Prep for

Summer

This is the season for undertaking major home improvement projects and tending your ever-changing landscape.

Maintain lawn and garden tools. Sharpen blades, change oil, and replace filters on the lawn mower. Make sure weed trimmers are in good condition. Oil garden tools and sharpen blades.

Inspect locks on doors and windows. Make sure your home is safe and secure. Oil any testy locks and install a home security system if desired. Consider installing outdoor lighting to increase security.

Inspect for termites and other pests. Inspect the basement or crawl space, eaves, and attic for termites, carpenter ants, and other wood pests. If you see signs of wood damage, call a professional exterminator. Look under the eaves for wasp or hornet nests. Handle wasp or hornet nests with care and call in a professional if necessary.

Primp patios and porches. Clean the barbecue and hose down brick or concrete patio surfaces. Replace any broken bricks; patch concrete cracks. Wash outdoor or screened-in porch floors. Plant annuals in pots, or replant existing planters. Oil patio doors. Bring out patio or porch furniture.

Complete painting projects. If you’re painting your house yourself, rent a power washer and wash your house first. Scrape off crumbling paint, smooth rough areas with sandpaper, and fill in damaged areas with wood putty. Choose the best paint you can afford. Schedule interior painting projects, too; warm temperatures allow for ventilation and quick drying times.

Build or repair fences. Repair any damaged areas of existing fencing and refinish as necessary. If you’re building a new fence, get at least three bids and look carefully at the increasing variety of fencing materials. Make sure your fence abides by local codes and doesn’t encroach on neighboring properties.

Inspect siding. Check siding and trim around windows and doors for holes, dents, and gaps. Repair with wood filler or according to manufacturer’s instructions. If your home’s siding needs to be replaced entirely, summer is the best time for this one- to two-week project.

Replace your roof. If you need a new roof, have it installed during summer’s warm, dry weather. Consider fire-resistant roof material if you live in an area prone to wildfire and your current roof is not fireproof.

Repair and seal driveways. Renew the surface of asphalt driveways with sealer. Repair damage to concrete driveways as soon as possible (this project may require a professional). Stone Oak - June 2015 - Vol 20 No 6

Looking for a volunteer opportunity this summer? Currently the ADL is in desperate need of volunteers in two specific areas: • Pet Smart Charities Everyday Adoption Center Volunteer: As an Everyday Adoption Center Animal Care Specialist you will work with animals and help provide clean and comfortable spaces for our dogs and cats while they wait for the forever homes. All volunteers at the EAC must be at least 14-years-old. Volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer over the age of 18. • Thrift Shop Volunteer: Our Thrift Shop team is looking for outgoing, professional, friendly, team players committed to helping The Animal Defense League, the community and the animals in our care. The Thrift Shop is an integral part in achieving the ADL’s mission. Positions Needed:, Volunteers Cashiers, Inventory and Customer Service. Grassology 101 By Mark Peterson, SAWS Conservation Coordinator

Although many a pundit in print and TV claim to have the secret to a beautiful lawn, the answer is quite simple and does not require expensive tools or chemicals. And, I am just the man to give it to you. Follow these simple rules and you should have a healthy green lawn that uses minimal water. 1. Select the correct grass type. Abandon the idea that you can have any grass species you want. The amount of sunlight determines your species. Ten hours or more of direct sunlight dictates Bermuda grass. Less than ten hours and you’re limited to zoysia and St. Augustine. If you have less than five hours of direct sunlight, then forget about a lawn. It’s not going to happen. 2. Mow weekly. Select at least one day a week as your mowing day and stick to it. Mowing weekly improves grass health and reduces weeds. Also, always mow high — 3 inches for St. Augustine, 2 inches for zoysia and 1 ½ inches for Bermuda grass. 3. Compost and aerate. This is the second most important activity you can do for your lawn. Of the two, composting is the most important and should be done twice a year. Aeration can be done once or even every other year. Both increase the soil’s ability to absorb water and oxygen, each crucial for strong root development. Strong roots means less need for nutrients and water. 4. Leave the clippings on the lawn. Grass is a “heavy feeder,” meaning it requires more nutrients than other plants. Leaving the clippings and adding compost in spring and fall eliminates the need for additional fertilizer most of the time. If the blades are not growing or are light green in color, then additional fertilizer may be needed. Apply only after April 15 and before November 1. 5. Water. Of course, I’m going encourage you to cut back on water. And by following all the aforementioned rules, you can dramatically reduce water usage to no more than once a week. The most important times of the year to water are spring and fall. Plants in South Texas are adapted to grow in spring and fall, not summer. Help them with their natural tendencies. No need for complex chemicals or chants. Select, mow, compost and water are all it takes to maintain a healthy, green lawn.

Top Ten Reasons NOT to Change Your Irrigation Controller By Mark Peterson, SAWS Conservation Coordinator

The rains last fall and throughout winter and spring have been plentiful and continuous. So much so that we can now come out of drought restrictions and mandatory irrigation times. After nearly five years of continuous watering rules, San Antonio landscapes look pretty good, lush in fact. Apparently once-a-week watering did not cause much harm and saved billions of gallons of water. We can certainly keep the current schedule on the controller without any ill effects to our landscape or water bill. Perhaps more importantly, if we maintain our once-a-week schedules over the course of the year, we may be able to stay out of drought restrictions for a considerable time. Of course, flagrant watering would likely return us to restrictions. But, there are other reasons not to change the irrigation schedule on our controllers. With respect and homage to Mr. Letterman, here’s my list of top ten reasons not to change the schedule on your irrigation controller: 10. You’ve got to find the controller first. 9. The garage is too hot. 8. Have to move the ladder, bicycles, wheelbarrow, Big Wheel, etc. out of the way. 7. Now, which buttons do I push again? 6. Can’t find my glasses. 5. Honey! The instruction manual is missing. 4. Almost double the historic average rainfall over the last 7 months. 3. Plants are obviously happy… why bother them? 2. What! Encourage more mosquitoes? And the No. 1 reason not to change the schedule on your irrigation controller… 1. A SAWS conservation consultant just set it for me, why would I change it? Leave the controller alone. You’ll have more time this summer to relax, barbecue and watch sports. Your landscape and checkbook will thank you.
