OCTOBER 2016

In This Issue: Rainwater Harvesting What the Architectural Committee Does for You Arbor Day 2016 Small Business Saturday Animal Defense League Halloween Safety Tips

Rainwater Harvesting Before the engineering innovations which created the modern water supply system, people collected their own water from wells, rivers, and rain. And while that old-time approach to water supply has faded, there seems to a new revival of homeowners and businesses creating their own water supply through rainwater harvesting. “Rainwater harvesting can be helpful to people looking to supplement their water needs, but it also helps preserve aquifers like the Trinity Glen Rose and the overall environment,” said Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGR) General Manager George Wissmann. “Our district’s mission is centered on conserving, protecting and preserving the Trinity Aquifer, so we are very interested in all methods of saving water, no matter how old that method might be.” Rainwater has always been seen as excellent quality because it is soft, free of sodium and chemicals, and is excellent for landscape use. Although the water from rain is free, the cost to create a sound rain harvesting system can cost several thousand dollars. Plus, rain running off of a rooftop can collect dirt and other minor pollutants. So, Texas regulations call for the installation of a disinfection system if you plan to drink the water. “Rainwater can be used for nearly any purpose, and systems can range in size and complexity,” Wissmann noted. “Some residents and businesses focus on landscape use only, but we know of some large installations with disinfection systems that supplies all needs in the home.” If you’re curious about a rainwater collection system, there are a growing number of websites, associations and vendors providing great information about rainwater harvesting to help you get your feet wet. The State of Texas also has some insightful information, especially on the aspects of Stone Oak - October 2016 - Vol 21 No 10

water treatment. From a regulatory perspective, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has rules that only apply to a rainwater system that supplies potable water for a public water system or for any business that manufactures food or beverages. However, TCEQ does not set minimum treatment requirements for rainwater that will be used as a drinking water source for a single household, nor do they regulate non drinking uses of rainwater. But, TCEQ does offer guidelines in its publication “Harvesting, Storing and Treating Rainwater for Domestic Use.” “Probably the best way to get started in collecting some rain is with rain barrels,” Wissmann explained. “We conduct several rain barrel workshops during the year throughout the district. As of now, the Stone Oak and Fair Oaks Ranch folks have shown great interest in these types of small projects. At those workshops, we explain the process of creating the rain barrel, and then actually help people prepare their own barrels so everyone walks away with a functioning rain barrel. And the cost for the workshop, including the barrel, is only $25. You’ll pay $80-$100 to just buy the barrel at a big box store.” The Trinity Glen Rose is interested in helping your group put on a rain barrel workshop in your neighborhood. Just email us at: info@ TrinityGlenRose.com and we’ll make it happen for you. Visit our website at trinityglenrose.com and subscribe to our newsletter, The Resource, to stay up-to-date on information and events! TGR also offers a free, in-home water consultation to residents living within the District boundaries. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservationrelated items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. Give us a call at 210.698.1155 to schedule! ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 2

What the Architectural Committee Does for You Are you getting ready to make an addition to your house or build a new shed or fence in your back yard? Before you break out the miter saw, or invest a lot of money, make sure to get your plans approved by your association’s architectural committee. While it may seem arbitrary from an individual homeowner’s standpoint, the architectural committee looks out for the entire community. Aside from stopping residents from painting pink polka dots on their houses, the committee’s job is to make sure that the size and style of the project, the type of building materials being used and the overall look of the new structure adhere to the association’s design requirements. Not only does this keep the community looking cohesive, it also helps to keep property values up by preventing individual structures from standing out. Of course, it’s also important to note that unapproved structures might legally have to be removed at the owner’s expense, so save yourself money and headaches by getting approval before you start your project. And did you know the properties outside Stone Oak

subdivisions, but within Stone Oak boundaries, also have to go through an Architectural Review process? In the Stone Oak area you do not see odd color buildings, multiple banners, or other oddities you may see in other parts of town due to the hard work of the Stone Oak ARC. They work hard to ensure all signage, new construction, etc., comply with the Stone Oak Master Plan and Polices. These can be found on our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com, under the Governing Documents tab. This helps keep your property values up, and helps Stone Oak remain one of San Antonio’s most desired communities. So when you’re ready to start your new project, or if the design of your project changes midway through building it, send your plans to the architectural committee first to ensure they are in compliance with the association’s design standards. If there are any issues, the association should notify you, and work with you to help you come up with other options. We appreciate all the hard work residents have done to make their homes and this community beautiful—help us keep Stone Oak looking great by keeping your HOA in the loop of all your building projects.

ARBOR DAY 2016 Free trees, mulch, and compost! On Saturday, October 1st, residents lined up at this annual Stone Oak POA coordinated event to beautify their property! The City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation department donated 200 trees as part of their Initiative to Increase the Tree Canopy. The 5 gallon trees consisted of bur oaks, cedar elms, desert willows, Mexican buckeyes, Mexican sycamores, Mexican white oaks, and Texas mountain laurels. In addition, our friends at New Earth donated bags of mulch and compost to help everyone’s tree get off to a great start. The Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District was on hand to educate residents on conservation, and Master Gardeners were available to answer questions and offer advice. Thank you to the City of San Antonio, New Earth, Trinity Glen Rose CCD, and Stone Oak POA volunteers and staff for making this another successful event for our community!

The Animal Defense League

Hi, I’m Fergus When I was brought to ADL to look for my home, my leg was in very bad shape. The bone was so very broken that it was beyond repairable. Unfortunately, it needed to be removed. The ADL staff did a great job on my surgery and helped me as I recovered. I’m still learning to use my legs, but I’m learning very quickly how to get around on all three. I can walk around just fine and as my legs get stronger, I’ll be walking with ease! I’m a sweet boy and I like attention. If you visit me, I just may give you a kiss on the hand! Please give me a chance and visit me! I’ll be sure to try my best to win your heart over. I’m North Park Subaru’s Pet Star of the week! This means that my adoption fee is waived. Have a Safe Halloween Halloween is a kid’s delight. It’s a blast to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties, and most of all, eat candy. At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these tips (in anagram form) to make sure your little ghouls and goblins have a safe Halloween:

S – Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible. A – Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult. F – Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters. E – Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten. H – Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help see and help others see you. A – Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it when done to avoid skin irritation. L – Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. L – Lower the risk for serious eye injury by avoiding decorative contact lenses. O – Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. W – Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls. E – Eat only factory-wrapped candy. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook. E – Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. N – Never walk near lit candles or other open flames. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. If you’re hosting a party or expecting trick-or-treaters: t Provide healthy treats, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. Offer fruits, vegetables and cheeses to party guests. t Use party games and trick-or-treating as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. t Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause falls. t Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other open flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of reach of pets and small children and never leave them unattended. t Drive safely and watch out for trick-or-treaters.

About your newsletter... Article Submission Information

Do you have community news to share? Did your church, club, school, or neighborhood host a special event? Ready-to-print articles and photos are accepted at mlorente@mgmtco.com, with the 5th of each month being the deadline. (Please note articles are for community news only – advertising based articles must go through sales@neighborhoodnews.com).

Classified Ad Information

Classified ads are a free service. Please respect that we will do our best to get your classified ad in the most current issue. We must limit the space for classifieds so there is room for other community news each month. Once the deadline has passed or if the allowed space is filled, we can place your ad in the next month’s issue of your newsletter. The directions on how to place an ad as well as deadlines are listed with the classified ad section.
