A BELOVED TRADITION FINDS ITS RHYTHM When The Banner-Press reported a year ago that the Chappell Hill Historical Society planned to discontinue its annual Scarecrow Festival after more than four decades, the future of Washington County’s favorite autumn tradition seemed uncertain. Facing rising operational costs, logistical hurdles and a shrinking pool of volunteers, officials made the difficult choice to safeguard the organization’s financial health. To many longtime residents and business owners, it felt like the heartbreaking end of an era for a small town whose heartbeat depended so heavily on its vibrant seasonal gatherings. Yet, despite concerns that the cancellation might mark the final chapter of a cherished legacy, Chappell Hill’s fall celebration
never skipped a single year. Stepping up to carry the tradition forward is BirdDog, a Texas-based company focused
on rural land, community stewardship and long-term thinking. Headquartered in historic Chappell Hill, the team at BirdDog took over operations to revive and re-imagine the event, ensuring the town’s 48-year autumn spirit would continue uninterrupted under a bold new title: the 2026 Chappell Hill Scarecrow Music Festival. As the BirdDog team shared on their official festival announcement, the drive to step in was rooted in deep local appreciation. They believed the
gathering was simply too important to lose, not just as an annual event, but as a crucial reason for neighbors, families and travelers to come together around live music, great food, friendly competition and shared community. The goal was never to reinvent what made Chappell Hill special but rather to honor its deep roots, improve the experience where possible and build something sustainable that will last for generations to come. In keeping with the spirit of the original festival, attendees can rest easy knowing that the heart of Chappell Hill remains open to all. Just as it always has been, visitors enjoy completely free access to all vendor areas on Main Street and in the Wine Garden, allowing families and shopping enthusiasts to explore local crafts, artisan goods, food stands and the classic scarecrow displays without needing a paid admission ticket.
THE MUSICAL SIDE
For those looking to experience the brand-new musical production, the festival expands its street-fair atmosphere into a premier multi-stage showcase. Across the weekend of Oct. 10 and 11, the festival will host 10 powerhouse acts, blending legendary Texas country performers with some of the state’s most compelling rising stars. The celebration kicks off Saturday morning in the Wine Garden at 10:30 a.m. with Joey McGee, an acclaimed regional artist with over 100,000 albums sold and eight chart-topping
singles under his belt. He is followed at 12:45 p.m. by Cul De Sac, who bring four studio albums of rich harmonies, folkrock, and southern soul to the stage. By 3 p.m., American Idol golden ticket winner and Texas touring favorite Taylor Graves takes over the Wine Garden with a set of original radio hits. As evening approaches, gates to the Main Stage open at 4 p.m., and the energy shifts at 5 p.m. with The Flinns, a husband-and-wife country Americana duo whose high-energy acoustic set provides the perfect festival opening. At 6:30 p.m., rising Texas country talent Cody Hibbard, fresh off a featured appearance on CBS’s The Road and backed by 125,000 monthly Spotify listeners, delivers his signature authentic songwriting. The night culminates at 8 p.m. with Saturday’s headliner, Texas country icon Roger Creager. Armed with a full band, Creager brings his massive catalog of 13 regional number-one singles, 250,000 albums sold, and legendary stage presence to top off an unforgettable opening day.

Sunday offers an all-day program that begins with a special community gathering: Church on Main Stage. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. at 5315 Main Street for a one-of-a-kind Sunday service in the heart of Chappell Hill before the music begins. The Main Stage roars to life at 11 a.m. with Black Cat Choir, delivering a high-octane performance packed with Texas roots rock. brings his growing Texas fanbase over to the Wine Garden at 1:30 p.m. to blend classic and modern country sounds. The entire festival builds toward its grand finale at 3 p.m. on the Main Stage with Sunday’s headliner, Bri Bagwell. Crowned the Texas Female Artist of the Decade and boasting 13 number-one singles on Texas Radio alongside ACM-winning songwriting credentials, Bagwell closes out the weekend with the full-throated country horsepower that has made her a mainstay across the state.
SCARECROW CONTEST
Central to the town’s seasonal magic is the return of the beloved Scarecrow Contest, putting local creativity front and center. Open to individuals, families, groups and neighborhoods of all ages, with no entry fee required, the contest invites everyone to help dress the town in fall charm. Households can enter multiple submissions, provided each weather-resistant display stands at least three feet tall, remains on private property, and keeps things family-friendly. Installations must be in place on private property by Sept. 25, setting the stage for official judging and community voting between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4. Welcome to the tenth annual Texas Arts and Music Festival, a vibrant, completely free, family-friendly celebration where deep-rooted Texas culture seamlessly blends with world-class creativity. Walk through downtown during festival weekend, and you will witness art coming to life right before your eyes in real time. The festival brings in worldrenowned muralists alongside
top-tier talent from across the Lone Star State to craft massive, larger-than-life street murals live on site. Towering hydraulic lifts and ladders dot the skyline as artists spray, brush and blend
vivid colors across historic walls. From bold pop-art graphics and delicate native bluebonnet scenes to majestic Texas longhorns and historical tributes, these permanent installations turn Brenham into an evolving, year-round outdoor gallery that thrives long after the festival crowds disperse. Beyond the brick-and-mortar installations, the heart of the festival beats within the bustling Art Village. On the third Saturday of each month, the quiet grounds of Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site undergo a remarkable transformation. The modern world slips away, replaced by the sights, sounds, and daily rhythms of Old Washington in 1836, the historic birthplace of the Republic of Texas. For families, history enthusiasts, and curious travelers alike, Living History Saturday offers a rare, hands-on portal into 19th-century frontier life. Instead of staring at glass display cases, visitors interact directly with costumed staff and living history interpreters who bring the stories of early Texas settlers and soldiers to life. The event prioritizes immersive, familyfriendly experiences designed to let you experience history firsthand. Guests can dip a genuine quill pen in ink to sign a souvenir copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Across the grounds, militia soldiers explain frontier defense, military
equipment and the daily struggles faced during the Texas Revolution. Nearby, both children and adults can test their skill at traditional early Texas games that entertained frontier families nearly two centuries ago. Whether bringing young learners for a weekend outing or looking for an immersive dive into Texas heritage, practical planning makes for a smooth trip. The next scheduled event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17, with activities running continuously from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT. ‘CISTERN & SECRETS’ GALA
Step into the shadows of history and prepare for an evening of velvet-draped mystery. The Brenham Heritage Museum has officially announced its Third Annual Fall Fundraising Gala, slated for Saturday, Nov. 7. Titled Cistern & Secrets: A Masked Heritage Gala, this year’s flagship event promises to peel back the layers of Washington County’s past while delivering one of the most glamorous nights on the region's social calendar. Formerly announced under the title “The Order: The Annual Convocation”, the newly reimagined gala retains all its promised decadence, high-caliber entertainment, and lavish décor, all while anchoring itself deep within local lore. Co-chaired by Robert Flanagan and Brad Tegeler, the event draws inspiration from the subterranean structures, architectural character, and lesser-known stories that define Brenham's history. Cistern & Secrets invites patrons to explore the enigmatic side of local heritage
in a setting that blends timeless sophistication with theatrical allure. The four-hour affair, hosted at the historic Ant Street Inn located at 107 West Commerce Street in Brenham, Texas, is designed to be fully immersive. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., attendees will enjoy premium craft cocktails and a curated menu of heavy hors d’oeuvres, set against a backdrop of live musical performances and lively gaming tables. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in both silent and live auctions featuring exclusive items and experiences, all benefiting the museum’s educational and preservation initiatives. Rather than focusing on high-profile public figures, the initiative concentrates on recognizing grassroots individuals whose day-to-day contributions often go unnoticed despite making a lasting, meaningful impact on the region. Honorees selected for the recognition receive a handcrafted stainless-steel dog tag featuring a custom copper star design. Beyond the physical accolade, one primary winner is granted the unique opportunity to direct a $1,000 community donation—fully funded by PlanNorth—to a local nonprofit organization of their choice, helping to further support charitable causes within the county. To ensure the recognition stays true to its mission of celebrating everyday workforce and community members, specific eligibility criteria have been established. Nominees must reside in Washington County, have worked within the region
for a minimum of five years, and consistently demonstrate high integrity in both their professional and personal lives. To keep the award focused strictly on grassroots unsung heroes, candidates cannot be corporate executives, business owners, or past recipients of other community awards. However, solopreneurs remain fully eligible for nomination. Additionally, to maintain fairness and avoid any potential conflict of interest, nominees may not be immediate family members of current or former PlanNorth employees.

Burton, located on U.S. Highway 290 in western Washington County, was originally established in 1862 and named for John M. Burton. The post office opened in 1870 with A. C. Huberich as first postmaster. Incorporated in fall 1872 with Nelson Felder as mayor. The town benefited from the Houston and Texas Central Railway extension from Brenham to Austin. Famous Texas Ranger Leander H. McNelly was buried near Burton in 1877. In the early 1980s, economist Douglas Hutchinson renovated an old cotton gin as a center for cotton ginning information. Texas Cotton Gin Museum & Burton Farmers Gin: Built in 1914, it is the oldest operating cotton gin in America. Located in Fayette County, Round Top was officially established in the late 1840s, named after local “round top” houses. Settled by German immigrants in the 1830s, the German influence remains visible in architecture and culture. St. John’s Episcopal Church served as a hospital during the Civil War. In the late 19th century, the railroad expanded its role in cotton and livestock trading. Bi-annual antique fairs began in the 1970s. Festival Hill (Round Top
Festival Institute), founded in 1971 by The James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts, established Round Top as a major cultural center.

Named either after Native American phrase for “prickly pear” or “muddy waters” referring to the Navasota and Brazos Rivers. Originally named Hollandale after Francis Holland (1822). Renamed Navasota in 1854 by James Nolan. In 1859, Nolan deeded 80 acres to the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. Became a key shipping hub for cattle and cotton. Created the Navasota Industrial Foundation in 1952.
