FEBRUARY 2016

In This Issue: Stone Oak - Mega Community of the Year Award Earth Day Event - April 16, 2016 Household Hazardous Waste News From Republic Services T ips On Being a Good Neighbor

Stone Oak

is An Award-Winning Community! On Saturday, February 6th, at the San Antonio Community Associations Institute Gala, the Stone Oak Property Owners Association won Mega Community of the Year for 2015! Recognition was based on the coordination and planning of water conservation efforts, as well as landscape redesign, while still maintaining the aesthetics of the community, thus setting an example for all property owners. It also included recognition of the POA community outreach projects that assist in conservation and education, such as the Donation & Dumping Events, Shredding Events, Rain Barrel Workshops, and Arbor Day Events. This would not have been possible without the continuous hard work of our staff and many volunteers, especially our Board of Directors. Thank you to all who work hard to make our community a great place to live!

HOW TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR The following are some thoughts from a variety of sources on being a good neighbor. 1.

2.

Keep your lawn mowed and edged and your shrubs trimmed. If you don’t like yard work, consider hiring a neighborhood youth or a neighbor who enjoys yard work. Place your garbage in sealed bags to keep trash from falling into the street during trash pick up. If possible, wait to put trash bags/cans out until the morning to keep animals out. Pick up trash in the gutters, street, and yard around your home.

3.

Keep your pets on a leash and clean up after them. Be sure to let your dog in when it starts barking.

4.

Meet your neighbors- just go over and introduce yourself.

5.

Join your neighborhood association, read the newsletter, and attend board meetings to stay informed.

6.

Volunteer time to your community community groups, church, or school.

association,

7.

Adhere to community covenants and city code requirements – especially in your yard and when remodeling or adding to your home.

8.

Keep porches, yards and driveways free of toys, tools, trash, and clutter.

9.

Follow the speed limits within the neighborhood – in most cases 30 mph or slower.

10. Put your neighbor’s newspaper at their front door when you pick up yours – make a special effort if they are out of town. 11. Park your vehicles in your garage. If you must park in your driveway or in the street, try to limit the number of vehicles and the length of time they are parked there. 12. Watch out for safety of area children and other residents. If you see someone suspicious around, notify the police. 13. Turn on your outside lights at night to promote safety. 14. Try not to play loud music or have loud conversations in your front or backyard late at night. 15. Offer to help elderly, disabled, single parents, and people who live alone. By doing these and other neighborly acts Stone Oak will continue to be a great place to live!

WaterSaver Landscape and Patioscape Coupons Are Back! Frigid temps are behind us, just in time to scratch that get-outside-and-garden-itch — and partake in another round of WaterSaver Landscape and Patioscape Coupon programs. Once again, SAWS is offering two different coupon programs simultaneously. This is the perfect time to get those creative juices flowing and use either one or both of the coupons to spiff up your landscape! You can apply for up to two coupons in each program.

per program coupon. And, both coupons require that irrigation heads be capped in the area of work and grass be eliminated. • Patioscape coupons for customers with irrigation systems are valued at $200. For those without irrigation, the value is $100. Just like in previous offerings, the landscape coupon is valued at $100. The coupon will not cover the complete purchase of plants or hardscape so do plan on some out of pocket expense.

The WaterSaver Patioscape Coupon and WaterSaver Landscape Coupon will be available Feb. 15. Deadline to apply for both is April 30. An irrigation consultation is a requirement for both coupon programs.

There are so many variations to experiment with — from pavers, stepping stones or flagstone to a range of plants for sun and shade. Get out there, apply for those coupons and get your work done now so you can enjoy your outdoor living area come summer!

Stay ahead of the game and call 704-SAVE or email us to schedule your irrigation consultation now. One of our experts will come out and take a look at your irrigation system, and possibly offer other incentives for getting rid of those irrigation heads. New for this round of offerings, a cap of eight total coupons redeemed (combination of both programs) is in place. This means that if you have already redeemed eight coupons in previous years, you will not be allowed to apply for any more. A few things to remember for the coupon programs: • When planning for the patioscape, keep in mind that you are required to purchase 80 percent of the patio material. This equates to about 160 square feet per coupon. • For the landscape coupon, you’re required to purchase 15 plants from the plant list in any combination. Plants must be a minimum of 1 gallon in size and the landscape area must be mulched with organic or inorganic mulch material. • Like previous offerings, the programs require you to remove at least 200 square feet of turf Stone Oak - February 2016 - Vol 21 No 2
