With the end of summer in sight, many homeowners might want to take breather from yard work. But, if you’ve been thinking about adding trees or shrubs to your landscape, you should think of fall as your friend. Here’s why.

“The fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in South Texas,” said Calvin Finch, one of San Antonio’s foremost experts on Horticulture and Water Conservation. “The plants have time to develop roots in the cool soil before they face the stress of a hot, dry summer. The process of selecting and planting a tree or shrub is not overly complicated, but it deserves some thought.

If you select well and care for the plant adequately, it could be providing benefits for a long time.”

Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you’re planning to enhance your landscape in the near future.

• Determine where you want a tree or shrub and what you want to accomplish with it. Shade is one reason to add permanent plants, but you will not accomplish your goal if you plant the shade tree on the North side of the house.

• Determine what size tree or shrub you want to fill the available space. Select the species and variety based on mature size not the size that the plant is in the nursery.

• Despite our belief that plants grow slowly, most grow quickly and can outgrow their spot in the landscape unless you have selected well.

• Allow plenty of space between shade trees and buildings or other infrastructure.

Allow at least 10 feet space for a small tree and 20 or 30 feet for a large shade tree.

Keep sidewalks and driveways clear.

• Purchase a reasonable size tree or shrub. Small plants are less expensive and easier to plant. Sometimes they even reach mature size before larger more expensive specimens because they become established more easily.

• Select the right plant for the amount of light that is available. It takes a shadetolerant plant such as viburnum to produce a nice plant in deep shade.

• Dig the hole as deep as the container and two or three times as wide. The top of the root ball should be even with or higher that the surrounding soil. It is generally better to refill the planting hole with the native soil or compost. The plant will have to grow in the native soil if it is to survive, and it is less likely that the hole will form a well that holds water if the soil is consistent with the adjacent soil.

• Firm the soil around the root ball by soaking the area with a slow running hose. The water will help to eliminate air pockets.

“Plant roots grow anytime the soil temperature is 40 degrees or higher, which may occur all winter in Texas,” Finch noted.

“During the winter months, the root systems of the fall-planted specimens will develop and establish themselves. When spring arrives, this expanded root system can support and take advantage of the full surge of spring growth. So people might want to do a little research in September as to what kinds of trees or shrubs will work best in their landscape and then plan to get them in the ground in October. Nurseries also have great sales at this time of year, so now is really the best time to think about the future of your landscape.”

We generally can provide 10 pounds of food for every $1 donated.

Safety Message

One of the top complaints our office receives is regarding speeders in the Stone Oak area. The Board of Directors and office staff have worked hard over the years with SAPD and the District 9 office to find resolutions to this serious problem. Thank you to Councilman Courage and his staff for continuing the effort. More traffic police are in the area, especially in areas prone to speeders, and just prior to the start of the school year, District 9 staff placed signs throughout Stone Oak reminding drivers to slow down. They also assisted the POA by ensuring the repair or replacement of several traffic signs in the area, new striping along Stone Oak Parkway, and repainting of crosswalks and intersection lines. We appreciate the partnership with the District 9 office, and the attentiveness of their staff to our concerns.

Along with the start of school, as our hot Texas summers start to cool, many in our community take advantage of the lower temperatures by taking their exercise activities outdoors. This means more walkers and runners in your neighborhood, and along Stone Oak’s busy streets.

As you walk or run, please remember the safest path is on the sidewalk. If one is not available, please go against the traffic. That way you are certain to see all oncoming traffic.

In addition, bright, highly visible clothing, especially at dusk and evening hours, should always be worn. A flashlight at night can be a life-saver…and when wearing headphones, be sure you can still hear your surroundings.

HUEBNER/SUMMER KNOLL CONSTRUCTION Near Back Gate of Reagan High School We have been told by City of San Antonio Office of Traffic and Capital Improvements (TCI), that a stoplight will soon be coming to the intersection of Huebner Road and Summer Knoll – near the back gate of Reagan High School. This stoplight is part of the Huebner/Hardy Oak connection project.

In addition, SAWS will soon be doing construction along Summer Knoll, but we have been told, in order to help alleviate traffic concerns, they will wait to start the construction until AFTER the Hardy Oak/Huebner connection is complete.

As the POA is informed of project timelines, etc., we will ensure the information is published in our newsletter.

However, the fastest way for us to provide updates to property owners is through our website, www.StoneOakPOA. com. We encourage you to visit the website, and register.

We only send e-blasts about 6-8 times per year, and only in regards to SOPOA events, general assessment reminders, or important SAPD, City of San Antonio, or other very important information. Numbers on houses and mailboxes should be checked periodically for anything that may obstruct view. Clear house number markings are important when it comes to emergency responses to your home in the event of an emergency. Your address number should be clearly viewable from the street free from obstructions. Numbers placed in a lighted area on your home and reflective numbers on mailboxes are ideal. Please check and make updates as needed this may also help with response times when placing calls for service. Reflective numbers can be found at your local hardware store.

BCSO Makes Dreams Come True The #BexarCounty Mounties got to ride with a special guest at Mission Concepcion.

Meet 7 year old Gavin. Gavin is currently battling a severe life threatening illness. Gavin told his father, who is a BCSO Patrol Deputy and active Military that he wanted to meet the BCSO horses in the Mounted unit. He thought he was only going to see the horses. Not only did Gavin’s wish to meet the BCSO Mounties come true but he was surprised with horse ride on September 1, 2018. Gavin was gifted a new hat to wear and told he could ride for as long as he wanted. Gavin spoke about wanting to be a veterinarian when he grows up as he rode. Needless to say we think this brightened up his day and he had a great time. Crime Prevention Tips from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Burglary Tips The last thing you need is to find your vehicle’s window broken and/or items missing from inside.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office suggests taking these simple and important steps to maintain the security of your vehicle: • Do not leave valuables in your car. That sounds like common sense, but drivers/passengers do leave items of value in plain view every day. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automatically a target. If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place items out of sight before reaching your destination or move them inconspicuously.

• Once you are home, unload your valuables immediately.

Do not store valuables in your car any longer than necessary and certainly never overnight and remember to always lock your door.

• Try to park in busy, well-lighted area, or in your garage (if you have one).

• Raise your windows and again lock ALL of your vehicle’s doors even if you plan to be gone for only a brief time.

Every week, items are stolen from unlocked vehicles where the owner expected to be away for “just a second.”

• Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, find another place to park.

• Set any alarm or anti-theft device. If you have one, use it!

• Make a copy of your registration and insurance, and keep them in your wallet or purse. Remove all other forms of identification from your vehicle. Anyone with permission to drive your vehicle should also have a copy of the registration and insurance with them to furnish to the police if necessary. • Do not leave garage door openers in parked vehicles. Leaving your identifying information in your vehicle could make you more likely to become a victim of identity theft or fraud if your vehicle is broken into.

• Don’t think your dark tinted windows will hide your valuables. Thieves often use flashlights to see through tint.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Situational awareness is KEY! What To Do If Your Vehicle Is Burglarized: • Call the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident as soon as possible • If you see suspicious activity, call 210-335-6000 immediately.

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
