Be careful with those online bingos. Across the state of Texas we have seen an increase on online bingos, loterias, and games of chance being facilitated on social media platforms. Did you know that Texas gives out half a billion dollars statewide to charities every year? Much like everything else in 2020, the bingo industry got hit incredibly hard and that meant that charities went without donations for quite some time due to local and state regulations in slowing down the spread of coronavirus. When people were at home, online games began being played. “So people started looking for alternative things and one of those alternative things is that we found is online Facebook games,” says Tom Stewart, Executive Director, Texas Charity Advocates. “You start into that whatever for it may be, particularly from illegal competition that puts a squeeze on those local charities, and it diminishes the value that they can have and provide in local communities all across Texas,” says Stewart. The Charitable BIngo Operations Division is reviewing cases that pertain to online bingo. The commission also says the law does not allow for bingo to be conducted online and unlicensed bingo is considered a felony. Bingo officials are saying there is now an effort statewide by lobbying groups to reach out to Facebook & the Texas Lottery Commission to try and get a handle on the illegal problem.

Well that’s one way to try to catch B I GFOOT Usually state legislative seasons bring out some rather interesting legislative decisions from state elected officials and of course 2021 wouldn’t be any different. Oklahoma State Representative Justin Humphrey has decided to tackle the infamous boogieman of Bigfoot this legislative season. You know Bigfoot, the ape-like creature that has been sought after for decades.

Representative Humphrey’s district includes the densely forested Ouachita Mountains (in Southeast Oklahoma) that hosts a Bigfoot festival every year. He’s hoping that through this, issuing a state hunting license and tag that could help boost tourism, an industry that was hit terribly hard in 2020 worldwide. He’s hoping that by establishing this as an actual hunting season, people who want to hunt Bigfoot will be drawn to the region that borders Arkansas. The bill would only allow for the trapping of Bigfoot and hopes to secure a $25,000.00 bounty.

The spokesman for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Micah Holmes, oversees hunting in Oklahoma and told TV station KOCO that the agency only science-driven research and does not recognize Bigfoot as registered wildlife.

for the changing of the weather. We have a new feature to bring you once a month. Golden Bingo Family opened up a new corporate headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Within those four walls you’ll find our friendly little mascot, Maxine.

Please welcome Maxine to the Golden Bingo Family. You’ll start to find her throughout the pages of The Bingo Nugget and on social media.

What a month, what a month! Hello there Golden Bingo Family! We are jumping into Spring 2021 and we are so excited to have unveiled our newest project - Bingoland. We are excited to bring more bingo to Corpus and to be able to help out more charities in Nueces County.

We are expanding out more GBF T-shirt days when, depending on the hall, you can get discounts or extra benefits for showing your GBF support. Don’t have a GBF shirt? Contact the manager at any Golden Bingo Family Hall to ask about how to get yours today.

While Spring Break is about to come upon us, please remember that our halls do allow for children over the age of 5 to attend bingo, but they MUST be playing bingo. Make bingo a safe, family tradition this Spring Break.

AIR FRYER STEAK BITES PREP TIME 10 Mins

ingredients For the Steak Bites •

16 oz Top Sirloin Filet*, cut into bite size pieces

•

1/2 Tbsp (8g) Olive Oil

•

1/2 Tbsp (6g) Brown Sugar

•

1 tsp Kosher Salt

•

1 tsp Black Pepper

•

1 tsp Chili Powder

•

1/4 tsp Garlic Powder

•

1/4 tsp Onion Powder

For the Garlic Butter •

1 1/2 Tbsp (21g) Butter

•

1/4 tsp Garlic Powder

•

1/4 Red Pepper Flakes

•

1/4 tsp Parsley Flakes

instructions 1. Toss the steak pieces with the olive oil. Mix the brown sugar and spices together and coat the steak in the seasoning. Set aside.

2. Preheat an air fryer for 5 minutes at 400ºF. Once heated, add the steak to the basket and air fry for 4-6 minutes at 400ºF to your desired doneness.

3. While the steak cooks, melt the butter and mix in the garlic powder, red pepper, and parsley. Toss the finished steak in the garlic butter before serving.

MODERN MOM

Who is busier then moms? Nutrition is important, but many of us - me included - do not make the best choices when it comes to giving thought to what we put in our bodies when we are rushing through our day. The most common reasons why both men and women don’t eat healthy are preparation time and willpower. Quick and easy is generally what we go towards in our gogo-go lifestyles. It is easier to grab a granola bar as we walk out the door, than start cutting up an apple. But, did you know that not all granola bars are created equal?

So, what can we do to make sure we fuel our bodies a little bit better, and it not be too complicated?

Plan (At Least Some) Meals.

Life is easier if you know, even a little bit planned out, what you’re making for dinner. Help yourself and take 5-10 minutes on the weekend to jot down some ideas of what your family might like to eat.

This is especially useful if you have social plans, like a date with your best friend at a bingo hall. You can pick-up beef broth you need if you plan to make stew. You are more likely to defrost meat you have been keeping in the freezer if you know that you’re eating tacos for dinner. Turn on the crockpot in the morning so your evening runs smoother!

Always Have Eggs.

Eggs are a great source of protein and are very quick to make. Seriously, whipping up some scrambled eggs is much faster than cooking pasta or ordering (and then waiting for!) pizza. There is nothing wrong with eating “breakfast” for dinner, it’s a warm and healthy meal that’s done in a matter of minutes.

Steam some frozen veggies in the microwave and pat yourself on the back!

Cook Once, Eat Twice.

Over cook. If you can, always over cook. What does over cook mean? No not burning your food or making it mushy, but batch cooking to where you make double the amount of food so you can save for a meal the next day. Throwing some vegetables in the oven? Great, cut up more. Making a stew in the slow cooker? Wonderful, make way too much.

Now, this may be a hard thing to do if you are feeding a large family. Obviously, the more people you have, the fewer the leftovers. But, see if you can do something to help yourself. Can you fit another pan of roasted vegetables on the lower rack?

Pack You Lunch The Night Before.

Now, speaking of that dinner that makes two meals… Well done, you! Let’s use that now. Pack your leftovers in a lunch sized portion for all family members the night before. This will not only save you money (no need to buy Whataburger tomorrow during the lunch break), but whatever you made is probably much better for you than any kind of meal you would normally pick up at lunch.

If You Are Trying to Lose Weight, Look at the Caloric Density of Foods.

Both grapes and raisins are a pretty healthy snack, but raisins pack a lot of calories and sugar in a really small package! That’s a great boost of energy for kids, but if you are an adult, especially if you are trying to drop a couple of pounds, not the best choice. Buy yourself some grapes and keep a bowl of washed (and dried) grapes in the fridge. When you feel hungry, go grab those. Reach for a bag of mini carrots instead of almonds!

Pick Your Snacks Before You’re Hungry & Keep a Snack in the Car. You know how they say one should not go to the store hungry? Well, that’s totally true. Sit down and look at what you normally grab for a snack. Don’t eliminate it entirely if you decide it’s not as healthy as you would like it to be. Look for a way to improve it. For example, if you like granola bars, maybe buy a more healthy kind, like a Lara bar. Being hungry and in a hurry is bad enough when you are at home, but it is even worse if you are out of the house! Many fast food options are available, but few are healthy and even if they do have a healthy option… well let’s just say nobody goes to McDonald’s for salads, don’t they? Help yourself by planning ahead and keeping a snack in the car.

Be Mindful of Your Eating.

You feel like eating that hamburger with fries, don’t you? Realize what your body wants, give it what it is asking for and see how you feel. Once we start listening to our body and taking note of how certain foods affect us, we usually realize that what we need and what we want are not the same things. And once we realize that, it is easy to decide to pick what we actually need more often than what we want. Maybe you have a friend that will share a portion of french fries from the snack bar with you, and then you can also add a salad to that order. Win-win!

MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

National Nutrition Month® is an annual nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

It’s celebrated every year during the month of March, and it focuses on promoting informed food choices, and developing sound eating and physical activity habits!

Risk factors for many chronic diseases can begin early in life. But evidence shows that making dietary and lifestyle changes may prevent disease progression and premature death.

The combination of physical activity and nutrition can help reduce the rates of chronic disease and death. Poor diet and physical inactivity are major contributors to disabilities related to diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and stroke.

Physical inactivity poses almost as much risk for heart disease as cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

Instead of limiting yourself or restricting your diet, focus on filling it with vegetables, fruits,

whole grains, healthy fats, and lean protein foods.

•

Some things to remember: focus on variety, amount, and nutrition; choose food/ beverages with less saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars; start with small changes to build healthier eating styles.

THINK YOURSELF TO HEALTH

Sitting in silence can lead to health. Sounds a bit crazy, right? The idea of meditating can sound a bit easy at first, just sitting in silence for 5-10 minutes, but it’s a lot easier to say than to do for many. The idea of meditating can be a bit daunting but now is the perfect time to make a “practice” out of it. Just like eating a well balanced diet and exercise, exercising your mental system through slowing down is just as vital. We’re not here to throw another task your way but even research has shown that cutting through the mental mess and focusing for just a few breaths can help decrease stress and anxiety, slow aging, and improves your attention span. What? By breathing? Yes, and it can also act as a sleep aid. Are you sold yet?

Meditation isn’t about getting rid of your thoughts or feelings, but it’s about slowing down the process and being able to look at them from a different view. It’s about developing a relationship with our thoughts. Think about your mind like a highway. The things you read, the websites you go through or social media that you frequent, your mind becomes fixed on it. Now a year into a pandemic, you’re probably beginning to think what if life doesn’t return to normal? Meditation is a great tool to get you to see what is happening right now in the present rather than waiting for the future or thinking about the past. Difficult things will arise and when they do, you’ll have the tools to figure out how to add them to your life as it currently sits. Mindfulness even gives you the tools to assist with nutrition. Rather than eat food quickly, to actually take the time to eat the food that was prepared and truly honor the work of the person that prepared it (honor yourself!).

We’ve been coming here for sushi since 2011...we’ve gone to other places here and there, but always compare them to Goro, and for us, nothing else compares! I can get my favorite roll, even though it’s not on the menu anymore, and the service is always top-notch! The quarantine life hasn’t changed our cravings for sushi, so we’ve been supporting our favorite sushi place. Thanks, Goro, for making this time a little easier to handle!

We decided for take out sushi. We called the order in to a very pleasant person working the phones. We even had some special requests , that was handled perfectly . We gave our name and description of vehicle we would pick up the order in. Curbside pick up was fast and very efficient. Sushi was fresh and excellent. I miss going in and having the sushi made to order. But this was awesome , and was a great fix for my sushi craving. Again, this staff and owners never disappoint!

I’m here visiting Corpus Christi and have tried several restaurants in the area. I wouldn’t call this place a foodie town per se, as there haven’t been any restaurants yet that have blown me away. Aka sushi downtown however is a fantastic spot. It has a great ambience and it’s apparent the owner is highly prideful and invested in his business. I ordered the miso soup, spicy salmon roll, fried rice, and 3 different sashimis: fatty tuna, salmon, and red snapper. All were delicious and the presentation was on point.

Perfect spot for any occasion. Highly recommend! 5 stars.
