BOERNE Hill Country Mile Despite its close proximity to San Antonio, Boerne has managed to retain its Old World charm and has remained one of the most popular Texas Hill Country destinations. In fact, Boerne has routinely been lauded in regional and national media as being a top destination to visit, raise a family, or retire. And there’s good reason for it. Not only is Boerne blessed with natural beauty and lush, scenic hills that provide a perfect backdrop, but they are also progressive and future-minded while keeping a keen eye on their storied and proud past.

Today, more than 140 historic structures remain and many of these historic buildings along Boerne’s famous Hill Country Mile have been repurposed as restaurants and retail shops.

HISTORY Boerne was settled in 1849 by a group of German immigrants who brought with them their own language, customs and music, much of which is still alive over 150 \HDUV ODWHU 7KH VHWWOHUV Ă€UVW FDOOHG WKHLU WRZQ Tusculum. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to “Boerneâ€? in honor of Karl Ludwig Borne, a German author and publicist who inspired many young Germans to leave their homeland and travel to the new world.

Soon, the town would boast a gristmill, SRVW RIĂ€FH EODFNVPLWK VKRS OLYHU\ VWDEOH butcher shop, saloon, general store and a private school. The town was chosen as the county seat in 1859, and in 1870 the limestone courthouse was built and today remains the second oldest courthouse in Texas in continuous use.

There are more than 140 other historical buildings around town, and recently some of Boerne’s treasured jewels have been painstakingly restored to their architectural pasts including the Joseph Dienger Building (1890), which today serves as the home of the newly opened Dienger Trading Co. and Philip Manor Square (1866), which began as a private residence and later became the home of the early Boerne shooting club, as well as a hotel and polo club and has now been gorgeously restored to The Legendary Texas Polo Club at Philip Manor 8 | VisitBoerne.org

Square and Captain Turquard’s Saloon. In IDFW OHJHQG KDV LW WKDW WKH ÀUVW SROR PDWFK in the United States was played just outside of Boerne.

Additionally, the Carstanjen-Hall Mansion (1876), which was a private home as well as a variety of restaurants over the years, was recently purchased and completely restored back to its original glory and will soon open as a retail venue. A walking map of Boerne’s historic buildings was detailed by the Boerne Area Historical Preservation Society and is available at VisitBoerne.org or at the Boerne Visitors Center (1407 S. Main).

Aside from the architecture, perhaps Boerne’s most treasured history is a rare, illustrated folio-edition 1614 Low German Bible. One of only six known bibles of Martin Luther’s High German translation, this treasure is on display at the Patrick Heath Public Library.

Boerne’s rich and storied past and its resident’s commitment to keeping the heritage alive for future generations have made the city a popular place for both tourists and residents. Art and design shops, galleries, restaurants, lodging, and some of the city’s most stunning historic buildings can be found including St. Peter’s Catholic Church, an iconic limestone structure built high on a hill overlooking the city. The church was modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730) with twin towers that rise 65 feet in the air.

Next door, The Phillip Manor has seen many uses over the last 150 years, and now has been restored into a boutique hotel, pub and event center. Across the Cibolo Trail old San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad street, the two-story triple column structure route that brought early visitors from San with arched windows is the Victorian style Antonio to Boerne. On both trails you will Carstanjen House (also called The Mansion ÀQG QHZ WUHDWV WR GHOLJKW WKH H\H 6HYHUDO House). The Hill Country Mile is all about community, not only providing a better place to live, but also a better place to visit. Boerne’s Patrick Heath Library, which opened in 2011, is a state-of-theDUW /((' *ROG &HUWLÀHG VTXDUH foot facility. They offer free WiFi, live music monthly and have a rare Low German Bible from 1614 on display. The library itself is a beautiful facility, but the grounds are just as fabulous. In addition to gorgeous native plants, they also feature a Heritage Plaza with a windmill, smokehouse, rainwater catchment tank and grape arbor, along with an outdoor classroom and multiple quiet areas to read. New to the facility in the summer of 2015 will be an outdoor amphitheater.

CAVE WITHOUT A NAME Cave Without A Name is often called â&#x20AC;&#x153;one of the most beautiful caves in Texasâ&#x20AC;? because of the breathtaking world full of natural formations that await visitors as they reach the interior of the cavern. An underground ancient river system carved out the caverns. This living cave features stunning stalactites, stalagmites, drapery, columns, thrones, delicate soda straws, cave ÂśEDFRQ¡ PDJQLĂ&#x20AC;FHQW Ă RZVWRQHV DQG ULP stone dams. It is the least commercialized cave open to the public in Texas and it is a well-preserved, natural area that draws serious cavers,
