MAY 2015

From The Property Manager It has been a busy Spring! We are grateful for the wonderful rain, and Stone Oak’s vibrant color is everywhere! Get out and enjoy it before the heat of the summer comes! As school comes to a close, please be on the lookout for children at play. Also remember, as the weather is nicer, more of our community is out walking, running, and biking. Please be alert and stay safe! On April 18th, the Stone Oak Property Owners Association sponsored their first free shredding event for the community. The event was an overwhelming success. Shred-It brought a truck and provided free shredding services for four hours. While some simply dropped off their shredding, others stayed and watched their documents go through the machine. Just like our Donation & Dumping Event, many asked for this service to be provided to the community again. Remember to continue to watch our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com, for upcoming events. They will be posted there first! Thank you to all who came out to take advantage of this new opportunity. We always enjoy meeting our property owners! You will notice a new space in our newsletter we are providing as part of our service to the Community for the ADL. In addition to being a no-kill shelter, the ADL also offers many volunteer opportunities. (Helps with those volunteer hours!) Spend your summer helping our furry friends! More information about the ADL is below. Have a great start to your summer, and stay safe! We are fortunate to have such a great community to live inthank you for being part of it!

About The Animal Defense League: Chartered in 1934, the Animal Defense League is a non-profit organization that is a true no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for these animals by providing needed medical care, including spaying and neutering. Food, shelter, and safety are also provided – along with compassion and attention. While maintaining a healthy and loving facility, ADL consistently works to find the best possible home for each resident animal. Supported by contributions and directed by a volunteer board, the League provides programs and services which strengthen the bond between animals and people. How You Can Help: The Animal Defense League promotes Responsible Pet Ownership. This includes the spaying and neutering of owned pets, annually vaccinating our furry companions and microchipping them to ensure their safety. The ADL widely encourages the community to get involved with our shelter by FOSTERING pets in need, ADOPTING a shelter pet, DONATING monetarily and VOLUNTEERING their time to help the shelter save more lives! The ADL offers all of these services and opportunities that are open to the community. Shelter Contact Info and Numbers of Interest: Animal Defense League of TX 11300 Nacogdoches Rd. Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District Water Conservation Audit Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your continued help in reducing demand on groundwater resources. We have enjoyed very appropriately-timed rains and would be thrilled to see them continue throughout summer. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. As you can see from the US Drought Monitor, despite these rains areas to our northwest remain under Extreme Drought with our District still categorized as abnormally dry. These areas contribute recharge to both the Trinity and Edwards Aquifers. As we move into summer and see increases in temperatures and lawn irrigation, we will be see increasing pressures on our groundwater resources.

Please contact us at 210-698-1155 with questions, or to schedule a free in-home audit! To learn more about Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, please visit us at www.trinityglenrose.com.

White Grubs and June Bugs: Lawn Party Crashers By Nathan Riggs

One of the signs that spring is in full swing is the incessant sound of male June Beetles (Phyllophaga spp. and others) crashing into the lit windows of your home at night. More commonly called June bugs, these beetles emerge in late March, April and May to lay their eggs in lawns. While adult June bugs are a big nuisance, it is their offspring – known as white grubs – that are the real pest. White grubs feed primarily on the roots of warm season turf grasses in June, July and August, causing massive damage and turf loss. How do you know if your turf is being damaged by white grubs? Here are some things to expect: 1. If your turf is dying and the sod can be rolled up like a carpet in the dying areas, white grubs are to blame. 2. If you can’t roll up your dying sod, chinch bugs may be the culprit. 3. If your lawn is suddenly overtaken by large flocks of birds pulling at the sod, you may have white grubs. If you pull up the sod and find white grubs underneath, any concentration at or above five grubs per square foot must be treated soon or extensive damage will occur. White grubs reach just over an inch long when fully grown and are usually found in a c-shape. What can you do to manage white grub infestations in your lawn? There are natural and chemical options available for every preference. 1. Beneficial nematodes: these microscopic soil worms can be purchased at local nurseries and watered into the lawn to attack white grubs, flea larvae, and other insects in the soil. They are harmless to humans, plants and pets. Soil must be kept moist for their survival. 2. Well-timed insecticide applications: there are many new products on the market that have very low toxicity to earthworms and other insects and have a long-lasting effect on white grubs. Apply these season-long grub control products in mid to late June for best results through the fall and lower numbers of adult beetles the following spring. White grubs can be a real nightmare for homeowners who value a real showplace lawn. Keeping an eye out for June bugs in springtime and checking the lawn for signs of damage will help you get ahead of the problem and reduce the amount of stress – and water – your lawn will require.
