owdy and greetings to all our readers, dear friends and colleagues. As the fall show 2021 approaches I know well how giddy everyone (including the staff at Show Daily) gets because this show is what all of us have spent weeks and months preparing for.

I’m sure you will enjoy giving the magazine a read during your down time.

An abundance of kudos to our staff because their efforts are the reason this edition shines. They visited with many new friends, some of whom we feature in this issue. Those include The Turk, Don the iconic Straw Man from Florida. Lance Arron from the Guadalupe River Gallery and also the good folks from the newly developed venue called 303 in Round Top. Another features first-time shopper, budding novelist and fellow junker/ collector Mark Edwards.

A couple other stories I did not assign, but were the staff brainchild, include the reprise of an article from our number 3 Show Daily, circa 2002. It’s a simple explanation of how Suzy and I ended up here in Texas after our 10 year chapter in Key West. “Aaah to be young again.”

The other unauthorized tale is from our energetic, prolific reporter Lou Christine, who is also our long time sales manager, a writer, novelist, play write and astrologer soothsayer.

Who else better to tell in a nutshell the whole Show Daily saga from before its inception?

In this story we officially recognize the unofficial name of the Show Daily—the Book. For more than 40 seasons both clients and Show Daily readers has been referred to as the Book. Folks call the office asking “hey can I still get into that show book?” “Mam, can I still get an ad in the daily book?” and in the fields “hey Roberto, are you still doing that book?”

As this edition comes to fruition, I have realized that for the first time, even with hardly any sales personnel out and about in the fields for the spring show, most of our ad orders for this fall issue have come in by phone or email, and occasionally a random check comes in the mail asking to repeat an ad.

I have much to say, but have been given very little space to say it. But you can read all about it on pages 17 and 22 for your cultural edification or just a chuckle.

As I find myself with much more past than future, lately I wonder how much change we will see not only in our publication but, also in the Texas Antiques Week phenomenon, which is still going strong and with new blood pouring into the experience.

Investors are quickly snatching up raw land and existing successful older venues. Call it the new guard. We believe the shows will get better with time and soon Round Top will be the shopping and entertainment mecca of America’s collectors. No doubt, that’s what the brokers are gambling on, as well as us the little guys!

What started as purely an antiques fair over 50 years ago will soon be a Seasonal Wonderland Destination for shoppers of everything old, new, quirky and esoteric. For foodies, partiers, people watchers, dancers, fashionistas…and designers and the list goes on.

I won’t go into the problems and shortages this show has, but guys, its Texas country life, and it is the very best three-day getaway for city folks living within a couple hours of four of this state’s biggest metropolises. A couple new publications to my chagrin attempting to mirror our efforts began a few years ago, and now I welcome them. We Continue on page 20

What this place needs is a map!” Then Suzy added, “And it needs a good helpful guide with scheduling to help people get around, find what they’re looking for. while managing Mexico City’s Language Labs sales team, and started a family with his first wife and son Roberto Jr. Always a voracious reader and learner, Alvarado, back in the ‘70s held onto aspirations to perhaps start up a Latin American version of Playboy. That dream didn’t manifest, but owning a powerboat to travel the seven seas did, until his launch ran aground off of Key West, Florida.

oberto Alvarado sat at his desk putting the final touches on the latest issue of Show Daily, issue #43. In many ways Roberto looks like the same guy I met over 25 years ago, but then, same as me, he isn’t. We both have aged going from robust tough guys to little old men and more like shrinking hombres than fine aged wine.

It’s been a long haul for the Mexican born in Guadalajara and raised in Detroit. There was high school, where he was a subpar student. Shortly after graduation, Uncle Sam called his number.

Even though Roberto wasn’t a citizen, he was caught up in the net and the next thing you know, he’s a GI wearing combat fatigues, stationed in Vietnam serving with distinction. As he tells it, “I felt mission bound” and besides, he felt obligated to follow most of his buddies from the same graduating class.

After the war, Alvarado returned to Detroit and involved himself in a number of businesses north- and south-of-the-border. There was the butcher shop he purchased just out of the Army, and the auto glass replacement shop in Houston, then he returned to Mexico, attending The University of the Americas,

His next venture, “Roberto’s Patio,” was a Mexican restaurant with a sign for tourists that read, “Hemmingway never ate here.” That’s where he met Suzy Kirchberg, the love of his life, whose experiences in many ways paralleled Roberto’s when it came to reading and writing as well as the appreciation for vintage antiques and craftsmanship.

By happenstance, the couple, on the move after closing Roberto’s Patio, happened to show up in Warrenton-Round Top by accident in the early ‘90s.

At first Suzy and Roberto embraced the opportunity to sell folk art and other treasures out of Mexico, but their scope broadened as they witnessed the show branching out in all directions.

Even seasoned antique shoppers attending the hodge-podge of tents were losing their bearings roaming the fields and grounds with dealers having no real addresses as the show blossomed. At that time, there was no cell phone service and the internet did not exist yet. Roberto once said, “What this place needs is a map!” Then Suzy added, “And it needs a good helpful guide with scheduling to help

admits Roberto. “We’ve always operated without a safety net and in the early days, one slip, one missed issue, one of anything negative, and we were out of business, yet we proved to all we could swim upstream.

Roberto says, “Getting good help has always been a challenge. You don’t find too many people who can take off or dedicate a couple of weeks a year trudging the fields, talking to dealers while selling ads considering the small population living here.”

Nevertheless, Show Daily under the guidance of Suzy and Roberto not only prevailed but also flourished. A little over three years ago, Roberto lost his Suzy, at 50, who was the glue, the hinge, the workhorse and voice of reason. It A&A Glass Inc. “There were a lot of doubters,” Roberto says. “Howz, some Mexican and his lady friend from Vermont going to relate to the local folk of Fayette County?” was commonly lipped. Other cynics cropped up for a myriad of reasons.

In those days the couple were based out of Guadalajara and the schlep north of the border was challenging in many ways, including locally printing a then small magazine in Mexico in English no less.

Even many of Suzy and Roberto’s close friends doubted they could pull it off. Further challenges arose when trying to explain to folks that, hey, they needed to pay for their ads upfront, and that the couple would be back in six months from Mexico with folks’ ads displayed in the next edition of Show Daily.

Too often they heard, “Sure, right, like you’re really going to return with my ad in that book of yours?”

Well it happened, and it has continued to happen consistently and continuously for all this time.

Suzy and Roberto produced this fine magazine filled with in-depth articles associated with the trade, schedules and glossaries of all the events taking place at each show, along with tasty tidbits composed by their talented cadre of writers.

Roberto gathered the reins and assembled what human resources he could, to put together the next number of issues and prove to the naysayers that Show Daily was more than a pretty face and a great cover. More than anything he has done this for our Suzy, strongly sensing she is looking down and checking on us all to keep the Show Daily experiment alive.

He frankly states he’s not sure what to do these days. Roberto’s in his 70s and has had a number of health challenges. He could walk away with the money that has been made. Show Daily’s healthy continuance is what he’s concerned about. He would like to hand it off, but he wants to place it in secure hands, hands that would manifest the same care for the show and the dealers while the stories remain positive and informative. He genuinely desires someone local, who speaks the lingo and has the outstanding skills and courage to run the world’s very best Antique Show magazine, Show Daily (a.k.a.

CitizensTruck “A novel way to give back”

itizensTruck” a vintage, 1948, Chevy, Road Master farm truck refitted with a cabin added to its rear, is the symbolic-namesake of a non-profit benevolent organization spearheaded by, Houstonite, Kyle Buthod. Kyle, originally from Kansas City, Missouri, has had a diverse career since arriving in Houston in 2012 from oil, to coffee, to media, ministry, and now to full-time ministry and entrepreneurship.

Buthod is the hinge connecting those importing Guatemalan and El Salvadorian coffee that have come to represent an enterprising pathway for upstart purveyors who are like-minded and and the various non-profit causes that reap the profits. He believes it is about people and always has been. This truck was not only manufactured for people—those working on farms—but now seven decades later is serving people and supporting people.

For CitizensTruck being at the Warrenton Show is a home-coming of sorts. The truck was rescued from a rusty existence and probably a junkyard ending. Originally manufactured in Detroit, the truck served as a loadmaster truck, hauling farm equipment and heavy items. Decades later, it was converted by a Michigan based church into a food truck to serve the homeless. Later, it was sold and hauled to Round Top, and soon thereafter ended up tucked away inside an antique shop in La Grange. Finally in 2020, the truck made its way to Houston.

CitizensTruck is a local business supporting an incredible cause—100% of all proceeds go to local nonprofits. Every time you buy an item or rent the truck, you’re supporting people and supporting local—not only because the truck is local, but all vendors that supply the truck are local!

Some of Buthod’s local supporters, aka: the “We Are” team, aware of what he was seeking, steered him to the heap. Buthod, says, right away he recognized the potential to restore the tin lizzie. Since the refit, CitizensTruck serves as a do-good coffee-wagon. There you can buy freshroasted Central-American coffee and other eclectic treats and know the profits fund charitable causes.

From The Editor, from page 13 need many more like y’all to carry the message that there’s no other show in the world quite like this. Proudly I declare that “Texas Antiques Week Extravaganza” is the best. “Don’t miss it...don’t miss it …don’t even be late,” sung to the tune of “State Fair” the theme song from a favorite musical of mine circa 1962 with tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein and featuring Ann Margret, Pat Boone and Bobby Darin.

We think a promotion committee of field owners should be formed to gather a collective effort to buy bill boards up and down the Texas highways leading to the Round Top-Warrenton area. After a survey we undertook recently, we discovered most people in these big cities have never heard of this twice yearly event. Yet we still get a couple hundred thousand visitors every year. I leave you with that thought dear readers.

As for us, we will be set up at Cole’s field again this season--at least for a few days. Come by and say hey! After the shows, most know where we live. We’re local. I’m always there. You won’t see me at the local shuffleboard courts but Thursdays for sure I’ll be at my shuffle dance classes. I gotta stay nimble because no wise man would ever wish to be young again. Key West Florida Gypsies Land in Warrenton

A story from Show Daily number 3 for those who missed it

A

Hemingway never ate here

The early years before the birth of our publication. After seven years of entertaining tourists in our cantina, restaurant and antiques shop in Key West, Florida, my wife and I called it quits. I was eating and drinking too much and it was all I could do to keep up with those college kids who came for week-long party vacations in waves. My job, of course, was to delight them with tales of old Key West lore over drinks. A body can only take so much.

from pie safes to antique mirrors, prints, photos, carved ivory, and trinkets galore. By the time we got to the outskirts of Warrenton we had succeeded in depleting our ready cash. We were broke.

“But honey. I thought you had more cash.” “No, honey, you’re the caretaker of the petty cash fund.”

Now what?

So, we packed a twenty six foot Ryder truck, bid adios to our friendly island home, and left in search of slower pastures.

Groomed gypsies that we are, we decided to set up a tent at Renck Dance Hall and sell some trinkets We had a truck full of never-before-seen mud-sketched goodies from the exotic islands of the Florida keys: old ships wheels, brass stanchions, port hole windows, a stuffed macaw, a shark and even a dolphin. For Texans, this was surely as foreign an offering as it gets.

Since we weren’t in a hurry, we decided to meander through the good ol’ USA, taking any country road that pointed in a southwesterly direction. It was a cool, rainy day when we pulled onto Texas highway 237, off 290 West. The sign read, “Historical Market, 5 miles,” so we decided to take a look.

Approaching the intersection at Carmine, we were surprised to see so many big tops and people scurrying about with an air of purpose. “Holy Moley!” I exclaimed to Suzy.

“We hit the jack-pot, this is an antiques fair.”

There were lots of curious lookers but no takers. “ Why, shoot podner, what am I going to do with a stuffed parakeet?”

“Well amigo, by the sheer size of it, you can say that it’s a Texas parakeet— Jumbo size.”

“Well, by golly you’re right. I can put it in our bar.”

I was really lucky to sell that stuffed macaw, ‘cause it was starting to lose its feathers every time we shifted it from one place to another.

Off we went, hitting as many fields as we could. stopping every couple hundred yards to marvel at the varied offerings.

We had space in our truck, so we bought indiscriminately,

whimpered, setting down a six-foot trunk that she’d dragged from the truck, leaving swaths of mud on the ground behind her.

“Darling, why don’t you call me to give you a hand?”

Oh, that’s all right. I know you’re having a hard time as it is, struggling to hold down that overstuffed chair. Look what I found!” she exclaimed, pulling out a bunch of old spurs.

“But darling, that’s Mexican stuff.” Soon the floor was scattered about with old bits and branding irons, colonial locks and hardware from old Mexico that we had used to decorate our Mexican cantina in Key West.

“And those old chaps, tattered and torn, who’s going to buy that junk?” I complained.

“Hey, podner, how much for those two ol’ rawhide reatas?

That’s just what I’ve been looking for. Oh, and how about those ol’ Mexican saddle blankets?”

Before long we had sold everything from the trunk and my gal was back in the truck looking for more. From old Mexican movie posters to Pancho Villa pictures, we about sold everything that used to hang on our restaurant walls.

“Sure honey, sweetie-pie, parakeets on steroids get that big, don’t they?”

But my Vermont gal would have nothing to do with such high seas piracy.

She scurried after my first sale of the day to undo it.

After the show was over we sat down to count our money and figure out where to go next. It was pretty much a no-brainer.

“You know, honey, I got kinfolk in ol’ Mexico. What say we go down there and check it out? We can buy more of this stuff and bring it up to sell in the shows.”

All this happened many years ago. We’re still here twice a year, selling our Mexican goods in Warrenton. We’re still here twice a year, but working on the Book. □

“Where’s the bird?” I asked when she returned.

“Well, he said he knew it wasn’t a parakeet, but he loved the story too much to pass it up. He’s going to put it in his bar anyway.

Hey, you didn’t show him the two headed duck?”

Granny McCormick’s Yard Four Generations

R

oadside signage often has the mind wondering, just what happens there, as we pass by properties.

Over twenty-years-ago, when first viewing the Granny McCormick’s Yard’s sign on the brown-stained, wood-framed building on State Highway 237, in Warrenton, I peered deeper to the back of the property, taking in a more stately, white structure, a family home. I figured, that must be Granny McCormick’s real home me imagining a Whistler’s-mother-type rocking on a porch chair as she knitted away.

Facts are the McCormicks have occupied that property for over four generations. Betsy and husband Bobby reside on the homestead these days, it being the very house Betsy was raised in. Betsy provided me background about the Warrenton location. The front building was once a General Store named G. A. Alhrichs. The owner operator was shot dead by an intruder, and after that tragic incident, Betsy’s grandparents took over the property.

As the twice-a-year, Warrenton-Round Top experience blossomed, local land-owners began permitting dealers to place their goods in the front of their properties for a nominal fee, to sell to the folks coming and going from the bigger established antique shows up the hi-way in Round

Facts are McCormicks have occupied the McCormick property for over four generations Top. The McCormicks, especially Betsy’s mother, Bernitta, began accommodating dealers looking for a spot on the highway.

Fast forward to today, it’s Betsy, who once owned a jewelry store in La Grange, McCormick’s Gold Works—now closed—who has been honchoing the show for some years.

Even though the McCormick Show is not one of those behemoth venues, there’s quality in them there stalls.

McCormick hosts about 15 dealers, most of them for years, who by now, are considered family?

Betsey has witnessed all the changes, knows the drama, and has taken in with grains of salt the many opinions blabbered about from such growth. She says it’s hard to separate fact from fiction at times. No real gripes from

our Betsy though, she recognizing progress, and sounding like it’s been more of a hoot, as if she’s having the best of both worlds. Imagine, residing in a small, lovely, clean, safe, country-style community like Warrenton… and then twice a year it seems the entire world comes to visit her. Betsy marvels at the relationships she’s established—some folks have become friends for life—and all the learning about other cultures and peoples right smack in the middle of Warrenton. Museums and even the Internet don’t offer such first hand knowledge. It isn’t as if Betsy hasn’t been around the block or county, and she is no hayseed. She recognizes the vast diversity of the people she meets from the four corners of the Earth and then, she laughs, “They go home!” Betsy sounds as if she is blessed.

Betsy is enthused about the recent coffee vendor on the property. You see, for years an affable chap from Colorado named, Brad, parked his converted VW Bug and sold fresh ground coffee at Granny McCormick’s. The VW Beetle along with trailer became a mainstay,

and was depended upon, especially for early risers in need for a robust wake-me-up. Brad’s easy-going and friendly attitude, along with his fresh brew perked up most peoples’ mornings. Yet after years on the road, Brad became somewhat road weary so he and the Coffee Bug retired.

The void that the missing Coffee Bug created was enormos. But no worries! The sought-after and needed caffeine fix has been brewed up

by Roan Christina Shipp, who took Brad’s creative idea and manifested, “The Java Love Bus,” a converted VW bus providing coffee lovers a rebirth. Seems the Shipps family decided to continue the legacy of the Coffee Bug, serving rich and delicious java while duplicating the friendly atmosphere the initial bug created.

All and all, a visit to Granny McCormick’s Yard is an enriching experience. If fortunate and running into Betsy, one will find a welcoming country gal, mom and grand mom, wife and venue owner, with plenty of spunk and… she will head you in the right direction.□

Drifter on The Texas Trail

e met a nice fella, Mark. He hung out in our booth at Coles last Spring and just chatted away. He came back again and again and gave us a copy of his first novel. And the next thing you know we became fast friends, he bought a few trinkets from us and the next thing I know we have him here in Show Daily to share with our readers. Mark Edwards is a pretty cool fellow! - The Editor It’s 2018 and seventeen-year- o l d Salvador Jesus Gonsalez is on the run! Dallas police are bearing down on him, furious, incensed about his daring escape. He beat another man senseless. If caught it could cost him 25 years! He’s short on resources. He needs a breather, feeling more like a scurrying cockroach desperately seeking the security and comfort of the dark.

That’s the first image Mark J. Edwards paints in his debut novel “Drifter On The Texas Trail” while introducing his protagonist.

In the rest of, what might best be described as an “Episodic Adventure,” Edwards’ tally-hos readers as they accompany Salvador through much familiar turf spread out in the Lone Star State. The romp is chock with colorful characters who enhance the suspense and nudge Salvador on at an accelerated pace.

Edwards, whose dad was in the Air Force, flew around a bit before finally landing in Amarillo. Self-admitted, Mark wasn’t a model student. If it weren’t for an upstart church-sponsored community college, then jonesing-tothe-bit, to fill classrooms, Edwards doesn’t think he would have attended. Hey! Who needs school when you know everything!

But don’t you know, and even the writer Edwards, can’t put into words how he developed a sudden and ferocious hunger to learn! After attaining his degrees, the next 30 years consisted of him learning and doing some drifting, and learning more and then antique dealing, and more learning and adventuring himself around Texas—learning, as a teacher, learning as an athletic coach, a counselor. He continued the life learning lessons fully knowing that when you’re and while you’re ripe you rot.

There’s lots of that Texas “Let’s Keep Austin Weird” DNA bubbling underneath his spunk. bucks the system but gracefully merges between the lines seeing the trees through the forest in his own unique way and then being able to gather his thoughts and provide his inner truth.

A youthful 64, Edwards isn’t afraid to admit he’s in love with somebody named, Jan. Edwards sounds as if he cherry picks memorable events and plucks notable associations from his past and parenthesizes those rich characters and experiences by weaving them within the fabric of his story.

He describes landmarks throughout the State with a certain familiarity and flavor perhaps leaving various tastes in one’s mouth. Oh, I suspect there’s lots of that Texas “Let’s Keep Austin Weird” DNA bubbling underneath his spunk.

Edwards’ craft fully portrays Salvador as the young man under the gun evolving over a six-month period of time while juggling life on the lam. As if emerging from a stifling cocoon, Salvador experiences a mental metamorphosis of sorts, that leads and connects him with the ancient past and then, jettisons him to be staunchly fixed in the present to eventually embrace the wonders of commerce.

According to Edwards, “Drifter on the Texas Trail,” won’t end on the last page of the novel. Other adventures for Salvador are presently within the confines of Edwards’ mind, like pure Texas oil, still deep in the ground. He has two other sequels in mind. The second volume of what he hopes will be a trilogy is well under construction.

They call him Turk

he easy going, Talat Tekis, is referred to by most who know him as Turk, for obvious reasons.

Stemming from the nation of Turkey, Turk has resided in the States for a number of decades, and become part of the great American melting pot. After leaving his homeland, Turk lived on the East Coast, but for the last five years he’s set up shop and has settled in Round Top with his home and his “DJEM” (D-gem) headquarters right on Texas Highway, 237.

You won’t find Turk lipping, “Y’all come back now,” or “Bless your heart,” but he’s gotten somewhat downhome while merging with the community, and at the same time being a sought-after vendor for his wares at the shows.

Turk purchased and now has a second location as he has spread his horizons in the area. (More about that later.)

DJEM creates no waste or residue that would damage the environment Turk wants all to know his production company is nature and that DJEM creates no waste or residue that would damage the environment.

About that earlier “more about that later” and new horizons: Turk has further spread his wings by purchasing Bediko’s International Retreat, 475 FM 1291 in Warrenton.

Kwaku Bediko and his wife Barbara have owned and worked the property on FM 1291 for the past 20 years.

Bediko, the artist, and a beloved old-timer raconteur in Warrenton, confesses he’s getting up in age and has been busy with newer projects that are taking the lion’s share of his creativity time. At the same time he and Barbara have been spending more leisure time at their Belize beachfront property.

Turk’s early education, key contacts and memories about Middle Eastern culture have far from faded. With modern day travel he’s never that far from his roots and invaluable contacts. Those resources have enabled Turk to zero in on Turkish, Armenian and Greek vintage items, like rugs and carpets, urns, rare furniture, and even old parts all marketed by his company, DJEM Unique Ideas.

Turk and the Bediko’s have been friends for ages and a deal was struck between all parties, where as DJEM takes over the Bediko spread, while managing the enterprising taking place on-and-off shows. DJEM will also provide expanded accommodations for dealers or shoppers attending shows. A unique caveat struck by the all parties, is that the Bedikos have the right to reside on the property whenever they desire, for life!

Turk’s, DJEM, is not only an importer of fine vintage goods from that part of the world but now also produces custom-made furniture including Sofas and Chairs and of course—why not?—Ottomans.

Turk will be socillating between both locations during this fall show. DJEM will market their treasures from the Middle East at both locations, the one in Round Top and other in Warrenton. Look him up, he would love to meet you!□

“You don’t have to call me... Darling!!!”

W

hat shoppers attending this grand event might not realize is that for the 5,000 or so supposed dealers, as is in any enterprise, there’s lots of work and beau coup pressure. Depending on how far away the dealers come from, there is lots of planning.

Dealers pay a lot of money for expenses prior to arrival. There’s anxiety comparing the risks to rewards. For the most part, most do turn a profit or at least break even, or, hopefully, at least just have a good time.

The show can be brutal with the searing Texas heat often rising to over the century mark.

Return on investment is priority number one. Still, it far from all work and no play. The hardy groups of dealers have become ad-hoc families, keeping abreast of each other even during off-show. Over the years, despite recessions, 9/11, with the country at war, the dreaded “election year” syndromes, torrential spring rains and autumn hurricanes, along with suppressed crowds, nearby out-of-control brush fires, and other threats to the show including other strains of scary flu, the dealers continue to enjoy their stay at Round Top. Partying among dealers is standard, when there’s been enough sales and the nut is finally covered, the hillbilly in them begins to let their hair down a bit, calling for celebration! The last Saturday night, when the main venues bars, restaurants, and dance places closed, a happy troupe of folk might make their way to a then-deserted show tent and continue to party into the wee hours.

most of whom I’ve known for years. Beers and passed-around bottles of Crown Royal, and other benign party favors were shared. The mood was jovial and the next thing you know, a guitar shows and everybody began to sing, except me.

I have been coming to this show for over 20 years, twice a year. I tallied the nights. Can you believe I have slept almost two years of my life in Fayette County, so I’ve heard a great deal of Country and Westernmusic.

That very night I might have been in my early 60s. I have considered myself somewhat worldly and hip to events and trends, but when I heard what surely was a country-western tune, I had not the slightest recall.

“Well, it was all that I could do to keep from crying” Sometimes it seemed so useless to remain But you don’t have to call me darlin’, darlin’ You never even called me by my name.”

The tent was filled with folks from eight or nine states as each and every man and woman continued to sing along ‘cept me!

So this one night, or should I say wee hours of Sunday morning, I found myself with about 35 familiar folks, stemming from all over the nation,

“Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me And after reading it I realized that my friend had written the perfect country and western song And I felt obliged to include it on this album The last verse goes like this here

I certainly recognized those country music household names as the lyrics registered with me, as did the jolly inebriated country singing voices of my friends, I scanned the faces glowing in the candlelight. They were happy faces. A sense of brotherhood enveloped us all. The lyrics intrigued me but what continued to surprise me that each and every person in the room knew all the words.

“Well, I’ve heard my name A few times in your phone book (hello, hello) And I’ve seen it on signs where I’ve played But the only time I know I’ll hear “David Allan Coe” Is when Jesus has his final judgment day So I’ll hang around as long as you will let me And I never minded standing’ in the rain But you don’t have to call me darlin’, darlin’ You never even called me by my name” The song and the gathering and perhaps the warm cozy feeling in my innards after a few nips of the Crown Royal were having an impact. It was a moment you couldn’t buy a ticket for. Consider, me and the fedora, bunched into a field of Stetsons. I still remained aghast at how could I have never heard the song? The lyrics then took a side trip.

“Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song And he told me it was the perfect country and western song I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country and western song.

“I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country and western song. Because he hadn’t said anything at all about mama or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting’ drunk.”

The gathering taught me much about myself and how there is so much more to learn that substantiates a good life.

I’m still not much of a Country and Western fan but I found another song that intrigues me called “You’re nothing but a Coca Cola Cowboy.”

You see, this show is a lot more than dealers hawking their goods or shoppers looking for bargains. This whole happening is an education.

Newcomer to Round Top and Cole’s Antiques Show is...

Lance Aaron of Guadalupe River Gallery

ver the years, Lance Aaron has been a collector, buyer, curator and exhibitor of rare finds.

Having a long-time relationship with Roberto Alvarado, Show Daily’s publisher­, Aaron finds himself in Round Top Texas in 2021 exhibiting a portion of his Guadalupe River Gallery collection­­­­ as he transitions from a brick and mortar gallery to a new website brand called OldMexico.com.

“I was born into a family of collectors, going to flea markets, auctions, and Canton when we lived in Arlington, Texas in the 1970s,” explains Aaron.

His love for collecting began in boyhood when his father offered each of his children a twenty-dollar bill, and off each one went into the flea market to find their favorite item. It became a game to find the most interesting item, and a competition among his siblings as they would bring the items back to the family at the end of the day to review what type of item each of the children purchased. He fondly shares how, over time, each began to start focusing their finds into a collection of worth and value.

One of his first jobs was working for an early American auction house in Delaware, Ohio, called Garth’s Auction. Later, he was relocated by a leading design firm in Atlanta, Georgia, to domicile in Mexico City. In time, he and several Mexican partners acquired the Mexico operations. In Mexico City he married and lived for about fifteen years. In the long run it proved to be invaluable for him, as he worked with some of Mexico’s leading industrial and graphic designers offering marketing display and interior/exterior design services.

While his love for the cultural history of Mexico developed, so did his collection of Mexican fine and folk art, and his knowledge of artists and artisans from Mexico’s various regions. He soon became a dealer with an eye for rare finds for those seeking a treasure to add to their trove of Mexican art and even finding museum quality items for his own exhibitions.

Aaron says, “the 1930s polychrome decorated earthenware masterpiece displays the artistic creativity of the Tonala and Tlaquepaque, Jalisco pottery

producing region. It is a piece created following the Mexican Revolution, when the arts and culture of Mexico hit a golden era. This piece has an inspiration of pre-Columbian form with the serpent handles and tripod base. It has nice warm earth tone colors with exotic quetzal birds and flowers around it. The size and scale of it are also important—it is a museum piece. Few pieces like this were created.”

While in Mexico City, Aaron met the love of his life, a beautiful lady named Erika. He has been happily married with two wonderful children, Christian and Michelle, all of whom he moved to Texas with in 2007. As his smartphone buzzed with text from his daughter during the interview, she excitedly informed her dad that she was ready with her driver’s license! Aaron showed off pictures of his children posted on Facebook, both bearing the beauty and features of his lovely wife.

One of the fun finds Aaron brought to Cole’s Antique Spring 2021 Show was a sombrero of Miguel Aceves Mejia, the El Paso, Texas-born singer and actor known for his voice as “the king of falsetto.” Aceves Mejia held the distinction of being one of the first Mexican folk singers to travel the American continent and on world tours, which also took him to Spain. After the singer’s death in 2006 at 91-years of age in Mexico City, he was given the honor of having his body lay under the rotunda of the Palacio de las Bellas Artes (Palace of the Fine Arts) as he was regarded as a one of greatest Mexican figures of arts and letters (Wiki.) This sombrero is a true find and a collector’s item.

Another fun find for the musical collector of handmade guitars on hand at Lance Aaron’s Spring Show 2021 was the Acosta guitar circa 1940s that he showed me on his gallery Facebook page from January 27, 2019. The guitar was made by Guadalupe Acosta Guitars and had been hand-made by his grandfather Mike Acosta OFFICE: 979.249.4149

Aaron shared several pieces on his Guadalupe River Gallery Facebook page. Each piece showing his passionate relationship with his own family history from being a lineal descendant of a participant of the Trail of Tears to being a descendant of a participant in the American Revolution.

Such a rich family history and legacy of American art and history married with a knowledge and backdrop of both Mexican and Texas art and history makes this interview with Lance Aaron a special one for Show Daily.□

Don Agnello

“Marburger Farm Happy to get Don back”

One of a Kind” items is what Don seeks out!

D

on Agnello’s enjoys his sideline enterprise, but he says he’s never worked harder in his life. The supposedly retired, one-time metal-fabricator originally out of Buffalo, New York, and now based in Orlando, Florida, says his occupation these days is professional photographer and sculpture assembler.

Don has always been a collector of unique items. “One of a Kind” items is what he seeks out! For seven years Don has parlayed his seeking-out-unique-findings- hobby into a small business.

Don is taken by handcrafted articles showing the imagination­­­­, creativity, ingenuity and originality crafts people can manifest. Whether the piece represents peasant art, a utilitarian or decorative piece of furniture… it attracts Don’s discriminating eye.

I guess many who initially collect will tell you, there is eventually a “Come to Jesus” moment when they realize, “Hey, I got to get rid of some of this stuff or at least narrow it down!”

During his seven years of coming to the show Don has bopped around as both a shopper and dealer. He began showing his finer pieces at Marburger Farms and for this show he’s found himself back at Marburger, sensing that the Marburger shoppers lean to the nostalgia.

Defining breakthroughs took place back then, from lighting design, to Formica furniture. New items of the time appeared as sleek, minimal, trimmed down to accommodate all that was changing around them at a rapid pace.

New and improved was the motto.

Finally, Don has come up with a official name of his niche business. Guess what it is? Surprise! It’s “One of a Kind! 20 th Century Décor, Folk Art,” showing at Tent H October 26 th to the 30th . Don will be there.□

“They were once modern and perhaps happier times,” says the affable Don Agnello. He also mentioned that baby boomers, whose off-springs who may have left the nest (and who haven’t moved back home LOL) have newfound empty rooms or dens to convert into nostalgia HQs. Don senses much the same in himself by being attracted to that time period and dove-tailing that timeframe with his quest to scoop up the one of a kind particulars from that era.

Therefore Don’s gumshoe efforts to secure unusual pieces took a turn when he began to focus on early- and mid-20 th century items. Don picked-up on the notion that there’s a lot of nostalgia going on in America. He senses a strong desire to reflect on what many now perceive as a more carefree, simpler time (other than at any given moment we could have been nuked by the Ruskies). Yet the mid-century imbued a warmth embracing the cozy affects from “Father Knows Best,” to empty jelly, and peanut butter jars, that became water glasses, as a jolly Tony the Tiger touted, Frosted Flakes were “Great!” fortifying the much now-held perception of the ‘50s.

Don and Marta Orwig at

M

arta and Marta and Don Orwig are no strangers to the Warrenton-Round Top experience. Don says they’re into their 35th or 36th year. That’s over 70 shows. Orwig is not what one might call a theme collector, yet he has the reputation for carrying all sorts of neat stuff. He has an eye for the unique and unusual and sees value in lots of treasures that perhaps others have ignored. Don is the first to say, knowledge has immeasurable values.

It’s stuff you don’t see every day or maybe never will again

Long-time customers—who are not dealers or collectors—shop Orwigs “because they bring in nifty, stuff.” It’s stuff you don’t see every day or maybe never will again.

That always been the same modus de operandi, for the Orwigs, no matter if set up in Northfield, the Big Red Barn or most recently at Paul Michaels.

The Orwig name draws crowds and Don says he’s enjoyed almost every minute of it, hauling down goods from Northeast Indiana to show off and share with the hordes that descend upon the twice-yearly show. Don knows the neighborhood and can easily separate the contenders from the pretenders. For his part, he says he’s been so fortunate. “All of the field owners I’ve had the pleasure to deal with have been just great and I am glad to say that today we are all friends.”

Don affectionately speaks of the Harpers, on whose property he has opened his own building that will now stay open Thursday through Sundays all year long. “I have my own building now and both Brandi and Kevin [the Harpers] seem to have the right attitude in my mind about becoming part of the community while aligning their operation with other tradespeople who also are dedicated to the business.”

There are a wealth of Round-Top-Warrenton experience all housed under the “303” logo. Most are not new dealers to the area, but seasoned and knowledgeable antique dealers. Orwig is fitted into the largest of the buildings, right out front. He also shows great confidence merging his and Marta’s knowledge with Brandi and Kevin—the experience being Kevin’s business know how and Brandi’s degrees in design and merchandising. Orwig envisions 303 becoming a mainstay show as time goes on.

Like the Harpers, Don sees he and Marta soon moving to the area since his store will be open year round but for now the Harper’s team will man Orwig’s until they move down permanently. Don wants all his friends and customers to know he’s now at 303 in Round Top.□

Catching the Spirit

he Harpers—that’s Brandi and Kevin—were cruising along with their Worn and Weathered vintage clothing line up Dallas way for a time and then, like what happened to a lot of other people, Covid hit.

Seems the entire way they were used to doing business was interrupted and with the shut down and strict rules, according to Brandi they were just spinning their wheels. But the Harpers were not stifled. Now the Harpers have also operated the Old Christmas Store, next to the Round Top Bank for years and have had a nice chunk of property they casually leased out to folks during the shows.

Yet with the new hurdles to jump etc., the Harpers made a command decision along with their partners, Lisa and Stephen Kaoury, who still reside up north.

Saying the word, the show is now called “303,” primarily because the address is 303 Washington, Round Top—or Texas State Highway 237, if you will.

The Harpers gave the new Show that name because they sensed it as more related to just where they are rather than making up some other name. As a couple they’ve showed for years at various venues—at Zapp Hall and Dillards Field. But the community of Round Top attracted them, and they were more or less looking to merge with a vibrant community, a town with identity like Round Top. Now they sense it’s the best move they’ve ever made—and without the hassles they had up north!

The Harpers are no longer commuters and The Old Christmas Store is now the permanent home of Worn and Weathered where they gussy up faded and well-worn threads to the degree they look fashionable, but not over the top.

Brandi and Kevin, are looking to be a vibrant part of the Round Top community and participate in the promotions that take place off-show that continue to put Round Top on the map in the light it deserves to shine in.

303 is made up of select and eclectic dealers, those with experience who will enhance the spirit of the show by displaying and selling crafts, antiques and vintage items that they’ve had procured for quite a spell. “Every dealer on our property has vast experience and are hands on,” says FACEBOOK: @SHOWDAILYMAGAZINE

They are very excited about the lineup of dealers who will be manning those buildings and out in their field, each with a story about their craft or trade looking to meet shoppers like you. □

allas-based company Brook Partners, led by Chief Executive Officer John Sughrue and Chief Operating Officer Jeremy Buonamici, acquired the twice-yearly Round Top, Texas, event from the Mebus family who led Marburger Farm for the past fourteen years. “They passed the baton of a show in great shape,” says Buonamici. “Tents are full, we are adding more dealer space, the staff is wonderful and ticket sales are strong. It’s going to be a joy for us and a fantastic five days of commerce for buyers and sellers.”

With expertise in event production and promotion, as well as real estate, Brook Partners produces the Dallas Art Fair and owns the 75,000 square feet Fashion Industry Gallery (FIG). In addition to producing contemporary high-end fashion trade shows, FIG is also a top special events venue in the Dallas Arts District, and the Dallas Art Fair, a high-end, thoughtfully curated international art fair hosted at FIG, is now celebrating its 12th edition.

Marburger Farm, with 43 acres of pasture, bluebonnets, and historic buildings, will be an exciting contrast for the multi-faceted company.

Long-time exhibitor Mary Lee Snuffer of Pennsylvania says she will arrive with classic

American furniture and paintings, as well as vintage lucite, chrome, and “all the building blocks for a great mix.” In business as Bedford on the Square Antiques for a quarter-century, Snuffer says that she keeps coming back to Marburger because so many of its shoppers “have learned the fine art of mixing the traditional with midcentury modern.” Adds Snuffer, “Brook Partners will bring new energy, new perspective and lots of new ideas; it will be very good for Marburger.”

New exhibitors Jake Moore and Daniel Schmidt of Austin, Texas, will bring a collection of rare antique globes, as well as such striking vintage taxidermy as a Grizzly Bear. A former museum registrar, Schmidt offers art that is “less obvious, by unknown artists but of great quality,” including six paintings of dinosaurs from the walls of an old children’s museum. Says Schmidt, “I’m looking for customers at Marburger who recognize objects that can stand on their own, regardless of who made them, and say: ‘This is amazing.’”

Missouri exhibitor Steve Ball of Horsefeathers Antiques has held back a pair of large cast iron console tables with green marble tops, as well as a Dutch inlaid early case clock, over seven feet tall.

And it works. Also in tow: art, jewelry and folk art.

“You only take really great things to Marburger, nothing mediocre,” says Ball.

“Our customers in Texas seem to like our eye and they trust us; it’s like meeting up with old friends.”

Suzan Dentry, an early Marburger dealer from Colorado, is eager to meet the new owners and to experience “the adventure and joy of the show.” She says that the collection she is bringing will be the best booth of her career, including paintings, 100 pieces of Victorian mother-of-pearl, silver, folk art and furniture— again, those building blocks for a unique mix. “So many of the great shows in America have been watered down or ended,” she says.

“This new chapter with Brook Partners is an opportunity to do it right and for Marburger to stand out, shine and thrive.”

About Twice a year, more than 100,000 The Round Top visitors descend upon the tiny, ‘Antiques and 90-person town of Round Top, Design Show TX,for the famous Round Top antiques and design fair, featuring thousands of dealers selling antiques, collectibles, home décor and fashion from across the globe. Celebrities, world class designers, buyers for global stores, hotels and restaurants and other home-design inspired shoppers flood the area.

The town and its surrounding communities play host as barns, dance halls, tents and fields become venues to showcase this wide array of goods. In the evenings, live music, food, and drinks take center stage to entertain the patrons who travel far and wide to experience the many shows. Every year, the Fall Show runs during the last two weeks of October and the Spring Show runsduring the last two weeks of March. A third, smaller show has begun to develop toward the end ofJanuary. California exhibitor Suzanne Fox will amaze with her ability to transport and unveil over two dozen iron and concrete urns, pots, benches and statues. How does she do it? “Whether I buy it in New Orleans or England,” says Fox, “We ship each piece directly to our storage near Marburger.

It never goes anywhere else.” With displays spilling out of the show’s historic Saloon, she will mix French planters, American weathervanes, and hard-to-find English Coalbrookdale cast iron with a mated pair of 1920s concrete swans measuring over three feet

tall. “Marburger is the highlight of my dealer life,” says Fox. “I’m looking forward to the new energy and new era.”

Jeremy Buonamici agrees. “I’m excited about the next five to ten years --- how can we improve the dealer experience and the shopper experience? How can we help Marburger evolve while respecting and maintaining the show’s heritage?” First up: a year-long celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary in 2022.

He’s a tough buyer but he brings the stuff

I keep and admire some items for a while yet if there comes a buyer I’m not apt to argue with a profit.

H

arrell Hough shows at The Big Red Barn during the Spring and Autumn shows. The San Antonian, reared in Mississippi, is known to be amicable, seasoned, knowledgeable, and loves making deals.

As a youth he proved to be outgoing, ambitious while quick on the uptake. Starting­­­­ at around 10 years-old Hough perched outside one-time, elegant southern­­­­mansions that became museums featuring household items coined “antebellum” (pre-Civil-War). Even at the tender age Hough was eager for action. He had already eavesdropped on the tour guides memorizing dates, tidbits and buzzwords about the contents of those relics of the past. Soon he’d be offering; “strictly for tips,” tours of his own, echoing what he picked up.

Hough says those days back in Miss-is-sip is where his initial interest into finery and craftsmanship became appreciated. He got further educated by scanning flea markets. During his late teens Hough began collecting (shame on you boy) photos, figurines and knickknacks of partially clad women. Yet scouring flea markets FACEBOOK: @SHOWDAILYMAGAZINE

while dealing in an arousing collection of girly keepsakes wouldn’t pay the rent. Hough immersed himself into the printing business but still continued to educate himself about the trade.

After moving to Texas in 1981, with his curious­­­ nature about local history, Hough became attracted to Texana and Mexican Folk Art. Thus he began in earnest. For forty years now Hough has established a selling and buying network with clients spread across the country and even across borders. He’s belonged to collectors clubs of all sorts and prefers the eclectic rather than indulging in a specialty. All of the above has created a slight dilemma. You see, digging little deeper into Hough’s wheeling and dealing mind-set, he freely admits he senses he could have an identity problem.

Seeking, restoring, displaying and moving items of value are what the man does for a living. Over time Hough has developed a keen eye and heartfelt appreciation for items that strike his fancy. But, he’s in business. What he acquires is meant to be sold. Hough does admit he possesses few items he’s kept for decades yet the romantic guy that he is, confesses he tries his darndest not fall in love with items. “I keep and admire some items for a while yet if there comes a buyer I’m not apt to argue with a profit.”

Hough has developed clients and peers in the business who specialize in a particular genre. He might be at a show in East Texas and eyeballs a copper horse bit at an attractive price and knows ole Jeb Haskins over in Uvalde is gah-gah over copper horse bits. He just might purchase the bit up sensing

carry his inexpensive array of smalls rather they be signage, mugs, drinking glasses, belt buckles etc. these days they’ve become items appreciated by millennials.

If not, there’s probably another buyer.

Every collector/purveyor/ dealer likes hitting home runs like the time Hough says he purchased a musical item, an old ukulele for 50 bucks and sold it a week later for 4K! But there have been times when swore an item might bring 10K, and then, ten years later while gathering dust he has finally bombed out the piece for fifteen hundred. Despite what his collector’s lusty, little-head yearns for, his sobering dealer’s big-head dictates, “It’s probably not worth the risk, so why chance it?”

Forget the romance! Hough prefers moving money. It’s “Turn baby turn! Most of his wide and varied inventory is for sale. His creed: Make alliances with other logical and clear minded dealers. Make your money when you buy!

Turn purchases into sales. Take the profit and invest it into something of more value. Be happy!

Still Hough finds himself up prior to dawn and might drive 60 miles to an estate sale. He’s a familiar friendly face at shows throughout Texas and New Mexico. He’s relied upon by peers to validate or even identify items they may have just purchased.

One is apt to find almost anything when visiting Hough at his Big Red Barn spot but these days he has been leaning­­­­towards textiles and folk art. Hough does profess the business is always in flux and when asked by this reporter if one was just starting out is there an area of collecting or marketing to perhaps delve into?

Hough was quick to say, “It’s a transitional business, fickle at times and trends can turn into dead ends, like baseball cards or the Beanie Baby craze.” Hough believes, like most mavens in his business that quality and value remain supreme. If at the Red Barn find Harrell; he’s a worthwhile stop. □

Antiques Off The Square

A

ntiques On The Square has a new name and a new historic location.Starting this fall the show will be known as “Antiques Off The Square — The Fayetteville Antiques Show.”

The new location for the popular Fayetteville event is the historic SPJST Hall on the east end of town next to the city’s baseball field. The show’s new home, a piece of Texas dance hall history, is less than a minute by car from the town square.

Completed in 1910 the SPJST Hall is a beautiful example of Texas vernacular style wood-frame architecture. “This wonderful building is over 100 years old,” says Lisa Stansbury, the event’s producer. “It’s perfect for our show. It’s an antique Texas dance hall. We’re very excited to be here.”
