“S

how Daily’s front-cover for the April 2020 edition says it all. For 20 continuous years, Show Daily Magazine has carved its own niche and has become an intricate part of Texas Antiques Week.

Texas Monthly coined Show Daily as the “Bible of the Shows,” Texas’ largest and perhaps the most successful antiques extravaganza in the United States of America and all its territories!

The waves of humanity that converge onto and through the corridors of these sixty-some venues are mind-boggling for new comers.. but for the old-timers, it’s business as usual. However, for the Show Daily staff and our long-time readers, publishing our 40th issue in our 20th year is a monumental milestone. Who would have thunk? Show Daily’s front cover honors Ms. Suzy, our Suzy Kirchberg, the matriarch and co-founder of Show Daily. The cover’s image of Suzy looking down on all of us might remind the readership how we wish to honorably memorialize Suzy, in the second year since her passing. For me it’s personal, “Suzy! I loved you for 30 years!” As did readers, advertisers, our staff and those who have loyally supported Show Daily since our humble beginnings 20-years ago. Suzy purposely remained behind the scenes. Most only heard the steady voice of the regal lady over the phone. She tirelessly appeased clients, put out fires, and painstakingly scrutinized every page of the magazine to ensure it to be perfect. When it came to customer relations, her take, “I’ll stand on my eye lashes to make sure they’re satisfied.” continued on next page... Boy, time sure does fly !

SHOW DAILY MARCH 2020

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Perhaps that is why we wish to elevate Suzy’s likeness during this momentous issue, an issue that Suzy was so looking forward to assembling but alas, our destiny for the last two years has been to go on without her.

www.showdailymagazine.com

And as for our younger and more energetic staff we are still tweaking some details even though they require very little help from Lou and I and are already shouldering all the responsibilities. Truth be told…without me as they no longer need direction and our long-time loyal advertisers respect that our sales pitch has never been to be pushy. Show Daily offers its advertisers germane to the trade editorials, pictorials and super service while providing enterprises opportunity for exposure. Originally structured by Suzy the aim remains the same, to please and ‘fess up to errors at times, then to do the right thing. We work at it all year long and remain geared up for the next 20 years.

Never the less the show must go on and honor Suzy’s business model at the same time. For 20 years Suzy’s, mine and Show Daily’s resolve is unchanged. Perhaps older and grayer I still can stand and sometimes walk with a limp but undaunted. Claudia, the one now behind the scenes

mack in the middle of the Cole Building is where Bobbie Schulte needs to be to keep her finger on the pulse of this busy show. For over ten years, Schulte has worked the building, and now plants herself in the middle as the reliable and affable keeper of the venue. When there’s about two-hundred booths, and almost as many dealers, all of a sudden they show up eager to man their Cole’s Building spot which they’ve marketed out of for a long time or that they recently reserved, waiving money to quickly leave a deposit for the next show, or paying up the balance for this show— SOMEBODY’S GOT TO KEEP TRACK! Then there’s the balancing and orchestrating anything while

handling a complaint about a wobbly table or getting someone to fix a backed-up porta-potty, or phone calls for Mr. or Mrs. Cole, Schulte has her hands full. Meeting people, especially antique merchants, Schulte said she marvels at their knowledge and diversity. “I’ve made good friends here at the Cole Building which I may not have ever had contact with if it weren’t for the show.” Schulte further voices, like many of us do who have been coming to the show for years, that twice a year it’s like an ad-hoc, family gathering, and she likes it. Off-show, Schulte attends to her garden, does church and volunteer work.

Dead Peoples Stuff has New Life by Lou Christine

A

sleepy field located right across Texas 237 from The Northgate Show and next to ExCess II has been given new life! Blue Bonnet Field in Warrenton has been purchased by Nita Hayden and her family, who operate the infamous Dead Peoples Stuff, previously at Zapp Hall. They named the new show “Stone Meadow, the Home of Dead Peoples Stuff.” After 31 years, Nita, son Chris, and daughter in law Michelle, have departed Zapp Hall. Of thousands of venues, in the minds of many, Dead Peoples Stuff is one of the most fitting and coolest names in the business. Nita’s mom Shirley, from Shawnee, Oklahoma, was a fixture at Zapp Hall and well known in these parts. She’d been an antique dealer for over 65 years. Hayden joined her mom and dad (Doc) in the business as they traveled the nation selling at shows.

Nita, Michelle, and Chris will be marketing items left by the departed at this show same as always. While known for also selling gardening items and plants, Nita says from now on they will just be carrying succulents. They will still carry an ample amount of inventory, including the primitives they’re known for; plus, they will have the increasingly popular custom and industrial lighting. And, of course, with the state of sure mortality, they will carry dead people’s stuff, and lots of it. The Haydens look forward to making Stone Meadow a vibrant field. Nita notes, “We have lots of room for more quality dealers and are open to taking reservations for future shows.” Call: 405-5669066 or email deadpeoplestuff1195@yahoo.com/

In the 80s, on their yearly circuit to the Hillsville, Virginia show, the Haydens befriended an elderly couple, Levin and Eva Smith, who were set up at the top of the hill. The Smiths flashed the sign, “Dead Peoples Stuff,” which attracted a lot of attention and brought in shoppers. Most get a good kick out of the name. The Haydens voiced how they admired the sign as much as those chuckling shoppers who often stopped in their tracks. One day, Levin strolled over and planted the sign firmly in the ground where the Haydens were set up. “Here it is. I know you like it so take the sign with you back to Oklahoma!” When the Haydens said they couldn’t accept it, Levin confessed that he and Eva were getting up in age and may not continue in the business much longer. Ole Smith remarked, “I’m just loaning you folks the sign on a 99-year lease. Then I want it back!” The Haydens enthusiastically embraced the clever name while marveling at the effect it had on those stopping by. “They take a lot of photos of it ‘til this day,” stated Nita.

Never down, Never Out By Lou Christine

T

he great Mark Twain is widely remembered for stating, “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!”

It is time that I bring an issue to its (sometimes ugly) head with the field owners, dealers, and shoppers, who attend this grand fair at WarrentonRound Top. In May of 2018, Show Daily lost its Suzy Kirchberg, who was Show Daily’s co-founder, editor-in-chief, dedicated wife, and biggest advocate of this show than anybody I’ve ever met. She was kind, extremely competent, and the voice of reason within the Show Daily family. Suzy kept the faith, even in the magazine’s earliest years; back when perhaps our greatest struggle to survive was the very start, when we operated without any sort of a safety net, and if we failed on one issue we were out of business. In the early days, our entire crew commuted from deep down in Mexico before we purchased our Rutersville Headquarters. At one point, the magazine was printed in Mexico, but 911 changed much of how we published Show Daily. Still under Suzy’s guidance and leadership, Show Daily excelled from a 20-year-ago, 12-page black-and-white tabloid to a robust, full-color magazine and guide-over 100 pages read cover-to-cover by many and relied upon by thousands. Show Daily has always been considered more than an ad-rag.

SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

When Suzy departed, some soothsayers counted Show Daily Out! For those who thought and openly expressed we were likely to go belly up, we haven’t. Four great editions have been created and published since we lost her. You see, Suzy set the foundation of Show Daily, and instilled it in our SD family. She created the highly-sought-after map, the calendar of show dates, what show opens when and for how long, the helpful buyers guide. She did this all while insisting there would be editorial content germane to the trade and show on almost every page. She took pains to match advertisers and their display ads in areas of the show in the magazine. She handled complaints and tried to make it right. She worked selflessly and tirelessly for her advertisers. When Suzy left us, we lost our leader-but we did not lose our soul. The spirit of Show Daily was left with us. That first edition we pumped out after her death was a colossal accomplishment, since her hand almost exclusively touched every inch of the magazine. Our small and dedicated staff really didn’t produce and publish the next issue for shoppers or advertisers--we did it for Suzy. We did it and continue to do it to honor her spirit and to somehow let her know that all she taught us was not lost. We’ve never been down, and we’ve never been out.

From our readers Dear Roberto, We too miss Suzy! Knowing her from advertisements we emailed over the years. She was a wonderful person and writer- like you already know. Her kind, helpful soul was so very helpful in helping us build and advertise our festival. Antique Alley Texas. We learned so much over the years from her! She was one of a kind. I know your heart is heavy but at least you had her in your life. The legacy you and Suzy Kirchberg built will live on. Best wishes with the continued BEST publication of its kind! The Other Gal on the Peripheral by Lou Christine

unkie’s Pavilion neighbors Anet Carrasco and Angela Leachman have gone through an artsy metamorphosis. These artists are both wives and mothers, yet by circumstance, have become creative craftspeople whose home spun methods repurpose tossed away or abandoned items. For more on Punkie’s unique venue and Carrasco’s story, turn to Punkie’s, page 44. Angie Leachman stems from Northern Louisiana. As a mom to three girls, she taught herself to sew and smock her own designs. She painted pictures and furniture while repurposing chairs and chests. If the market called for it, she would flip them. While working with furniture, Leachman discovered Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint—after that, nothing was sacred! She painted an old RV in red-andwhite polka dots, no less. Soon enough, that same old RV gained attention in the glamping world. In 2016 that painted polka dot trailer was named the Annie Sloan Project of the Year!

scooting around and setting up their vintage campers throughout the state, which is when she met the Van Coutren’s out shopping for campers. Leachman became business associates and friends with Kaci and Sterling Van Coutren of Warrenton’s Lone Ranger Antiques, who honcho the show at Lone Ranger Antiques, two brick buildings that previously housed the Sterling McCall auto museum some years back. Glamping enables shoppers to escape the elements by renting gentrified campers that are outfitted and placed inside. It enables guests to experience trailer camping in a more luxurious setting, with access to more luxurious amenities.

Leachman said she also belongs to a ladies’ camp- The Van Coutren’s transformed the old museum ing club called “Campers on the Fly.” They enjoy into a vibrant showplace during shows. They ...continued on page 41

Both women possess an naturally, they needed RV campers. indelible spirit, and desire to create. They are each incredibly affable, and love meeting people at the Leachman was recruited to do her thing on the Van show and sharing with them their methods of makCoutren’s line-up of trailers for their Glamper Park ing something out of nothing. in Warrenton. They wanted her to put her carefree touches on the trailers. She went to work. When Leachman works with RVs, she employs what she calls “Campy Glampy” themes with kitschy colors. Once Angie discovered plasma cutters, her creative horizons were broadened! Plasma cutters are like blowtorches, giving the ability to seamlessly weld or manipulate a wide variety of metals, alloys, and other materials. That’s all Leachman needed to increase her creativity! Industrial gas bottles, 55-gallon drums, barrels, or anything metal, was at risk at being hung or turned into a decorative lamp or a table. Leachman, after proper priming, can wield her plasma cutter with precision to form something new and useful. Of course, once manipulated, sanded, and torched, she applies the finishing touches with her chalk paint or some other coating. Her featured inventory, like her neighbor Carrasco, varies in purpose and motif--yet all are one of a kind.

Punkies Place Show Daily Staff

P

Smack in the middle of Warrenton, on Texas State Highway 237 across the street from the Warrenton Grocery, is where the granite-faced, historical Neese House’s stately frontage transforms into a colorful façade surrounded by a carnival atmosphere. For two weeks during the antique show it becomes Punkie’s Place. Punkie’s creator, Diane Conlee, gussies up and masquerades the otherwise drab and vacant residence. You can’t miss it! Far-out is the mishmash of gaudy. Some call Punkie’s inventory “whimsical!” The reaction to Punkie’s unusual wares depends on the observer. While some might say, “never-in-my house,” or “how tacky!” others hoot, “isn’t that, cool?” and “I just love it; I’ve got the perfect spot for it.” Regardless, Diane parlays the stuffy side of antiquing into a fun side. Just like Diane, Punkie’s inventory is chock with fun, and not that old. Outside of Punkie’s, you will find two separate gals who also have the Punkie’s spirit, which adds additional color to the festivities. Anet Carrasco and Angela Leachman have become a presence around the Punkie’s Pavilion. These artists are both wives and mothers, yet by circumstance, have become creative craftspeople whose home spun methods repurpose tossed away or abandoned items. (See Angela Leachman’s profile on page 40). When speaking to Carrasco about her craft, it sounds as if she has a sixth sense. If Carrasco comes across anything that may not seem all that significant, she can envision what the item will eventually look like and perhaps know its purpose the moment she sets her eyes on it. She says it’s uncanny; it sounds as if she senses her gift is a blessing. Originally from San Antonio, Carrasco resides in Houston. She coins her finished work as Folk Art fit for the indoors or outdoors. Her items are one-ofa-kind, repurposed gems that might become a piece of furniture, or hanging decorative piece, or perhaps a crowning jewel on a fireplace’s mantle or dining room table.

not because of properties employed but that the spirit and the passion of the artist can’t be masked--despite the modest make-up of the item. That’s Carrasco’s magic, a daughter of migrant workers, who perhaps sees a second chance for everything. see ad pg. 40

Jill Suzanne--Candle Scents and More By Show Daily Staff

s

howing up twice a year over the last two decades, Jill Suzanne and her happy team occupy the other house at the Little House on The Hill Show. Jill is renowned for creating candle designs along with various aromatic scents that enliven the senses. Suzanne describes herself as a small-town gal with Christian-to-the-core values, yet there’s a passionate artsy-creative side of Suzanne. She concocts scents for various environments, makes wax melts, jewelry, architectural pieces, and accessories--all goods that are on display year round at her Port Neches, Texas, store and on her webpage www.jillsuzanne.com. For ideas and fun, Suzanne and husband John hit the road, often covering states as pickers. They ferret out finds they can bring to their Warrenton Show. Suzanne emphasizes, “We enjoy the travel and love meeting people. Many become long-time friends.” A few years back, Suzanne relocated from the banks of the creek to another part of Little House’s property. Shoppers who showed up at the old location said they just followed the scents up to Suzanne’s new location, referring to her signature candles and scents. Back home, Suzanne pours her candles’ waxes into various vintage and antique holders. She designs prototypes and tests them for feedback on family and friends. Suzanne also showcases new scents at the Warrenton Show for reaction because of the diversity of the shoppers. Candle making has Suzanne employing oils 100% uncut. The beeswax color ensures such. Her scents are alluring and draw the curious. Photographers may not be drawn by the scents, but their lenses might take aim at her widely admired jewelry line, rooftop cupolas that grace the property, taxidermy items, truck and farm wagons, and other goodies. Perhaps they will find unusual pieces that the Suzanne formula has brought back to life. SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

The energetic, affable lady and her whole crew make no bones about how they’re motivated by faith. Suzanne feels blessed for talents bestowed upon her, her travels, having a terrific husband and family and friends and being able to pursue such at her own artistic pace. She feels blessed by God and realizes that beyond this Earth there are additional adventures in store. During show, Suzanne and John are great hosts. There are cold drinks and warm hearts on hand at her show. Friday evening, April 3rd, is customer appreciation night with complimentary food, drinks, and live music. The couple purchased a small spread in Fayette County a few years ago and plans to have their products available locally year-round. Suzanne laughs how she and John have been trying to take a “no business” vacation for years. Whether in a red convertible, or with truck and trailer on the hunt, they can’t ignore finds. “I love life and the journey. My faith, kids, husband and friends are my treasures, while laughter and family time are my favorite times,” says a sincere Suzanne. Suzanne and John would love shoppers to come by and say howdy during the show. see ad pg. 37

Labor of Love at Arbor Antiques By Lou Christine

icture this: You’re Texas-raised and you operate a successful oilfield service company in east Texas. Your lucrative profession has provided you a sweet home on a sweet Texas golf course. Then one day you take a road less traveled and attend a social event while visiting Mexico, where you meet an hombre. While engaging in small talk, hombre dude tells you he’s recently been given charge of a Mexican State’s entire prison system, primarily because he once was a roommate of the State’s present governor.

families in Mexico’s most southern and most impoverished state. Here in the States, Hough first set up his antiques at Marburger Farms but later became a neighbor of Pandora, the then-sole dealer at Arbor Antiques. These days, Hough is best known at Arbor Antiques for bringing quality, hand-made, colorful and embroidered clothing to the show. The clothing is indigenously produced, stemming from the region encompassing both Southern

Prison-boss-hombre wants to invite you inside the walls and pick your brain on how to better run his prison system, and you know absolutely no Spanish, nor one iota about prisons… other than staying out of them. Welcome to Mexico! That’s the way ex-Texan Clint Hough tells it, when reflecting on how he eventually wound up deep in Chiapas, Mexico, and its culture. Fast forward 20 years, Hough helps support as many as 50 indigenous SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

Mexico and Guatemala. Hough and wife, Blanca, live in a small village in the wilds of Chiapas. Hough says there’s no TV, no movie theaters and basically no nothing--yet it’s a life they thoroughly enjoy. The affable Hough laughs a bit and says when coming to “normally sleepy” Round Top it’s like coming to the big city. At first in Mexico, Hough became intrigued with Mexican antiques and folk art. His grandmother was a long-time antique dealer, so he had basic knowledge and began importing antiques to Texas. While shopping in Patzcuaro, in the State of Michoacan with his daughter (a Texas Tech student at the time), they admired the women’s garb. They formed an informal junta, purchasing 15 cotton dresses, and took them north to see how they’d go. On the next trip to Patzcuaro, they ordered 300 dresses for the upcoming show. Hough discovered that the source of the high-quality stitched items was way down in Chiapas. The rest is history: Hough resides in Chiapas, and he and Blanca schlep to Round Top with as many as 1000 items created there for each show. The couple design and direct the making of hand-embroidered and back-strap loomed clothing for men, women, and children, incorporating local textile art forms that date back thousands of years and stem from the indigenous people in Chiapas, other Mexican states, and Guatemala. Each garment takes from 3 weeks to over 3 months to make. No two are the same in hand made art. “We come out of Chiapas to Round Top, a 2,000mile trip, twice a year, to sell our artisan’s work,” said Hough. “My long journey in Mexico and beyond has been a labor of love. As with any journey, it has had its ups and downs, but I would not trade it for any amount of money I might have made in my career prime when I left my original home state of Texas years ago.”

with the passing years, he is increasingly fulfilled by the efforts they make to help improve the lives of many who virtually have no way out of poverty. The clothing makers make three times more from the Houghs than other buyers. Hough doesn’t hide his faith, nor does he flaunt it. But it sums up his mindset when he says, “We’re Christian-based. No Gringo comes to Mexico to get rich.” He believes there are a lot more riches than money. “Most of the monies earned go to the families and equipment to make us more productive,” says Hough, “Blanca and I basically exist on my social security. We don’t need much.” Living among the Chiapas people, Blanca and Clint Hough are very wealthy people.

How to navigate the fields & shows with ease by Show Daily Staff

What better way to shop the labyrinth of tents and tables than with a pro who knows the ropes and a few insider tips and tricks? That is exactly what Show Daily is - the only guide to Texas’ most important antiques event, written by those who know the shows and love the antiques business. Follow us as we put some method to the madness and help you, dear reader, learn how to shop smart during Antiques Week. WHERE TO START?!? We hear that question all the time. The answer depends on what you are looking for. Crafts? Antiques? Food and Drinks? Live Music? The whole event area covers roughly 28 miles, starting from the towns of Rutersville and Fayetteville - to the south on Highway 159 - up through Burton on the north end of Highway 237 at the intersection with Hwy 290. That’s a lot of land to cover and most folks come out with only a few free days to enjoy all there is to shop, see and do. There just isn’t enough time to cover it all. Start by making a plan. Here’s how: First, as you look through Show Daily, understand that the magazine is color-coded into sections by towns. This will help you get around. The green bars at the top and bottom of the page are an indicator that the dealers listed here can be found in Warrenton. Red bars represent Round Top dealers, purple is for Fayetteville, Carmine is yellow and Burton is blue. After 20 years publishing, it is pretty safe to say that Show Daily has its finger on the pulse of what some call the biggest antiques fair in the U.S. Show Daily magazine starts with the town of Warrenton, which is where most of the earliest shopping begins. For a more polished look, some decorators prefer focusing on the Round Top area and the paid admission venues. Both offer great and varied selections. The difference is often one of price and presentation. Do you collect old guns or Victorian jewelry? Maybe you’re looking for a place to park your RV or to unwind with a glass of wine? The answers to where these things - and a lot more - can be found right in the back of this magazine, in our Buyer’s Guide section. Simply take a peek under the heading of whatever you seek and you’ll find a list of dealers who specialize in those items or services, along with the page number where their ad appears and their Show Daily ID number SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

which matches the star number on their ad and location on the map (see centerfold). Start by using the color-coded bars to identify the town where those dealers with “the good stuff” set up. Warrenton alone has more than 30 individual show venues, most of which are called Fields. When the antiquers aren’t in town, our fields are full of country cattle. Show Daily has a big 8-page fold-out map at the centerfold. It pinpoints every venue location between La Grange and Brenham. The magazine is set up just like the physical show area. We start at the north side of Warrenton and move south through town, cross the highway and head back north again. As one continues through the magazine, the layout matches the actual geography of the show area, heading south to north through Round Top, Carmine and on to Burton (with a short side-jaunt to Fayetteville). Not every Field and show venue open and close on the same day because each area is run by different individuals. There are over 60 different show areas spread out over the 28-mile stretch known as the ‘antiques corridor’.

Rather than driving up and down the highway hoping your favorite shopping spot will be open, check the Show Daily calendar at the beginning of the magazine. Just like the magazine, the calendar is color coded by town. It lists every individual venue in those hamlets and gives the official opening and closing dates. (Note: Many Fields start selling to early shoppers prior to the published “official” dates on the calendar. Indoor venue dates are more exact.) Our Show Places section gives a description of each different venue - organized by town, with the contact information and specifics (including whether they offer early shopping). This info also comes in handy for those wanting to rent their own booth next season, or to know how to contact an area if looking to recover a lost package or other item (there is no centralized lost and found for the shows). You can now find what you’re looking for in a matter of minutes rather than days. Now that’s smart shopping. But wait, there’s more! The stories and articles in Show Daily all deal with happenings in the area or antiques-related news and tidbits of information. Looking for fun things to do in the evening? See our After-Hours notices. How about a place to do laundry or how to find someone to haul all those things that won’t fit in the SUV back home to Georgia for you? Check the Buyer’s Guide. Wondering how much that vintage gasoline sign might be worth? Or what is the hottest trend in collectibles? All of that information and more can be found within these pages. Use Show Daily to shop like a pro during Antiques Week.

MARBURGER PRESS RELEASE Marburger Farm antique show march 31- april 4, 2020

1/28/2020 Round Top, Texas. Spring at the Marburger Farm Antique Show is a time to be transported-- out of winter, out of the daily spin and into a world resembling the great antiques fairs of Europe. “ Marburger is a close as to a European market as you get in the United States, “ says exhibitor Shannon Poppino of Clutter Antiques. On tuesday, March 31, through Saturday, April 4, look for 350 antiques and art exhibitors encamped on 43 acres in Round Top, Texas. It’s as beautiful as an Italian market, but a lot closer and with Bluebonnets and margaritas. It’s not that all the treasures are European. It’s that everything has been gathered fresh for that show, all set out at one exhilirating moment-- fresh, exciting, current. Poppino, for instance, is looking for woods that are lighter in tone and for classic pieces of all eras that mix well together -not too stark, not too dark, just right for now. She’ll offer a light-colored Fruitwood chest with softer corners, inlaid veneer and bronze hardware--- “Very pretty,” says Poppino. Nearby will be pairs of Italian and French Mid- Century Modern charis with simple lines that complement traditional pieces, including Impressionist art, a pair of French Greek- key trimmed mounted consoles with painted faux marble tops- “Very Park Avenue,”she adds. “A great antique show is fashionable, just like clothes,” says exhibitor Shelli Alter of Indiana’s Dinner Party Antiques. “It’s got to be cool. It’s got to be relevant.” For Alter, like a European vendor, that means starting a collection from scratch for each Marburger

Farm Show. “Business was good in 2019, so I’m buying, buying, buying from Palm Beach to Paris.” The hunt is on for art. “Art is the icing on the cake, the patina that brings every room to life.” Buying one piece at a time, her goal is to offer at least 100 pieces of art, mostly Mid-Century Modern, all presented in 19th century wooden and gilded frames. “We love Marburger,” says Alter. “The weather, the dirt ---it doesn’t matter. It’s the best of the best.” One of the best things about opening day, Tuesday, March 31, is that early arrivals will discover “Tailgate Tuesday” from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. You’ll find a complimentary Continental breakfast, easy parking, and pre-show shopping with the dealers in buildings along the Tailgate Tuesday corridor. This includes the exhibitors in the Marburger Dance Hall, the General Store building and many others. Grab a shopping bag from the show’s sponsor, Chairish, and get going, just like an early morning at a market in Belgium. In fact, you may run into shoppers from Belgium!

Coffee in hand, visit the early Texas Zieger House and find the truly transported world of Jill Garber Couture and Le Nouveaurose. Antique embroidered silk and miles of vintage fringe will embellish clothing made for today. the whole show. It’s amazing.” The show’s nine huge tents and other buildings will open with the celebratory ringing of the bell at 10 a.m. One booth that many shoppers visit first is the Tent A phenomenon of Patrick, Karen and Bonnie Kenny of South Porch Antiques from Spencerport, NY. This is the booth that Japanese shoppers fantasize about --- and get to first. Packed with industrial and early East Coast antiques, the Kennys will shop all winter with an eye to what is worthy of transporting 1,577 miles to Round Top. According to Pat Kenny, here’s what is making the

cut this spring: massive industrial and wood tables; early architectural doors, windows and building fragments; silver serving pieces and flatware; cast iron garden elements; hundreds of “smalls” such as boxes, old trophies, lighting, ironstone, transfer ware; and natural specimens such as bird and hornet nests. Like a Paris vendor, exhibitor Adele Kerr of Adele Kerr & Co. from New Braunfels, Texas will offer styles of antiques and art “all over the place.” Look for freshly-upholstered furniture such as two Art Deco settees, a set of six French painted dining chairs, lighting, antique rugs and art, including a FB @ShowDailyMagazine

A Defining Moment . . . By Lou Christine

I

t was a defining moment, relays Heather Kaspar, owner/operator of Buck-Up Auctions and Realty, speaking of her transformation from a TV ad sales dynamo to a female, rapid-fire auctioneer. The young wife and mother of three, formerly Heather Schoenst, was born and raised in Carmine. “I loved my TV job,” Kaspar commented. She had been all-in, immersing herself in broadcasting media, primarily cable TV sales, working territories from College Station to the Gulf Coast. When things in TV ad sales began to get “funny,” minus chuckles and laughs, Kaspar said she felt a change coming on. Commission rates were no longer adding up. She decided to disengage for more than a station break. As Kaspar tells it, when she was unable to sleep, it was the blaring sounds of “Call Now and “Free Brochure” were all that broke the silence...

At the same time, Kaspar is quick to say that she’s embraced her spiritual convictions all her life. Her handsome livelihood and long-established career were at stake. Seeking guidance, Kaspar says she placed her worries in the All Mighty’s hands. Just like that! . . . Dawn arrived! Gabriel didn’t have to blow any horn. By sunrise, Kaspar envisioned a new horizon: Auctioneering. It didn’t hurt that Kaspar’s Uncle Melvin was a local and seasoned Auctioneer. Huddling with her uncle, Heather expressed she sensed she had a country feel for it. And yet, she was still a kid. Auctioneers normally were bent, swollen, and crusty, almost as old and dented as what they were hawking. Plus, she’s a girl! It might take alpha dog’s bark to hold bidders attention, to keep them in the fold and recognize the contenders from the pretenders. Order must be established and maintained. Things can get rowdy. Auctioneers must remain in control and project a clear “the court is in session” voice! In Auctioneerville the Auctioneer is the law. A gamesman, Uncle Melvin, offered Kaspar an at-bat, letting her pinch-hit auctioneering at a church feast. She showed promise and made contact. The hits kept coming as Kaspar presented, kicked off the bidding, set the pace, balancing bids while nudging some to stop sitting on their hands. From then on Kaspar was a starter. Prime time came shortly later when her Uncle gave her carte blanche to wheel the Fireman’s Feast. Kaspar was on her way. When Kaspar talks auctioneering, one senses her bigtime enthusiasm for the craft. She senses she know how to read a gathering of bidders and motivate them to get involved. She teases, compliments, kids, prods, and keeps things moving. The mission: Move the goods. Estate sales are the core of the auctioneering business these days. Yet Kaspar consults businesses more than just auctioneering off their assets. She has a crackerjack team who do much prepping before main events. Breathing life into dead in the water enterprises has become her specialty.

Burton Celebrates 150th Birthday! by Steph Jarvis

“I

t’s now how old you are, it’s how you are old!” Ever heard that expression?

You could say it fits the town of Burton pretty well, especially this year, as Burton celebrates its 150th birthday! Established in 1870 for the arrival of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, Burton has seen its share of the ebb and flow of life. But don’t let this sleepy little town fool you. Despite the tiny population of 300, there is a growing energy that is fueling new places to eat, play and stay. The past blends with the present with close to 30 buildings recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Burton Farmers Gin and Burton Railroad Depot, so there is plenty of history to explore. Come check out Burton and help make the 150th the best year yet! Visit www.burtontexas.org for more information and events.

Specialty Auctions Offers Big Time Auto Sign Collection By Lou Christine

n the last few years, gasoline and auto product advertising memorabilia have been the rage-good size porcelain signs that used to dominate intersections, advertising iconic brands. From sizzling neon signs at car dealers, those placed in windows, and actual gas pumps, these products have been heavily sought-after by collectors, and recently, the public at large.

figures he’d rather cash them in now and then have the cash for the kids to perhaps put into something else. He said once he’s gone, the kids don’t have much of an idea about the value of that collection. He even quizzed them, asking them to guess the value of some of his prize ones. The kids guessed between five and seven hundred dollars on signs worth ten times as much.

Carmine’s Specialty Auctions, just north of the Triangle on Texas Sate Highway 237, plans a whoopity-doo of an auction on Saturday, March 28th at 12pm, featuring memorabilia that once was a significant part of the Americana landscape.

Friedman and Strickland share the same enthusiasm for those gas signs, since both have been collectors and appreciate their significance. “There should be a lot of interest in this auction,” said Friedman, “with Bill (Strickland) on hand there will be revealed tasty tidbits or stories about the skinny on each piece we will be auctioning off. See y’all on the 28th.”

I

Al Friedman runs the show at Specialty. He is an Erie, Pennsylvania native who has lived in Houston for 40 years. For the last 15 years, he has been coming to the big show here. Friedman, an all-around businessman, wears many hats besides being a longtime antique dealer. Friedman recently befriended Bill Strickland, 79, who happens to be the Mayor of Liverpool, Texas. It just so happens that Strickland has been collecting automobile product advertising and restoring vintage cars since the early 60s. A Louisiana native, Strickland moved to Houston to work for Monsanto in 1962 where he was employed until recently. Speaking with Strickland, he confesses how over the years he had driven as much as a thousand miles to bid on signs or other memorabilia for sale. When Strickland speaks of his signs or his treasured Ford agency neon that dates back to 1942, he counts them as if they’re almost family. There’s no doubt over all the years his collecting has been a labor of love and obsession. Through his friendship with Friedman, he has huddled with Specialty Auctions in order to make sure the signs are offered by their worth. “Oh, there’s beauties and some that are extra sentimental I am going to keep. Some I just can’t part with, but the rest will all go,” says Strickland.

JJ’s Kountry Kitchen Is Humming Again By Lou Christine

J

ahn of JJ’s Kountry Kitchen is once again humming in the kitchen. After 25 years of being out of the restaurant business, Jahn, a people-person, decided to stir up some of the homemade, lip smacking meals she provided the community years back. A newer JJ’s Kountry Kitchen reopened last July, at 30 East Avenue, in Schulenburg.

Of course, considering this go around, Jahn now has 11 grandchildren. Her daughter, Jaime, is on hand to help when things get hectic. Jaime’s husband James pitches in too and is renowned for his frog legs for true epicureans. It is evident to happy diners that the team at JJ’s goes that extra mile, providing flavor and freshness, and a “gimmee” taste from the first bite. Why would Jahn go back into the heat of the kitchen after such a long layoff? She said she missed her long-time customers and admits she likes meeting new people. She prefers her establishment to be “howdy” friendly, like her, and to provide a value for patrons.

Jahn shut down her downtown Schulenburg Kountry Kitchen in 1994. Over time, town folks voiced how they missed her chicken fried steak, and the other tasty and nutritious meals JJ’s was known for. Jahn Cheeseburger Club Times have changed for the restaurant industry in the last few decades. Music and More in Giddings By: Kelita Alberts

G

iddings is eagerly awaiting the summertime, and the excitement of an old tradition being brought back to town.

Last July 3rd, Giddings revisited the romance of a bygone era with a community gathering around the beautiful Courthouse Square. Attendees brought their blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the sounds of live music at the Grimes Street Music Fest. As the sun set, many relived the days of their youth, dancing with their sweetheart under the stars as the band played. The first Grimes Street Music Fest was such a rousing success that the Chamber decided to do it again on July 3rd of 2020. They would like to invite everyone to come and enjoy this classic event.

If you’re hankering for something musical before July rolls around, be sure to attend the Lee County Fair on the third weekend in May (14-16th), held at Fireman’s Park on Highway 290 outside of town. There’s always a good time to be had at the Fair, starting on Thursday with admission discounted by over half! Friday is Seniors’ Day, where everyone over 60 years old gets in free from 10am-4pm for a fun time of music, bingo, square dancing and a BBQ lunch. Saturday starts with the Armed Forces Day Parade at Veteran’s Park and continues at the Fairgrounds. There’s the carnival, the Charcoal Challenge BBQ Cookoff, classic car show, cornhole tournaments, vendors and live music by well-known entertainers.
