Donation and Dumping Station Saturday, March 7, 2015 8:00AM - 1:00PM In the POA Parking Lot - 19210 Huebner Road The Stone Oak Property Owners Association invites you to take part in their popular Spring Donation and Dumping event. A truck will be onsite from Arms of Hope to collect your donated items, and the City of San Antonio will have a large dump trailer on site for your larger trash items. (The POA is unable to offer assistance in transporting items.)

With a new subdivision being developed on Hardy Oak, our office was alerted to the need of a new left turn lane- which would affect two beautiful trees that have long been under the care of the Property Owners Association. For those who may not be familiar with our efforts, the Property Owners Association has an Aesthetics Committee, made up of Board members, including a Master Naturalist, who oversee projects and the care of median landscaping. This in part involves the care of the hundreds of trees on our mediansone of the unique qualities of the Stone Oak area.

With conservation efforts always at the forefront, on January 27th, 2015, your Property Owners Association, in partnership with M/I Homes, took great effort to save the mountain laurel and large red oak. This project would not have been possible without the knowledge and professionalism of Oak Island Gardens, and a generous donation

by M/I Homes. Working together we were able to coordinate efforts to ensure the trees were transplanted to locations within Stone Oak where they could continue to thrive.

The mountain laurel was transplanted just north of Huebner on Stone Oak Parkway- on the median in front of Falcon Bank and Taco Cabana. The large red oak was also transplanted on Stone Oak Parkway- north of Hardy Oak, just after the Canyon Rim subdivision entrance.

This was a project beneficial to the entire Stone Oak Community, and we would like to thank all involved- Scott Lambria of Oak Island Gardens, Derek Milikien of M/I Homes, Mark Bird of the City of San Antonio, and Adam Trevino of the District 9 office.

As our New Year begins, the District spends quite a bit of time finalizing groundwater data from the previous year. The image above was retrieved from the US Drought Portal just after the start of 2015. While parts of our region have experienced a few appropriatelytimed showers over the last several months; we still fall within the “Moderate Drought” category. Rainfall totals for 2014 ranged from 26” in the west to 30” in the eastern portion of northern Bexar County with the majority of our monitor well network continuing to reflect downward trends.

Avoid Silly Mistakes on Your Tax Returns Tax time is fast approaching. Many of you prepare your own tax returns, so we wanted to remind you of a few common mistakes and offer ways to avoid them.

IRS instructions for preparing tax returns are quite useful and thorough. They can be a big help for doit-yourselfers. However, it’s the little things—silly mistakes—that most often creep into your documents and cause problems. Here are just a few tips to keep in mind: • Prepare your tax return as early as possible. Waiting until the last minute increases your chances of making mistakes. Give yourself time to gather documents or research details. Better yet, collect these documents throughout the year in a special file so you have them ready at tax time.

• Use the correct tax rates. Tax tables can be dense and difficult to read; use extra care.

• Fill in every line. If a line item on a form doesn’t apply to you, put a zero or a strike through where the amounts would be. That indicates you determined it doesn’t apply to you.

• Make sure all your documents are complete. Attach forms, schedules, supporting statements and explanations. If you need more space, attach separate sheets that are the same size and format as the printed forms. Transfer the totals onto the printed forms. Put your name, social security number and date on all extra pages.

• Rounding is OK. Round off all amounts on your tax return. Round up to the next dollar all amounts that are 50 cents or more. Round down all amounts that are between one and 49 cents.

• Pay on time. File on time. The quickest way to get the IRS’ attention is to pay your taxes late or file your return late.

• Reply promptly to all IRS inquiries. Ignoring the IRS invites trouble—you could be audited or have your assets seized.

• Ask another person to review your tax return to check your math and ensure that all fields are accounted for. Math errors are the most frequent mistake on individual tax returns.

• Sign the return. If you pay someone to prepare your taxes, that person must sign your tax return. But, you must sign and date your own tax return no matter who prepares it.

• Keep copies of your tax return and all supporting documents. You’ll need them next year, and you should keep them for another five to seven years after that before destroying them.

Spring Cleaning: Inspect as Winter Thaws Here in San Antonio we may escape the snow and ice, but we can benefit from Spring cleaning for our closets, and our homes. The steps you take now can help avoid costly maintenance and repairs later.

Here’s what to do inside and outside your home: • Inspect the roof and gutters.

Check the roof for damage; clear gutters of debris; a clog can lead to water damage.

• Check the HVAC system. Hire a professional to clean and service your system. You also should clean or replace filters; it’ll help ensure your system is running efficiently, keep energy costs in check and remove extra allergens from your home.

• Clean and repair driveways, fences, decks and patios.

Then repair boards, or fill any cracks, holes or gaps.

• Examine windows, doors and seals. Look for damage.

Sealants can crack in extreme cold, leading to water damage and drafts. Clean the window panes, drapes and blinds too.
