CEO's letter

20 YEARS YOUNG!

T

his year, the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) is celebrating a milestone.

Back in 1997, the AGLCC was founded to help LGBT business owners succeed. Who knew that a group of business owners creating an organization of LGBT professionals two decades ago would become the thriving chamber of commerce it is today? Five years after organizing, AGLCC became a founding member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to further stimulate economic opportunities for the LGBT community. Today, AGLCC continues to be a force for LGBT professionals in Austin through education and training opportunities, such as the Biz Dev 101 program for business owners, and through leadership opportunities, including educational scholarships awarded by the nonprofit AGLCC Foundation. To say that AGLCC and the LGBT community at large have made strides since 1997 would be a vast understatement. In the ensuing years, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, the U.S. military allowed gay men and lesbians to serve openly, and President Barack Obama declared the Stonewall Inn – the birthplace of the modern LGBT civil rights movement in the U.S. – a national monument. But now, in 2017, the existence of AGLCC and the power of the LGBT community are perhaps more vital than ever, as the current political climate threatens to, at the least, damage the gains we have made over the past several decades. AGLCC has witnessed and has helped foster 20 years of resilience, diversity, economic opportunity and business leadership in the LGBT community. To be sure, the 20th anniversary of AGLCC and the various LGBT accomplishments of the past 20 years deserve to be celebrated. However, we cannot let our guard down and assume that the status quo will remain the status quo. We cannot stand still; we must remain vigilant. Over the past 20 years, we’ve worked too hard to get to where we are now. We cannot let that progress slip away. So I implore you to get involved in AGLCC, to support pro-LGBT causes, to fight antiLGBT initiatives, and to stand up for yourself and your LGBT brothers, sisters and allies. After all, you want the next 20 years to be even more momentous for the LGBT community, don’t you? MAKING A HOUSE A Home BY JEFF DAVIS

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments any of us will ever make. Whether you’re a brand-new homeowner or a longtime homeowner, here are some tips from local experts on how you can make your house more of a home.

14

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

Your roof is one of the most vital parts of your new home. Make sure you clean your gutters regularly, and cut trees back so they do not ruin your roof by scraping or dripping sap on it. –Christine Bowen Co-owner, Austin Roofing and Construction

Adding curb appeal can be tricky because you can’t please everyone, so my advice would be to keep it simple and neutral. A fresh coat of paint is always great. If you want to go the extra mile, install a new front door. –Dillion Matthew Dorsey Owner, James Matthew Design

If you’re going to buy a house with a yard, make that yard a place you want to hang out in. We like to see people using their outdoor spaces, because the more they do, the more aware they become of our climate, our ecology, and the plant and animal life of our area. And, of course, a well-landscaped yard adds value to your home. –Liz Baloutine Owner, Seedlings Gardening

SU M M ER 2 0 1 7 | A G L C C . O R G

15

Texas does not have licensing requirements. This means anyone can come into Texas and be a roofer, framer, foundation technician or many other essential tradesperson. Make sure your contractor is from your part of Texas, has general liability insurance and has great reviews. –Christine Bowen

I would suggest new homeowners have their irrigation system inspected by a licensed landscape irrigator before they purchase their house so that they will be aware of any costly repairs that might need to take place before they purchase their home. I would also suggest inspecting the pressure regulator as well as the backflow device for proper operation. –Philip Mihalik President and Owner, Total Lawn and Sprinkler

16

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

Stay within your budget. Find an affordable house in a good school district. The market value of houses tends to be higher in good school districts. –Jeff Koford Owner, BoxDrop Mattress

The best advice I can give is know what you want to have done before bringing in a remodeler. “Prior proper planning prevents poor outcomes” is a little mantra I use to help remind me and others what to expect. –Henry Blas Owner, Centex Remodel and Repair

Be sure that any shrubs or bushes near the house have enough distance between the plant and the siding of the house, as well as making sure any sprinkler heads are in good working order and not sprinkling the house. This will prevent mildew, wood rot and deterioration of stucco. Also, have your rain gutters cleaned yearly, and be sure your down spouts are able to flow water away from your home. –Emma Castner Owner, Castner Coatings Wallpapering and Fine Finishes

SU M M ER 2 0 1 7 | A G L C C . O R G

17

You should have a clear and concise budget and overall goal. What are you trying to achieve? Make sure whatever that is, you keep that image in your line of sight. No one wants to spend three months remodeling and still be unhappy with the end result. –Dillion Matthew Dorsey

Curb appeal on a budget can be as simple as clean windows and light fixtures. Keep your yard mowed and edged, and have vibrant flowers planted. –Jeff Koford

Contractors tend to trample your landscaping, so you may have to re-do or clean up your landscaping after a renovation project. If you’re going to renovate your indoor and outdoor spaces, finish the indoor first before you renovate the outside. Renovating your outside living spaces could be as simple and cost-effective as adding some lawn chairs and some borders. –Liz Baloutine

18

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

If the renovation is a new roof, make sure you are not home for the install. It is loud and messy, and it will have you locked in your home for most of the day. Go out and have fun instead. –Christine Bowen

Unless you have a contractor that you know and trust, or one who comes highly recommended, it’s a good idea to check references and ask to see some samples of their work. Plus, get at least three estimates from different contractors. –Emma Caster

To maximize curb appeal, I would suggest adding new sod to a front yard if it’s summertime or winter rye in the colder months, since both will give an instant effect of greening up the front yard. Plan irrigation system changes according to the future landscape design you plan on implementing. For instance, you should install any new sod at the very end of the renovation. –Philip Mihalik

When selecting colors, think about the space and the different colors that will be surrounding the paint. For example, when doing a kitchen, consider the tile and backsplash undertones because they can affect the way we perceive color. –Ash Ebbo Manager, Clement’s Paint

Start with the basics. Most of us have a vision of what we want our new home to look and feel like. Stay true to your unique visions and don’t rush or cut corners. For those who are somewhat design-challenged and don’t know where to begin, consult the store where you are shopping. –Rex Bennett Sales and Design Consultant, Gage Furniture

My tip for decorating and furnishing your house would be you don’t have to pay retail. There are plenty of businesses like mine that offer wholesale pricing. You can shop local, save money and support this great community. –Jeff Koford

20

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

When painting your new home, be sure that the painting contractor uses a good primer on all new surfaces prior to painting, then ask for two finish coats to get the best result. In my opinion, primer and paint in one is not as good as using an actual primer first. Understand that when matching a texture to an existing texture, there may be a slight variation. –Emma Castner

Don’t rush anything. We often find that new homeowners are in a hurry to get everything in place and fully design their new space within a matter of weeks. We remind our clients that this is supposed to be a fun process, and you should never settle for something you don’t completely love. Take your time, have fun, be creative. –Dillion Matthew Dorsey

BUSINESS PARTNERS, LIFE PARTNERS

BY SHANNON MANTROM

Living Together and Working Together

freepik.com

Ever wonder how those amazing “power couples” who are both partners in business and partners in life got there? Did they meet at work, fall in love, then decide to strike out on their own? Or was it the other way around? In this article, you’ll meet three AGLCCmember power couples who share their stories of success and the ups and downs of bringing their work home with them. JAMES NOWLIN AND JOHN SHELDON OF EXCEL GLOBAL PARTNERS Busy executives James Nowlin and John Sheldon met via an online dating site in 2006 and, not to sound cliché, it really was love at first sight.

“The moment we first saw each other, we knew that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, so we never dated,” John says. James had just completed his examination for the State Bar of Texas to practice law and John was chief financial officer at a large corporation. Eventually, James decided to leave a top Texas law firm to start an executive consulting firm, Excel Global Partners. John joined him a few years later. Together, they hustled and grew the business, which has done business in more than 20 states and 15 countries. “Working together has taught us about the importance of effective communication and giving each other a break,” John says. 23

“Our firm provides services by tackling very intense financial and operational challenges for corporate, governmental and non-profit clients, so many workdays are very long, high-stress days.” “Through it all,” John adds, “we believe in the power of teamwork, strengthening our own respective strengths, and always being kind and gentle in communication with the other person. These skills translate directly into benefits within our personal relationship. The other plus of running a business together is that we get to spend tremendous amounts of time together. In reality, we have spent more time together growing our companies than many couples spend together in a lifetime. We not only love each other, but we like each other. Otherwise, we would not have been blessed with nearly as much success.” Where do these two see themselves in 10 years?

Aside from Excel Global Partners having grown, John and James envision splitting time between their two favorite places: Austin and Maui. To learn the secrets of their success, pick up a copy of James Nowlin’s new book, The Purposeful Millionaire: 52 Rules for Creating a Life of Wealth and Happiness Now. LAURA BARTON AND JUDY WILDER OF BARTON WILDER CUSTOM IMAGES You never know when and where love will find you. Girl Scouts probably would not come to mind first, but that’s exactly how Laura Barton and Judy Wilder first met. “Judy tried to recruit me as a Girl Scout leader when our oldest daughters were 8 years old,” Laura recalls. “I was a dismal failure, so she adopted me and my daughter, Corrie, into her troop. We were business partners for many years before we

became life partners, so we really knew and loved each other.” Being photographers, one might think a clash of egos could easily occur, but that’s not the case with this dynamic duo. “We thoroughly enjoy each other’s company, so it’s lovely to get to spend our waking hours together,” Laura says. “Additionally, because we’ve been working together for so long, we’re like one mind. We rarely have disagreements about our approach to life or work. We are generally on the same page when we approach business decisions. People who’ve observed us working are always astonished at how easily and fluidly we move around each other — like a dance. After three decades, it’s second nature.” However, before jumping into business with your romantic partner, Laura suggests collaborating on something like a wallpapering project or a garage sale. “If you can manage other challenging tasks, you can probably survive a business together,” Laura says. “And remember, some people need more time apart. It can be claustrophobic at times.”

Where do Laura and Judy see themselves in 10 years? “We aspire to hit the road in our RV, Amelia Airstream, and travel/work around the country. Our work as photographers/ videographers allows us the freedom to work anywhere, so we’d like to take advantage of that flexibility,” Laura says. “Additionally, we have four grandkids who are under six years old so we have a lot of grandparenting to do.” She adds, “We also have numerous documentary ideas we hope to pursue since we so enjoyed the first one we produced, ‘Dildo Diaries,’ for which we were honored with the HRC award many moons ago.” TIM AND CHRISTINE BOWEN OF AUSTIN ROOFING AND CONSTRUCTION The LGBT community depends on its straight allies for support in both business and everyday life. As members of the AGLCC, Tim and Christine Bowen epitomize that support. Growing up across the street from one another in Colorado Springs, Colorado, SU M M ER 2 0 1 7 | A G L C C . O R G

the pair are the very picture of “childhood sweethearts.” The couple started their business so they could work together. “Christine has always been a 50 percent owner in my companies,” Tim says. “When we moved to Austin, I noticed her power for lead generation and asked her to put it to work for Austin Roofing and Construction. She makes the phones ring, I make the customers happy.” What are the benefits of a partnership combining business and life affairs? “Full dedication from each other with full support. The knowledge that your partner has integrity in addition to being honest and smart,” Tim says. “We are always willing to make concessions for the betterment of the cause no matter what that cause may be at that moment.” Tim ticks off the pros and cons of being in business with your life partner. The pros include sharing similar goals for business and family matters, agreeing to use personal funds for business purposes,

26

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

being able to go on “lunch dates,” being able to bring the kids to work, and collaborating with someone who has the same level of dedication to the business. As for the cons, Tim says they include having to act like co-workers when you’re mad at each other, resisting the temptation to take too much time to goof off together and steering clear of not taking things too personally. What do things look like for the couple 10 years from now? “We have thought a lot about this. We have talked to the kids and they want to run the company. So, in 10 years we will be training a 19-year-old how to nail a roof down properly,” Tim says. “We plan to still be in our house playing in the backyard with the kids and planning to take over the world.” Please visit the Marketplace section on page 37 if you’d like to contract the services offered by these three AGLCC-member power couples.

How to Cope With

ANXIETY

in Our Post-Election World

BY LAUREN GRIBBLE

Throughout our lives, situations will arise that trigger anxiety. It could be the loss of a job, the breakup of a marriage or the inauguration of a president. On the subject of politics alone, 59 percent of Americans surveyed in March for CareDash.com indicated they were feeling at least some level of post-election anxiety. “Anxiety and nervousness stem from the fear that something bad might happen. These feelings are intensified in times of uncertainty and are also contagious,” says

CareDash.com medical adviser Steven Stosny, a therapist in the Washington, DC., area. Indeed, Austinites are hardly immune from post-election anxiety. John Cooper, a licensed professional counselor, says he and many of his colleagues have noticed an uptick in anxiety among LGBT patients since the 2016 election. “There’s a general angst in terms of how people feel about themselves, their SU M M ER 2 0 1 7 | A G L C C . O R G

29

place in society, their place in relationships and the stability of the world around them,” Cooper says. “There is a legitimate cause for this anxiety, as we don’t know what the future holds. To merely complain about it doesn’t feel like it’s doing anything, and figuring how to take action and figuring out how things are going to be constructive is hard to know.” Cooper says the constant drumbeat of social media has exacerbated the election-oriented anxiety. “I tell my clients that you do have control over how much you listen [to election news] and how much you read,” he says. Aside from going on a social media diet, how can you identify and cope with anxiety — election-related or not? Derek Leighton, an EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and sex therapist in Austin, offers some warning signs of anxiety. “Our perception of anxiety starts, often unconsciously, through something happening in the body, such as clenching, tensing, sweating, tightening, flushing, nausea or quicker pulse, and then we understand that as anxiety as we identify thoughts of being afraid of something that hasn’t happened yet,” Leighton says. Once you’ve pinpointed

30

T HE AGENDA | SUMMER 2017

“YOU DO HAVE CONTROL OVER HOW MUCH YOU LISTEN [TO THE NEWS] AND HOW MUCH YOU READ.” –John Cooper, Licensed Professional Counselor

“CONSIDER HOW YOU ARE SPENDING TIME WITH OTHERS IN YOUR LIFE, WHETHER THAT BE FRIENDS, FAMILY, SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE NEWS.” –Derek Leighton, EDMR and Sex Therapist

“CHANNEL YOUR NERVOUS ENERGY INTO SOMETHING POSITIVE. LOVE PETS? CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING AT YOUR LOCAL SHELTER.” –Adam Maurer, Marriage and Family Therapist

that you’re suffering from anxiety, what can you do? Leighton suggests talking to a good friend, taking a walk or sinking into a relaxing bath. “It is also important to consider how we are spending time with others in our lives, whether that would be friends or family, social media and the news,” Leighton says. “We can moderate exposure, and give ourselves much more time exposed to people and experiences that are nurturing and anxietyreducing or playful and fun, versus the time we spend around people and experiences that increase our anxiety, in order to maintain ourselves.” Additionally, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America recommends: • Taking a timeout by practicing yoga, listening to music, meditating, getting a massage or learning relaxation techniques. • Eating well-balanced meals. Do not skip any meals. Keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand. • Limiting consumption of alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks. • Getting plenty of sleep. When you’re stressed, your body needs more rest. • Exercising every day. • Taking deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. • Setting realistic expectations. Instead of aiming for perfection, aim

for doing your best. • Accepting that you can’t control everything. • Embracing humor and laughter. • Maintaining a positive attitude. • Seeking professional help from a physician or therapist if your anxiety feels overwhelming. Adam Maurer, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Austin, teaches his clients to “make friends” with anxiety, encouraging them to “check in” with your anxiety and ask questions “What are you doing for me?” and “How can you help me stay alive?” One way to make anxiety work for you, Maurer says, is to channel your nervous energy into something positive. For instance, if you’re a pet lover, you might consider volunteering to care for pets at a local animal shelter. If you are suffering from anxiety, remember that you’re not alone. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association

of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting nearly one of every five adults. Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone recently revealed that she’s been waging a lifelong battle with anxiety. “It has always been something that I’ve lived with and it flares up in big ways at different times in my life,” Stone says in a video produced by the Child Mind Institute. “Sometimes while it’s happening, like while I’m in a phase of big turmoil, it feels like it’s never gonna end — but it does.” Need a mental health check-up or a little help buidling positive habits? A QUICK DRIVE TO THE

CARIBBEAN? YOU BET! BY KRISTA BETTS

The busier and more hectic life becomes, the more we crave respite from the hectic pace. Travel can offer just that — a great escape from the daily grind, and the opportunity to recharge, relax and reconnect with the basics. Cruise to Cozumel on Mexico’s Yucutan Peninsula.

A

short drive to the Port of Galveston can offer the perfect escape on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, which has been voted the best cruise line for LGBT travelers. For those who’ve never cruised, the concept of a cruise might seem overwhelming — lots of people in the middle of the ocean and no option for changing your mind once your ship pulls away. However, you’d be surprised by the array of delightful options. Whether you want to lay poolside and soak up the sun or dance the night away, the Liberty of the Seas has something for everyone. The food aboard the ship is nothing short of amazing. My favorite restaurant is Sabor; the front of the menu reads, “Authentic. Modern. Unexpected.” Perfectly titled. Who would have thought the best guacamole and tequila flights would be at sea? Royal Caribbean boasts a full Broadway show on the Liberty (currently Saturday Night Fever); several lounges with Latin music, a piano bar, comics, ice-skating shows, dance parties and parades. Entertainment is included in the cost of your cruise. The Liberty of the Seas also has a sports court; several pools geared toward different age groups; adults-only Jacuzzis in the solarium with amazing views; rockclimbing walls; and a miniature golf course. And that’s just on the ship! Dunn’s Falls, Jamaica

Queer Freak Out Dance Party Yeah, you read that correctly. The impromptu Facebook-driven event was the brainchild of Becca Hyatt in response to the shameful Senate Bill 6, better known as the antitransgender “bathroom bill.” Held February 21 on the street in front of the Governor’s Mansion, the dance party sent a message to conservative lawmakers that the LGBT community will fight all legislation that promotes inequality and marginalizes transgender Texans. The signage alone was worth being there.

aGLIFF never fails to bring it when it comes to cutting-edge, moving or just downright campy movies focused on, and catering to, the LGBT community. The organization, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017, scored with the Austin premiere of “A Very Sordid Wedding,” the sequel to Del Shores’ camp classic “Sordid Lives.” The sequel revisits our favorite characters — Sissy, Noleta, Latrelle and “Brother Boy” — in small-town Texas 16 years after the original movie and in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on marriage equality. Let’s just say high camp, with some heartfelt drama, make this sequel an effort that can stand on its own. Two words: Rose Room.

Paola Aguillon and Stephen Shortnacy, Corazón Tanguero

“Dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire.” –George Bernard Shaw With their long, lithe bodies it’s easy to visualize Paola and Stephen owning any dancefloor with their graceful moves. Meeting in June of 2015, the pair clicked immediately over their love of the tango and soon thereafter Corazón Tanguero was formed. According to Paola, “The elegance, history, variety and embrace of the dance is what has made it my favorite! I do enjoy salsa and bachata on occasion. I still use ballet exercises every day; however, tango is my love.” Being French, Paola fully embraces the French diet. “I treat food as something to enjoy and nurture

my body, as well as a source of experience. I listen to my body for what it needs. Sometimes it’s a salad. Sometimes it’s dark chocolate and a glass of wine. Hydration, variety, whole foods and home-cooked meals are paramount for me. It’s all about balance really.” Corazón Tanguero offers weekly classes in South Austin for both beginners and intermediate-level dancers. They also offer workshops, with their most recent ones focused on queer tango and creating a safe space for the LGBTQ community. All classes and events are open and affirming. corazontangero.com | See listing on p. 37
