DIY Water Leak Audit - Find, Fix Water Leaks Water leaks can waste a ton of water and dramatically increase your water bill. Neither one of those things is good for your household, or the community’s water supply. But, there are some simple ways you can check your water system to make sure it is water tight and operating the way it should. Take a look. First stop…your water meter. It is typically located near the street, in a rectangular box on your property. Be careful when opening the lid as there may be bees or bugs inside. To test for leaks in your plumbing system, turn off all indoor and outdoor water use activity (sinks, dishwasher, sprinklers, etc.). Lift the lid from the meter and look for a small red diamond- or triangle-shaped dial on the meter face. If this is spinning, you have a leak. Your water meter is a great leak detector because you can see the dials showing you if there is any movement of water through your meter. If you find that you have a leak, here are some of the likely culprits. Your toilets will leak at some point, so you should get in the habit for checking these fixtures. In fact, water leaks account for approximately 12% of all water use in the average American home, and the toilet is one of the most likely places to find them. Put a few drops of food coloring or other dark-colored liquid in the tank. Don’t flush. Wait 10 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, there is a leak in the toilet mechanism. Or, you can flush the toilet then mark water level in tank with marker or a pencil. Check the tank after 10 minutes to see if water has fallen below mark. If so, the leak is coming from the flush valve. Here is a great site to visit if you are dealing with a leaky toilet http://www.planitdiy.com/how-to/plumbing/how-to-repair-a-leaking-toilet/ Outdoors, an irrigation system with its many in-ground valves and sprinklers heads can waste water and leak. Leaks in your irrigation system won’t always show on your meter due to their separate anti-siphon shutoff valves. To find irrigation leaks, walk your irrigation lines. Check for unusual wet spots, leaky or broken sprinkler heads, and use your meter to measure total irrigation use. If you use another type of sprinkler, you should locate all hose bibs (outdoor faucets) and check for leaks and drips. Replace washers if there are any leaks. If you own a pool, look closely at the filter, pump, heater, and pool fill valve(s). Check the ground for moisture. Turn the pump on and off, looking closely for spraying water when the pump is turned off. Pools are meant to be watertight but sealants will deteriorate while other parts of your pool shift and settle or just plain wear out. Pools can leak through any of the fittings or accessories, plumbing, or even right through the shell. It is important to repair leaks, not only to save water, heat, and chemicals, but also to prevent undermining a pool’s structural components and washing away fill dirt. TGR also offers a free, in-home water consultation to residents living within the District boundaries. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. You can read more about the TGR public meeting and the District at TrinityGlenRose.com. And check out our monthly newsletter, The Resource, to stay up-to-date on District events and water-related topics! Stone Oak - September 2016 - Vol 21 No 9

SAWS WaterSaver Coupons are Here!!! By Juan Soulas Whether you want to reduce the amount of grass in your landscape or just spruce it up, our WaterSaver Coupons can help you make water-saving changes to your landscape that, once established, will look great for years to come. All you need to do is remove 200 square feet of grass and decide if you want to replace it with drought-tolerant plants or a patioscape, or both. Fall 2016 applications will be accepted September 1 - October 31. The 2016 fall edition of the Landscape Coupon allows you to create the backbone of your landscape or add to it. There are 15 trees and 10 shrubs for you to choose from. For the purpose of this coupon, a landscape’s backbone is at least a 200-squarefoot bed composed of two (2) small trees, such as desert willow and Mexican olive, and five (5) shrubs such as cenizo and sago palm. If you’ve been thinking of creating an outdoor living space for lounging or entertaining, the Patioscape Coupon may provide you the incentive to finally build it. The coupon is limited to the purchase of the feature item, your choice of flagstone, pavers or stepping stones, which will comprise the patioscape. Customers must purchase enough of the feature item to cover at least 80 percent of a contiguous 200 square feet. Remember, the coupon is only intended to offset a portion of the total project costs. Because all irrigation heads must be removed from the area where the coupon will be placed, homeowners with automatic irrigation systems must schedule an irrigation consultation to qualify for a coupon. The consultation can be done prior to the application
Stone Oak - September 2016 - Vol 21 No 9
period. If the changes to your irrigation system are extensive, you may qualify for an additional incentive via the Irrigation Design Rebate. That will be explained at the end of your consultation. To schedule, email us or call 704-SAVE. Of the two coupons, the landscape coupon is the most budget friendly. The patioscape coupon will more than likely have a larger out of pocket expense. With either choice be sure to plan, design and budget wisely. It’ll make your project’s success a lot easier. Since this program was introduced back in 2013, thousands of SAWS customers have transformed or started transforming their gardens 200 square feet per coupon at a time. If you’re a past participant, you know how easy it is. Minus the sweat from the installation, the reward is a beautiful, diverse water-saving landscape. If you haven’t participated because you find making landscape changes challenging, this an easy way to start. A Bit on Butterflies By Craig Hensley, Park Interpreter, Guadalupe River State Park, and Emily Weiner, TGRGCD No doubt during the past month many of you noticed the abundance of small, brown butterflies flying across the roadways throughout our region. Each fall, if rain conditions in west Texas are right, there is often a large migration of a species of butterfly known as the American snout when the desert hackberry (the host plant for the caterpillars of this species) leafs out following August rains. Needless to say, this butterfly’s population exploded this year with the result being a migration numbering in the millions with many meeting their fate on the grills and windows of our cars. Along with the snouts, there were a number of other butterflies species in the mix - two yellow butterflies known as the lyside sulphur and the large orange sulphur. The lyside is a pale greenish yellow medium-sized butterfly while the orange is larger and either yellowish or whitish – despite the name, only the inside of the wings show the orange, by the way. Amid all this chaos, you may have also seen a few larger butterflies, including the black and metallic blue of the pipevine swallowtail and the beautiful black and yellow giant swallowtail. Both the pipevine and giant swallowtail are regulars to our area. And to top everything off -a couple of monarchs have been seen; their migration will commence in the upcoming weeks.
Which leads us to a bit more on monarchs and the oft-mistaken for the monarch -- the queen butterfly. In September, the vast majority of large orange butterflies are queens, a butterfly that, like the monarch, also feeds on milkweeds. Queens are typically a little bit smaller and are a bit of a darker orange than the monarchs. Note also that the white spots on the wings are not surrounded by black on the queen. If you are really fortunate you may also find caterpillars of one or both of these species of butterfly, especially if you have milkweed growing in your yard! There are a couple of things to look for when trying to figure out whether you are looking at a monarch caterpillar or a queen. The dead giveaway is an obvious difference - the presence of extra “antennae” along the queen caterpillar’s body. Monarch caterpillars will only have two sets, one on each end. There are differences in the color pattern on their bodies as well, but it is a lot easier to look for those extra filaments. Most of us know the vital role milkweed plays in the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, but what may come as a surprise are the equally important nectar sources used by the adults. Some of these plants are disregarded as unattractive “weeds” and mowed down without a moment’s thought! But spend a little time watching these plants and you will be blown away by how many pollinating visitors stop by! Happy butterfly watching!
