Sometimes You Just Have To Hit Pause In Order To Go Full Throttle.

After experiencing the weirdest eighteen months of our modern existence, we’re “shot girl summer” ready and have our schedules ready to pack. We are saying ‘yes’ to every single event we are invited to, every project that comes our way. You have that new idea that you’ve been wanting to tackle along with your current obligations. Before you know it, you’re staying up late at night, running on fumes, and not wanting to let people down. Sound familiar?

That wall that you hit when you’re overwhelmed is something millions of individuals are feeling at this moment. Sometimes you just truly do need a break. Does this sound like a luxury? Sure. If you’re in a professional space where you can ask your boss for time off, like a sabbatical, ask for it. Last year’s COVID Crisis (and currently the delta variant is taking Texas by storm) taught us incredible lessons, many unexpectedly and challenging. Whether you’re waiting for your job to come back or a new opportunity to surface, these are all lessons that you can take with you.

LESSON #1

There just will never be a perfect time. I’m a mom of two and run the marketing behind Golden Bingo Family along with a tech company. In the last ten years that I’ve been doing both, I’ve had both of my children (many of you have seen them as well!). I’m the queen of overloading my plate and telling myself I can tackle one more project, like telling myself I can dive into real estate along with all of the other things. Burn out happened, I walked away from work for a bit…

LESSON #2

The feeling of dread. It’s inevitable. Your body will be the first to tell you what you’re unwilling to listen to. It can come with an upset stomach. Your brain will get fuzzy, nausea, fatigue, aches, pains, all of the above. You begin to be irritable and difficult to be around.

LESSON #3

Just take the vacation. Like an actual vacation. If you have a work email, set that out of office and forget it. Don’t look back. Don’t check emails. Just walk away. On that vacation, don’t overbook yourself with tourist activities. If going out of town isn’t an option, take a staycation. Just don’t tell anyone you’re going to be in town. Continue to use that out of office on your email and still don’t check your email.

If all else fails, take small breaks throughout your workday. I like to practice the Pomodoro technique, it works well for my ADHD diagnosis, which I will be writing about in October. What is Pomodoro? You work hard for 25 minutes. Truly focused work for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. There are apps around online to help you stay on task but for me I just like to use a timer on my phone.

As for me, I’ll be embarking on a sabbatical for the next month. I'm writing this at the beginning of July and will be coming back hopefully by September 1st, ready to rock and roll.
