Spring 2015 Special Events –

A Great Success! On Saturday, March 7th your Property Owners Association provided two opportunities to the community – our Spring 2015 Rain Barrel Workshop, and our Spring 2015 Donation & Dumping Station event. Luckily the rain and cold gave way to some sunshine, and both events were a huge success. Thirty-three participants took part in the Rain Barrel Workshop presented by Texas A&M Agrilife. Representatives of SAWS and the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District were on hand to offer suggestions, answer water conservation questions, and present rebate opportunities. In the end, participants left the event with an understanding of how they could help in water conservation efforts, and took home a rain barrel. You can find out more about other education opportunities provided by Texas A&M Agrilife at www.AgrilifeExtension.tamu.edu. On the other end of the parking lot we had our Donation and Dumping Station event. The City of San Antonio’s Dial-A-Trailer Program provided a dump trailer with two employees for residents to discard large household items such as grills, furniture, TVs, appliances, etc. Many of our gated communities cannot dispose of these items curbside with their weekly trash, and therefore have to arrange for disposal. By coordinating this effort it helps decrease the possibility of these types of items being dumped roadside in our community. You should note Dial-A-Trailer is a free service available to communities within the City of San Antonio. You can find out more at www.SanAntonio.gov/swmd/brush/DialATrailer. A truck from the Arms of Hope organization was also on hand to accept donations of clothing, furniture, books, etc. These items benefit the Medina Children’s Home. They are always appreciative of the generosity of our residents. If you missed this event, you can schedule a free pick up through their website at www.ArmsOfHope.org. In the end, FOUR trash trucks carted away 11.2 tons of trash, and 2.92 tons of metal. In addition, the Arms of Hope truck was filled with generous donations from our community to benefit others. Many participants had to wait up to 20 minutes to unload their items, but all appeared grateful at the opportunity to clean out their garages, etc. If you participated in either of these events- thank you. It is exciting to see the community come together, and gives our staff an opportunity to meet the residents. If you missed these opportunities, please continue to watch our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com for upcoming events. As soon as future dates are approved, they will appear on the website calendar. Thank you to the City of San Antonio- Dial-A-Trailer program, Texas A&M Agrilife, SAWS, the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, Republic Waste, our employees, and most of all our Stone Oak residents for ensuring these events a success! American pet owners collectively spend tens of millions of dollars every year on veterinary care and over-thecounter medicines for their furry loved ones. But what many don’t realize is that many pet illnesses can be avoided by simply keeping the back yard clear of pet waste. Dog waste is more than just a smelly and unsightly mess. It’s also a breeding ground for infection— especially in dog parks and other areas where dogs frequently gather. Bacteria, worms and other parasites thrive in the waste until it’s cleaned up or washed into the water supply. Giardia, ringworm, roundworm and E. coli are examples of such inhabitants, all of which are commonly found in dog feces and are easily transferable upon contact. When pets become sick, contagions are often times passed through their deposits into their own yard. The longer infected dog waste stays on the ground, the greater a contamination becomes. And when this waste is not picked up, pets have a high risk of catching the infection over and over again. Roundworm, for example, is one of the most common parasites found in dog waste and it can remain infectious in contaminated soil and water for years.

• A surface level • A bubble level bar • A protractor to measure angles from 0 to 180 degrees • A ruler with both inches and centimeter readings • A plumb bob to verify the verticality of lines or walls

The best thing pet owners can do to help keep their four-legged friends healthy and safe is to pick up after them and to do so in a timely manner. Those who don’t have enough time to deal with the mess themselves—or simply don’t want to—should consider hiring a local pet waste removal service.

Once calibrated, the plumb bob, surface level and level bar also can be used as an inclinometer/clinometer by reading the angles on the screen. Available for $1.99 in both Apple and Android stores.

Please be courteous to your neighbors and their pets – there is NO poop fairy! Please pick it up!

This app turns your phone into the tools you need to complete your improvement project. It features:

Urban Gardening Basics As the bleak cold of winter finally breaks and signs of spring begin to pop up all around, thoughts of vibrant flowers and lush vegetables are on gardeners’ minds. For those green thumbs living in tiny quarters, an impressive garden may seem unattainable. However, many are turning toward urban gardening, bringing plant life into unique spaces and growing gardens in every nook and cranny. These miniature Edens bring great natural beauty and help reduce our carbon footprints. As more people move to urban areas, urban gardens are becoming more popular, and encouraging those who have never planted to go dig in the dirt to see what comes up. While urban gardening does have its challenges, we have a few tips on how to overcome them to bring your small garden into full bloom. Know Your Plot Before you go on a planting spree, take the time to plan out the logistics of your garden. Will it be in your back yard, on your porch, on the roof, on a window sill? Is your intended spot part of the association’s common ground? Check with the association before you start. How much direct or partial sunlight does that area get, and is that the right amount of sunlight for your plants? Is your space large enough to house the plants when they’re full grown? And, if not, do you have a bigger space where you can relocate them? Will you be doing container gardening, or will you be planting in the ground? What steps do you need to take to get your soil ready for planting? Answering these questions is important before you begin gardening, as the different environments will affect your plant life. Having a plan can help you avoid unnecessary chaos. Know Your Plants All plants aren’t created equal, and knowing which will best suit your urban garden is a must for robust growth. Often, urban gardeners will be restricted by space or the need to plant only

in containers. They will also need compact plants that can thrive in those conditions, such as herbs, tomatoes, peppers, marigolds, zinnias and the like. And be sure to know what your plants need, such as when and how deep to plant them, as well as how much light and water they need. Also, will they need to be started as seedlings under a grow light until they’re hearty enough to go outdoors, and what mixture of soil do they need to flourish? Being ready to address your plants’ needs is an important step in making sure they grow to their full potential. Know When to Transplant Container gardeners will need to be vigilant about making sure they transplant their plants into the right containers as they grow. If your plant is in a container that’s too small, the roots will become restricted, causing the soil to dry out quicker, so you’ll need to move your plant to a roomier home. Be careful, though, not to use too large a container, as the roots won’t be large enough to suck up all the moisture in the soil, which can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb in choosing the right size container is to make sure your plant is neither overflowing or dwarfed by the container, and that there’s a few inches of dirt that can be seen around the plant. So the next time your plants hit a growth spurt, make sure they have the right amount of space to live comfortably. Get Creative The best part about an urban garden is that you can set it up anywhere and make it anything you want. Your garden can be in places like your patio, your front door steps or anywhere else good sunlight hits—and the association permits. While these tips just covered the basics, to learn more about urban garden, go to www.gardenguides.com. No matter what your living area is like, if you’ve got a bit of imagination you can make an urban garden that’s uniquely your own.

Enchanted Rock

State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area sits on Big Sandy Creek on the border of Gillespie and Llano counties. It is 18 miles north of Fredericksburg. The Nature Conservancy of Texas purchased the property from Charles Moss in 1978. It later sold the 1,640.5-acre property to the state of Texas. Enchanted Rock opened as a state natural area in October 1978. It is a National Natural Landmark, and is on the National Register of Historic Places as an Archeological District. More than 400 archeological sites have been found in the park. All are protected, and 120 of them are designated State Archeological Landmarks. More than 250,000 people trek to the park each year to experience the magic of Enchanted Rock. In fact, it is one of the most visited parks in the state park system.

AREA HISTORY Humans have camped in this area for 12,000 years. One enduring sign of their time here remains: Prehistoric people ground or pounded their food on granite rocks throughout the park. They left depressions in the granite, called bedrock mortars. The Spaniards first explored Central Texas in the 1700s. They mounted raids against the Lipan Apache and attempted to colonize this area. They established a mission and presidio on the San Saba River in the mid1700s, and tried to establish a silver mine on Honey Creek near the Llano River. Germans and Americans arrived by the mid-1800s, drawn by dreams of having land of their own and tales of gold and silver. Stone Oak - March 2015 - Vol 20 No 3

Captain Jack Hays: Capt. John Coffee ( Jack) Hays was a surveyor and legendary Texas Ranger. While surveying near Enchanted Rock in 1841, Indians attacked Hays and a group of men. Cut off from the others, Hays climbed the rock and holed up in a depression at the summit. He fought off his attackers for three hours, before his companions came to his aid. Look for his historical marker as you climb.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS Enchanted Rock has fascinated humans for thousands of years. As a result, it has inspired many stories that endure today. Most of these are rooted in fancy rather than fact. Tonkawa Indians thought that ghost fires flickered on top of the dome. The odd creaking and groaning coming from the dome frightened them. But don’t worry! Geologists say that the dome creaks and groans as temperatures change. As for the ghost fires, the rock glitters on clear nights after rain. Scientists think the glittering is reflections from collected water or wet feldspar. One story tells of an Indian maiden who saw her tribe killed by an enemy. She threw herself off the top of Enchanted Rock, and her spirit haunts the rock still. Another romantic story tells of a young Spanish soldier who rescued his true love just as Comanches were about to burn her at the base of the rock. Once, the Tonkawa captured a Spanish conquistador, who escaped by hiding in the rocks. This gave rise to an Indian legend of a “pale man swallowed by a rock and reborn as one of their own.” The Indians believed he wove enchantments on the area. http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock ©Neighborhood News, Inc.
