APRIL 2015
From The Property Manager The Stone Oak Aesthetics Committee and the Board of Directors have asked me to update you on the status of our POA water conservation projects. By agreement with the City of San Antonio, our POA maintains 11 miles of medians within the boundaries of Stone Oak. The turf on these medians had been irrigated primarily with traditional spray heads and rotors until 2007 when the POA developed a plan to reduce our irrigation water consumption. These efforts have significantly accelerated over the past three years. To address the turf irrigation aspect of the plan in 2013, the POA Board of Directors targeted 8.5 miles of the total 11 miles of medians for conversion of turf to hardscape where appropriate, while converting the remaining turf to a more effective and efficient irrigation plan. To date, we have completed these efforts on 5 miles of the targeted 8.5 miles of medians. In 2013 we requested SAWS disconnect 5 of our water meters. In addition, we have capped 1,514 sprays and rotors. Many of the capped sprays and rotors were no longer needed in the areas converted to hardscape. Under the remaining turf we have installed drip irrigation using the Rain Bird and the KISSS tubing products. Our intent is to continue the implementation of our plan in the Fall of this year. During the next few months our Board will continue to monitor and evaluate this ongoing project to assure our objectives are being met. Our goal is to maintain the health of the turf, eliminate runoff into our streets and gutters, and further reduce our water consumption beyond the 60% reduction achieved over the last three years. We are looking forward to realizing these benefits while also educating the community by setting an example in water conservation.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 4th the Big Springs HOA held their 5th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. They had over 200 “Hunters” and just as many adults watching the activities! In addition to the Hunt, there were hotdogs & nachos for everyone, plenty of games to play and prizes to win, a bounce house, face painting, and a visit from the Easter Bunny. The day ended with one of the residents favorite activities: The Egg Toss. Participants managed to “toss” 126 fresh eggs to each other.

Girl Scout Early Bird Around the Corner Submitted by: Risa Weinberger Girl Scout Volunteer
It may be the end of the school year, but for Girl Scouts, it is Early Bird registration time. Girls and parents will register through the new ebiz website. It’s also a time for in-coming kindergarteners start asking to join Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts is for girls in kindergarten thru 12th grade. It’s also for adult volunteers. As the largest organization for girls, the only way to create new troops for new little girls is to have adults volunteer to be troop leaders. What people don’t realize, is the fun the adults have as leaders. There’s camaraderie and sisterhood among the adult volunteers. The volunteers are not left on their own. There is training and resources for adults so they know how to run those first meetings. Also, there are monthly meetings that bring leaders together to help network and learn about other Girl Scout programs available that the troop leader does not have to plan. So if you have a new kindergartener who would like to join Girl Scouts, or girls in any other grade level, keep in mind that Girl Scouts is not just for the girls. New troops will be forming in August and September. Watch for Girl Scout membership information notices the first couple of weeks of school. For more information, contact the Girl Scout office at 210-349-2404. Ask for the Yellow Team.

Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District Water Conservation Audit Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your continued help in reducing demand on groundwater resources. We have enjoyed very appropriately-timed rains this fall and hope they continue throughout winter. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. As you can see from the US Drought Monitor, areas to our northwest remain under Extreme to Exceptional Drought. As we move into summer and see increases in temperatures and lawn irrigation, we will be see increasing pressures on our groundwater resources.
Please contact us at 210-698-1155 with questions, or to schedule a free in-home audit! To learn more about Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, please visit us at www.trinityglenrose.com.

Monarch Butterflies Are on the Move! By Monika Maeckle
Monarch butterflies left their roosts in the Oyamel forest of Michoacán, Mexico on March 24 — their latest departure on record, according to citizen science organization Journey North. And they’re already showing up in San Antonio, laying their first generation of eggs on local milkweeds. The late launch of the 2015 season suggests that the butterflies will have a good year. Because of Texas’ unique position in the geographic path of the Monarch butterfly migration — the first stop in the spring and the “funnel” to Mexico in the fall — the Lone Star State has been called the most important state to the iconic butterfly migration. They make initial migratory stops in South Texas to lay the first generation of eggs in the multi-generation migration exclusively on Asclepias species, or milkweed. Although milkweeds are late, they are sprouting up in San Antonio area gardens, so the butterflies will enjoy sustenance for their offspring when their eggs hatch into caterpillars in the coming weeks. The challenge is that it’s almost impossible to find native milkweeds in commercial nurseries. Only non-native tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica, is widely available along with occasional butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa. Another challenge is that commercial growers often spray milkweeds with systemic pesticides that poison Monarch caterpillars when they eat the plant’s leaves. Clean, chemical-free, native milkweeds are in great demand and hard to find. So if and when you buy milkweeds, always ask and make sure it has never been sprayed. As a safeguard, I planted and overwintered the reliable tropical milkweed after slashing them to the ground in December as recommended. Detractors have their concerns, but I’m a huge fan of tropical milkweed and provide the host plant in my downtown San Antonio garden. The leaves are lush and ready for Monarchs. Monika Maeckle is a member of the Community Conservation Committee and authors the Texas Butterfly Ranch, a pollinator and native plant advocacy blog.

Protecting Your Home While on Vacation Vacation time will soon be here. Many will go away for a week or more and leave their homes unattended. This makes homes a target for criminals. While taking measures to prevent damage from power surges and broken pipes, it’s also important to take steps to avoid damage from someone breaking in and stealing your possessions: • Lock it Up to stop break-ins at any time, lock all windows and doors. Almost ½ of all break-ins happen without the use of force. If you have a deadbolt lock, use it. Secure sliding glass doors with strong dowels, two-by-fours, or steel bars placed in the lower grooves. Don’t forget to lock your garage as well. • Ask Friends or Neighbors to Keep an Eye on Your Property. Ask them to take in newspapers and mail, or have those deliveries suspended while you are away. Arrange for your lawn to be mowed. Give your neighbor or friend a key to your home in case of an emergency that requires someone to go inside. Give them your itinerary and contact information. Show them the location of the water main shut-off in case a water pipe bursts. • Avoid Posting Vacation Plans on Social Networking Sites. Complete strangers have access to this information on the Internet. • Notify Police That You Will be Away. Ask them to drive by your home on their patrols to make sure everything looks secure. • Leave Curtains Exactly as You Keep Them When You’re Home. Changes in your regular routine may alert thieves to your being away. Keep expensive items out of sight. Expensive jewelry can be placed in a bank’s safety deposit box. • Don’t Leave Lights on Throughout Your Vacation. Lights blazing throughout the night may look odd, especially if that is not your usual practice. Instead, purchase a timer that will turn lights on and off automatically on a programmed schedule. • Stop Mail and Newspaper Deliveries. Papers piled up on your doorstep is a signal to criminals that you are out of town. • Unplug Small Appliances and Electronics. This protects them from power surges and saves money as well. • Remove Your Spare Key. Criminals know usual hiding places and will check all of them to find a hidden key. • Trim Shrubs and Trees. These are hiding places for criminals, especially around windows and doors. • Remove Items From Your Yard. Bicycles, lawnmowers, scooters, and tricycles are easy targets for someone to walk away with.

Toasted Quinoa Salad with Scallops & Snow Peas Ingredients: 12 ounces dry sea scallops, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, or dry bay scallops 4 teaspoons reduced-sodium tamari, or soy sauce, divided 4 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons canola oil, divided 1 1/2 cups quinoa, rinsed well 2 teaspoons grated or minced garlic 3 cups water 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup trimmed and diagonally sliced snow peas, (1/2 inch thick) 1/3 cup rice vinegar 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 cup thinly sliced scallions 1/3 cup finely diced red bell pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
Directions: 1.
Toss scallops with 2 teaspoons tamari (or soy sauce) in a medium bowl. Set aside.
2.
Place a large, high-sided skillet with a tight-fitting lid over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon canola oil and quinoa. Cook, stirring constantly, until the quinoa begins to color, 6 to 8
minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute more. Add water and salt and bring to a boil. Stir once, cover and cook over medium heat until the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. (Do not stir.) Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Stir in snow peas, cover and let stand for 5 minutes more. 3.
Meanwhile, whisk 3 tablespoons canola oil, the remaining 2 teaspoons tamari (or soy sauce), vinegar and sesame oil in a large bowl. Add the quinoa and snow peas, scallions and bell pepper; toss to combine.
4.
Remove the scallops from the marinade and pat dry. Heat a large skillet over medium-high until hot enough to evaporate a drop of water upon contact. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons canola oil and cook the scallops, turning once, until golden and just firm, about 2 minutes total. Gently stir the scallops into the quinoa salad. Serve garnished with cilantro, if desired.
