremely close and hard with those teammates for a common goal. There are a lot of things that go on, there is a lot of physical pain, there is a lot of mental toughness, a lot of emotion, and sometimes a lot of successful players have to do a lot of those same things to be successful in real life. After all the games are played, if you are married with three kids, they want you to be successful every day and a lot of those things you learn in football, I think can

help you.” DeAtley is enjoying his time at Brazoswood and has no plans or desire to be anywhere else. There are too many positive things about the job that make him want to stay where he is. “I enjoy coming to work every day,” DeAtley said. “I truly love what I do. I love the people that I work for. I enjoy the people that I work with. I respect and enjoy working with them. And the kids that I coach, I love them. It is always a fun group, the kids that want to play here play for all the right reasons and it is fun being their head coach.”

ANGLETON Looking ahead After losing a lot of talent from the state semifinals last season, the Wildcats still bring back 10 starters, five on each side of the ball. Among them is fourth-year starter Seth Cosme at quarterback, who exploded for 1,726 passing yards in 2017. A productive offensive line not only will help Cosme settle in but also open holes for first year starting tailback, Jordan Jones. The junior has that explosiveness that has allowed the Wildcats to prosper in the Wing-T offense. In a district where there is a lot of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball, Angleton’s defenders once again will have to step up with six newcomers to that side of the ball. Corey Addison, a stellar defender, should help the youngsters make transition from his safety spot. It is the front line however that put a lot of pressure on opponents last season. The defense will count on quickness at linebacker and in the secondary to cover the edges and keep opponents from running outside.

ANGLETON COMEBACK KIDS

Chris Cassidy BY JOEL LUNA

When Angleton offensive lineman Chris Cassidy takes the field for the Wildcats this year, it will be after a happily ordinary off-season routine. “I am excited,” Cassidy said. “This is actually my first full offseason without rehab and just doing everything. I am really excited to smack some heads.” The Angleton offensive lineman missed the most of two whole seasons following surgery to replace part of his femur. He had always known something was wrong with his leg, but he wasn’t sure what. “When I was running, it looked weird,” Cassidy said. “It hurt every time I put weight on it. I have always had it all my life so it was just part of it, something everybody goes through. ”Everybody used to make fun of me because of the way I ran, then my dad finally took me to the doctor and we found out something was wrong with it.” Surgeons did a bone graft, taking another piece of his femur and screwing it in where the missing piece went. That surgery occurred his freshman year, and he ended up missing almost his entire sophomore year rehabbing. “I couldn’t put weight on it for six weeks, so I was bedridden for six weeks, and then for another six weeks I could only walk on it,” Cassidy said. “Then, after 12 weeks, I slowly started to weight lift and eventually my whole sophomore season, I was doing rehab.” Cassidy was able to play Photo by Barclay Fernandez

the last two games of his sophomore year, but it wasn’t easy for him to get back into the physical routine of football. “I didn’t want anyone to get too close to my leg,” Cassidy said. “I was playing with a lot of caution.” Cassidy still sometimes catches himself being protective. His coaches don’t see it, though. “I have never heard him use it as an excuse or try to get out of anything,” Angleton head coach Jason Brittain said. “Everything I see from him is always full go. If he has that, he has it in his head. He hasn’t verbalized it to us.” After about eight months, Cassidy said he began to play with more confidence. Last year, as a junior, he was finally able to play a full season, and then go through a normal offseason to prepare for his senior year. “Last year was amazing,” Cassidy said. “I didn’t feel any pain. It was like a whole new player. I could run faster, I could cut more. I could squat more. I was more explosive.” A healthy Cassidy is important for the Wildcats this season. “Chris is kind of the ringleader of that offensive line,” Brittain said. “He has come so far since he was a freshman. He is one of the leaders of our football team. He is kind of a staple of what we want our team to represent. “He gets after it. He is a hard worker,” Brittain said. “He is a nice kid, but he knows how to play hard.”

ANGLETON Bend Ridge Point in the waning moments of the region final. After a month run into the Class 5A playoffs ending with a heart wrenching loss to Fort Bend Ridge Point (36-35) in the waning moments of the region final, Cosme’s season came to an end starting the final 12 games of his freshman year. Now in his final season under center, 5-foot-9, 175pound Cosme has continued to mature and prosper at the position. He is coming off a monster junior year in which he led the Wildcats to within one game of the 5A DI state championship game. In his three years at Angleton, Cosme has started 38 of the 40 games he has played, including 11 playoff starts. He is 28-10 overall and 83 in the post season. Cosme’s breakout junior season saw him throw for 1,726 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions. “It seems like Seth has been our starting quarterback forever,” current Angleton Wildcat head football coach Jason Brittain said. “He has a very good temperament and he doesn’t get rattled.”

Brittain takes control BY JOEL LUNA

Pirate by birth, Jason Brittain has also passed through being a Ram, Tiger and Bobcat before finally settling into his first football head coaching job as a Wildcat. Brittain had been Angleton’s defensive coordinator since 2011, taking over as head coach and athletics director after the retirement of Ryan Roark in June. Brittain officially was offered and accepted the job this past April. “I wouldn’t be getting this job if our athletics program wasn’t in a great place,” Brittain said back in April. “It is a huge testament to the staff that is already in place and the players that we have had over the past seven years. I am just grateful for the opportunity to keep that thing going.” Born in Sinton, home of the Pirates, Brittain played his youth and high school football there, graduating in 2002. His playing days continued at Angelo State University in West Texas, where he played for the Rams for four seasons.

A linebacker who wore No. 61, Brittain suited up as a freshman, getting in on the action in five games and finishing with 16 tackles. The Ram coaching staff had a different agenda for Brittain the final three seasons, moving him to the secondary and assigning him uniform No. 10. The move paid off both for Brittain and the Rams. In the next three years, he accumulated 215 tackles with six interceptions

Brazoria County FOOTBALL 2018

and two fumble recoveries. After finishing third on the team in tackles in 2003, Brittain finished with 101 tackles to lead the entire defense as a junior. He gained notice off campus, too. He earned recognition as an all-conference defensive back; Academic All-conference defensive back and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-district. Brittain also played in the NCAA Division II National All-star game and served as a team captain.

Angelo State honored him with the Holland Award for leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship and also the Greg Stokes Memorial Scholarship for major contributions to the team, academic excellence and community activities. With a defensive mind, Brittain started his coaching career at San Angelo Central High School as a student assistant, then as a graduate assistant. By 2007, he was ready to jump into the high school ranks full bore, taking over as co-defensive coordinator with the Sealy Tigers. He returned to 5A Central two years later as its co-defensive coordinator before joining Roark’s staff at Angleton. Through the years, Brittain’s complex system took hold as the team’s defense allowed consistently fewer points. In 2016, Angleton’s defense had its stingiest season, allowing just 167 points — half as many as the team surrendered his first year. Last year’s state semifinal team obliterated that mark, giving up only 105 points in 14 games and posted four shutouts. Brittain will continue working with the defense, but has also inserted a couple of defensive coordinators in Gilbert Gardner and Chris Gistorb. ”I am still heavily involved, still doing the game planning but coach Gardner and Gistorb will take some of the daily responsibilities because I have some head coaching responsibilities and athletics director responsibilities I need to deal with,” Brittain said. “I have a great defensive staff, all of these guys have been with me at some point in my career. As far as the routines and procedures, how we do things it should run pretty smooth.” He expects to build on Angleton’s school record 10 consecutive playoff appearances with another postseason berth this year. It is a familiar way for him to cap a season. Brittain has coached 26 playoff games while in Angleton, San Angelo Central and Sealy. “The more you do it the better you get at it,” he said. “When you start playing these good opponents each year in the playoffs, you find out that it will just help you down the road because you have experienced it. A lot of times you cannot learn something until you experience it, so by playing all of these playoff games, I’ve just been able to gain and gain experience.”

BRAZOSPORT Looking ahead With eight returning defensive starters, the Exporters will have to rely on that side of the ball until the young offense catches up. Jermaine Ellis will have to be a catalyst in the secondary and possibly move over to the offensive side of the ball to help out as well. Daraell Preston is coming off an incredible sophomore year at linebacker and looking to take another step this year. Nondistrict games will play a big part in the progression of the offense, with county rival Sweeny providing a strong early test. A couple of returning offensive linemen in Matthew Gamez and Kameron Craddock will play a huge role in how fast the growth of the rest of the offense will come along. Getting the offense to click early will be crucial once district games roll around, with each posing a unique challenge.

BRAZOSPORT COMEBACK KIDS

Marc Boles BY JOEL LUNA

In the midst of a turnaround season under first-year head coach Mike Ferrell, Brazosport’s defensive lineman Marc Boles’ season came to an unexpected end after tearing up his knee. A nose tackle by trade, Boles’ was inserted as an offensive guard for a play. “I usually play nose tackle, but they switched me to tackle because we needed a replacement for a second,” Boles said. “I wasn’t used to it and the guard had pulled, but I was watching the quarterback. My leg was, like, placed in the ground.” A torn ACL on his knee ended the defender’s season. “It was really one of those freak injuries,” Ferrell said. “He wasn’t even contacted.” Boles still remembers the injury. His initial reaction was nothing was wrong. Then he couldn’t stand on the leg. “At first I felt something, then I was like, ‘No, it’s nothing,’” Boles said. “It didn’t feel like it hurt, but then I tried to stand up and I just collapsed.” In those few moments, Boles was forced to watch the remainder of the game and the Ships’ historic season, in which they won eight games and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, from the bench. While supporting his team from the bench, Boles began his rehab. It didn’t take him long to progress to where he felt comfortable enough doing things on his own and begin to regain strength back in his leg. Through it all, Ferrell monitored his progress. “Anytime a young man hurts himself in Photo by Barclay Fernandez

the midst of a season, especially one that is as special as last year, you feel for them because it is hard to keep them engaged,” Ferrell said. “And you want them to feel like they are a part of it. Sometimes they tend to feel like they’re not a part of it because of the injury and Marc’s injury was an unfortunate injury and it hurt our football team.” Back on the field for the 2018 season, Boles’ health could be vital to the Ships’ success this year. “Knock on wood, we were very healthy last year with the exception of him and one other player, so having Marc back healthy is really going to help solidify our defensive line and help us do a better job of stopping the run and get pressure on the quarterback,” Ferrell said.

COLUMBIA Looking ahead Cameron Ward’s improvement under center will play a role in how the Roughnecks will do this season as they aim to get back into the playoffs after being eliminated in the final week a season ago. But he will need help around him, which could include Randy Spears, Luke Arias and Mitchell McGaughey in the backfield. An offensive line that returns three starters in Brandon Ballard, Chris Smith and Cody Mclveen will also play a key role. Ward has a strong arm and will have enough talent to throw to out of the backfield and among his wideouts. Only three defensive starters return from last year for the Roughnecks — Arias, McGaughey and Spears — as they go to a three-man front this year trying to utilize some speed. The change in defensive strategy could help Columbia with the type of offensive talent they are facing this year in district.

hen Harold Cox took a job with Dow Chemical Co. and found his way to Southern Brazoria County, he brought his love for football with him. He had just finished a year and half at Howard Payne University in Brownwood when the job called him. He purchased his first season tickets to watch Brazosport High School at Hopper Field in 1957. He didn’t miss an Exporters game until 1969, when Brazoswood opened. Because he had daughters on the drill team, he switched his tickets to the Buccaneers. However, his seats have never changed. You can still find him in Section B, Row 13. He has some vivid memories from his 12 seasons as a Brazosport ticketholder. “They couldn’t beat Baytown,” Cox said. “The Baytown Ganders beat us 20-something years before we finally beat them in 1967.” After he switched his allegiance and began attending Brazoswood games, one his fondest memories was the 1974 championship game when the Bucs defeated Mesquite. “The state championship was a big one,” Cox said. “My oldest daughter was a senior on the drill team, so that made it even better.” Brazosport ISD planned to honor the 82-year-old Cox for his dedication Aug. 31 at the Bucs’ season opener against Fort Bend Elkins at Hopper Field.

SWEENY At 61 years old, Bill Hatchett has been a supporter of Bulldog nation for 25 seasons. Originally from Detwiler, Louisiana, Hatchett made his move to the Lone Star State where he married Janet Hatchett. “I consider myself one of those loyal, devoted fans, because I don’t get upset at our team for messing up,” Hatchett said. “I don’t think that it will help our team because those are just kids down there, and they are still learning the game. Professionals mess up, but

these are just kids trying to learn and play for their city. There is a lot of pride that goes into that.” For the first 23 years of supporting the hometown boys at Bulldog Stadium, Hatchett sat on Row 10, occupying the first three seats. For a majority of those years, Bill, Janet and their daughter, Holly, religiously attended Bulldog games rain or shine. Through the years, Bill has seen some pretty good football from the home team. Rivalry games with Columbia stand out among his favorite to watch. “I remember during one of the Columbia games we were down by two touchdowns, and then the lights went out because of an electrical surge in the power,” he said. “But when they came back on, we came from behind to beat them.”

COLUMBIA At 77 years old, Peggy Boone has seen quite a few games from the 50-yard line, Row 6, seats 15 and 16, at Griggs Field in West Columbia. Those are the original seats she obtained from her father. Other than three years when Peggy was away at college, her loyalty for the Roughnecks has been there for more then 50 years. “Oh my goodness, I hadn’t missed many games at all until really last year when we missed three of them,” Peggy Boone said. “We went to see my grandson in Kyle, but other then that, we never used to miss.” Through those seasons sitting at midfield, Peggy Boone has been able to watch her own son, Billy Danford, don the Roughneck colors. Just recently, in 2012, she got to witness one of her grandsons, Sam Clinch, play at Griggs Field. This season could be a roller coaster for the former Roughneck cheerleader as she will embark on trips to Kyle to see another grandson play his senior season with the Lobos.

SWEENY Looking ahead Skill position players are in abundance with the Bulldogs this season, part of a plethora of talent on both sides of the ball. Sweeny must avoid playing from behind. Joseph Effenberger will start under center for the first time after starting at linebacker in 2017 and recording 55 tackles. If Cameron Adams picks up where he left off last season, he will be a big help to Effenberger settling in a lot quicker. Adams is just one of the talented weapons that can be used in the backfield to set up an impressive receiving corps and an offensive line that includes a couple of threeyear starters. Depth is something that will be lacking for the Bulldogs this season, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.

SWEENY COMEBACK KIDS

Nic Nail BY NATHAN WRIGHT

After two years rehabbing knee injuries, Sweeny senior lineman Nic Nail is anxious for a full, healthy run with the Bulldogs. Then a sophomore, Nail’s knee gave out on a rain-delayed slippery field in the second game of the 2016 season. That Monday he found out his ACL had torn. For the remainder of his sophomore season, he watched his teammates from the bench. Even into his junior season, Nail could tell something was wrong. “It felt better than it did, of course, but I didn’t feel like I was fully back to myself again,” he said. After facing Cuero in 2017, for the second year in a row, a knee injury brought an early end to his season. “I was happy for my guys, winning games and out there competing. I was proud of them, but at the same time it sucked having to be on the sideline watching them instead of being out there playing with them,” he said. It was hard for his coach to watch, as well. “You feel for the kid,” Sweeny head coach Randy Lynch said. “He works so hard. When I came in at the end of his freshman year, I could tell that he was a special kid by the way he worked and the way he carried himself. “I think maybe he did try to speed through the recovery so he could get back on the field.” This season is different. Nail feels no lingering effects of the injury. “I got my knee to full strength,” Nail said. “I am done with rehab. I am doing regular strength stuff now. I feel ready to go. I feel 100 percent again.” Photo by Barclay Fernandez

DANBURY Looking ahead Small numbers for Danbury continue to hurt the Panthers, especially against a slew of tough programs in their district, but coach Michael Mason has brought some toughness and spirit to the team. A good start to district play against Tidehaven could make for an interesting run at one of the four spots for the playoffs. East Bernard and Van Vleck seem to be the top two dogs in the district, so the Panthers need to take advantage of the rest. Trey Lukasheay’s boot could become a top weapon and keep offenses pinned deep in their territory.

BRAZOSPORT CHRISTIAN COMEBACK KIDS

Hunter Hutchins BY JOEL LUNA

In a season where the Brazosport Christian Eagle football team will need all the bodies it can find, it will be good to see safety Hunter Hutchins return after an injury sidelined him last year. Hutchins went out in October after breaking his left collarbone while making a tackle in practice. “It was just a freak accident, I really didn’t see nothing was wrong with the tackle, but it was mostly how we fell to the ground,” Hutchins said. “At first it seemed like I had angled the tackle wrong but to me it was the fall that hurt my shoulder.” Hutchins at first was more dazed from the injury. “The pain was pretty bad, but at first it felt fine, mostly because of the adrenaline,” he said. “On the ride to the hospital, the pain really set in.” An incoming junior, the Eagles have probably one of the smallest rosters in quite a few seasons. The numbers are way down from a decade ago, when Brazosport Christian had enough players to field 11-man teams for a couple of seasons. The smaller roster also means a tighter bond among the players. “Our motto last year was brotherhood, and on the day that the injury happened, most of the team was at the emergency room with me so that helped a lot knowing they were there,” he said. After surgery, Hutchins learned what therapy was all about. “With a titanium plate in my shoulder, I did a lot of sensor units,” Hutchins said. “Those are the pads that they placed on me and gave me shock to the injury. I also did a lot of light weightlifting just to strengthen that area again. We mostly used weight balls, dumbbells just targeting the shoulder.” A football player since his seventh grade, Photo by Barclay Fernandez

Hutchins was released last March to the weight room. He was given a clean bill of health and able to return to the practice field in July. “If I learned anything from the injury it was kind of learning how to tackle correctly,” he said. “Aside from that, the injury taught me more moral stuff with my team. I was still there for every game with them throughout the whole season. It was frustrating at times just standing there, but at least I got to be there.” Brazosport Christian opened training camp on Aug. 1 and though Hutchins was a bit apprehensive at first, it took just one hit to get him back in form. “I was kind of scared at first but when I got that first hit it was mostly numb but that was it,” Hutchins said. “Ever since that first play where I felt some contact everything has been going good in practice.” As he continues to work on returning to the starting lineup in the secondary, at times last year Hutchins was relegated to the defensive end spot whenever a blitz was called. Hutchins’ injury to his left shoulder also taught the southpaw how to adjust. “For a while I only had one arm, so for a while it was hard to carry my bookbag or my equipment,” he said. “I basically had to learn how to just carry things. I also couldn’t write or anything since I am a lefty, so I learned how to write right-handed.”
