The Hills at Sonterra Marches to a Different Beat! By: Sharon Meyer Area Representative, The Hills at Sonterra
It’s becoming a tradition! The Second Annual Parade, Picnic and Pool Party was hosted by The Hills at Sonterra Homeowners Association’s Social Committee (led by Tracy Brawner, Shanika Velez, Jennifer Coury, and Magda Reynolds). These awesome ladies put together a GREAT party to celebrate Independence Day in The Hills! After walking, riding decorated bikes, and pushing strollers in 100 degree weather - up and down the rolling hills - families were given an opportunity to speak with the firemen of San Antonio Fire Department Station #46, take selfies and photos with the firemen, and climb into the cab of the engine to have their photo taken behind the steering wheel of the BIG red truck. The roaring sound of the engine, and occasional siren and horn brought residents out to the curb to cheer on the revelers. Children and adults were given flags to wave; bikes, strollers and children were decorated in red, white and blue. For nearly ten minutes, Officer Robert Mount from San Antonio Police Department did a presentation on taser guns (an enlightening experience!) and handcuffs. Needless-to-say, he drew a crowd of big (adults) and little kids with lots of questions! After the catered BBQ, residents were given tickets for door prizes provided by J. Alexanders, Nothing bundt Cakes, Bowl & Barrel, as well as glow sticks and summer baskets put together by the Social Committee! But, it wouldn’t have been a GREAT parade without our local Fire Department, San Antonio Police Department, and Sonterra Security ... and last, but not least, our sweet and sweaty residents! Thank you to all who participated! If you haven’t heard about The Hills at Sonterra, it is a gated community within Sonterra/Stone Oak, conveniently located just north of 1604 between 10 and 281. The Hills consist of approximately 167 families that enjoy a community pool, two story clubhouse, playground, and BBQ pits in the shade. I love living in The Hills! Stage 1 is Back……What Does It Mean? The hot dry weather has returned and with it, stage 1 restrictions have returned. What does it mean and how does it affect you? 1. Landscape watering with irrigation or sprinkler is permitted only on your watering day before 11 AM or after 7 PM (midnight until 11 AM and/or 7PM until midnight). 2. Hand watering with a hand-held hose, drip irrigation, soaker hose or bucket is permitted any time of day. 3. Washing impervious cover such as parking lots, driveways, streets or sidewalks is not permitted without runoff to avoid water waste. 4. Water waste is prohibited at all times. Allowing water to run off into a gutter, ditch or drain or failing to repair a controllable leak is considered water waste and could lead to a citation being issued. 5. All fountains are allowed. These rules will continue until there is an announcement in the newspaper that Stage 1 is in effect. The SAWS Conservation Department staff still maintains that turf only needs once/week watering so we are suggesting that those customers with irrigation systems keep their controllers set for their watering day so that when Stage 1 restrictions are
again declared, they will not have any worries about whether their controllers are set correctly for the restrictions. As always, you can check for watering recommendations and other timely tips at www.gardenstylesanantonio.com and you can contact us for a free irrigation system consultation. You just might qualify for a cash rebate for making changes to your irrigation system in the process by participating in our Irrigation Design Rebate. We want to hear your opinion about drought restrictions. We would like to invite you to participate in our survey and tell us what you think. Again, congratulations! Your hard work as conservation advocates and adherence to drought restrictions in the past have allowed us to come out of drought restrictions for the near future. Should the weather return to hot and dry, look for Stage 1 restrictions to return. Donna Fossum SAWS Conservation

Before the Bell Rings:
Advice for the Parents of Latchkey Kids
As boys and girls throughout the community sharpen their pencils and get ready to head back to class, it’s important to ensure they have a safe school year. Here are some tips on how your family can be proactive and avoid potentially harmful situations:
With a new school year underway, many parents and caregivers fret about latchkey children who spend time on their own before or after school. According to some estimates, more than three million kids under 12 are home alone at least part of the day. That’s inevitable given the number of single-parent households and families in which both parents work.
Back to School Safety
• Make sure your school has your child’s updated emergency contact information. Write down any specific instructions that should be followed in case of an emergency, and have the school keep them in your child’s file. • Talk to your child’s teachers before classes start and alert them to any medical issues your child has. Also, explain to the teacher what he or she should do if the medical issues arise—such as an allergic reaction, asthma attack or seizure—and provide school personnel with emergency medication such as EpiPens® (Epinephrine Auto-Injectors) and inhalers. • Help your children memorize important phone numbers so that they know how to get in touch with you and other trusted adults. Also, make sure those numbers are programmed into their cell phones, or provide them with a list of phone numbers that they can keep in their backpacks or wallets at all times. • Let your children know exactly who they can go home with after school if their regular ride can’t pick them up, and make sure they know not to accept rides from people who aren’t on the list. • If your children will be walking to school, walk the route with them several times before classes start to make sure they understand traffic laws and can walk the route on their own. Also, find a friend or sibling they can walk with, and make sure they always use the buddy system. • Show your children which houses in the neighborhood they can go to in case no one is at home after school.
We all want our kids to be safe and secure. Here are some basic tips to help make sure your kids know how to handle being home alone: • Have your kids check in with you or a responsible adult as soon as they come home. They can call your office phone or your cell phone. If you are unavailable, they should leave a message. • Set up guidelines for answering the telephone. Let calls go to the answering machine, if available, unless caller ID indicates that a family member or friend is calling. • Establish clear rules for keeping doors locked and answering the door. In most cases, young children should not open the door unless it’s a family member or a well-known and trusted neighbor or friend. • If Internet access is allowed, establish standards and clear restrictions, such as setting up parental guidelines for websites and chats. Also remind children that talking to strangers is just as bad an idea online as it is in public. • Make sure your child knows how and when to call 911— an important reminder for all of us. If you see anything suspicious or threatening in our community, call the police immediately.

The Animal Defense League
Hi, I’m Peaches There’s good reason why they named me Peaches because I’m oh so sweet! I love attention so much that I’ll immediately greet you by rubbing by body up against your leg. I’ll probably even start arching my back to encourage you to reach out and pet me. I’m not too big on playing with cat toys, I’d rather lounge near a window and cat nap. If you’re looking for a sweet cat to keep you company around your home, then I’m sure I can be that cat for you! Peaches is a very sweet girl that would be a great addition to your home. Peaches is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to meet you at the Animal Defense League located at 11300 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, 78217 or visit her pet profile at ADL’s website at www.adltexas.org. Keep Your Backyard Bug-Free... Naturally Summer is the time for barbecue parties and sleeping under the stars, but bothersome bugs can ruin outdoor fun. Many people spray themselves and their lawns with chemical repellants to get rid of these pests, but there are natural alternatives that are environmentally friendly to your home and our association. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy a bug-free summer. Get growing. Planting a simple garden can do wonders in keeping the bug count down. Plants like garlic, radishes, marigolds, nasturtium, oregano, sage, rosemary, cilantro and mint are easy to cultivate and can make the area in and around your garden uninviting to the creepy crawlers, as they act as natural bug repellants. Pest-control never looked or tasted so good! Wet and wild. Eliminate stagnate or standing water in your yard; it provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Emptying used kiddy pools and fountains and refilling them with fresh water, cleaning gutters of leaves and other rainblocking debris and filling in puddles with dirt are just some of the ways to reduce the buzzing bugs in your yard. Going to the birds. Setting up a few bird houses in your
yard is not only a great way to enjoy the beauty of our feathered friends, but it also mitigates bug problems, since many birds love to dine on dragonflies, dung beetles and the ilk. Candle in the wind. When outdoors, ignite an all-natural bug repellant candle nearby to keep the bugs at bay, and enjoy the sweet smell of citronella, lavender, mint and other aromas that pests find repugnant. Brands such as BioSensory, Solay, Melo and Yankee Candle have jumped onto the debugging bandwagon and offer eco-conscious candles. Light up the night. Many high-flying insects are drawn to light like a moth to the…you get the idea. So, why not install an elevated yellow bug light on your back porch or deck to attract those critters up and away from the ground (and you!) when you spend an evening outdoors. Of course, be sure to review your CC&Rs or talk with a representative of your neighborhood association to make sure your bug lights are in compliance with any rules.
Outdoor Water Conservation Tips Even though we use water every day, it’s easy to take it for granted. Just imagine how you would function without clean water. It’s everyone’s responsibility to conserve and protect water resources. The decisions and actions you make today truly affect our water resources for the future. The following suggestions will help you get in the habit of saving water in the great outdoors: • Get a rain gauge to measure rainfall. One inch of rain per week is generally sufficient for lawns and gardens. Supplement only when rainfall is inadequate.
(210) 695-8663
• Use mulch around landscape plantings. Mulch will help eliminate weeds and hold moisture in the soil.
Commercial & Residential
• Select hardy plants that don’t need much water. Native plants that are well adapted to your climate and soils will survive well without supplemental watering. Visit www. gardenstyleSA.com for lots of suggestions and ideas, as well as information about available rebates.
Landscape Maintenance & Construction Irrigation Installation & Repairs Tree Trimming
• Water during the cool part of the day to avoid rapid evaporation. Check www.SAWS.org to see allowed watering time frames, especially in drought restriction periods.
FAX (210) 695-8661 rmojarro@randclandscape.com 15761 Tamaron Pass San Antonio, TX 78253
• Raise the mowing heights on your lawn mower. This promotes healthier grass that can better survive dry periods. • When watering is necessary, water slowly and thoroughly. If you notice puddles or runoff, turn water off and wait for water to soak in. Also be sure your sprinkler puts water where you need it—not on driveways or sidewalks.
