Casinos are chipping in to fight the COVID-19 fight.

Live! Casino Hotel Maryland in Anne Arundel County is now vaccinating eligible residents in the resort’s event center. The casino property offered up the beautiful 75,000 square foot convention center space to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health to administer the 2-dose vaccine. The clinic housed in the Convention Center is capable of dispensing 100 doses per hour.

Also in the mix, Encore at Wynn Las Vegas became a Nevada state-operated COVID-19 vaccination location. The meeting facility that was converted to a clinic is located next to the casino’s large parking garage which ensures the safety and convenience for Nevadans, especially those of high risk like the elderly, to visit the vaccination site. This is truly proving that we will get through this together.

Man Allegedly Hid From Coronavirus And Authorities In Chicago Airport For 3 Months A California man was arrested Saturday and accused of hiding in a restricted area of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport for three months. The man told police that COVID-19 had rendered him too scared to travel home to California, so he hid in the airport, surviving on food provided by strangers, The Associated Press reported.

United Airlines staff spotted 36-year-old Aditya Singh and requested identification.

They said he removed his mask and presented a badge, which belonged to an airport operations manager who reported it missing last October, according to the Chicago Tribune. Singh faces felony charges of criminal trespass in a restricted area of an airport as well as misdemeanor theft charges. Cook County Judge Susana Ortiz set bail at $1,000. She also said if he came up with the money, he would be prohibited from returning to the airport, AP reported.

Healthy Living has some alarming news for people under 50, specifically the ladies out there, when it comes to our heart health but it’s not too late!

I’m Young, What Do You Mean I Have A Heart Condition?

With the onset of Covid-19 ravaging our world in 2020, health care providers began to see an uptick in stress related diseases like anxiety, depression, and hypertension (aka high blood pressure). Along with this came also the onset of obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and high cholesterol – they are all beginning to plague young women.

Don’t worry though, there is a light! Since the 1980s, doctors have become a lot better at treating heart disease. And yes, heart disease is still the #1 killer in the United States, it truly is no longer a death sentence thanks to new technology in medicine, surgical techniques, and a better understanding of what the disease truly triggers.

But why young women? Scientists aren’t for sure but they have some ideas was to exactly why. In 2019 a study was conducted that found that since 1995 not only has hospitalization increased but the diagnosis of hypertension & type 2 diabetes have increased as well. Many of the populations hit hardest, Black women and Latinas.

These two demographics, historically, have been hit with the all around trigger of obesity. It’s no secret that there has been an obesity epidemic in the United States.

So what exactly needs to change? It’s fairly simple – lifestyle changes can decrease the risk for heart disease. You can do this by getting more physically active, eating a more balanced diet, and avoiding both first & secondhand smoke. And you should know that even with these changes or if you’re already doing this, you should still be sure to check in with your doctor.

Young women who have heart attacks are also prone to have depression or posttraumatic stress disorder. They have been shown to have higher levels of stress as well.

Look out for yourselves ladies! Here’s to a healthy 2021.

MODERN MOM

Black history is American history, and it should be taught throughout the year —not confined to a single month. Which is why we have to teach our youth, the next generation about Black history in culturally responsive ways.

February is Black History Month, and while it’s fantastic to see schools and organizations stepping up their educational focus about the African American experience and contributions to our country, I always like to remind people that this learning should be happening year-round. Black history is American history. As teachers do their best to diversify their lesson plans within the parameters of the state learning standards, parents can always help educate children about Black history.

We want our children to have more than a surface knowledge of this important piece of American history, we have to be intentional about supplementing the information that our children are receiving in school. Here are some ways to teach your children about Black History even when you’re swamped: Don’t wait until Black History Month to teach your child Black History.

You know when you keep pushing something off and it becomes more challenging to manage? The same goes for teaching your children Black history. Incorporate Black history education into your children’s life year-round and you won’t have to worry about trying to squeeze everything they need to know into the shortest month of the year.

Learn more about Black History yourself.

The more you know about Black history, the easier it is to teach.

Whether you read autobiographies of African American women or watch documentaries about the contributions Black people have made in this country, make learning about Black history a priority for yourself even as you make it a goal for your children.

Watch movies about Black History and/or the black experience during family movie night.

The next time you sit down with your kids to watch a film, pick one that is representative of the black experience to help you open up conversations about Black history in America. Movies like “The Great Debaters” and “Remember the Titans” are both entertaining and educational.

Think locally.

You don’t have to travel far to give your children Black history experiences. Every single American city has been impacted in some way by African Americans. Find the Black history events, organizations, and celebrations in your city and start participating.

Explore black culture through food.

You have to eat, right? Why not add some traditional African American food to your menu to spark conversations about black history? Of course you can start with soul food, but there are so many different Black cultures in our country with cuisine you can explore, like Cajun, African heritage (such as soups, stews, and so on), and Jamaican. Also find local Black owned restaraunts in your area .

Listen to podcasts and books about Black History while you’re commuting.

My children and I are in the car all the time, so I started downloading books and podcasts for us to listen to on our commute. I pick books and episodes that talk about black history, culture, and the experience as an easy way to educate my kids about all of those things. If you find that you spend a lot of time in your car, use that time wisely to learn more about black history.

Went by at noon to pick up some Crawfish Pies. These are great beyond description. Their etouffee is the best I have eaten and I have eaten etouffee in many places including all over Louisiana. They have everything you would expect to find in a cafe in New Orleans plus individual pies in about every flavor you can think of baked right there. I was disappointed to see business was slow.
