Thoughts Entering the New Year As a new year quickly approaches, your Stone Oak Property Owners Association would like to thank you for being part of this special community. In the past year, many new businesses have opened, and have been welcomed warmly by our residents. We’ve also seen increased interest in our POA coordinated community events. This time of year we see and feel an increased sense of community which makes us proud. During this holiday season, take the time to welcome any new neighbors to your neighborhood, or stop by any of the new local community businesses as you celebrate with family and friends. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful management company staff, and an outstanding group of POA volunteers that ensure Stone Oak remains the unique community it is. Thank you to you too for being part of it. May thoughts of peace and kindness be with you and your loved ones during this holiday season.

Christmas Tree Disposal Information If you live in a Stone Oak gated community, Republic Services will pick up your tree whole for a $20.00 fee. You must call their customer service department in advance at 210-3042700 to schedule pick-up during the week of January 16th. Another option is to cut the tree in no more than 4-foot lengths, and bundle it in less than 10-inch diameter bundles, to be picked up at no charge on your regular service day. This would not require a call to customer service. The City of San Antonio is also hosting 2017 Christmas Tree Drop-Off Sites in several locations throughout the City, Saturday and Sunday, January 7th and 8th, and January 14th and 15th from 8:00AM to 1:00PM. Note one of the locations is Stone Oak Park. You do not have to provide a CPS bill to drop off a tree. Call 210-207-6428 or 311 with any questions.

Plan Ahead for a Colorful Winter Garden Author: Sarah Galvan, SAWS Conservation Consultant When planning a garden, it’s important to think about seasonal interest. Consider using evergreen plants along with a few colorful winter performers. See our list of recommendations. Missing warm color in the garden this winter? Don’t let the brown bring you down. When planning a garden, it’s important to consider seasonal interest. Be conscious of your plant selections and make decisions based not only on spring and summer color, but also on fall and winter color. If your yard is already planted, you may be wondering what can be done to liven it up. I personally like using evergreen plants along with colorful winter performers. Vibrant Fruit Try using small trees and shrubs that bear winter fruit like the flame-leaf sumac (Rhus lanceolata), aromatic sumac (Rhus aromatica), evergreen sumac (Rhus virens), Barbados cherry (Malpighia glabra), chile pequin (Capsicum annuum), possumhaw (Ilex decidua) or yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria). Winter birds love the fruits of these small trees and shrubs and their presence will bring a dynamic and beautiful element to the garden.
damianita (Chrysactinia mexicana), various Yucca species, sotol (Dasylirion spp.). Be sure to research the plants you want to bring into your yard before you go to the nursery to make sure they’ll work for your landscape. Things to consider are light and moisture requirements, location, etc. Colorful grasses You may want to add a mass of native little bluestem grass (Schizachyrium scoparium). This grass has green to silver-blue leaf blades during the growing season and warms up in the fall and winter to a beautiful rusty, copper color. The inflorescence plays nicely in sunlight and it’s a larval host plant for several of the skipper butterflies. Before European settlement, little bluestem and other large native bunch grasses dominated much of Texas and provided forage for the American bison. Plant it in the garden, as it was most likely there before your home or lawn was. Whether your winter colors are always green like Florida or dreary like Fargo, winter in San Antonio is green, red, purple, and yes, maybe a little brown.

Happy Holidays! From your friends at the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District
This year has flown by and we hope you and your family have had a healthy and prosperous 2016. The Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGR) took many positive steps in increasing awareness of the or the following: Trinity Aquifer this year, and we are looking forward to a productive 2017 on behalf of everyone living and working in the District. Community Outreach - This past year, we updated our website, published the Resource newsletter each month, welcomed residents at our rain barrel workshops, received some great suggestions at our town hall meeting and began reaching out to potential partners around the District about collaborating on water conservation, education and protection measures. We have some great water conservation opportunities planned for next year and we would encourage you to keep watching our newsletter for those announcements. Clean, Abundant Water is Everyone’s ResponsibilityA quality, reliable water supply is the lifeblood of every community, and it is the responsibility of homeowners,

How You Can Help - The best way you can help conserve, protect and preserve the Trinity Aquifer is to be mindful of your water use each day. We will help remind you of those best practices through the TGR Resource and our Facebook page. Also, let us know if you have friends or business associates doing great water conservation work. We’d love to highlight them in the newsletter. Have a happy and safe holiday season. See you in 2017!

businesses and various water agencies to make sure excellent water is always available in San Antonio. Much of the water that is used in northern Bexar County outside of Loop 1604 comes from the Trinity Aquifer in addition to the Edwards Aquifer. In fact, the areas located north of Loop 1604 are located on top of the Trinity Aquifer and are included in the Trinity Glen Rose District. The Trinity Glen Rose District is responsible for ensuring that the Trinity Aquifer is protected and preserved for use by the community into the future. And as we’ve always found, well-informed water users are always the best allies in making sure our water supply is safeguarded.

Hi, I’m Susie Q I think it’s obvious that I haven’t been so lucky. I was found as a stray with trauma to my face that unfortunately resulted in the loss of my eyes. Thanks to the ADL hospital staff, I was able to recover and heal. I’m still learning how to get around on my own, but I’m sure I will get much better as time progresses and as I become familiar with my surroundings. I’m a calm kitty that mostly likes to relax and nap. I like to be pet and will even start purring if I get lots of petting. I am grateful to have had ADL help me survive through my injuries, and now I’m ready to find my forever human who will give me the extra love that I need. Please consider opening your heart to a sweet cat like me and visit me as soon as you can! • • • • •

Plant Holiday Cheer to Last All Year Author: Benjamin Trevino, SAWS Conservation Consultant
Want to keep the holiday feeling in your landscape long after Christmas has passed? Check out this compact list of yuletide yard additions. In South Texas, the list of evergreen trees you can utilize as year-round living Christmas trees is limited. But I’ve rounded up a few I’d recommend to keep the yuletide feeling in your landscape all year through. Arizona Cypress The Arizona cypress is native to Texas and does well in our Central Texas limestone soils. It can be identified by its bluish-green or silvery foliage and reddish-brown bark that sheds yearly. This native Christmas tree is very drought resistant and can withstand our harsh Texas summers. It does require well-drained soils and prefers to reside in areas where it can get full sun. It grows in a pyramid shape and can be 30 to 45 feet tall with a width anywhere from 15 to 20 feet. The Arizona cypress is a beautiful tree for your landscape that you can decorate and use to celebrate the holidays every day of the year. Aleppo Pine The Aleppo pine is an evergreen that is well suited for the San Antonio area. As with all pines, it requires a full sun area with well drained soils. These characteristics make the Aleppo pine a great drought tolerant tree to add to your landscape. At maturity, the Aleppo pine can grow to be between 35 and 50 feet tall and have a rounded canopy with a width of 25 to 40 feet. Italian Stone Pine/Umbrella Pine/Stone Pine The Italian stone pine is best known for producing one of the key ingredients for pesto — yes, pine nuts come from the cones of this tree. Although it’s not native to Texas or North America, it does flourish in our area. This pine prefers well drained soils and a full sun environment. The Italian stone pine has a high drought and heat tolerance and can grow to be anywhere from 45 to 60 feet tall with a width of 35 to 45 feet. One of its most distinctive features is its symmetrical dense canopy that resembles an umbrella. This is one of the more popular living Christmas trees you can purchase in your local nursery. Junipers Here in South Texas, we have the climate that will allow some Juniperus family members to prosper — ‘Blue Point’ in particular. This tree is very drought tolerant and requires an area with full to partial sun and well drained soils. At maturity, the ‘Blue Point’ is approximately 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide. This living Christmas tree would make a charming and festive addition to your yard. If adding an evergreen to your yard for a pop of color or to maintain that holiday feeling 12 months of the year, consider some of these. Hardy, drought tolerant and evergreen, you can’t go wrong.
