WISDOM & UNDERSTANDING When Mr. Graham asked me to write an article regarding my ongoing journey as an entrepreneur, I was honored and a bit nervous. At the time of his request, I recently relocated back to San Antonio from Dallas/ New York. In addition to relocating, I now have a wife, a two-month-old son, and am working to complete course requirements to become a licensed barber. My life and Œ‘—”Â?‡› Šƒ˜‡ „‡‡Â? Understanding your business as a whole and the underpinning elements that make-up that whole give ›‘— –Š‡ ƒ„‹Ž‹–› ƒ�† ‘’’‘”–—�‹–› –‘ ƒ…–—ƒŽ‹œ‡ ›‘—” †”‡ƒ�•Ǩ The key words that I highly recommend you give careful attention to are Ability and Opportunity.

While the word, success, bounces verbally about today like a soccer ball, through my experience, study, and ongoing education, success is an extremely subjective term. We now live in a time of “insta.� The good ol’ days, golden age, and times of sweat equity and elbow grease seem to be decades behind us. As our world and the speed of information moves at an unfathomable clip, perception, relative possibility and reality seem to have been diluted. On October 9th 2004, 39 days shy of my 22nd birthday, I knew what I wanted to do with my life: I wanted nothing more than to open and thrive as the owner of my very own sneaker store and produce clothing.

That October day was a pivotal and beautiful moment in my life – and one I will never forget. It’s going on eleven years since that day of direction and a lot has happened since then. I’ve produced two clothing lines, opened and closed a beautiful store S.C.R., invested over ̈́ͳͲͲ ‘ˆ Â?› ‘™Â? Â?‘Â?‡›ǥ ƒÂ?† ÇŻÂ˜Â‡ „‡‡Â? –Š”‘—‰Š „ƒ† „—•‹Â?॥ †‡ƒŽ• ‹Â? ™Š‹…Š Ž‘•– ‘˜‡” ̈́ʹ͡ Ǥ —”‹Â?‰ –Š‹• –‹Â?‡ǥ though, I was merely a dream chaser lacking wisdom, understanding, and the business acumen necessary to ƒˆˆ‘”† Â?‡ –Š‡ ƒ„‹Ž‹–› ƒÂ?† ‘’’‘”–—Â?‹–› –‘ ƒ…–—ƒŽ‹œ‡ Â?›

business objectives. My beautiful struggle and constant hunger to execute my objective has helped me obtain the insight necessary in becoming an astute businessman.

I have tremendous love and deep appreciation for reading actual books. I’m exceedingly grateful I have the ability to read, comprehend, retain and apply acquired knowledge. I attribute my continual progression, both personally and professionally, to reading feverishly since I dropped out of college in 2005. A Yahoo™ article stated the 5th habit of wealthy individuals is reading. The article went on to state wealthy individuals read books that are career or business-oriented. They are able to translate that knowledge into actionable information, which they then apply to their daily decision-making.

Post my departure from college, I read, read, and read some more…and I’m still reading! If I don’t know it, I want to read about it. If I know it, I want to re-enforce it. While understanding is an invaluable tool, mentorship is the toolbox you carry wisdom and understanding in.

Hunters have guides, be it automated or actual.

Without a guide to direct and steer you in the right direction, your energy and valuable – and in some cases limited – resources can be wasted. Some San Antonians hold on to the belief San Antonio is a town with 1.4 million people. Elements, aspects and or trends that make a city a major attraction either don’t work here or may take quite a while to catch on before it’s adopted as normal. Operating a business in a town like San Antonio is something I never before factored into my business strategy. These are conditioned and behavioral beliefs.

ǯ ϐ mentor, my guide. A combination of too much here and too little there, and lack of focus was the cause of my business’ demise and something I take full responsibility for.

When I heard why Bruce and Candie Graham co-founded Alumni Services Foundation (ASF), it put a huge smile on my face. They have a goal, which has a tall but conquerable task: to give SWHS alumni a lifeline to each other – something we as SW alumni never had. Traversing through business alone without knowing where to get the right help is very tough and disheartening. I’ve cried and felt very lonely but my goals, mind set and energy just became more focused.

One of the greatest and altruistic moments was when I discovered that going about this journey alone has enabled me to become a guide to others! The lost capital, the tears and lonely chapters of my life were and are well worth it because I am blessed with opportunity to ǯ dreamed about. Now with experience, I’m reading even more these days. Information that I acquire funnels through a different

ϐ success is! It is a euphoric feeling and I have faith this feeling will come in your life. Euphoria does not come without its requirement of executing and exploring the unordinary. These two aspects will change your life and sometimes shake you to the core. But my hope is that you will not have to manage these new aspects and emotions alone. A call, text, email or even a meeting over coffee can change how you can respond to a business situation and that’s what ASF’s objective is: to ensure you have available options – resources – from which seek guidance.

In closing I say this to you: read. Read some more.

Focus. Find a mentor. Ask the right questions to get the answers you’re looking for. Learn how to execute. Read Ǥ Ǥ Ǥ Work smart. Smile as much as possible. Love your Ǥ Ǥ Pray. Help your fellow man/women. Take your dreams and yourself seriously. Speak things into existence.

Respect yourself. Finally: be the change you wish to see in the world.

CHRISTOPHER RAY LOPEZ Š”‹•–‘’Š‡” ƒ› ‘’‡œ ™ƒ• „‘”� ƒ�† ”ƒ‹•‡† ‘� the Southwest side of San Antonio where he attended Indian Creek Elementary, Christa McAuliffe Middle School, and graduated from Southwest High School (SWHS) in 2004. Chris played football and baseball through grade school and was a two-year letterman All-District Offensive Tackle under Coach Manuel Valles.

After two years playing ball, Chris received a Division II football scholarship to Minnesota State University ‘‘”Š‡ƒ†Ǥ Š”‹• ™ƒ• –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– ’Žƒ›‡” –‘ ”‡…‡‹˜‡ ƒÂ? athletic scholarship after All-American running back, Rashawn Mosley.

Chris attended college for one year before getting homesick. He decided to return to San Antonio and pursue other ventures. After spending one year attending a community college, Chris got a job with San Antonio energy supplier, CPS Energy. After one year, he accepted a career position as a power plant operator.

Chris was one of the youngest power plant operators to work the Sommers and Deely coal-powered plants at the Calaveras Lake site. During this time, Chris picked up boxing as a way to stay in shape; at the time he weighed 300 pounds. One year later, he was 100 pounds lighter so he decided to try his luck at amateur boxing.

Chris won the Golden Gloves sub-novice and novice divisions two consecutive years. Later, Chris was introduced to mixed martial arts (MMA) and instantly fell

in love with the sport. In the process, he went from 300 to 185 pounds. Not yet knowing exactly what he wanted to †‘ ‹Â? ÂŽÂ‹ÂˆÂ‡ÇĄ Š‡ …‘Â?’‡–‡† ‹Â? ƒÂ?ƒ–‡—” Ď?‹‰Š–• ĥ ƒ Š‘„„› and picked up a 3-0 record. He wondered what it was like –‘ –”ƒ‹Â? ÂˆÂ—ÂŽÂŽÇŚÂ–Â‹Â?‡ ĥ ƒ Ď?‹‰Š–‡”Ǣ –Š‡ Â?‘”‡ Š‡ –Š‘—‰Š– ƒ„‘—– ‹–ǥ –Š‡ Â?‘”‡ Š‡ Ď?‹‰—”‡† Š‡ ™ƒÂ?–‡† –‘ Ď?‹‰Š– ’”‘ˆ‡••‹‘Â?ƒŽŽ› for a living. One day – four years later still working at the plant – Chris was manually shutting down one of the units outside when a 25,000 psi valve of saturated steam blew up on him. MATTHEW D. GONZALEZ Ph.D. IT CAN BE DONE! I’m the fourth in line of five children who graduated in 1991. I honestly wasn’t sure what direction I was going to take during the summer after graduation as my parents really didn’t push one thing over another on me to pursue. Fortunately, the Southwest Athletic Boosters offered me a $250 per-semester athletic scholarship throughout my tenure in college as long as I maintained a minimum GPA. I played basketball in junior high and high school.

However, my geometry teacher helped me look

I likely wasn’t good enough to succeed at the college level. Thankfully, the athletic scholarship focused more on the scholarship side of college over the athletic side.

Midsummer after graduation, Palo Alto College offered me a small scholarship to join their first cohort of Honors students. Between the two scholarships offered, it became clear that I needed to go to college and take advantage of

I knew that I would lose the scholarships and my academic record would be visible to potential employers after college.

I answered the wake-up call with straight A’s during one of my sophomore semesters – a first for me in life – and eventually transferred to UTSA, graduating with a BBA in ’95 with a concentration in Information Systems. College was a confidence booster and launched me into a career in technology at USAA for ten years where I worked as an IT Developer, Systems Analyst, IT Architect, and IT Project Manager for USAA. My lessons learned and successes at USAA in managing $10+ million dollar projects and programs provided me with the necessary experience to pursue multiple entrepreneurial endeavors.

In that timeframe, I also pursued a Master’s in Business Administration from St. Mary’s.

After a relatively successful technical career with a solid of education and certifications under

my belt, I pursued an event management company and then launched an on-line publishing company. The confidence I had to pursue these endeavors was largely due to knowing that, if the businesses didn’t make it, I had enough experience and education to fall back on as a back-up plan. While I didn’t need to ever explore the back-up plan, I did lean on my education in business plenty to get me through the ups and downs of business ownership.

In the time frame of owning and running the businesses, I ™‘Â?‡ —’ ‘Â?‡ †ƒ› ƒÂ?† ”‡ƒŽ‹œ‡† ‹– ™ƒ• –‹Â?‡ –‘ ’—”•—‡ ƒ †‘…–‘”ƒ–‡ degree. In the evening while working at USAA and then running the businesses, I supplemented my income by teaching adjunct at several universities, on-line and face to face. I actually began –‡ƒ…Š‹Â?‰ –Š”‡‡ †ƒ›• ƒˆ–‡” Ď?‹Â?‹•Š‡† –Š‡ ÂƒÂ•Â–Â‡Â”ÇŻÂ• †‡‰”‡‡ǥ ĥ ƒ university was pursuing people with my skillset and education.

Believe me when I say I learn as much from them as I attempt to teach them in return.

Pursuit of an education always comes with a cost outside of Â?‘Â?‡›Ǥ Š‡”‡ǯ• ƒ Ž‘– ‘ˆ ’‡”•‘Â?ƒŽ •ƒ…”‹Ď?‹…‡ ™‹–Š ƒ Žƒ”‰‡ ”‹’’Ž‡ ‡ˆˆ‡…– on family and immediate friends. I was adamant on completing school through hard work, sweat equity, and with no student loans.

Somehow, I turned that goal into reality, never having a student or personal loan, much less credit card debt. It can be done!

This article title actually is a song title from a popular 1961 movie musical, Flower Drum Song. In ϐ ǡ ǯ about his father’s generation. Their mutual lack of understanding each other’s word choices and actions ϐ how to make their relationship work. Sound familiar?

In today’s world, kids’ texting acronyms replace the Webster’s dictionary words their parents grew up using to communicate. This will confuse anybody.

For purposes here, I say the answer to the question depends on the generation asking it. All too often, people say “If I had only known, I would have done things differently. I would have waited to marry. I would have waited to have kids. I would have started college right after graduating. I never would’ve worn that to an interview.” You get the idea.

What if today’s younger generation didn’t have to wait to learn things so, twenty years from now, we don’t hear them say “If I had only known.”? Who knew ϐ Ǥ Ǥ it’s in one word: Mentorship. This concept of sharing one’s knowledge with others less experienced speaks to bottom-line philosophy of helping others. It is this simple. I’ll explain.

Think about this for a minute: You and/or ϐ in life what you enjoy for a career. Fantastic! What if what interests you for a life-long career doesn’t interest your child(ren)? Does this ring true? Here’s a possible solution to increase support of your child’s interests. Mentorship provides opportunities to connect kids with those who not only share in their possible career interests, but are eager to share their knowledge and experience with the younger generation. Mentorship validates one thing or the ǣ ϐ this child is on the right track, or it tells this person “You know what, this isn’t for me.” Either way, the experience teaches and opens minds. It introduces new ways of thinking, new ways of doing things, and new opportunities.

Here’s the bottom line. When asking what to do about the ‘other’ generation, how about we all work to bring the two together through mentorships?

ACCOMPLISHMENTS o Addition of ASF Advisory Committee o Doubled number of alumni business owner and community-at-large ad directory contributors o Presented ASF scholarship opportunity to 700+ seniors in March o Award of ten (10) $,1000.00 scholarships o 2015 ASF Summer Shindig hosted 350 guests, including the c/o ’85’s 30th reunion attendees and the decade of 60’ – 69’s 50th reunion attendees.
