The Christmas Issue

WELCOME : A

Note from the President

A

nother year is about to be only memories in our mind. As a child and teenager, the years could not move any slower. Now as a mother, the days, weeks, and years pass at lightning speed. It hurts my heart to see how fast my babies are growing up. I know every mother can relate. With anything, I try to look at the positive and keep my head up. It melts my heart to hear the excitement in my babies' voices and to see their eyes light up with the joy of Christmas.

president: Stephanie Oliver business development: Briana Harkness briana@tjmag.com managing editor: Beth Johnson editor@tjmag.com

It's amazing to see how 'in the beginning' God planned this, created this, and knew we would be here. To think that at the end of every calendar year, the Earth would celebrate the birth of His Son and our Savior. Isn't that amazing when you think about it? That while we are going crazy to keep up with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, God planned for us to pause and be still to recognize that Jesus is born. December is filled with everything to keep your mind, body, and heart busy--but before the beginning of time, God intended for us to celebrate the birth of his Son. As you enjoy the Christmas season with your family this year, love on your babies like it's your last December. Teach them and talk about the most important part of December--JESUS.

MERRY CHRISTMAS-

CHRISTMAS Crafting PARTY TIP: It’s always fun to get a little party favor, and what’s more fitting than an ornament at a holiday get together? We made this one by taking a small, inexpensive picture frame and painting the backing then covering it with lace. We tied on a piece of jute to hang it!

C

hristmas is our favorite! Not only do we get to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but let’s just face it…Christmas crafts are the best! We cannot begin to count the number of Christmas crafts, projects and gifts that we create together each year. It’s our little bestie tradition to hang out and make something or find new ways to decorate our homes for the season!

HOME : Life

Hello. I’m Claire, an interior stylist living in Austin, TX with my husband, Parker. I’m the blogger and business owner behind Claire Brody Designs. I specialize in providing unique and one of a kind spaces on an affordable budget.

T

he holidays are upon us, and the thought of decking the halls can be overwhelming. This year I kept it simple with our Christmas decor and stuck to a natural garland and rich color for a cozy and inviting space. For the garland, I started with a faux strand of garland that I used as a base. I attached real pine pieces to the garland

a natural holiday mantel

base that I clipped from a Christmas tree. 1 ][ML ÆWZIT _QZM \W I\\IKP \PM XQVM XQMKM[ on top. I wanted the garland to add a fresh and organic feel to the space. I used this same process to create the natural wreath that I added to the mirror. The color, emerald, was present through the natural garland and area rug, and I also sprinkled in the color, plum, through the throw blanket, pillow and candles.

16 | C h r i s t m a s 2 0 1 5

This gave the space a nice, rich contrast. I also brought in brass through the metallic Christmas trees and table lamp. I kept the gift wrap for the presents very simple – matte black wrapping paper and velvet ribbon. This added to the rich, yet cozy feel for the space. Happy holidays from our home to yours!

COMMUNITY : Inspiring

Woman

blaire craven

Blaire Craven (Booker) was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas, where she learned the skills and values that propelled her into a successful adult life. Now residing in Houston, Blaire works at a law firm, Karczewski|Bradshaw, LLP, and lives with her husband and their dogs. This Lufkin native has had an amazing life, but she has also experienced a great deal of heartache. At a young age, Blaire lost both of her parents. During the holiday season, dealing with loss can be especially painful, but Blaire leans of the love of Christ and her family. Recently, we asked this inspiring woman about her life’s joys and trials, and her hopes for the future.

Q

Tell us a little about your background. What did you love to do as a child?

A: “I am an only child, so my parents and I were always

extremely close. We lived in a tight-knit neighborhood where my best friends were right down the street. We laughed and played our way through childhood. As a kid, I tried just about everything from softball to basketball to soccer. The only two things that really “stuck” were dancing and music. When I was about 14, my dad bought me my guitar and began teaching me the basics. Music was a passion that he and I always shared – he raised me on the “greats” and to

this day I still listen to oldies, classic rock and soul. As a member and officer of the Panther Pride drill team at LHS, I really found my niche and poured myself into that fantastic organization. It taught me discipline, organization and leadership in a way that only a 6:15am practice time can really teach a teenage girl! My high school years were a blast and I would do it all over again if I could. To this day, my three best friends are Lufkin girls. There is nothing quite like lifetime friendships.”

30 | C h r i s t m a s 2 0 1 5

Q

I know you have experienced some loss in your life. Can you tell us about your parents? What impact did they have on your life and your success, and what was it like to experience that loss?

A: “My parents, Lynne and Robert

Booker, were the absolute best parents a girl could ever hope for. My dad was born and raised in East Texas, while my mom was a city girl from Kansas City. Their differences made them strong and balanced and they embodied a loving, Christian, supportive marriage. They were incredible members of this community and served others every day. When I was 17, about to start my senior year as Captain of the Panther Pride, my dad passed away very suddenly from a heart attack while playing golf with my grandfather. It was a total shock to me and my mom. My dad was fit, healthy and full of life. My mom’s strength during those first few days was inspiring. Overnight, she became a single parent of a teenage daughter and lost the love of her life, but her faith and positivity never wavered. The pain of our loss really brought me and my mom closer together and our relationship grew into something that I can’t really explain… we became not only mother and daughter, but best friends and sisters.

Q

When I was a senior in college at the University of Texas, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Like my dad, my mom was fit, healthy and never smoked. It was a crushing blow, but I can honestly tell you that I thought she would be fine. I thought we could beat it together. During her first chemo appointment, my mom shopped in the gift shop, danced to the waiting room music and giggled with her nurses. I just watched in awe of her. She battled her cancer for 9 months before she left this earth and was reunited with my dad. She died during my first semester in law school and I remember the night that she passed feeling pure relief that she was finally free from her pain. She took those 9 months in stride with dignity and bravery. I’ll be honest – watching someone you love so deeply go through that is more heart wrenching than you could ever imagine it being. You don’t know until you go through it. After she passed, I threw myself completely into my studies and didn’t come up for air until my first

round of law school finals were done… and then my first holidays without them came and went. They weren’t fun, but somehow I got through them with my family and amazing friends by my side. I couldn’t have gotten through it without the network of unbelievable friends that my parents and I made here in Lufkin. This town huddled around me and took care of me during my worst days.”

What are some of the positive milestones in your life so far? In what way did your parents influence these moments?

A: “Sadly, some of the very best moments

in my life were spent without my parents (even though I know they saw every one of them). After graduating from college, I began law school in Houston. Those three years of law school were the most demanding of my life – not only because I had just lost my mom, but because I was intellectually challenged in ways I had never been before. Then came the Texas bar exam… and I thought law school was hard? Graduating from law school and passing the bar exam is my greatest professional accomplishment to date, but I could never have done it without the foundation that my parents laid before me. They taught me that there is no substitute for just putting in the long hours. When I would get overwhelmed

and stressed, I clung to my mom’s old practice of making a list and doing the easiest thing first – simply for the feeling of accomplishment that comes with “checking” something off. Their passing gave my goals a new meaning. I was not only doing this for myself, but I did it to honor their legacy. I strive to honor them not only through my accomplishments, but more importantly through my relationships with those that I love. On December 13, 2014 I married the most wonderful man who embodies the love, support and humor that I’ve always hoped for in a partner. Our wedding day was the happiest of my life, even though there was a huge hole without my parents there. Matt and I met by chance and fell

31 | TJ M a g & C o • t j m a g . c o m

in love quickly – similar to my mom and dad’s story. He knew about my parents from the beginning, always asking questions about them and listening to me tell their stories over and over. He stood by my side as I cleaned out my childhood home in preparation to sell it. He’ll never fully understand my pain of losing them, but he understands what I need in the hard moments. When he proposed, he used the diamond from my mom’s engagement ring in a new, custom setting - it is the UW[\ [XMKQIT \PQVO 1 W_V <W UM Q\ [QOVQÅM[ using the foundation of my parents’ amazing marriage and fashioning it into a new marriage, one that Matt and I will form throughout the years.”

Q

The holiday season can often be hard for those who have lost loved ones. How do you cope with this loss? Can you give some advice to others who have experienced similar situations?

A: “I have to be honest. The holidays are bittersweet for me. I

absolutely love this time of year and I love decorating, cooking and celebrating the season with my family and friends. But there is always an emptiness without my mom and dad. How do I cope? I give in to those emotions. Those emotions are what make us human. I let myself remember “mama and “daddy and just cry. My advice to those who have experienced loss for coping with the holidays is to not avoid the photo albums and funny stories out of fear that you’ll break – you won’t. Give into those tears! You know the tears that come

Q

What are your plans for the future?

when you find a funny picture of a loved one who’s passed, cry for about 30 seconds and then somehow end up laughing? Those are cathartic. They are good for you. Surround yourself during the holidays with people who will laugh and cry with you. After you’ve given into that emotion and really felt it, remind yourself how lucky you are to have those memories. Some people live their whole lives without those funny stories and silly pictures. We feel that sadness only because the people we have lost touched our lives so profoundly and deeply.

Q

What are you looking forward to this holiday season?

A: “My future is bright because I have

A: “Relaxation and time with my favorite

amazing people that I get to enjoy the ride with. Matt and I are currently focused on our careers. We spoil our little dachshund, Gus, like he was our own son! people! I am so excited to live in my PJ’s for a few days and just relax with my family and friends. I love to cook, so good food is always an element of our holidays. We will get to spend part of the season in Texas with my family and the other part in South Carolina with Matt’s big family (he has three older sisters!). Back

feed 5,000 I

n December of 2010, Billie Jean Johnson felt God speaking to her heart about feeding his people. It’s such a simple need, food. Having food to eat is something many people take for granted, while others feel the emptiness in their stomachs on a daily basis. In answer to God’s call, Billie Jean Johnson and her husband Jeremy began their first Christmas day “FEED” around the Lufkin area. “We waited for people to come, but few met us on the blistering cold day. Then God sent two ladies that day who ate and allowed us to pray with them... and they stayed to visit. As we talked, they told us about their friends and family who lived in a nearby apartment complex, where they also lived. We loaded meals in our cars and drove over to this apartment complex that looked abandoned. We knocked, and the doors weren’t opening. We later learned that the people inside the apartments didn’t know our intentions, so they were afraid to

open the doors. Think about that for a minute. How many times had they been victimized or judged because of the environment they lived in or what clothes their children wore? Our two new friends saw what was happening and they began to knock with us and tell their neighbors to open the door, because we were there to help. Doors began to open and children were coming to the door with the biggest smiles on their faces. As I tell this, tears fill my eyes. I won’t ever forget that day, or the ones that came after.”

around the city. Last year, approximately 200 people volunteered to deliver food, and all the meals were delivered in less than an hour! This year, they need twice the amount of volunteers to achieve their goal. In addition, they need volunteers to bring individually wrapped, baked cookies to put with each meal and bags of dinner rolls. Several churches around Lufkin have generously donated to the Christmas Eve Feed, but they still need monetary donations to be able to purchase sliced ham for the plates.

Jeremy and Billie Jean Johnson opened the Lufkin Dream Center in 2012 after feeling God’s calling in their hearts to feed the homeless and those struggling with addiction in our community. Each year, the Dream Center hosts a “Christmas Eve Feed,” and it has grown every year. Last year, they fed about 2,200 people in our community. This Christmas Eve, they will give out 5,000 meals, focusing on areas that have high populations in poverty, addiction, abuse, homelessness, and elderly people who are home-bound.

Faith Family Church, located at 7020 S US HWY 59, has offered their facility to plate meals and gather volunteers to deliver meals. Cooked food can be delivered the day before, on December 23, between 9 am - 5:30 pm at Appliance Doctor located 910 N. Timberland Drive or it can be delivered to Faith Family Church on the morning of December 24 between 8:15 am 8:45 am. They will begin plating food at 9:00 am at Faith Family Church located at 7020 S US HWY 59. Volunteers who want to deliver meals need to arrive at 10:30 am. We will be having a general volunteer meeting on December

10 at 6pm at Faith Family Church to discuss details and answer questions about this event. “I’d like to invite everyone to join us this Christmas Eve. I can tell you this, you won’t leave this event without knowing you’ve helped spread God’s Love and Hope to people who desperately need it. Bring your children, your friends, your coworkers, or come by yourself... but don’t miss an opportunity to bless someone who can’t ever repay you. You won’t forget this experience. Matthew 25:31-40” –Billie Jean Johnson

LIFE : Something

Abundant

or a bride of Christ in the current generation, it is both powerful and beautiful to see the whole of Scripture as an epic Love story. One in which a Father King sends His only Son to woo and rescue a wayward Bride--the object of His perfect love.

“In the beginning” was an Eden garden wedding. Then enters an enemy serpent with a tempting deception on his slithering tongue, and willful sin brings certain death. Sorrow, sickness, war, and evil lace the story with poison throughout every generation from Genesis chapter three to you and me... But then the cross. A Savior changed the whole trajectory of hell-bound souls, and a good future culminates fullcircle at the wedding of the Lamb by a glassy sea. Within the Kingdom story at large there is also a uniquely personal narrative. Yours is a holy calling to live out the Love story today, and a charge to believe you somehow affect an already written, ever-after eternity. However, for the bride of Christ in our current generation, it is especially difficult to live and move and have our being QV \PM ZMÆMK\QWV WN I JMI]\a [MMV WVTa I[ QV I UQZZWZ LQUTa and perceived by the world in fragile jars of clay. IPhone, video on demand, social media, whining kids, dirty dishes, and manifold distractions make the divine nature harder to access than your neighbor’s locked Wi-Fi network.

Bridal Chamber Basics “I’m taking her back out into the wilderness where we had our first date, and I’ll court her. I’ll give her bouquets of roses.” Hosea 2:15 (The Message) It is often our eternal Bridegroom’s way to gain the attention of His wayward or distracted bride by leading her into the wilderness. The purpose is not to punish her, but to speak tenderly to her. Do not be afraid. It is the wilderness wanderings of life that ultimately lead to the threshold of intimacy with Jesus (see 1 John 4:18). The day your world fell apart--God never intended you to experience that blow. However, He will use the wilderness threshing season to block every path except the one to Him (Hosea chapter 2). If you currently find yourself in the wilderness, find a Bible and get into it. Ask God for a great, precious and personal promise (2 Peter 1:4). There are over 3000 of God’s promises in Scripture. When you call out to Him, He answers (Jeremiah 33:3).

But there is a portal to the Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven--the ability to meet with the Author of History. God built a most holy place of His presence upon a threshing floor (2 Chron. 3:1). If you experienced a tragedy, loss, or season of crushing, threshing, and sifting in your past, you have a threshing floor upon your heart. It is exactly where God desires to build the place of His glory in you. For the bride price of His sinless life upon your cross, Jesus Messiah will purchase your threshing floor, and prepare a bridal chamber for you to meet with Him intimately through the Holy Spirit. It gives a bride unparalleled power from heaven for her every day (Romans 8:11, John 14:12).

YOU Bridal Chamber Belief

Bridal Chamber Behavior

“You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.” (Luke 1:45)

“...but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.” (Luke 2:19)

You have every promise written in Holy Scripture to provide all you need for life and godliness (2 Corinthians 1:20, 2 Peter 1:3). Here’s the kicker: According to our faith it will be done (Matthew 9:29). Will you believe? In a spiritually intimate, bridal chamber relationship with Christ, the belief of the bride makes every difference in becoming pregnant with God’s purpose or aborting the plans He wants to birth in you.

Belief in a great and precious promise is prerequisite, but bridal chamber faith must go beyond what you believe, and become a dynamic part of how you behave. Your bridal chamber exchanges with Christ must initiate bridal chamber influenced behavior as you step out the chamber door.

Look at mother Mary. She has much to teach about being pregnant with a promise.

While there is plenty of wonder and heartache and bustle this time of year, above it all I pray you hear, “Open to me, my treasure, my darling, my dove, my perfect one...(Songs 5:4)” Emmanuel “God with us” is the most perfect gift of all. Blessed are you because you believe.

The angel Gabriel stepped out of heaven onto the dirt of Earth at Mary’s house. “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High, “(Luke 1:31-32a). Amidst a miraculous encounter with an actual member of God’s angel army, Mary questioned. “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” Notice she did not doubt the promise. She questioned the “how.” I can relate. When I read a great and precious promise in God’s Word, I don’t doubt the truth of it. I question the “how” in my circumstance. “But how can this happen? I am a hot mess.” “But how can this be for me?” “But how can this work? It’s impossible because....” I bet you can relate, too. Fill in the blank for yourself, “But how can _____________ happen? I am _____________ .” In a mic drop moment, the angel’s departing words convinced Mary. “...For nothing is impossible with God.” Her response? Belief out loud. “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true (Luke 1:38).” Mary left her daughters in this generation no excuse for unbelief in God’s ability to work the impossible. She sings, “He shows his mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him (Luke 1:50).” He has a plan to birth something in you, too. It will be possible only through the Holy Spirit upon you and the power of the Most High overshadowing you. Believe that.

LIFE : Stretch

Aahhhhh Christmas…

B

eautiful, glorious, family dysfunction gathered in small enclosed spaces.

I hate Champagne. I fall over in heels.

Or maybe that’s just us. And then, after all the hoopla and lights and songs and $14,000 spent on Scotch tape and watching Al Roker light that big tree, comes the holiday I most despise.

My head is too big for those stupid hats that say ‘Happy New Year’ in glitter, and so I end up popping that tiny little string and then crying for 20 minutes. I don’t dance (I mean, have you seen me dance? Have you ever seen a really sweaty schizophrenic? Same thing.)

New. Years. Eve. It’s the oddest thing to me. Never, at any other time during the year do The Attorney General and I look at each other and say, “So….do we go on to bed? Do we stay up?” The other 364 days of the year if we want to go to bed - WE GO TO BED. But then, out of nowhere, comes this weird, random day where you are suddenly old if you turn in at a certain hour. What do you mean you don’t dress up and dance awkwardly, Melissa? What do you mean you don’t kiss each other at midnight, Melissa? Where did this day come from? Who thought of it? No, I’m not kissing my husband at midnight! The man started snoring at 9:15pm. He’s been asleep for almost three hours. Besides, I’m super cozy in this bed and lord knows this Candy is not going to Crush itself. So see? I’m up. I’m doin’ stuff. I can no longer stress myself out with where the coolest parties will be and who will be attending and what they will be wearing. I can’t waste another minute of my life pretending to have fun after 10:00pm.

I just can’t do it anymore. So I don’t. I surrender myself to the fact that New Year’s Eve is for people who are under 26, wanting to propose to someone or from an Eastern European country. And there’s just no in between. I don’t even look longingly at photos the next day on Facebook. Never once have I said, “Man, I wish I could have been at that party.” What I have said is, “Girl, look at yourself. You could use a hot conditioner and about four more hours of REM sleep.” But hey, to each his own. If you want to party like there’s no tomorrow (Shout out! Y2K!) then have at it. I’ll be warm in my bed sending you Candy Crush requests that you can’t get rid of. I’ll also be gearing up for January 1st. The first day of the year. A day to start again? I guess. A day for a clean slate? Sure, whatever. A day to make resolutions and plans and promises you’ll never keep? Yep. But it’s also……………………….and here’s where I get really excited…………………a day for this.

Hot & Cheesy Black Eyed Pea Dip 1 (16-ounce) can black-eyed peas, drained, rinsed 1 (14-ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained, chopped 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 envelope buttermilk ranch salad dressing mix 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Spoon into a baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

So, my lovelies don’t say I never did anything for you. Enjoy this recipe on New Year’s Day and then email me and tell me if you liked it. (Unless you didn’t, in which case, leave me alone.) And face the New Year with class, like me. Which means donating $100 to Curves and calling it a day. Love,

aty Turner’s 11th grade Chemistry teacher once told her, “To be a leader, you must also be a follower. You have to listen and learn from the people around you to know what you, as a leader, need to do.” That must have really stuck with Katy, because this young lady is a tremendous leader. Katy is a senior at Hudson High School where she plans to attend either Ohio State or University of Connecticut to major in Business Management and Administration. Currently, she serves as the President of Student Council, President of Key Club, President of the HS Choir, yearbook editor, Hudson HighLights Drill team manager, a part of Trinity Baptist Church’s Youth Group, and Drug Free All Stars. She also represents Texas by serving with Texans Standing Tall’s Youth Leadership Council, a group that aims to make alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs irrelevant in the lives of youth. According to Maria Caldera with the Drug Free Allstars, Katy was one of nineteen chosen to serve in the group from the entire state of Texas. Caldera goes on to say why. “Katy is respectful, tries to excel in everything she does, and is intelligent, trustworthy, and dependable. As of right now, Katy has participated in the most events with the Drug Free All Stars coupled with the highest amount of volunteer hours while only being three months into the program.”

Student Council is about bettering our school, while Key Club is about volunteering and giving our time to the community. Being yearbook editor means I am helping to make something that people will look back at and reminisce on. Being the drill team manager means organizing and helping things run smoothly with the HighLights. I love my youth group, because not only do we love Jesus with all of our hearts, but we love our community as well and we try to give back as much as we can. Drug Free All Stars and YLC are groups that help so many people and places in so many ways. Both of these groups work so hard to provide happier and healthier communities for everyone. I love volunteering and helping people and almost every organization I’m in is about giving back.” Katie shares an important mantra, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” She continues, “I would tell other students to conquer fear. If you want something, go get it. It might require work or asking for help, and it might be uncomfortable or scary, but I believe in you and I know you can do it. Never doubt yourself and always believe that you can accomplish any dreams you have!”

GROWING UP : Expansion

P

ineywoods Community Academy first opened its doors in the school year of 1998-1999. For the first 10 years of the school’s existence, PCA served students from Pre-K through the eighth grade and enrolled 150 to 200 students each year. In 2009, the school added a ninth grade class, planning to add a grade each year. In 2010, the high school was designated an Early College High School through the Texas Education Agency, and the school began a program which would allow students to earn an Associate’s Degree by the time they graduated high school. It is programs and innovative ideas like these that have fostered the growth of the Pineywoods Community Academy. In 2010, the school’s enrollment began to increase by about 100 students per year. In the same year, Dr. Bruce Marchand became the Superintendent, Monica Gunter was named Principal, and Dr. Merilyn Session took on the role of Early College High School Principal. Now, PCA’s student body consists of 971 students. Due to this incredible growth, PCA opened a new, secondary building in August 2015. The new building houses 336 secondary students, the old building houses 635 elementary students, and now there are 118 staff members serving these students. This new building is tailored to the needs of PCA’s secondary students. It has two state-ofthe-art science labs and a customized technology lab. In addition, there are 16 new classrooms, a competition gym with dressing facilities, and a new cafeteria used by the entire school. Several of the PCA’s staff offices are also in the new building. Many people, including the school board, Bruce Marchand, Monica Guntar, Steve Horrocks, and George Fowler, played major roles in the process of the expansion. Their love for the school and dedication to the students of Pineywoods Community Academy truly shows in their hard work \PZW]OPW]\ \PM M`XIV[QWV 1V ZMÆMK\QWV W^MZ \PM M`XIV[QWV WN \PM 8+) [M^MZIT [\I‫ ٺ‬UMUJMZ[ shared what they love about the school to which they have dedicated their time, talents, and careers.

PINEYWOODS “What I love about PCA is that we have the best faculty I’ve ever had an opportunity to work with in my 35 year career. We have folks that work extremely hard, who are dedicated to the school, and who love working with students.” – Bruce Marchand, Superintendent

“I love that PCA is a close knit community of individuals passionate about educating and serving our amazing group of students. I am truly blessed to be a part of this campus. I am excited about the expansion of our campus and look forward to our very bright future!” – JoDee Woodcock, Secondary Assistant Principal

“What I love about Pineywoods is the hard working family atmosphere. Our teachers have a true passion for education and a dedication to the students. We pride ourselves on knowing each student individually and working diligently for that student to be successful. We have grown tremendously in the past five years. I give credit to the teachers for our growth. It is because of what they do in and out of the classroom that is the driving force behind our growing enrollment.” – Monica Gunter, Secondary Principal

COMMUNITY ACADEMY “My favorite thing about PCA is its motto “Ad Vitam PARAMUS” which is a Latin phrase that means “preparing for life”. We also use the word PARAMUS as an acronym for Pineywoods Academy Rigorous Academic Meritorious University Studies. The determination to search for excellence with Angelina College is the key to our past success and future triumphs, and we have appreciated the support of Angelina College administrators in supporting our ECHS program, including past President Dr. Larry Phillips, new president Dr. Michael Simon, and Vice President and Dean of Instruction Dr. Patricia McKenzie. Our goal,

which we are very close to, is to have 100% participation of high school students in the Early College High School Program.” – Merilyn Session, PCA/PARAMUS Early College High School Principal

“My role as the Elementary Principal here at PCA is to ensure that our teachers and staff are equipped with skills and tools necessary to empower our students to be the best that they

can be as 21st Century learners. What I love about PCA is that our parents, teachers, and students work hard every day and are committed to the success of the school. I am beyond excited to experience the opportunity to see PCA expand. I feel that this expansion has been a tremendous blessing to Angelina County because it allows us the opportunity to educate more students within Lufkin and surrounding areas. This is just the beginning for many great things to come at PCA!” – Jennifer Shaw Elementary Principal

GROWING UP : Milestones

Woodland Heights NICU

T

he Woodland Heights NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) opened in December 2013 with only six beds. Recently, they celebrated their 2 year anniversary at Shelton’s place, honoring their staff and celebrating all the precious babies and mothers they have cared for these years. This NICU, an intensive care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants, has had a huge impact on the families of East Texas. While these newborns and their families once had to travel all the way to Houston or Shreveport for care, now they are now able to stay close to home. This helps the families financially and emotionally as they are able to have the support they need without expensive travel. The NICU’s 2nd “birthday” celebration was held on November 1. The NICU invited back the 200+ babies and their families that have been served in the past two years. Staff from the unit, along with Director of Neonatology, Dr. Linda Chase, joined to celebrate with the families. The celebration had kid friendly games and even a beautiful work of art that will be displayed in the NICU. The Woodland Heights NICU has cared for more than 220 babies since its opening. Now they are in the middle of a construction project that will expand the NICU’s ability to help families. They hope to increase their number of beds from 6 to 15 and plan to complete this project by the summer of 2016. (Special thanks to Jennifer Stevens for her contribution to this article)

“As the social worker for NICU, I provide education on resources and make sure the unique needs and concerns of the family are addressed. Most important of all, I provide emotional support to help reduce the stress of having a baby (or two), in the NICU. I enjoy watching the faces and actions of the family members with the infants. It is rewarding to see the baby on day of discharge starting yet another journey with their family and knowing that we have a positive impact on the lives of so many people.” – Cindy Sheard, Social Worker “My favorite thing about my job is being able to help a newborn child and their family in the most critical time of their lives. Giving the infant the treatments and care needed to survive and thrive and giving the parents support and encouragement through this trying time is rewarding beyond compare. Once all the critical care for that child is done, you finally get to the point of being able to hold them and just XZW^QLM \PM \MVLMZ TW^M IVL KIZM \PI\ M^MZa KPQTL VMML[ AW] NMMT [W N]TÅTTML IVL JTM[[ML QV PI^QVO \PM WXXWZ\]VQ\a \W UISM []KP I JQO LQ‫ٺ‬MZMVKM QV such a little person’s life. My favorite thing about my job is making a difference in peoples’ lives, especially the parents. Seeing their baby being admitted in the NICU is a very stressful experience, and as a nurse my job is to help parents and relatives by making that experience less stressful. At the party, I enjoyed seeing our babies’ sweet faces and hearing them laugh and giggle. I liked reconnecting with the parents and hearing story after story of how thankful they are, and what difference we made in their lives while their babies were in the NICU.” – Nobely Balaraman, BSN, RN “My role in the NICU is being the voice for these tiny humans. We, the RN’s, are at the bedside 24/7. We know the cues, cries, and needs of each baby. We are there to comfort them if their parents are unable to and be moral support when the parents can begin to care for them at the bedside in the NICU. My favorite thing about being a NICU nurse is the rewarding feeling I experience after getting to see first-hand the journey of these little fighters. We are there on the babies’ worst days and there when the light at the end of the tunnel finally shines through. Being a NICU nurse has been one of the most fulfilling adventures I’ve ever had. My favorite thing about the NICU reunion was, of course, getting to see all of “OUR” babies! During the time we care for them, we form a bond with the families. Seeing our healthy, happy babies and their now stress-free families would brighten anyone’s day!” – Brittany Ramsey, RN

TRENT ASHBY TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE

I

want to start this column by asking for all of your thoughts and prayers to be with the victims and families affected by the horrible terrorist attack in Paris. The attack was an atrocity, and I pray that those who took part in it will be brought to swift justice. While the world is looking towards ways to recover from and prevent another such attack, here is a quick update from your state capitol.

Syrian Refugees As you may know, there are thousands of refugees from the Middle East that the Obama Administration is trying to relocate to the United States. While I believe that many of these refugees genuinely are in need of help and sanctuary from the terrible lives in their home country, I believe that it is a huge mistake to bring these people into our borders with no real way to vet them first. There have been reports that some of the terrorists involved in the Paris attacks came to France as “refugees.” I believe that at this time it would be extremely unwise to subject our country to that level of risk. Governor Abbott sent a letter to President Obama stating flat out that Texas will not accept any such refugees, and I was proud to sign on to a letter with over 65 other members of the Legislature stating my support for his position.

In God We Trust As you may know, “In God We Trust” has been the national motto of our country since Congress officially adopted it in 1956. “In God We Trust” represents the foundation of the United States, and it’s simple, yet powerful meaning has directed and impacted our many great leaders over the years. The motto dates its American roots to at least 1814, and has been used as a battle cry by our military prior to being printed on our money. However, there have been some recent attempts to curtail the use of this phrase by extremist groups who seek to undermine “In God We Trust” by forcing police departments to remove the phrase from their patrol cars. I am glad to say that this attempt is being met with heavy resistance in Texas, and recently the Attorney General issued an official opinion arguing the phrase can and should be used. Religious liberty is a critically important issue, and I support these efforts to protect the faith our country was built upon. I will always stand for our freedom of religion and for the continued use of our national motto, “In God We Trust."

Standing Against Fee Increases on Agriculture Producers Over the past few weeks, I have heard from numerous constituents and a multitude of agricultural commodity organizations regarding the fee increases being proposed by the Texas Agriculture Commissioner. These proposed fee increases, if implemented, would generate over $21 million for cost recovery programs that the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers. These programs regulate and inspect all forms of agricultural commodity and livestock operations around the state. These programs are also responsible for inspecting gasoline pumps around the state, and ensuring that the gallon of gas you pay for is a full gallon. In many instances, the fee increases being proposed result in significant increases from the current fee amount and will serve as a hardship on our state›s agricultural industry. I have worked closely with a number of my colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives to fight back against this proposal, including sending a letter to Commissioner Miller, signed by approximately half of the members of the House, asking for him to reconsider his proposal. Following the submission of the House›s letter, Lieutenant Governor Patrick and members of the Texas Senate also voiced their opposition, and the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Water and Rural Affairs is holding a hearing on December 8th, 2015 to investigate these fee increases. My hope is the Legislature can work with the Commissioner on a resolution that doesn›t involve raising fees on producers and fuel station owners, as these costs will impact economic growth and ultimately be borne by consumers. I will provide updates in future columns about this issue and will make sure everyone is informed of the final outcome. If you need to contact my office, please know that we are only a phone call away, and we always appreciate your input and are ready for the opportunity to help you navigate state government. Please do not hesitate to contact us at (936) 634-2762 or (512) 463-0508. Our door is always open.

‘Tis the Season

For hunters, this time of year represents a whole other level of meaning beyond the holidays themselves. Hunting season is always a sacred time for us. It’s something we mark on our calendars and count down the days until it’s here. All of this anticipation and preparation is typically focused on increasing our chances of successfully harvesting whatever game we’re after.

H

owever, for many of us, a successful hunt is so much more than filling a tag or limiting out. It’s about the experience, the time shared with family and friends, and the connection with nature. To me, the holidays always seem to underscore this sentiment. My first hunting memories happened during the holidays. We would always spend a week or two around Christmas at my grandparents’ house, and my older brother and grandpa would hunt every day. Occasionally my sister and I would tag along, and those are some of my fondest childhood memories. They would bundle us girls up in so much faded hand-me-down camouflage that we could hardly walk on our own, and more times than not we’d end up cuddled up in a heap on the floor of the blind, fast asleep. We would always manage to catch a glimpse of a deer or \_W JMNWZM VWLLQVO W‫ ٺ‬IVL _M¼L IU][M W]Z[MT^M[ Ja VIUQVO them. That turned out to be a short lived game after being startled back to consciousness by a gun shot. I was much older when I began taking hunting somewhat seriously, or at least began to actually make an effort towards killing something. Those early experiences, though, are what endeared the lifestyle to me and why it’s always been so closely linked to the holidays in my heart. I’m sure many hunters can relate with similar childhood memories. For some, though, there may be a completely different activity or tradition that is associated with the holidays. It may be going for walks in the snow, playing football in the yard after a big meal or collecting leaves and acorns to make decorations. Regardless of the activity, during the holidays we all seem much more aware of the importance of spending time with loved ones. There is no doubt that this affects my hunting strategy and attitude. I take things a little less seriously, care less about taking something home, and try to focus on soaking up the experience.

Wheelin’ Sportsmen hunt hosted by a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in southern Alabama. This was an overwhelmingly rewarding experience for them, and they helped the kids make some priceless memories. Some of our staff also volunteered at an NWTF Jakes event earlier this year. We love to be a part of events and organizations like this and we’re constantly seeking out new opportunities to give back. If you’re never been involved with something like this, make an effort to do so this season. Find an organization where you can donate some venison or take a kid hunting. If you enjoy the outdoors through other activities, find a way to share that with someone close to you or even a stranger that could use a boost of holiday spirit. The holidays give us all a special feeling for one reason or another. That holiday spirit motivates us to slow down and enjoy time with family, to be more generous than we are the rest of the year, and to care a little deeper about those around us. We should apply that same spirit to our hunting, or whatever winter activity you love most. It will make this season all the more special, this year and every year to come.

Another holiday sentiment that seeps into my hunting attitude is giving back. As a group, hunters are some of the most gratuitous and generous people that exist in the world. There are countless hunting-related organizations across the country whose goals are centered on giving back. Whether it’s conservation groups giving back to the land, sharing game with the hungry, or simply sharing our time to hunt with special needs or underprivileged kids, we love finding ways to help others through our passion for the outdoor lifestyle. At Nature’s Eye, giving back is one of our core motivations for the work we do. Last December, some of our pro staffers had the privilege of helping with a

WEIGHTLIFTING The Snatch

T

he snatch is the first of two lifts contested in the sport of weightlifting. It consists of the lifter taking the barbell from the floor into an overhead position in one fluid motion. As simple as this task may seem, the snatch is one of the most highly technical movements in sports. It is the ultimate movement of power and finesse. When executed correctly, an experienced lifter can make even a heavy load appear light. The benefits of training the snatch over more traditional training are incredible. It develops overall athleticism that will translate into all sports and functional movements. The lifter learns how to apply large amounts of force and rapidly activate more muscle fibers. Not only does the snatch develop an array of muscles from the core to extremities, it also trains the neuromuscular pieces of coordination, accuracy, agility, and balance. These are things that could be missing from a body building type of training.

To execute a snatch, the lifter will start with a wide overhand grip on the bar and lower the hips while maintaining a straight back. The first pull is initiated by the legs, extending the knees and applying force into the ground. The torso will then raise the bar past the knees while the hips begin extending, arms remain straight at this point, and the bar will come into the hip crease. The lifter will then explode upward into the second pull, propelling the bar upward and keeping it very close to their body. For the third and final pull, the lifter will now bring their elbows high, pulling themselves under the barbell and quickly reversing the force, pressing upward into the load. The extreme challenge of the Snatch makes it fun, and the technical difficulty will keep lifters coming back for more.

uke Tarbutton is the Owner, Operator and Instructor at Perfect Shoot in Lufkin. He has been shooting since he was 4 years old. When his father got him a 10-22, he was hooked. Now, Luke shares his love for the outdoors and shooting with his 2 beautiful daughters. Straight out of high school, Tarbutton enlisted into the Army and served for 5 years with the 25th Infantry Division in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq. After his service, he worked for Able Ammo and learned the business side of guns. He is a certified range safety officer and instructor through the NRA. He says, “I love to shoot, and I love to teach people how to hone their skills.” Not only does he teach NRA courses, but also tactical, home defense, and long range shooting courses. He shares, “I want everyone who comes through my course to leave with a better understanding of the science of shooting and a greater confidence with their own firearms. We are approaching the time of year when buck fever is running wild and duck hunters are getting crazed. Tarbutton wants you to remember everything you know about safety.

Knowing that many hunters hunt on local property, remember hunter orange saves lives. Check your shooting lanes and know your target and what is beyond that. Above all else, check your safeties. If you’re hunting ducks, don’t load up until you are in your blind or set with your decoys out. To all of you sky busters out there, please keep at least 200 yards between spreads. Remember it doesn’t make you weak to ask questions. If you have any questions about your particular firearm, ask your dealer. If they don’t know, give Luke a call and he will be glad to help. SAFTEY is the number one thing to remember as you are out there either in your stand or on the water. Luke reminds us that he second most important thing is to have fun. He shares, “This is an historical tradition we are a part of. Every time we wake up early to that cold weather and warm coffee and load up and provide meat for our families, we are on the same level as those men and women who built this country. As you stand in that freezing water in your waders or sit up in that tree waiting for that buck, remember the men and women who came before you. This is America and the American dream; have fun with it.”

TOYS FOR TOTS ast Texas is a unique community in many ways. One in particular is the giving nature and giving hearts of the residents. If there is a need, the community steps in to find a way to fill it.

This year the Toys for Tots program has partnered with TriLakes Tackle and others in the community to host what hopes to become an annual fishing tournament fundraiser. Tournament fishing is a huge draw for our area. TriLakes Tackle owner Hunter Johnson came up with the idea and together with the Lufkin Detachment Marine Corps League, they are making this happen.. According to Brian Crews, "This will be the first fishingg tournament in Angelina County to benefit Toys forr Tots. This event shows the support and compassion n from the citizens in Angelina County and surroundingg areas for the less fortunate. We are looking for a largee turn out since there are so many active fisherman in n the area who are competitive fishermen." All you havee to do to enter the tournament is bring a new toy for a boy or girl. It's a very small price to enter a tournamentt with a large payout for the winners. Since the Lufkin Marine Corps League took over Toyss for Tots in Angelina and Trinity counties, it has grown.. Our children often bear the burdens of society, so thee Toys for Tots campaign seeks to assure less fortunatee children they are loved and someone cares for them.
