Too much to do & not quite enough time on your hands?

In the 1950s, scholars worried that, thanks to technological innovations, Americans wouldn’t know what to do with all of their leisure time. What wishful thinking!! Today, Americans are overworked, putting in more hours than ever. Technology disturbs our leisure time, our family time and even our consiousness. Juggling between work, family and personal needs makes it easy to get sucked into the never-ending list of to-dos and end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

Jerri’s Corner Thoughts

Live simply, give more, and expect less. What great thoughts to govern our life by and like it or not we have been forced to do these very things. It would be nice then if we could also free our hearts from hatred and our minds from worry. We hear from our highly respected health professionals that we need to stay home and lock down and immediately the worry thoughts come and rightly so. We want to protect ourselves, our children and our seniors so it is reasonable to follow the strictest guidelines. Then we hear from the professionals that predict even more devastation if our economy fails. We worry that we will go into another “great depression”. So, what is the answer? I believe balance and prayer is the key. Protect yourself and others by wearing a mask when you go out until we know for sure how this disease spreads. Use common sense when you are in a crowded place and get out as soon as possible. By all means, support our businesses in every way that you can while practicing safe social distancing and pray. Pray for our families, for our economy and most of all for our leaders while they are making tough decisions. Enter into the presence of God, push back the darkness and make a difference in your life and in our country.

Vice President Mike Pence praying with the Coronavirus Task Force

“Finally, my brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10-12

Pandemic Pearls

by Amy Plummer

As we all struggle with the changes that COVID-19 has made in our lives, here are some hints to how to remain sane in a world that seems crazy. I promise not to talk about masks, gloves, hand sanitizer or toilet paper! I would rather talk about strategies to keep us happy and healthy while we are stuck at home. First, I recommend not being stuck in the house! Take a walk, sit in the backyard, wash your car; do something that takes you outdoors. Sunlight has a dramatic effect on our mood and energy level. We know being in the sun helps our body produce more vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an integral role in our fatigue level and in our bone formation. Taking an extra dose of vitamin D can also help. Sunlight tends to make us happy. If you cannot actually go outside, at least sit by a window and enjoy the light. Exercise. Whether you sit in a chair and rock a hundred times or you run five miles, exercise can help relieve stress. It could also be a time that you can focus on something besides the “pandemic”. From a health standpoint, weight-bearing exercise (at least 3-4 days a week) has a beneficial effect. You might want to follow an exercise tape, find an online Zumba class or, like me, just use the elliptical in the garage. Not only does it clear your

8

Kid-and-Kaboodle.com

mind and reduce your stress, but it can also prevent the increasing weight gain from being at home. Take time for yourself. This is especially important for those parents that are home-schooling their kids. Everyone needs “alone time.” That sounds odd with social isolation driving everyone nuts, but there is a difference between being alone and having “me time.” I believe everyone should take at least thirty minutes to an hour of time to just be. That may be in the bathtub, reading a book, doing devotionals or running a couple of miles. Do something that you really enjoy - that makes you happy and helps you relax. Lastly, I recommend taking advantage of social media and maintaining contact with friends and family. FaceTime your friends, message your mom, dialogue with your dad. Keep the lines of communication open with those around you. It is important to remind yourself and your loved ones that you are not alone in this world – just stuck at home. The Coronavirus pandemic has been difficult for many, and we all are looking forward to some normalcy in our lives. I do not know when, or if, things will return to the way they were. We can only continue to look for good in every day and find ways to make our “new normal” better. I hope some of these suggestions will help. The most important thing is to stay safe, stay healthy and find reasons to be thankful and happy.

Redefining Church Brian Bunn

As I sit here, typing this article, I am like many people who are used to going to church every Sunday, that have not been able to for the past 6 weeks or so. As I have been contemplating what this means for me as a Christian, I have to ask myself a few questions. What does the bible say about church? Is the building the church? What role do I play in church? I am hoping that we can unpack these questions together. When the time comes that we are again able to meet with other believers, maybe we will have a different understanding of the church. The majority of the time that the word church is translated from the Greek into our bibles, it is from the word ekklesia. Ekklesia is defined as the assembly or congregation of believers in Christ. It doesn’t say anything about the building itself. In fact, even in the old testament, God says Heaven is his throne, the Earth is my footstool, what kind of house can you build for me? This is mentioned again in Acts 7:48 when Stephen says that God, the Most High, does not dwell in houses made with human hands. Paul writes to the church in Corinth that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. God dwells in us, not in the building. So, it seems as though God is not interested in the building itself, but in the people who attend there. So does it matter that I meet with other believers or can I just worship God on my own? The answer is yes to both questions. We are able to meet with God on our own, but it is also very important to meet and worship together as the church. Jesus says where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name there I am in the midst of you. One of

Jesus’ disciples, Peter, wrote in his letter that we are being built together as living stones into the house of God with Jesus Christ as our corner stone. So it doesn’t matter whether you are only able to meet by yourself, with your family, or in whole assembly, God is there and you are the church. It seems that many times when we would go to church, we would go as a spectator, listen, learn, and leave. Is this the role God has us to play in the ekklesia? No, I don’t think so. Paul talks once again to the church in Corinth and mentions that we all have a role to play. He compares the church to a body. As we all know, it is very important that every part of our body is there performing its function. Our hand is necessary to pick things up. Our eye is important to see. Not to mention our internal organs. Every single part is important. He continues by writing, the hand can’t say to the eye, I don’t need you. So it is with the assembly of believers called the church. Hopefully, soon enough, we will be able to meet and worship together as the church and maybe in a building. When that day comes, I pray that you will attend knowing that you are an important piece of the church puzzle and have a role to play that only you can do. God has given us unique gifts and callings for a reason. So that when we come together as his body, we can function the way he created us to do. My wife and daughter have been working on a puzzle during these days at home, and it is easy to see how every piece is vital to be able to see the whole picture. So it with the church.

He is thankful for all life has given him, even in the ups and downs, he rests in the all sufficient grace of God and the eternal hope of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Positive effects of the Corona virus - Real Estate industry

Carol A. Nagel

Social Distancing has activated the industry to become more than just familiar with the use of Technology. We have come to rely more on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok (I asked my grandchildren to help me), FaceTime, embedding a video in our email and other skills. We have had to shift the industries major way of interacting with customers/clients, from face to face contact to: other forms: such as video conferencing and countless reliable social media venues. Areas that have been impacted: introduction/interview meetings, contract offers and negotiations, mortgage financing, final walk through of a home/lease have become completely electronic, providing the artificially created signatures and date stamping by special secure programming. Funding has morphed from checks/cashier checks to new creations and implementations used by various Title Companies. A new more secure electronic form of conveying currency, on an extremely local level has been their solution to that issue. The updating and creation of many Mobile Apps assist the Agent in operating with the upmost efficiency and accuracy, again thanks to Technology. Side note: guess I should have thought about becoming a programmer......... Continuing education (CE) required for all Texas Agents is being conducted solely in virtual class rooms; complete with a human monitor of the “classroom”, in order to determine that the student has met the State and National mandated requirements for the Agent/Broker to receive the CE credit. Books/study guides can be printed or saved electronically by the student

at home sheltering in place. Subject matters have expanded to include conducting business with total electronic signatures, conducting safe and inclusive videos of open houses. Another positive result of the Corona Virus is that most Agents are completing more hours of CE requirements to improve their accreditation levels. No, I am not writing this article in my PJ’s or by the pool; okay, I am not in my business attire either. I have learned that time management has risen to a new level for the Real Estate Agent, as well as other self-employed individuals that want to “Excel beyond their client/customers’ Expectations.” Getting dressed for business every work day morning has a very positive influence on the production level of the day. I do know that the Virus has elevated the Real Estate Agent their knowledge of Social Media, Videography, Mobile Apps, electronic signing and dating of a multitude of documents. I can only relate to the direct educational/social distancing experience that I have had with, HAR (Houston Association of Realtors), TREC (Texas Real Estate Commission), Title Companies, Texas Association of Realtors, Videographers’, and NAR (National Association of Realtors), which has been extensively directed to the Customer/Client , Agents and everyone in the Real Estate Industries’ health and safety.

Carol Nagel resides in Kingwood. In addition to her passion for flower gardening, reading and being a grandmother, she has been a Realtor in Texas since 2004. She has served on the WCR – Lake Houston Chapter (Women’s Council of Realtors). As an ABR (Accredited Buyers Rep.) she specializes in Residential Real Estate. Lakeland Elementary School students are experiencing the performing arts at a young age through a new district initiative. Humble ISD implemented a Performing Arts Wheel in August 2019 at Lakeland and will expand the program to North Belt Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year. “We’re giving elementary children the opportunity to experience orchestra, band, theater, choir, mariachi and dance so that they can have those experiences earlier in their educational career,” Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen said. “We want younger children to explore – and that’s what a wheel does. It gives you a taste of a lot of different things where you can say ‘Wow, this really resonated with me and I love this! Or, I didn’t really love it, but now I know, so that when I’m older and choosing what I want to do and be in middle and high school, I’ve had a lot of different experiences.” All students at Lakeland participate in the Performing Arts Wheel. In kindergarten through second grade, students learn the basics of rhythm, movement, song, musical notation and story.

In third grade, students choose from ukulele, recorder, piano and theater/dance. For fourth and fifth grades, students choose from guitar, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, violin, percussion, and choir/dance/theater. “Research shows there is a correlation between experiencing fine arts and academic excellence - partly due to the motivation to come back to school each day,” Lakeland Elementary School Principal Lucy Anderson said. “One of my greatest joys is hearing the students creating music. At the beginning, they did not know how to hold their instruments, but by Spring Break, the walls echoed strains of students playing instruments together and mostly on key! This program has permeated every aspect of our students’ lives. We have seen a decrease in discipline issues. As students learn rhythm and song, they also learn math, reading, and the importance of staying focused to a director’s cue. These skills have impacted the behavior and academics of our students.” For parents, seeing their children perform brings joy. “Parents are thrilled. They are super excited,” Anderson said.

“Participating in the performing arts is both a mental and physical activity. The arts encompass reading, math, history, language, and even science. Students experience all this in a collaborative environment, working together with their classmates and teachers to create a memorable performance. They’re thinking, reading, analyzing, feeling, performing and creating.” – Dr. Elizabeth Fagen Humble ISD Superintendent of Schools Follow Dr. Fagen on Twitter @ElizabethFagen To learn more about Lakeland Elementary School, including its new campus opening in August 2021, visit www.humbleisd.net/lle

Daryl’s Angels

by :Emi Lynn

My son watched me intently as I studied the tract he had handed me and as he turned to leave, he asked “what are you thinking” and I answered “probably the same thing you are thinking” and with that, he looked directly at me and said with a question in his voice “Angels”? It was 1985 and my aunt had been diagnosed with leukemia. My brothers and I decided to have a prayer meeting especially for her. A day was chosen and announced in Church that anyone who wanted to help us pray was welcome to come. From the first week we had a good attendance and more needs were brought for prayer than just my aunt’s. This prayer meeting continued for so long that there came a time that no one but us knew how, why or when this prayer time was originally started. The meetings were so successful that we had visitors attending and many special needs were met, but my most memorable experience occurred in the very beginning. On the second or third week of prayer, I came in about 7:30 and knelt down with others around me and began to pray for my aunt. She, after all, was the sole reason I was there. About five minutes into my prayer, the familiar warmth of the Holy Spirit came upon me. I suddenly blurted out, aloud, “God, be with Daryl right now and bless him” That was all I said. In that short minute, I had time to think “how could God bless him right now, he is working at our Video Store”, not very conducive to interacting with the Spirit of God. Never- the- less, I made a few more 22 Kid-and-Kaboodle.com

requests of God to touch my son. Then I resumed my prayer for my aunt and the prayer meeting ended that night, rather uneventfully for me. Early the next morning, the phone rang and on the other end was a very emotional voice. My son asked “Were you praying for me last night” He had no idea that I was at a prayer meeting, unfortunately our busy schedules left little time for sharing. My answer was yes, although had it not been for the Spirit of God, the answer would have been no. He then asked “what time, do you remember” and of course I did because it was at the beginning of my prayer time so I responded, “about 7:35.” There was silence on the other end of the phone and when he did speak, it was with great difficulty and with much emotion as he began to recount his experiences from the night before. A lady came in the store that he had never seen before nor since. She started witnessing to him about the Lord and how he needed to get ready and stay ready to meet Him. .After a while, she suddenly blurted out, “Where is your Mother” and as he nodded and said he didn’t know, she exclaimed in a bold voice, “I’ll tell you where she is, she is at Church and right now, she is praying for you.” He said he thought that was a little strange because he knew there was no scheduled worship service on Tuesday nights but she was so emphatic that he glanced at the clock on the wall and it was exactly 7:35. He recounted that she stayed with him until he closed at 9:00pm. She followed him and talked

all the time, while he returned movies to their shelves and went through his regular nightly closing duties. She walked out the door with him as he locked up. Strange, he thought, as he left the store, she never rented a movie or even looked for one. On the way home, and still a little unsettled by the unusual visit, he stopped at a convenience store. He was stopped in an aisle and looking for whatever he was after when he became aware of a black gentleman stopped in front of him. The man had a brochure in his hand and was offering it to him as he said something like “I am supposed to give you this” or possibly, “I need to give you this:” Daryl took it and read “Are you ready to meet God”. He immediately looked up and there was no one in sight. He franticly searched, going quickly down each aisle in the small store, but the stranger was nowhere to be found. With that startling bit of information, my son then hung up the phone, and left me to ponder these events. Soon, he was at my home with the tract that

was given him the night before. The little brochure was not unlike many church tracts I had seen before with a message and scriptures to back it up. Most religious organizations have them in abundance. But, this one did not have the familiar stamp of a Church on the back. I searched it completely. There was no contact name of a person or organization, no one to call except God Himself. After Daryl had opened the store and got everything settled, he called and informed me that a young family friend had called when he first arrived and invited him to a service at his Church that night. I asked him if he was going and he responded with “how can I. I have to close tonight”. As the day wore on, I decided to go. It was a very enjoyable and informative service. What was the title of the message preached by the evangelist that night? Angels and how they are in our midst and serving and ministering to us, seen and unseen.

PSALM 91:11

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

HEBREWS 13:2

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares

Endure Every Challenge Ahead by: Deborah Elum, Author & Speaker

I could see “under construction” signs for miles. They had posted them for at least two months to announce the upcoming road construction site project. I knew that I could expect slow-moving traffic, more noise, and construction equipment everywhere along the route. I enjoyed driving down this particular road with its potholes because there was always less traffic. However, I knew all that would change once the construction project started. Two months later, as I entered the construction zone, workers were there holding up signs to slow down as the road narrowed from two lanes into one. As I looked around, I realized that this project could take months and even a year before it was completed. There were no detours I could take to get around the project. Finally, months later, when the road was completed, it had been totally repaved with turning lanes added. Life has a way of holding up a “Challenge Ahead” sign. There will be no detours or routes around them that you can take. It may even cause you to wonder if your life will ever be normal again. You have to believe that God will use every challenge to help you construct something that will help you endure other challenges ahead. In Philippians 1:6, the word of God encourages you to know that: “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Deborah’s other books are also available on Amazon.com. Sammy is seven years old and his sister Lindy is six years old. They live in a small house with a small yard. They have never had a pet of their own to care for but everyone in the family hears about their wish for something of their own to love and care for just about every single day. They even told their neighbor, Mr. Dodd.

One day, their Mother called them into the Living room, “Lindy, Sammy, Look!! Mr. Dodd brought some sweet chicks over for you. “Can you take good care of them?” Mother said.

Lindy!!!! Sammy shouted with a horrified look on his face. “Be careful with our baby chicks. Hold them gently. “ “But I love them so much. I want to hug them, Lindy replied, as she squeezed one of them gently.

“We need to give our chicks names”, Sammy said as he placed all three of them gently in their basket.

And we need to baptize them so they can go to Heaven, Lindy said excitedly. Can we baptize them, Sammy? Can we please, please? I guess we can, Sammy replied as he looked sweetly at Lindy. But how do we know if they believe in Jesus? asked Sammy.

“I know they do!! Lindy squealed, jumping and clapping. Name them Sammy, she said, so we can baptize them in Jesus’ name.

Sweetie Pie, Yummy Cakes and Sugar Candy, Sammy said as he touched each one gently on the head.

Sammy, Lindy squealed excitedly, Bring Sweetie, Yummy and Sugar in here. We have Mother’s water bucket in the kitchen. We can baptize them now.

Because you believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, I baptize you in the name of Jesus, Sammy said as he ducked each little chick into the mop water and quickly brought them out.

Sammy, I’m worried about Sweetie, Yummy and Sugar, Lindy said as she finished drying them off. They are acting funny.

Mommy! Mommy!, Lindy cried as she and Sammy ran into the living room. We baptized our little chicks in your mop bucket and they can’t stand up!

Oh No, Mother screamed as she looked at Sammy and Lindy. There was clorox in that water. Clorox is very bad for animals and humans if you don’t use it for what it was made to do. I am afraid all you can do is pray because they may not get well.

Pray very hard and believe, Daddy said, as he walked in the front door.

Oh, Please God, Please, Please, don’t let our little sweetie, yummy and sugar die. Please make them better. Lindy and Sammy prayed over and over as they knelt on the living room floor.

Oh, Thank You, Jesus. Look Mommy, Look, Lindy, Sammy screamed. God answered our prayers Our little chicks are well.

I AM A RAMSEY KID

By Beth Ann Johnson

THE TREE

Growing up in a house full of kids, there was never a lack for entertainment or things to do. We had chores every week and year round, so routine ordered our household well. We got up early and went to bed early; usually at 8:30 pm. We thought it a luxury to stay up an extra hour (on occasion) during the summer months to catch lightning bugs. It was an exciting thought to think you might just go to bed with a mason jar full with them! We each had bicycles and could ride all over town without a care. Our backyard was a neighborhood gathering place and kids from near and far came to play. Kickball, first-bounce-or-fly, and running-tag were favorites in the spring and summer. When we girls got old enough, the Ramsey kids played the Messer kids in ‘soft’ tackle football. The Mossbarrger’s had no kids at home, but they pretty much gave us free rein to play in their yard, also. It was a large lawn, level and good for team running. The back third of it banked steeply up, maybe ten feet. Many a round of King-of-the-hill battled on there and the fun of being wrestled off gave way for a good rolling tumble down the hill in laughter! The best of fun, though...was playing in ‘the tree’! ‘The tree’ was a grand maple that stood taller than our two-story home & spanned the entire width of the front yard, from the porch on one side, over to and covering the hedges that lined our property on the other. The branches were strong and like rooms in a house, ample space and access to play in every part of it, top to bottom. The lowest branch to even get up in the tree was high enough you had to be lifted just to reach it...or you could lean your bike against the trunk and ladder your way up, if alone. In several places, branches clustered to form perfect “L” shaped chair/ottoman type places to fully relax. My big brother Bryan read many a book up there! Around age eight, I was spotted at 30 Kid-and-Kaboodle.com

roof level by the father/son team who were re-roofing our home. Sonny and Cot were laughing to mom and dad saying, “We started to get on the ladder to come down, looked over and saw Beth Ann in a ballgown and heels up in the tree!” These items came in a big box of things given to us kids for play. My favorite, favorite thing to do was...what I called ‘Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey!’ These were two popular TV shows back in the 1960s and I watched them both nearly every day (M-F). I was much too young to have a romantic thought about these two handsome actors who played these leading roles, but my thing was the drama of it all! Whatever happened in the programs that day, I re-enacted the conditions or symptoms (with moans and facial contortions expressing pain) while reclining opposite two vertical limbs just inches apart and an arm’s length away. One limb was Dr. Kildare...consulting with the other limb; the surgeon, Dr. Ben Casey. Of course, I play out all three parts in my head and enjoyed being sick or dying everyday while my heroes brought me back to life! When the good Lord gave me my imagination, He gave me a wild one! Be safe, dear friends. Let’s do this social-distancingmask-wearing-hand-washing-quarantine-thing with gusto! It may save a life!
