Winter Landscape Watering: How Much is Enough or Too Much?

As cooler weather sets in and homeowners watch their landscapes enter winter dormancy, many ask, “How much do I need to water my landscape this winter?”

While there is no perfect answer, consider the following: 1) Is it raining on a regular or semi-regular basis?

2) How deep is the soil beneath my landscape?

3) What kind of plants/grass is being watered?

4) Will my sewer bill be impacted by irrigation?

Normally, a good winter recommendation is to apply ½ inch of water to the landscape every 2-4 weeks because the grass/plants are not actively growing. However, a rainfall of ½ inch or more is enough to delay irrigation for at least two weeks in winter.

Soil depth is very important in the water needs of plants and grass for winter. Soil at least six inches deep or more will hold moisture longer, requiring less frequent irrigation or rainfall. Landscapes with soil less than six inches deep require irrigation or rainfall at least once every two weeks.

Shrubs and trees require less water than grasses in winter. If water is needed, use a hand-held hose to apply water to individual shrubs and trees and use sprinklers or rainfall for grasses.

Lastly, consider your sewer bill. Sewer bills are calculated based on water use during the winter averaging period from November 15 through March 15. The less water used during winter averaging, the lower the sewer bill for the following year.

Home and Vehicle Burglary Prevention Tips By: CEO, Eugene “Gene” Jones, DOCurPROP, LLC.

The average person typically appreciates the reality of “homeownership” but often is unaware of the pitfalls awaiting them when they become complacent or remain unaware of various steps that are available to help prevent their property from being burglarized. We tend to mistakenly believe that “It won’t happen to me”. Homeowners and apartment dwellers are usually unaware that San Antonio averages 11,000 to 18,000 burglaries a year (2000 -2013 FBI Uniform Crime Report). Vehicles also become lucrative targets when people are not aware of their surroundings.

Homeowners may use some common sense tips to make their home and vehicle more difficult to target.

Having two or three locks does little for the homeowner, if the locks are not used, when the residents are away or actually in the home.

Social media is a tool used by burglars and thieves to prey on those who advertise their location or intended vacation plans.

If your cell phone or tablet has a location feature, it should be turned off. When going on vacation, out of town on a short trip (even while at the movie or the mall), homeowners should refrain from letting family and friends know on social media when they intend to be away. Facebook and Twitter are great for keeping friends and family informed, but a recommended practice is to let people know about your trip after returning home. When away on vacation, or a short trip, have a relative or close friend “house sit”. This allows for the home to be actually “lived in”, giving the residents less worry and more time to enjoy.

Surveillance is a technique burglars use to “scope out” those who are unaware of their surroundings. It is suspected that burglars conduct surveillance on certain streets (blocks) in various neighborhoods, watching and waiting for people to leave their home for work or the store. Homeowners should be aware of their surroundings when leaving and report suspicious vehicles and persons to the police. After the homeowner leaves, the burglar may kick in the front or rear door in to gain access quickly, and do a grab and run. Or, the burglar may break a window, or enter through an unlocked one. For safety’s sake, do not confront a suspected burglar; call the police! When leaving, ensure that the garage door goes all the way down before leaving.

If a house sitter is not available, consider the feasibility of investing in an alarm system. Ask a trusted neighbor or family member to check the home on a daily basis. Have them collect and hold the mail every day and pick up newspapers, so it seems as though people are home. Mail and newspaper delivery may be stopped by contacting the post office and news service. Consider sensor lighting for the driveway, so that when an approach is made, lights are activated. Sensor lighting may be used in the rear of the home as well. Timers for a lamp or two may be used to turn lamps on and off on a pre-determined schedule, giving the impression that that the homeowner is present. Shrubs and bushes should be kept manicured and cut low, circumventing the opportunity for burglars to hide.

Vehicle thieves and burglars also conduct surveillance of restaurants, movies, stores, donation centers (such as Goodwill) in an attempt to spot people leaving articles in the vehicles. They have actually watched women place their pocket books under the seat or in the trunk, burglarized the vehicle, going straight for that item. Vehicle registration receipts, insurance papers and other documents bearing the homeowners address should not be left in the vehicle. Having addresses in the vehicle provides the criminal another opportunity to commit another crime at the person’s home. Most homeowners are unaware that the SAFFE Units at each SAPD sub-station provides residents with a free home inspection conducted by a Police Officer. Interested residents may contact their local sub-station to request an appointment.

Is Fresher Always Better?

4 Ways To Know Your Produce (BPT) - These days, when it comes to produce, the catch words are “local” and “seasonal.” Local and seasonal, like fresh and organic, can mean a lot of different things, according to Jim Gallivan, department chair of Culinary Arts at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Atlanta and author of several cookbooks.

Local. Local can be defined as having been grown less than a day’s drive from where it’s purchased. In general, local is preferable, Gallivan says. It lasts longer because it hasn’t spent days traveling across the country or the world to get to you, and less travel means less pollution and fewer wasted resources.

Seasonal. If you’ve ever picked your own strawberries, you know there’s nothing like that fresh-picked taste.

Today, you can get almost any kind of produce at just about any time of the year. Asparagus in December?

It’s shipped in from Peru, where it’s in season. Apples in July? They’re pulled from cold storage just for you.

But if it’s not in season, it’s not local, and that means it won’t have the great flavor you find in local fresh-picked produce.

Fresh. We tend to think we should always choose fresh.

And if it’s local and seasonal, fresh is usually better. But sometimes canned or frozen is a better choice, especially when you’re cooking the vegetables or fruit, as opposed to serving them uncooked. For instance, canned tomatoes - especially in the winter when they aren’t in season - are probably best. Gallivan says to remember that canned and frozen produce is typically picked and

Organic. Google the word “organic” and you’ll find hundreds of websites with as many variations of meaning.

By definition, organic produce has been raised without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, using sustainable agricultural practices. “Natural” is not the same as “organic.” Neither is “additive free” or “no preservatives.”

Moreover, there are different levels of United States Department of Agriculture Organic Certification. That means when you shop for organic produce, you need to be aware and read the fine print.

One other important influence on the flavor of modern produce, which is grown on huge farms and packaged in giant processing plants, is the trend toward hybrid varieties bred for looks, shelf life and resilience during shipping. Flavor is not generally a top priority. Gallivan says there are exceptions, and some large agribusinesses do produce flavorful, organic foods.

The bottom line for buying produce: Educate yourself. Know what is in season, what is grown locally and where it can be purchased, and how to determine if something really is organic.

Salt and ground white pepper, to taste Freshly grated nutmeg Ingredients: 2 ounces butter, unsalted 2 ounces olive oil 1 leek, cleaned, trimmed, thinly sliced 2 cups fresh spinach packed, or one 10-ounce package of frozen spinach, thawed and drained 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock 3 medium potatoes, peeled, quartered 2 cups half and half 1 teaspoon sour cream per serving Stone Oak - January 2015 - Vol 20 No 1

Directions: 1. Heat the butter and oil together.

2. Add leek and saute until soft.

3. Add spinach and stir.

4. Add potatoes and stock, bringing to a boil.

5. When potatoes are soft, puree all and return to simmer.

6. Add half and half and stir.

7. Season to taste with salt and pepper, garnish with sour cream and freshly grated nutmeg.
