There have been more changes to our daily lives over the past 20 years than we can begin to count, but there’s one thing that stays the same — owning land, and the ability to build on, live on and thrive on that piece of property, is considered a basic right for Americans.

It’s on that tenant that Colonel Lee Roper built a part of his legacy in the years after his retirement from a stellar, 24-year military career. One of the neighborhoods Roper founded is Rockin’ J Ranch in Blanco, a sprawling tract just south of town that the El Paso businessman developed after he became enamored by the property nearly four decades ago.
Rockin J Ranch is the home of the highly rated Vaaler Creek Golf Club, which has firmly established itself as a must-play in the region and one of the top courses in the state.
The exclusive, gated neighborhood that Roper platted and envisioned has enjoyed robust success as families have moved further away from the crowded population hubs of San Antonio and Austin.
Less than 10 percent of the homesites originally available for purchase in the 1,064-acre community have not been contracted as there are in excess of 650 homes set among the property’s wide series of hills and plateaus, rolling fields of flowers and stands of oak and cedar trees.
“There has scarcely been a time where growth has slowed over the past 15 years,” said Ryan Brubaker, the long-time sales manager at Rockin J’ Ranch. “Demand remains high even with the challenges created by the current economy, and we expect to continue to grow.”
“The property almost sells itself,” Brubaker explained. “People understand the advantages to living where they are remote but not too much so. We are very proud of the community we have built here.”

You can still get a plot of land at Rockin’ J Ranch based on your signature and with as little as 10 percent down for lots from one-quarter acre to one acre
Rockin’ J Ranch, an exclusive gated community, with peerlessVaaler Creek Golf Club as its centerpiece, has made its mark over past two decades
Roper, who turned 97 years of age in November, built the community on a series of handshake agreements and continued to work that way when he started selling the lots and homesites that encompass Rockin’ J Ranch.
in size. The development company offers in-house financing for the community’s lots (and is offering a no-interest loan if buyers make a 50 percent down payment) and will continue to carry the note for up to 20 years with no prepay penalties.

There is no requirement to build on purchased land, with some buyers preferring to hold on to their property as a valued investment. Children in the neighborhood are schooled in the Blanco ISD, which is considered one of the highest-performing districts in the region.
One of the earmarks of Rockin’ J Ranch is its use of a centralized water and sewer system rather than the well water and septic fields used in many other Hill Country developments. That matters because water is a precious resource and so scarce in the region – even more so now than when the neighborhood was originally envisioned.
There is still a ranch presence here, and that was preserved by
incorporating a number of 150-year old homes and landmarks into the community’s clubhouse and throughout the golf course design.
All the streets in the Rockin’ J Ranch are named for Texas Rangers, and the natural land offers habitat to all kinds of wildlife, perfect for great photography and seclusion and a desired quality of life that’s hard to match.
A recent trip to the community showed small herds of deer at play in the open spaces of the scrub brush and mixing with golfers at the manicured

golf club. The golf course is one of the region’s most enjoyable and has been voted among the best public tracks in Texas. All real estate sales include basic membership.

Vaaler Creek Golf Club: if you’ve played it, you know
Opened as a nine-hole track in 2007, Vaaler Creek GC was considered by many golfers early on to be quirky. Expanded to a full 18 holes two years later and allowed to grow up and grow in as the community has taken shape on its

edges, the course has won over players in droves – there is scarcely a day without a full tee sheet.
“We remain one of the most popular places to tee it up in this region of the state, with our play continuing to grow since the post-COVID golf boom,” said Adam Grosch, Vaaler Creek GC’s general manager and head PGA professional. “We take great pride in our rate of return players – it’s always good to see a familiar face with a smile on it.”
“But we also understand the jewel of a course we have here. It gets the amount of play it does for a real reason — Vaaler Creek is just a very good, very fun, very well-maintained golf course that’s hard to beat at the price we charge to play.”
Vaaler Creek GC was named in honor of Jack Vaaler, a war veteran who served with Roper who passed away during the initial construction phase of the golf course.
Vaaler Creek GC was the first signature design by Michael Lowry, who fashioned a muchtougher-than-its-carded 6,874yard, par-72 track among live oak
and cactus. Lowry worked in all sorts of cool features: ponds, sand hazards of various sizes and severity, elevated tee shots and wavy, tree-lined fairways. Both nines offer far-reaching views of the famed surrounding region. The generous homesite setbacks mean that the residences near the course are mostly out of sight and always unobtrusive, adding to the course’s isolated feel. The back nine at Vaaler Creek is a bit more mature and not as severe as the newer outward half.
Given its length, golfers might think they can overpower Vaaler Creek, but finding success here is not that simple. The course has a rich

variety of long and short holes, with shots involving strategically placed bunkers and an occasional carry over water, including on the closing hole’s approach.
The course’s true last line of defense is its lightningquick, mounded and sectioned putting surfaces, which can make aggressive players timid and prone to second-guessing.
Much like the neighborhood surrounding it, Vaaler Creek GC was destined to succeed because of the plan set in motion when it was founded. There has been continual work to improve the course over the past 18 years and the attention to detail at the course and the hospitality and downright Texas-ness from the staff shine through.

allows for full shots out into the range to practice fairway bunker shots.
The putting green itself is 5,000 square feet and has a lot of room around it to hone in chip shots of all varieties.
An enclosed teaching area at the course’s practice facility allows for allweather lessons and game improvement. A refined short-game area will come online this winter at the driving range that includes a green-side bunker and
“The community continues to grow as does our number of rounds from the public and members, so demand is high and tee times need to made well in advance,” said Grosch, who along with Colonel Roper and Brubaker have been at Rockin’ J Ranch and Vaaler Creek since its opening. “The only way to become a

member of our course is to own land or a home inside Rockin’ J Ranch and you won’t find a better deal on membership anywhere in Texas.”
“We host a ton of golf associations and tournament groups of 24 to 144 players all throughout the year. Our tournament calendar for next year is already filling up quickly.”
The community also sports a pool, a pool house, and a clubhouse built with rustic charm,

and there are hiking trails and outdoor activities. There are condos for purchase or rental off the 10th tee of the golf course, a nature park, ponds for canoeing and fishing, and a pavilion near the community pool for after-golf dining, entertaining and special events.
The unique livability of Rockin’ J Ranch helps residents get away from it all while sacrificing nothing as far as amenities and convenience. The community has become a melting pot of residents from across Texas and from coast to coast.

Top 10 Golf Course to play in Texas
“Dallas Morning News” 2025

When most people picture a dude ranch, they imagine horseback rides, dusty corrals, and the wide-open range. They see wranglers in wide-brimmed hats, desert sunsets bleeding pink and orange across the horizon, and perhaps a chuckwagon dinner shared under the stars. But at Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg, Arizona, the Sonoran Desert is the backdrop for something much richer—an experience that expands far beyond the saddle. Here, golf is just as central to the story as cattle drives, cookouts, and cowboy culture.
The resort’s Los Caballeros Golf Club has become a destination in its own right, offering players a championship-caliber course that captures both the beauty and grit of the Wild West.
Opened in 1980, Los Caballeros Golf Club was designed to reflect the traditional feel of golden-age courses while embracing the rugged desert landscape. Stretching across rolling terrain framed by the Bradshaw Mountains and Vulture Peak, its 18 holes provide a blend of challenge and beauty. The fairways weave through desert washes and cactus-studded ridges, creating a course that feels natural to its environment.
Unlike many desert courses that demand laser accuracy just to stay in play, Los Caballeros strikes a balance. It’s playable for golfers of all skill levels, yet it demands focus, rewarding precision over raw power. One of its most memorable moments comes at the 16th hole, a stretch of golf

that perfectly encapsulates the Rancho experience. From the elevated tee, players take in sweeping views of Vulture Mountain and the surrounding desert. As they approach the green, the setting becomes even more unforgetable; the ranch’s herd of horses often passes by, heading out to pasture. It’s a scene that fuses golf with the spirit of the ranch in a way no other course can replicate, leaving players with the feeling that they’ve stepped into a storybook version of the West.
Before tackling the fairways, players can warm up at the club’s practice facility, which includes a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. It’s the kind of

for lessons, tailoring instruction to each individual’s skill set. The result is a course and practice experience that feels both refined and refreshingly connected to its rugged setting.

space that encourages lingering, working through irons on the range as the desert sun climbs higher, or fine-tuning the short game while quail dart across the edges of the practice area. For those seeking improvement, PGA professionals are available
While golf is a highlight, Rancho de los Caballeros is far more than a golf destination. Sprawling across 20,000 acres of high desert, the ranch has been welcoming guests for more than 75 years with its blend of cowboy traditions and modern comforts. Horses remain the heartbeat of the property, and the equestrian program is both expansive and inclusive.
Wranglers pair each guest with the perfect mount, taking into account skill level and personality, ensuring that a first-time rider feels just as comfortable as an experienced horseman. Morning and afternoon rides are a staple of the experience, with trails that wind through the Sonoran Desert.

For those who crave a little competition, team penning puts horsemanship and quick thinking to the test as small groups attempt to maneuver cattle through obstacles and into a pen. Nature rides offer a slower pace, led by naturalists who interpret the desert’s flora, fauna, and history along the way. Twice daily, the ranch also hosts its famous horse run, a spectacle that draws guests out of their casitas at sunrise and again in the late afternoon. Watching 85 horses thunder across the desert against a backdrop of golden light is nothing short of breathtaking—a moment that lingers long after the dust has settled.

Adventure at Rancho de los Caballeros extends well beyond horseback riding. Guests can test their aim with trap and skeet shooting or try archery for a hands-on lesson in focus and patience. For those craving more traditional recreation, the ranch’s tennis and pickleball courts are a popular draw, while yoga sessions held under the desert sky offer a calming counterbalance to days filled with activity.
Families with children find comfort in the fully supervised Kids’ Club, which introduces younger guests to ranch life through horseback riding, roping lessons,
crafts, and movie nights. It’s a place where even the smallest cowboys and cowgirls make memories of their own, freeing parents to relax knowing their children are happily immersed in the spirit of the ranch. After activity-packed days, many guests find themselves drawn to the Spa at Los

Caballeros, a serene desert oasis. The spa is intentionally designed to feel like a retreat, offering massages, facials, body scrubs, and restorative soaks. Treatments often incorporate desert botanicals—sage, prickly pear, and jojoba— grounding guests in their surroundings even during moments of stillness.

An infrared sauna adds another layer of renewal, making the spa an ideal place to reset after hours spent under the Arizona sun.
Dining at Rancho de los Caballeros is just as central to the experience as the golf and horseback rides.
Meals are treated as opportunities to gather, celebrate, and indulge. The Main Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offering a menu that transitions seamlessly between ranch-style comfort food and more refined options such as scallops or mushroom tarts.
For those craving something more elevated, 19 at Rancho de los Caballeros delivers farm-fresh cuisine under the direction of Executive Chef Robert

Its signature Prickly Pear Margarita— crafted from tequila and prickly pear purée sourced from the surrounding desert—has become an unofficial symbol of the property, offering a refreshing toast to a day well spent.

Cornett, complemented by a 2,000-bottle wine cellar that has become a point of pride for the property. The wine program balances classic regions with discoveries from boutique producers, offering guests the chance to sip something unexpected alongside their meal.
The Club Grill, located at the golf course, is a favorite among players. With sweeping views of the course and the Bradshaw Mountains, it’s the perfect place to fuel up before a round or relax after one.
As the sun sets, guests often migrate to the Los Cab Saloon, where live music, casual cocktails, and easy camaraderie define the evening. And for those who prefer the most authentic ranch dining experience of all, the seasonal outdoor cookouts bring guests together under a starlit desert sky with barbecue, music, and boot branding—a memorable way to end a day on the ranch.
What makes Rancho de los Caballeros truly special is the way golf flows seamlessly into the greater ranch experience. A day here might begin with a crisp desert morning round, continue with a horseback ride along cactus-lined trails, and end with a massage, a margarita, or a cook out beneath a canopy of stars. Unlike resorts where golf is simply one option among many, at Rancho it’s woven into the ranch’s rhythm, reminding players that they’re not just golfing in Arizona, but in the heart of the West.To book a stay, please visit ranchodeloscaballeros.com.

In a spectacular night of living Texas golf history, more than two dozen Texas Golf Hall of Fame members gathered in Austin for the annual Gathering of Eagles, honoring one of Texas’ greatest teachers Harvey Penick at his home club Austin Country Club.
The annual fall gathering brought Texas golf’s greatest past and present to celebrate golf’s most historic golfing state, honoring the history and embracing the future.
“Texas is a big state and we have a lot (of players) to look up to here,” said twotime Masters Champion Ben Crenshaw. “Golfers tend to live a long time and we have so many memories here.”
Crenshaw was part of a panel discussion with fellow major golf champion and Ryder Cup captain Tom Kite along with LPGA major winner Sandra Palmer talking about Penick, his decadeslong tenure at Austin Country Club and the impact he had on their life.
“When I walked in the building tonight, it struck me how good it was to be with all these (Texas golf) people and how they touched my life and how Harvey molded us,” Kite said.
Texas has the largest state Golf Hall of Fame in the nation, with permanent locations in San Antonio and Frisco and a mobile museum which rotates around the state at various events.

With hundreds of PGA and LPGA victories among its dozens of inductees, the hall has 102 major golf champions won by its inductees.
“The greatest golf state in the country without a doubt,” said TGHOF chairman Mike Brooker of Houston.
While Crenshaw grew up in Austin, Kite moved here from McKinney at age 12, both meeting Pennick at ACC and both became two of the greatest Lone Star golf tandems in golf history, equaling the exploits of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson in the1940s and ‘50s and Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler of today.

“I remember the first time I met Harvey at ACC and he asked what I wanted do with golf,” Kite said. “I told him I wanted to play on the PGA Tour, Harvey replied let’s work on making the junior high golf team first.”
He never allowed them to work together and watch each other get lessons because Penick taught them differently.
Kite wanted to know everything about the golf swing, “did I ever,” Kite remembered. Crenshaw simply wanted to play and use his natural talents on the course.
“Harvey would tell me, you go and play on the course and I’m going to be on the range working with Tommy,” Crenshaw recalled. “ I’m so glad I had Harvey in my life,”
Thankfully, both got to share their greatest golf triumph with their Texas mentor.
Kite won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links under extremely challenging conditions and brought the huge USGA trophy home to Austin and put it in Penick’s lap.
Crenshaw won his final Masters in 1995 on the week of Penick’s death,

“I really believe I was allowed to win the Masters as a way to honor Harvey through me,” Crenshaw said.
Crenshaw, Kite and Palmer are still active in golf with Kite and Crenshaw still living in Austin serving as an example of one Texas golfing generation helping and inspiring another.
“I wonder if we could still win today in this era.” Palmer asked. “I could still beat both of you right now,” Kite responded to laughter from the sold out crowd.
Tour champion, was one of the number of hall of fame members who was a part of the Lone Star golf history night.
“There is something still special about the players and the land and the game that we love. I may not live here in Texas now, but Texas will never leave me.”

Fort Stockton native Blaine McAllister, a former Texas Open PGA
The Texas Golf Hall of Fame also celebrated 100 years of the University of Texas Golf Champions, with 21 of its members being Longhorns!

The Scott Schreiner Golf Course has been a cornerstone of Kerrville for over a century. It first opened in 1924 as the Kerrville Country Club, a private nine-hole course carved into the rugged beauty of the Texas Hill Country. A decade later, in 1934, the City of Kerrville acquired the property, transforming it into a public municipal course and opening its fairways to the entire community. Over the years, it has seen thoughtful improvements with the most notable being the recent $4 million dollar renovation completed in 2025.
Today, this course stands as a living piece of Kerrville’s history where tradition meets modern golf, and every round is framed by the unmatched beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
The 2025 renovation project brought major upgrades to the greens, bunkers, and infrastructure, creating a more enjoyable and resilient experience for every golfer who tees off. The completely rebuilt greens feature new turf and improved drainage, offering smoother, more consistent play year-round.
Bunkers have been reshaped and re-edged, enhancing both aesthetics and challenge, while new cart paths and a new
fleet of golf carts ensure a smoother ride through the course’s picturesque terrain. Golfers will also notice upgraded facilities, including refreshed restrooms and the addition of a self- contained “Green Flush” unit on the back nine. Small details that make a big difference in comfort and convenience.
Beyond the physical improvements, what stands out most is the care and craftsmanship poured into preserving the course’s timeless character.
Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, Scott Schreiner Golf Course invites you to experience the historic course in a whole new light — refreshed, revitalized, and ready to play.

North Texas has long been a powerhouse for junior golf, and this past summer was no exception. From national championships to prestigious team selections, local golfers, many of whom got their start on the Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour, are making waves on the national and global stage.
This year, three of the five starters on Oklahoma State’s NCAA Men’s Championship team, Ethan Fang, Preston Stout, and Gaven Lane, hail from North Texas. All three rose through the ranks of the Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour, following in the footsteps of stars like Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler.
USA in the 50th Walker Cup Match. They were joined by fellow North Texans Jase Summy of Keller and Tommy Morrison of Dallas. Four of the ten U.S. team members were from North Texas.
“We are seeing the direct impact of Jordan Spieth on golf in North Texas,” said Mark Harrison, CEO of the Northern Texas PGA. “These collegiate stars were inspired by Jordan’s 2015 season and developed their game through our tour. That’s what I call the Jordan Spieth effect.”

Fang, a Plano native, joined the NTPGA at age six and quickly ascended through the 9-hole, 18-hole, and 36-hole tournament levels. Stout, from Richardson, joined in 2016, competing in 27 events his first year. Both are now among the world’s top amateur golfers and represented Team
Spieth himself credits the NTPGA for sparking his love of the game. “It’s really special to help create opportunities for kids following a path similar to mine and a number of other professionals. With so many groups working to make the game accessible and exciting, I’m excited to see what this next generation of North Texas juniors will achieve!”
Jase Summy, now at the University of Oklahoma, played on the NTPGA
Junior Tour from 2014–2019. In 2016, he won five of nine All American Tour events, the NTPGA’s top-tier competition. “The NTPGA runs the best tournaments,” said Summy. Combined, Fang, Stout, and Summy played over 200 events on the tour.
Even Luke Colton, currently ranked No. 4 nationally among juniors, made headlines by reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur and earning a spot on the Junior Ryder Cup team. Colton is one of 10 NTPGA members who competed at the prestigious tournament this summer.

“It starts with the incredible PGA coaches we have in our Section,” said Harrison. “Combined with our structured pathway, year-round competition, and strong community support, it’s the perfect environment.”
While Morrison didn’t compete in NTPGA events, his family moved to Dallas because of the strength of the region’s junior golf scene, further proof of the area’s pull for emerging talent.
In total, seven of the last 26 U.S. Junior Amateur champions, including Spieth, Scheffler, and Will Zalatoris, came through the NTPGA, far outpacing any other state or country.
As for the future, the NTPGA is seeing promising growth on the girls’ side, too. “Participation among girls on the Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour has more than doubled in the last 15 years,” said Kelly Gilley, Executive Director of the NTPGA. “We’re excited about what’s ahead.”
It’s been a remarkable summer for North Texas golfers, and the question now is: #WHOSNEXT?

A new beginning for junior golf that is founded on mentorship, family, and fun
The Northern Texas PGA Foundation, in partnership with Scottie and Meredith Scheffler, is proud to announce the creation of the Randy Smith Tour, a new, no-cost level of the Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour established for children ages 6-12 to learn tournament golf.
The tour honors Randy Smith, PGA. Smith is a legendary PGA of America Golf Professional, mentor, and coach whose impact has shaped generations of players, including Scheffler, through his lifelong commitment to developing both great golfers and great people.
The Randy Smith Tour is not about competition at this entry level of our Junior Tour; it is about fun, family, and mentorship. Modeled after the values that defined the Scheffler family’s own journey in junior golf, the mission of this tour is to offer a joyful step into the game, where every child feels welcomed, supported, and celebrated. The Randy Smith Tour aims to deliver mentorship and shared experiences.
“This tour is about giving kids the same gift Randy gave me,” said Scottie Scheffler, three-time Ryder Cup team
J No charge to play
member, four-time major championship winner and former Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour member. “He taught me that golf is about more than just scores. It’s about character, respect, and the people who help you along the way. That’s the legacy that Meredith and I are excited to pass on. We are proud to help start the Randy Smith Tour.”
Starting in the late spring of 2026, the Randy Smith Tour will initially conduct 1012 events across East Texas, North Texas, and West Texas, growing to 20-25 events annually starting in 2027. This will add to the nearly 500 Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour events the Foundation already runs each year for kids ages 6-19.
Through the generosity of the Scheffler family and others who believe in the tour’s mission, the Randy Smith Tour will remove financial barriers that at times prevent families from getting involved in the game. Events on the Randy Smith Tour will be free of charge, to ensure that every child, regardless of background, can experience the joy of golf in a positive and welcoming environment.
For more information, please contact Mark Harrison at 214-420-7421 or mharrison@ntpga.com.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Dale Fisher and Eddie Heinen of Fisher Putters—and let me tell you, it was one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve had in a long time. Like most golfers, I’m always chasing that elusive goal: sinking more putts and shaving strokes off my scorecard. Putting is the great equalizer— it can be pure joy or total frustration. Think about it: whether you’re bombing a drive, sinking a long-range putt, or nailing a clutch six-footer for the win, those moments are electric. So why wouldn’t you want cutting-edge technology in the club you use for over 40% of your shots?
Rewind to the 1990s:
Dr. Dale Fisher—creator of the softest USGA-approved putter face in golf— enters the scene.
Got your attention? Thought so.
Eddie Heinen knows a thing or two about putting. He won the 2002 California State Amateur at Pebble Beach (yes, with a belly putter—don’t get him started on that ban). He played at BYU from 1988 to 1992 alongside Mike Weir and Dean Wilson under legendary coach Karl Tucker. Today, Heinen calls Dr. Fisher “The Godfather of Putters” and has teamed up with him to relaunch Fisher Putters. Their latest creation, the Edge Series, is available at fisherputters.com.
In simple terms: KEVFLEX. This patented polyurethane insert, developed by Dr. Fisher over three decades ago, is inspired by Kevlar—nearly indestructible but engineered to be soft. KEVFLEX delivers superior feel, feedback, and

distance control. It’s proven to be more accurate than any other putter face in the game.
Ask Siri or Alexa.
“Hey Siri, why is a soft polymer putter face better than a metal one?”
“A soft polymer face provides a more responsive feel, helping golfers control distance and improve accuracy.”
Dr. Fisher’s KEVFLEX insert eliminates dimple deflection—a phenomenon Bryson DeChambeau has studied extensively. It improves accuracy and distance control, especially on fast or sloped greens. The ball stays on the putter face up to four times longer than with steel or milled faces, reducing torque and enhancing feel.
Short putts won’t ricochet offline anymore. Heinen explains: “From six feet, hitting the edge of a dimple can send your putt two inches off line. Doc knew this years ago. Putting is about confidence, and once you understand the consistency of KEVFLEX and the Optimal Aiming Arrow Design, you’ll know you’ve got the best tech on the greens.”
There’s an animated presentation at fisherputters.com showcasing Dr. Fisher’s 30+ years of innovation that I encourage you to watch.
“His designs have been copied, but nothing matches the feel of KEVFLEX,” Heinen says. “Once you try a Fisher Putter, every other putter will feel like a brick.”
For more information go to www. fisherputters.com.

Dr. Dale Fisher

Fisher Putters, created by Dr. Dale Fisher, feature the patented Kevflex insert that set the USGA standard for face softness. This groundbreaking technology promotes a smooth, immediate roll and eliminates dimple deflection –one of the top reasons short putts miss the mark.
Our latest innovation, the Optimal Aiming Arrows, is scientifically proven to improve a golfer’s aim by over 37% compared to standard alignment lines.
With over 20 USGA-conforming approvals and patents, Dr. Fisher’s commitment to performance and precision is unmatched.

When the accomplished team of John Colligan and Trey Kemp began their work of redesigning a Fort Worth golf course almost 100 years old, they paid close attention to the history of Meadowbrook Golf Course.
Originally designed in 1924 by the man often considered the Father of Texas Golf, John Bredemus, Colligan and Kemp wanted to do something special with the unique topography in East Fort Worth.
Bredemus has a sterling reputation as a pioneer in Texas golf with many designs all over the state from Henderson Country

Club in East Texas to San Felipe Country Club in Del Rio. In Fort Worth, Bredemus is credited with helping design Colonial Country Club in 1936 and Rockwood Park in 1938. Both of those courses involved a collaboration with the highly esteemed Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma who is famous for designing Prairie Dunes in Kansas and Southern Hills in Tulsa. It was the 2017 renovation of Rockwood by Colligan and Kemp that supplied the momentum for the Meadowbrook project that began in November of 2023. The course just opened in late September of 2025 to universal rave reviews because of the rerouting efforts to highlight a unique hilly piece of property that makes the golfer feel as if the course is in the Texas Hill Country rather than the DFW Metroplex.
To gain a better understanding of golf’s history in Fort Worth, it is good to ponder the talents of Bredemus, a native of Michigan who was both a gifted athlete and a teacher who moved to Texas where he was enthralled with both playing golf and designing courses. He also promoted the game and helped
start the tour events in San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. He is given credit for luring the first major to Texas when the PGA Championship was played at Cedar Crest in Dallas in 1927, won by the great Walter Hagen.
Now the spirit of Bredemus has new life at Meadowbrook with an attractive layout designed on a canvas of impressive elevation changes.
“After the successful renovation of Rockwood in 2017, which really improved the golf facilities for Fort Worth, the city wanted to apply that same formula to revitalize Meadowbrook,” Kemp said. “The facility turned 100 in 2024 and had outlived many of its golf course components.”
Like their work at Rockwood, Colligan and Kemp rerouted the holes dramatically to take advantage of the natural terrain. In the end, 15 of 18 holes were changed.

unique property features, the fairways were widened to allow the golfer greater freedom off the tee. After 50 years of encroaching trees, this allows the player a chance to see more of the layout design features such as rock outcroppings and twisting water features.
“Rerouting the golf course to take advantage of the topography was a major part of the renovation,” said Kemp. “The only holes not rerouted were holes 10, 12 and 13. However, the twelfth changed from a par four to a par five and the thirteenth went from a par five to a par four.”
In addition to the accentuation of the
Colligan and Kemp treasured this opportunity and proved their mettle with the visually stunning par 3 eighth hole that will surely have players grabbing their cell phones for pictures. The relatively short hole plays from a giant bluff to a well contoured green below. The hole looks so inviting that dreams of holes in one are surely in the making. Nothing breeds confidence like a big green sitting some 100 feet below the tee box.

Birdies For Charity Generates Nearly $19 Million For Fort Worth Area Charities During 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge Tournament
Fort Worth, Texas --October 23, 2025 – For the 21st consecutive year, the Charles Schwab Challenge PGA TOUR event has assisted in providing a multi-million-dollar infusion of cash for the local charitable community through the tournament’s Birdies For Charity campaign.
Officials from the Charles Schwab Challenge and Fort Worth Colonial Charities announced today that $18,976,177 was generated through this year’s Birdies For Charity program during the 2025 tournament at Colonial.

The tournament’s 33 charity partners secured $18,976,177 in donation pledges from their supporters, then the PGA TOUR pros did their part by making 1,269 birdies during the Charles Schwab Challenge last May.
“Over the past two decades, our Birdies For Charity program has continued to gain momentum and brand identity. Birdies For Charity is only successful due to our partner charities being fully committed to the initiative which includes these non-profits putting in a great deal of work to promote it and to secure the pledges,” commented Logan Dickinson,
Of the PGA TOUR events staging Birdies For Charity campaigns, the Charles Schwab Challenge is one of the largest on TOUR. Since the program’s inception locally in 2005, Birdies For Charity has generated nearly $195,000,000 for participating charities, all being local.
“Once again, the front-line charitable organizations in Tarrant County have stepped up and have been very intentional with their efforts surrounding Birdies For Charities – the result: Millions of dollars pouring back into our community that we all love. Fort Worth Colonial Charities is proud to be the facilitator, and we are excited to see all the good work that these funds support,” noted Brian Estridge, President and CEO of Fort Worth Colonial Charitie

Tucked in the Piney Woods of East Texas, Westwood Shores is a premier residential resort community in Trinity County, situated 90 miles north of Houston and just 20 miles northeast of Huntsville. Our championship golf course—masterfully designed by Carlton Gibson, whose distinguished portfolio includes Eagle’s Bluff, Moody Gardens Golf Club, and Galveston Country Club—winds gracefully through our 1,300-acre neighborhood along the shores of Lake Livingston. We’ve witnessed a remarkable surge in rounds played, more than tripling since 2024 while sustaining strong momentum into 2025. This robust growth has empowered us to implement transformative enhancements: an expanded driving range, the Better Billy Bunker system revitalizing our sand traps, a new resort-style swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness center overlooking the course, and a fleet of EZ-GO golf carts equipped with GPS.
With these strategic investments, we hope to encourage even more play in the coming years while cultivating a vibrant community. We remain committed to elevating the experience— and we look forward to welcoming you as our newest guest, member, or even better, neighbor.

The Southern Texas PGA’s two marquee championships delivered storybook finishes this fall, as two familiar names — Casey Russell and Omar Uresti — rose above deep and talented fields to claim major victories. From the rolling hills of Big Easy Ranch to the coastal winds of Eagle Pointe, the 2025 season closed in spectacular fashion.
The 58th STPGA Section Championship took center stage at The Covey at Big Easy Ranch in Columbus, Texas, bringing together 112 PGA of America Members in pursuit of one of the Section’s most coveted titles. Beyond the prestige of hoisting the Tommy Aycock Trophy, the event also served as a qualifying opportunity for the 2026 PGA Professional Championship, a decisive stop on the Player of the Year race, and the final chance to earn a spot on #TeamSTPGA for the Joe Black Cup and Levy Cup Matches.
In the end, it was Casey Russell, PGA Director of Golf at Big Easy Ranch, who defended home turf in thrilling fashion. Russell carded rounds of 70–71–141

(-3) to capture his second Section Championship title, his first coming in 2016.
The competition was tight from the outset, with a three-way tie for the lead after Round 1 between Russell, Alan Hodde, PGA (Axis Golf Academy & Fitting Center), and Greg Hiller, PGA (TPC San Antonio). As 16 other players lingered within three shots, Russell’s deep familiarity with The Covey proved decisive.

“Hodde is one of my best friends, and I love playing with Greg, so it was an incredible group to play with throughout the day,” said Russell. “I know this course better than anyone on the planet, so I felt confident coming into today.”
After a birdie on the final hole of regulation, Russell forced a playoff with Jesse Droemer, PGA. The duel extended through four playoff holes before Russell sealed the victory with a birdie on the 18th — a moment of redemption and pride on his home course.
“It feels really good to be back and playing great golf this year,” Russell shared. “I took a look at the trophy to make sure my name was still on it.”
The top eight finishers earned spots on the First Community STPGA Team heading to the 2026 PGA Professional Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Joining exempt players Bobby Gates, PGA, and Droemer will be Russell, Steve Jurgensen, Robert Scott, Gilbert Mendez, Alan Hodde, Jamie Fraser, Greg Hiller, and J.T. Taylor.

The Southern Texas PGA extended special thanks to owner Billy Brown, PGA General Manager Ricky Lyons, and the entire Big Easy Ranch team for hosting another memorable event. With its immaculate conditions and recently earned recognition as the best new golf course in the country,The Covey provided an unforgettable stage for championship golf.
The Section also celebrated AustinWylie, PGA Teaching Professional at Mac Wylie Golf Center, as the 2025 STPGA Player of theYear, capping a season highlighted by consistent top finishes and a major victory at the Omega Transactions Memorial Championship.Wylie now earns an exemption into a PGA TOUR event in 2026.
Looking ahead, the 2026 STPGA Section Championship is set for Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Bee Cave,Texas, on September 28–29, 2026, promising another thrilling showcase of the Section’s best.
The STPGA thanks its Presenting Sponsors — Lexus, First Community, BagCaddie, Strackaline, Club Car, Rolex, and Corebridge Financial — along with its Supporting Sponsors — Gallagher, GOLF Channel, PGA TOUR, Titleist–FootJoy, Callaway, TaylorMade, Ship Sticks, and Nike — for their continued partnership and dedication to elevating the game.

Omar Uresti Goes Back-to-Back at the EnergyTransferTexas Senior Open.
Just a few weeks later, the spotlight shifted east to Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu, where the 29th Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open lived up to its reputation as the largest State Senior Open in the country — and then some.
In a dramatic finish that required extra holes, PGA Life Member Omar Uresti etched his name into the history books, becoming the first ever back-to-back Champion of the storied event.
This year’s field represented 21 different states, with competitors traveling

more than 62,000 miles collectively to take part. True to form, the 54-hole championship came down to a threeway playoff between Uresti, Guy Boros (Plantation, FL) — the 2022 Champion — and Wes Short (Buda, TX).
“My mindset was to attack,” said Uresti, who now sets his sights on the Senior PGA Professional Championship in Florida. “I wanted to apply as much pressure as possible to the other two players with high-quality shots, and I’m happy I was able to do that.”
On the playoff hole — the par-5 18th — Uresti delivered under pressure, hitting his third shot from 51 yards to within ten inches for a tap-in birdie and the victory.
“It feels great to win; this is the highlight of my year,” said Uresti. “I haven’t played that well this season, so it was great to get off to a fast start Wednesday and then deliver in the playoff.”

Uresti opened the week with a 7-under 64, setting the tone for a wireto-wire performance that showcased why he remains one of the most consistent senior professionals in the game.
The Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open continues to thrive thanks to the unwavering support of Energy Transfer, the City of Mont Belvieu, Riceland, Vortech Contracting, OPD, and Eagle Pointe Golf Club. This year marked the renewal of a three-year extension between those partners and the Southern Texas PGA, ensuring the event’s home remains in Mont Belvieu through 2028.
Earlier in the week, the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open Pro-Am kicked off festivities with 23 teams raising funds for PGA REACH Southern Texas and the Energy Transfer Scholarship Fund

— embodying the spirit of community and giving that defines the event.
With a $100,000 purse and $20,000 to the Champion, the 2025 edition once again reaffirmed its standing as a premier competition for senior golf.
The Southern Texas PGA extends its deepest gratitude to Scott Olsen, PGA Head Professional, and the entire team at Eagle Pointe Golf Club for their hospitality and dedication in delivering another firstclass experience.
The 30th Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open returns to Eagle Pointe on October 7–9, 2026, with the Pro-Am set for October 6, as the Section looks ahead to another year of exceptional golf and community impact.
From Russell’s home-course triumph to Uresti’s historic repeat, 2025 underscored everything the Southern Texas PGA stands for — excellence, camaraderie, and championship golf at the highest level. With continued growth, passionate partners, and elite professionals leading the way, the future of Southern Texas golf has never looked brighter. -
