Epic Reunion for this 36th annual exceptional gathering of “Good People.” MuiscFest 2022 marks the incredible milestone of being SOLD OUT for the 20th consecutive year—and it happened in just minutes after going on sale. Over the past few months, we rolled out several new elements of The MusicFest process, including the new online reservations and pre-reservations process and the introduction of The MusicFest Traditions-Loyalty Program. We’re excited to continue with improvements and additions as we now gather in Steamboat. New unique venues will host shows this week, there’s a new online ticket system for the select complimentary show reservations, and we have exciting special festival events planned, including a 21-gun salute presented by Warhorse Ranch as part of MusicFest’s recognition of frontline workers and all who serve our country. Throughout this program, you’ll get a sneak peek at other special performances planned and other advancements that are part of The MusicFest’s continuing commitment to take this event to the next level. The MusicFest app has also been upgraded and is free for download. Make sure you get it to have the festival schedule at your fingertips. It’s a privilege to present this year’s The MusicFest Artists Tribute to a Legend Honoring Jerry Jeff Walker with Special Guest Django Walker. “Jerry Jeff ” passing in 2020 hit us all on many levels, but knowing he continues to live on as a major influence to our music provides some level of solace. I was honored to have produced (with Mark Scheburg) several Jerry Jeff Walker

shows years ago and, through that, to get to meet one of my music heroes and a young Django. Read more about the tribute and Jerry Jeff ’s influence on page 34. The MusicFest, known for its incredible entertainment and lodging package value plus unique out-of-the-box specialty events, continues its legacy as “The Super Bowl of Texas Music” (as coined by a MusicFest artist). This year’s all-star lineup of “Great Music” includes more specialty shows, unique collaborations, intimate and full rocking shows, plus throwback tributes and artists. Take the time to review the extensive schedule of nearly 300 hours of live music. You can’t see it all without being three places at one time, but even still, I promise you’ll experience the best of the best and create memories of a lifetime during this coming week. a few friends and musicians. More than three decades later, the “big ski trip” has more than lived up to The MusicFest name, cultivating a festival experience that’s like no other. For hundreds of music fans (and artists, too), these five days in Steamboat are as fixed on their calendars as Christmas and the Fourth of July. It’s not unusual to meet someone at a show who’s been attending The MusicFest for 10 or even 20 years. There are multigenerational groups, couples who met at The MusicFest, and so many others who consider it a reunion each year. the most fun week! Load up on that Vitamin C and get yourself hydrated because you’re about to have the best time on (and off ) the slopes. After 18 years at The MusicFest, I’ve learned a few things and I’m here to give you that insider knowledge. Take note of these pro tips.

ET READY for
Take Care of ID Checks ASAP
You only have to get your ID checked once, and you can get it done as soon as you arrive. Take advantage of that to avoid lines on the first night!

Wear Your Wristband
Keep that Dickson Productions– issued MusicFest wristband on at all times. It’s your ticket into every show. You don’t want to lose that, or you’ll be screwed!

Keep Your Phone Charged
You’re going to want to download the official MusicFest at Steamboat mobile app to see the festival schedule. Enable push notifications to get important venue updates (you can turn it off when you leave).

Plan Wisely
It’s impossible to do everything. Shows overlap, so plan your day of shows in advance!
Show Up Early
Some venues are smaller than others and may reach capacity, so get to your favorite shows early (but not too early; no need to show up before doors open). Otherwise, just know you may have the “onein/one-out” situation! If you do, don’t stress. Pull out The MusicFest app and take a look at what other shows are happening at the same time.

Be Open to a Backup Plan
There are SO MANY fun shows— don’t get PO’ed if you can’t get into a certain show. Not sure where else to go? Just head to the tent… it’s always so much fun!

Pre-Reservations The MusicFest is a family, and the prereservations system helps guarantee each year will be another Epic Reunion. The MusicFest 2022 sold out for the 20th consecutive year with its new online reservations system, and prereservations also went online this year along with the introduction of the Traditions-Loyalty Program that rewards longevity with early access. Pre-reservations occurred in December, which means you can sit back and enjoy your week in Steamboat knowing you’ll be back again in 2023!

The HUCK Foundation assists in efforts and provides financial assistance for Helping Underprivileged Citizens and Kids who are in need of medical services or treatment, under the care of child protective services, victims of family violence. The foundation has also supported first responders of catastrophic events or line of duty deaths, disaster relief efforts, and local youth education programs. The MusicFest and the HUCK Foundation have donated over $150,000 to support these causes!

area, attending shows at a few venues requires a little more effort. With that in mind, The MusicFest offers Complimentary Show Reservations, which allow MusicFest participants to reserve entry into specific shows. This year, reservations will be made in The MusicFest festival app on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 9 a.m. the day of the show. Each attendee can reserve up to four entries per show. You and your party of up to three other claimed reservations must arrive together at the venue within 15 minutes of doors or gondola opening, and you must present your proof of all reservations on your phone. (See The MusicFest app for information on performing artists, door times, venue location and more.)

How do I make my reservations?
Have your lodging booking ID number or MusicFest lift ticket number available. Open The MusicFest app, click on Complimentary Show Reservations beginning at 9 a.m. on the day of the show. Follow the directions.
Where do I find my lodging booking ID number or lift ticket number?
You received the lodging reference number when booking your MusicFest lodging package, and your lift ticket voucher will have a 7-digit number on the back. We recommend taking a picture of your lift number when you check in and receive your wristband.
Do I need a lodging or lift ticket number for each person I plan to make reservations for?
No, you can make reservations for up to 4 people (all must be MusicFest participants) with just your number.
Do Complementary Show Reservations cost anything?
No. This is a free benefit to enhance the festival experience.
If I have reservations and MusicFest wristband, am I guaranteed access to the show?
ONLY if you arrive within 15 minutes of the stated door time. Anyone with reservations that arrives 15 minutes after door times forfeits their guaranteed access and

may only be allowed in the venue (with MusicFest wristband) pending capacity. Late arrivals with reservation will not be allowed to the front of a line if a line exist.
Do reservations guarantee seating or select seats in a venue? No. What happens if I can’t make the show after I made reservations?
Cancel your reservations ASAP—at least one hour prior to doors via the The MusicFest app. IMPORANT NOTE: Anyone not utilizing a reservation risks being blacklisted from future Complimentary Show Reservations. Please cancel any reservations ASAP if you aren’t going to use them.
Can I get reservations after all reservations have been claimed?
Maybe. Continue to check the app throughout the day. Reservations may become available if attendees who previously claimed them cancel. They will then be available to claim on a first-come, firstserved basis. If you don’t get reservations, you may still be able to get into the show. Anyone holding reservations that don’t arrive within 15 minutes after doors open forfeit their guaranteed access. At that point, door staff will determine space (be patient; this may take time) and will allow entry to non-reservation MusicFest participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Claiming reservations for select shows has been part of the festival for many years. We recognize that some shows take extra effort to attend, whether a gondola ride or free shuttle to a venue. We want you to be guaranteed access for this effort.
Can I make reservations at the Dickson Production on-site desk? No. This is a new process limited to the app, allowing for more enjoyment of your vacation.
Why can’t I get up early, stand in a line starting around 6 a.m., to get paper tickets to attend these shows?
First, we appreciate MusicFesters that endured this process for many years. You truly earned your free tickets, but technology has allowed you to save time. Still know, there’s no perfect solution and we appreciate your understanding when reservations are all claimed.
What if I made reservations for other people, but they don’t arrive at the show with me?
You must wait outside the doors or gondola until your entire reservations party arrives. If they are not there 15 minutes after doors/gondola open, the reservations will not be honored, and you risk not getting access to the show.

NEWCOMERS and longtime
MusicFest fans are in for a treat when they pull in to Steamboat Springs this January. Every year the festival ups the ante and experience for fans, and 2022 marks the debut of The MusicFest Village at Steamboat Square, a brand new open-air gathering space featuring ice bars, food trailers, fire pits, merchandise, product sampling, hangout spots, and of course— live music. It will also be the site of the washer and cornhole tournaments, plus chicken drop bingo, which will raise funds for the local 4-H club. Steamboat Square replaces what used to be a four-story building at the base of the mountain serving as the lower gondola building. The demolition makes way for a larger 3-year renovation plan of the slopes. The newly created big open area will serve as the heart of the festival, where people can meet up to plan the day, regather, relax, and gear up for what the rest of the day has to offer.

This venue is actually an homage to a famed spot established more than 50 years ago at Hoffer’s Drive-In in Hallettsville, Texas, where locals used to gather after a long day, unwind with a few drinks, and spin the yarn. Though the original Dung Beetle Saloon in Texas is long gone, the venue made like its namesake and traveled quite the distance—with some help from Dickson Productions and The MusicFest. The venue’s offering ranges from intimate performances by some of the biggest names at the Fest to a warm and welcoming open mic set hosted by Texas Music Pickers and Real Life, Real Music. It is, at its core, the essence of what The MusicFest is all about.

When festival founder John Dickson first traveled to different ski areas in the ’80s looking for the perfect spot for his novel idea, “Buddy’s Run” was just a cozy little bar resting at the foot of Mount Werner. The spot served as one of two venues during the original MusicFest. Eventually Buddy’s Run changed to Bear River—the name by which most previous patrons will probably recognize this legendary spot that has hosted some of America’s greatest songwriters and newcomers alike. After a multimilliondollar renovation effort from Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, Bear River becomes Timber and Torch, featuring an all-new interior and a lot more space. A venue by any other name would sound just as sweet.

F THERE WAS EVER a ques-
tion about what mattered most to Jerry Jeff Walker, his son, Django Walker, puts that to rest: “The only thing my dad cared about—well, mostly the only thing—was music.” And after a 53-year career that took him from the legendary folk scene of 1960s Greenwich Village to leading Austin’s outlaw renaissance, Jerry Jeff Walker, who passed away in October 2020, left behind a catalog of nearly 40 albums and countless songs. But the thing about a songwriter like Walker is that no amount of recapping his impressive catalog or talking about his resilient history can do him justice the way listening to his contemporaries can. “Other than Willie, Jerry Jeff is the most important musician to happen to Austin,” Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson noted upon Walker’s passing. Other cultural icons from Texas and beyond recount Walker as the type of man who was at once warmly supportive and surreptitiously intimidating— a man with an entertainer’s spirit and an outlaw’s bravado, fully aware of his import among his peers, and also aware he never really received the commercial recognition reciprocal to the respect he earned. “Maybe that’s what gave him his edge — that chip on his shoulder,” Django Walker says. “Nobody really gave him the praise or accolades he deserved. Now that he’s passed, you see things like, ‘Long Live Jerry Jeff Walker’ shirts, and I’m like, ‘Man that dude was around for a long time.’” But at day’s end, the man best known simply as Jerry Jeff never needed the constant chart validation the modern record industry demands to keep making music. He was simply compelled to. His biggest hit, “Mr. Bojangles,” came in the early years of his career and was covered by legends from Sammy Davis Jr. and Bob Dylan to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Nina Simone and Neil Diamond. And yet some of Walker’s own hits and live staples were covers of his friends’ songs, like Guy Clark’s “L.A. Freeway” and “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother,” and Gary P. Nunn’s “London Homesick Blues.” Jerry Jeff Walker just loved a good song.

“My dad was a stickler about songwriting,” Walker says. “He was working on a new song literally two days before he passed away.” That’s just the spirit of a guy who, even during a three-year battle with throat cancer, continued to write, travel and perform for his diehard fans. Django and Jerry Jeff constantly bounced songs off each other. “I’m not sure how much my opinion mattered to him, because he knew how to write and probably didn’t need little punk Django telling him what’s up,” Walker says with a laugh. “But if my dad thought my song was good, I couldn’t care less what most other people thought. I already hit the barometer I needed.” You’d be hard-pressed to find an artist coming through The MusicFest who wasn’t influenced either directly by Walker or by the artists directly influenced by him. And that’s why there’s simply no better way to pay tribute to a legend like Jerry Jeff Walker than to gather the people who loved him most in one place and enjoy music. “All my dad wanted was to play music,” Walker says, “and for people to continue to play music.” John Dickson, founder of The MusicFest and friend of Jerry Jeff ’s, contacted Django about playing a key role in honoring his father. “I produced Jerry Jeff concerts back in the day, and I got to watch Django grow up—I’ve known him since middle school,” Dickson says. “He first started coming to MusicFest in the early 2000s, and he’s participated in tributes we’ve had honoring Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver. Now he’s going to be there leading his dad’s band—that’s very special.” This year’s tribute holds a special place in Dickson’s heart, too. “It was personal for me just to be able to work with Jerry Jeff, because I grew up listening to his music,” Dickson says. “It’s an honor when you get to work with such a legend.” Django Walker says he’s already been floored by the songs artists are asking to play. “I’ve been blown away by what they’re choosing—songs you wouldn’t necessarily think of,” he says. “It means they’ve gone down the rabbit hole.” And when the entirety of The MusicFest gathers to pay tribute to a legend this year, you can bet somebody will again leave inspired by a Jerry Jeff song. “If this can be an event that inspires a new artist—or even someone more developed in the scene—to write something, that would make him proud,” Django Walker says. “And that’s what brings me joy—that his music is living on.” www.bigskitrip.com

Tips from fans led to the formation of the Sequestered Songwriters Relief Fund, which has since awarded over $30,000 to help musicians in challenging times. Tyler’s own songs (and appearance) have always shown the influence of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The most difficult decision may be which songs make the set list and which are sadly left off.

Interesting how cover songs can be so successful in unifying a crowd. The familiar tunes, especially in the hands of a master like Creager, feels like snuggling under a comfortable blanket near a campfire.

Midnight River Choir’s Another Door MIDNIGHT River Choir will celebrate the
release of their new album, Another Door, at The MusicFest 2022. Their first full-length since 2014’s Fresh Air, it features a slew of guest performers, many of whom join Midnight River Choir during their set. The album was co-produced by MusicFest regular Zac Wilkerson along with producer Adam Odor and George Strait’s production manager, Paul Rodgers. The collaborative effort resulted in a sound that is familiar yet more mature than previous releases. Midnight River Choir frontman Eric Middleton called the album a “grownup version” of the folksy, funky blend of country and rock that the New Braunfels-based quartet is known for.

2021 was a busy year for American Aquarium. In addition to releasing their Daytrotter
Sessions vinyl, the band put out two volumes of ’90s country songs, which they affectionately titled Slappers, Bangers, and Certified Twangers. The band will be showcasing classics like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “Some Girls Do” during a special set at this year’s MusicFest. While the album’s title might invoke a party vibe, the songs hold deeper meaning for American Aquarium frontman BJ Barham. This music is “how we learned how to build melodies,” he says. “It’s how we learned how to tell an in-depth story in less than three minutes.” MusicFest fans will also get a chance to hear material from American Aquarium’s upcoming 10th studio album during their set of original songs and Barham will share an intimate set of acoustic solo tunes.

BEFORE relocating to his native Australia,
Kym Warner will grace the stage at The MusicFest with The Grassmen. The revered mandolinist said he couldn’t think of a better way to say goodbye to the States than spending a few days in the mountains jamming and partying with his friends. Reckless Kelly fiddler Cody Braun will be one of several special guests joining Warner and The Grassmen for a set of bluegrass and classic country standards. Braun has been sitting in with The Grassmen and honing his bluegrass chops in recent months when his tour schedule allows.

Due to Ski Corp supply shortages, RFID wristbands are not being utilized this year as in the past. You will need to provide a government issued photo ID at checkin to receive your MusicFest wristband that will serve as your MusicFest credentials providing exclusive access to all Dickson Productions activities, discounts and concerts. We highly advise taking a picture of this lift number. Wristbands and lift tickets are not for sale. If you lose your lift ticket, provide proof of the 7-digit number to the Steamboat Ski Corp Lift Ticket offices located at the base of the mountain for verification that the number matches and a potential re-issue of a lift ticket may take place. If a wristband is returned broken to Dickson Productions on-site desk it may be replaced to the individual who purchased—a government issued photo ID will be required. This broken wristband replacement is applicable one time. Lost or stolen wristbands will not be replaced. A separate 21-and-up wristband will be placed on your wrist at check-in or at the first show you attend. PLEASE do not remove, as this is your festival 21-and-up ID.

Within two hours of check-in to your unit, the occupants of the unit must complete and return the unit or room condition form, available at lodging check-in desk or room condition form, available at lodging check-in desk or from lodging personnel, to the hotel property or condominium management. Before checking out, it is your responsibility to pay all incidental unit or room charges or any other fees directly to your lodge.

Check out of your room by 10 a.m. or the posted time at your lodging facility. Please be sure to clean the condo, place garbage in trash cans, and run the dishwasher if applicable.
