2021 is going to be the “Year of Gaming” According to the financial analyst, once people are vaccinated and the economy is back to normal, travel resumes and people will start gambling in person again. He is estimating that the casinos will have a huge year in 2021. The Mad Money host has stated that while the numbers were horrible in 2020, they’ll be up against some very easy comparisons once we get closer to a full vaccination population. Las Vegas Sands, the Las Vegas based casino operator lost over 75% of business the first nine months of 2020 but the properties are beginning to see a bright light as countries re going through safety protocols and vaccinations. Let’s get ready to see Lady Luck in 2021!

Pet parrot saves owner from house fire in Australia What a way to earn your crackers! A parrot in Australia helped their family survive an early morning house fire. The owner, Anton Nguyen, did not hear the smoke detector but heard Eric the parrot instead. He began to yell loudly and his owner smelled a bit of smoke. Once grabbing the lifesaving parrot, Mr. Nguyen opened the door and looked back at his house filled with flames. The house may not have survived but Eric & Anton are safe and together.

DO MORE IN HOTTEST RESOLUTION OF 2021 THAT CAN TACKLE ALL OF YOUR RESOLUTIONS “Time is of the essence.” Yes, every resolution you have made or want to make (it’s ok to start on February 1st… January 15th… whenever) revolves around time management. If there’s one thing that 2020 has taught you it was some things just weren’t worth your time. You were suddenly forced to reevaluate what you wanted to reintroduce back into your life and what you wanted to leave behind. As you look into 2021, the idea of adding something may seem exciting but it could scare you a bit because with every new thing there is usually a learning curve to figure that new goal out. That is why managing your time is important and why you may actually want to resolve to do even less than you originally had planned to accomplish more.

LET’S DO LESS Here is the time to take a good look at what you’re truly spending your time on and see what you can eliminate or reduce in your schedule. Here are some frequent “time suckers”. - Tasks that can be assigned out. Look, sometimes you just don’t want to wash the dishes. Maybe you have that thing at work that you have to do every day that you just don’t want to look at. I promise you there is someone that loves doing that thing. It’s ok to hand it over, even if they don’t do it the way you would. Give the dishes to a child, children love playing in soap and it will teach them responsibility. - Quit. Just quit a committee, club, or leadership position that you said “yes” to. Remember that to every “yes” is a “no” to a world of opportunities that you once had the ability to look at. It’s ok to walk away, do it with gusto because you know that there is so much more out there. - Maybe you need to hide all social media. Social media has done wonders for us. We can see family pictures, especially in times of social distancing. Keep up with friends. Get the word out for an event. However, it can easily be the thing that you get sucked down into the zone of wasted time. For many, it helps to not have these applications installed on their phones so they can only check it on a computer. Another option is to hide them away in another folder or put a time limit on them. Police yourself, it’s ok. 10

THE BINGO NUGGET // JANUARY 2021

HOW DO YOU DO MORE WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME AS OPRAH? - Follow the 80/20 rule. Look at your schedule or to-do list. Make sure you look at this every day and write down the five most important tasks that you need to get to. By nature, you will probably get to only four of those and be ok with this. You’ll be able to gradually move from five to six and so on. - Determine what kind of calendar you want to use and stick with it. Learning a new scheduling technique takes time. In a world with so many beautiful journals, agendas, digital calendars, figure out what works best for you and stick with it. Set timers. Schedule meetings, appointments, reminder and create time blocks - More about time blocking… This is what works for me – set aside days or chunks of hours that you will focus on a specific project or task. Make it either in your digital calendar or in your paper one. I am a very visual person and I need color codes for various activities. I prefer to chunk my days by 1-hour blocks and go completely focused in, almost like blinders on. This helps keep me accountable.

MODERN MOM

PARENTItNionGs

We all crave those close moments with our children that make our hearts melt. Connection

resolu

is as essential to us parents as it is to our children. When our

But we’re only human. There are days when all we can do is meet our children’s most basic needs: Feed them, bathe them, keep an encouraging tone, hug them, and get them to sleep at a reasonable hour so we can do it all over again tomorrow. Given that parenting is the toughest job on earth - and we often do it in our spare time, after being separated all day -- the only way to keep a strong bond with our children is to build in daily habits of connection. What kinds of habits?

Connect before transitions

Kids have a hard time transitioning from one thing to another. If you look her in the eye, use her name, and play a bit to get her giggling, you'll fill her cup and make sure she has the inner resources to manage herself through a transition. For instance, mornings go much easier when you start with a five minute snuggle upon awakening to help your child transition from sleep into the executive functions of dressing and teeth brushing.

Play.

Laughter and rough-housing keep you connected with your child by stimulating endorphins and oxytocin in both of you. Making playfulness a daily habit also gives your child a chance to work through the anxieties and upsets that otherwise make him feel disconnected and more likely to act out. And play helps kids want to cooperate.

Turn off technology when you interact with your child. Really. Your child will remember for the rest of his life that he was important enough to his parents that they turned off phones and music to listen to him. This is particularly important in the car, because the lack of eye contact in a car takes the pressure off, so kids (and adults) are more likely to open up and share.

THE BINGO NUGGET // JANUARY 2021

Welcome emotion.

Sure, it's inconvenient. But your child needs to express his emotions or they'll drive his behavior. So accept the meltdowns, don't let the anger trigger you, and welcome the tears and fears that always hide behind the anger. Remember that you're the one he trusts enough to cry with, and breathe your way through it. Afterwards, he'll feel more relaxed, cooperative, and closer to you.

Listen, and Empathize.

Connection starts with listening. Bite your tongue if you need to, except to say "Wow!....I see....Really?...How was that for you?...Tell me more..." The habit of seeing things from your child's perspective will ensure that you treat her with respect and look for win/win solutions. It will help you see the reasons for behavior that would otherwise drive you crazy. And it will help you regulate your own emotions so when your buttons get pushed and you find yourself in "fight or flight," your child doesn't look so much like the enemy.

Slow down and savor the moment.

Share the moment with your child: let him smell the strawberries before you put them in the smoothie. Put your hands in the running water together and share the cool rush of the water. Smell his hair. Listen to his laughter. Look him in the eyes. Connect in the magnificence of the present moment. Which is really the only way we can connect.

relationship is strong, it’s also sweet - so we receive as much as we give. That’s what makes parenting worth all the blood, sweat and tears. Bedtime snuggle and chat.

Set your child's bedtime a wee bit earlier with the assumption that you'll spend some time visiting. Those companionable, safe moments of connection invite whatever your child is currently grappling with to the surface, whether it's something that happened at school, the way you snapped at her this morning, or her worries about tomorrow's field trip. Acknowledge feelings. Reassure your child that you hear her concern, and that together you'll solve it, tomorrow. The next day, be sure to follow up. You'll be amazed how your relationship with your child deepens. And don't give this habit up as your child gets older. Late at night is often the only time teens will open up.

Show up.

Most of us go through life halfpresent. But your child has only about 900 weeks of childhood with you before he leaves your home. He'll be gone before you know it. Try this as a practice: When you're engaged with your child, just be right here, right now. You won't be able to do it all the time. But if you do it every day for a bit, you'll find yourself doing it more and more. Because you'll find it creates those moments with your child that make your heart melt.

POZOLE

Fact: Soup is winter’s answer to salad. And while the super creamy ones that come in a bread bowl taste amazing, they won’t help any healthy eating goals. When you’re trying to stick to a diet but need a nice, warm bowl of broth, this pozole receipe will fill you up! Don’t let the time commitment scare you. It’s as easy as bringing water to a boil and the longer you let it simmer, the better it will be. This soup is meant to be a little spicy, but adjust the heat to your liking by adding more or less of the chile puree. The cabbage will help cool things off a bit!

Cute and cozy little coffee shop with great options for both drinks and pastries. I came during Covid-19 season so it was empty. I got an Iced Vanilla Latte with half their usual milk proportion. The drink was done in less than a minute. I was in and out within 2-3 minutes. Good quality drinks, good service, good atmosphere, and definitely worth a try. Support local businesses! Prices are fair. While I was there they set me up on the rewards program which I could easily see online. Process to order was easy being that it was a drive thru shop. A really great find in RGV. The staff was busy baking and very friendly. I ordered a bacon Gouda baguette and couldn’t believe how much Gouda they put on it - tons! The bread was so fresh. I had the seasonal pumpkin latte and it was made to the perfect hot temperature and tasted great - not at all syrupy or sugary like some tend to be. I watched them making cakes from the bar seating in the back and those also looked delicious. The staff was wearing masks and gloves while preparing food. I recommend stopping here.
