how to get better sleep getting more restful sleep in a few easy steps Are you one of the more than 30% of Americans that don’t get enough sleep? I know it can be one of those difficult items we put last on our list but sleep is by far one of the most important components of our daily lives that carries into our productivity and overall mental health.

But if you don’t exactly know how to get a good routine down it can be pretty simple when you break it down and put it into practice. It just takes a bit of slowing down and getting refocused on what you need.

Set an ideal bedtime. No, not what you’ve been told but when do you want to sleep? Ideally you want to get 6-8 hours of sleep but what if you yourself don’t need the 8 total hours? Your brain really needs a few hours before you’re ready to shut your eyes. Be consistent with this time. Give yourself one week to schedule thirty minutes - two hours to wind down.

Some adults really enjoy hearing bedtime stories for adults. This could prove useful if you have a smartphone and you choose to keep it in your bedroom to charge. You can open up a podcast application or Youtube and just simply search for adult bedtime stories.

And like a menu, figure out what you want to add to your bedtime routine first to get your brain to get prepared for your brain to rest. Meditation can be as simple as just taking a few breaths slowly for a few minutes. There is no right or wrong way to meditate. You may notice emotions popping up or tasks that you have the following day, keeping a notepad nearby so that you can write anything that pops up. Getting the thoughts out of your head and onto paper could be exactly what you need to keep your mind from racing.

One really fantastic and easy change you can make is just turning off the lights in your space or dimming them if completely shutting them off is not an option. Doctors have found that turning down the light when the sun begins to go down can help your body prepare for the natural progression of sleep and rest that your body needs.

Consistency is key when maintaining this sleep routine. Try it out every night and let us know how it went. Good luck and sweet dreams.

Our council was founded on March 29, 1978. We have about 175 members and are active in many different ministries in our parish of St. Paul, including St. Paul Youth Group, Tongues of Fire, Men's Core ACTS, St. Vincent de Paul, and others. Our council is blessed to be supported by our St. Paul Knights of Columbus Ladies' Auxiliary. We meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month (currently via Zoom). The Knights of Columbus are a Catholic fraternity of likeminded men devoted to the service of our Church at St. Paul and our community. It is a wonderful brotherhood that will enrich your life in ways The Knights of Columbus 7265 donated over 200 winter coats at our Annual Little Daubers Toy Give Away. 3. Roll into balls. Roll into mixture into 1-inch balls.

4. Serve. Enjoy immediately! Refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 3 months.

TIP: If you have trouble getting the energy balls to hold together, I recommend adding in more peanut butter to make the mixture a bit more sticky. Or if you would rather, you can also just press the mixture into a square baking dish to make flat energy bars instead of round energy balls.

THE TRUTH ABOUT High Blood Pressure

Well there I was one day waiting at my dentist for my routine annual teeth cleaning. The nurse mentions my blood pressure was really high. I respond with the typical “oh, I just get nervous when I come to the dentist” but after about 30 mins of sitting there and not getting my diastolic number (bottom number) under 100 my doctor informed me I would have to see my doctor before she could do any work on me. This is where my journey with HBP (High Blood Pressure) started and it’s been a bumpy road. I want to share my personal struggles with this and some tips I have learned through this journey to help with my blood pressure.

WHAT IS “HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE”?

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. You can have high blood pressure for years without any symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. A blood pressure reading is given in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It has two numbers.

• Top number (systolic pressure).

The first, or upper, number measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.

• Bottom number (diastolic pressure).

The second, or lower, number measures the pressure in your arteries between beats.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? "While it might not feel like it, high blood pressure quietly damages your body over time — increasing your risk of developing serious medical conditions," says Dr. Nasir, Chief of Cardiovascular Prevention and Wellness at Houston Methodist. "It's why we call high blood pressure the silent killer."

That statement right there scared me. The silent killer? … But I feel fine? Many individuals in their 20s and 30s, myself included, feel that we are invincible to heart disease, stroke, and heart attacks.

The habits that we develop in our 20s and 30s have an immense influence on our quality of life and our health in our 60s.

HOW DO I LOWER MY BLOOD PRESSURE? The steps to lower your blood pressure aren't as painful as you may be thinking.

• Maintaining a healthy weight • Getting plenty of exercise.

• Consuming low levels of salt. Keep your salt intake under 1,500 mg/day.

• Limiting alcohol • Quit smoking • Eating healthy. Aim for a diet low in saturated and trans fats and rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

• Consider boosting potassium. Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure.

• Monitor your blood pressure at home and see your doctor regularly

• Reduce your stress. Chronic stress may contribute to high blood pressure. Take some time to think about what causes you to feel stressed, such as work, family, finances or illness. Once you know what's causing your stress, consider how you can eliminate or reduce stress. Try to: •

Change your expectations. For example, plan your day and focus on your priorities. Avoid trying to do too much and learn to say no. Understand there are some things you can't change or control, but you can focus on how you react to them.

•

Focus on issues you can control and make plans to solve them. If you are having an issue at work, try talking to your manager. If you are having a conflict with your kids or spouse, take steps to resolve it.

•

Avoid stress triggers. Try to avoid triggers when you can. Avoid people who cause you stress if possible.

•

Make time to relax and to do activities you enjoy. Take time each day to sit quietly and breathe deeply. Make time for enjoyable activities or hobbies.

•

Practice gratitude. Expressing gratitude to others can help reduce your stress.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients •

1 cup canola oil use a little

2 1/2 cups old fashioned oats

•

2 cups all-purpose flour

•

1/2 cup granulated sugar

•

2 large eggs

•

1 cup brown sugar

4 teaspoons vanilla extract

•

1 teaspoon baking soda

•

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate

•

1 teaspoon salt

Instructions 1.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silpat or parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer add the oatmeal, flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, canola oil, eggs and vanilla, beat until the dough is moist and all the ingredients are combined. The dough will be crumbly. Mix in the chocolate chips.

3. Using your hands clump together a tablespoon of dough. Use you hands to really squeeze the dough into a ball. If the mixture is not holding add 1 tablespoon more of oil. Place on prepared baking sheet.

If your balls are a little crumbly do not worry, they will come together while baking. Repeat with remaining dough.

4. Bake for 10 -12 minutes or until set and golden. These are best right out of the oven, so eat up!

Yes, vitamin D is incredibly important. No, you should not skip your routine of applying sunscreen every 3-5 hours that you’ve been out (without getting wet) and 2 hours (if you’ve been relaxing in the sprinklers or a pool. This article is intended for our dear readers 60 and over however we all know sun protection begins at an early age. The statistics show that less than half of older adults actually protect their skin when they’re outside for an hour or more on a warm/sunny day. We know that protection is key when risking your body to skin cancer. Unfortunately the numbers are rising in skin cancer over the ages of 65.

As we age, our skin gets thinner and more susceptible to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

However if we make a plan to make sun protection an everyday practice, we can significantly lower the risk of skin cancer. It can be incredibly easy to adopt a more skin friendly lifestyle.

Answer a few questions when going out for longer than an hour:

Am I staying in the shade?

Am I wearing a wide-brimmed hat?

Am I wearing clothing to the ankles?

Am I wearing a long-sleeved shirt?

Am I applying sunscreen 5 minutes before I leave?

Am I applying sunscreen 3 hours after I last applied the sunscreen?

I know many of these can be difficult in our Texas climate but look for clothing that is lightweight and breathable like cotton or linen.

The best part is being in the sun and having a healthy level of vitamin D can be good for your bones, mood, improved cognition, and cardiovascular health.

What’s a good balance? Opt for 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight 3-5 times per day according to the CDC to get that optimal vitamin D and decrease your risk for sun cancer all at the same time.

We can still enjoy the gifts of the sun without risking skin cancer.
