Seniors
We truly enjoy putting together each issue of the SETX Senior Resource Guide.
It is a pleasure to sit down with World War II Veterans from around the Golden Triangle and interview them about their youth, their service during the war, and their lives after returning home. Often, we hear stories they have nhared with their spouses, their children, or anyone else. These memories are preserved on the pages of the magazine and on our website, SETXSeniors.com. Do you know a local World War II Veteran we should feature in our magazine? We’d love to talk with them. We are also scheduling interviews with Korean War and Vietnam War Veterans. We would like to recognize your service. Our articles are designed for Southeast Texans who are 55+. The book follows the Martinez family during one special holiday season. Two days before Christmas, the Martinez family has been busy getting ready for the holidays. The mother Sarah is frantically making cookies, wondering why Christmas has to be so much work and worrying about her environmentalist husband who is out in the Gulf of Mexico, doing an underwater video shoot. Fifteen-year-old Rob Martinez is a typical American teenager. Yes, he even writes songs. When he gets bored, he likes to tease and play jokes on his sister, seven-year-old Katie. Their dog, a big golden Labrador, named Charlie seems oblivious to everything around him, sleeping most of the time, but when Charlie does DZDNHQ KH ZLOO PDNH D GLŕľľHUHQFH Rob continually monitors the computer, waiting for a live video feed that their father, Jim, will be sending from his underwater video shoot in the Gulf of Mexico. The family plans to put on a play on Christmas. The grandmother, Mammaw, who wrote the play, based it on the Norwegian legend that on the night Christ was born, the animals talked. In the midst of all this holiday fun and craziness, getting ready to practice the play, a crisis occurs in the Gulf, which could spell tragedy for Jim and a disastrous Christmas for the family.

Then came basic training. Louis was not quite as prepared for the Army as he thought he would be. The drill sergeants were tougher than he ever imagined. They broke him down in a way that overwhelmed him. His basic training experience was so rough that Louis turned to his grandfather and his godfather for relief. Both were farmers. They were surprised by Scott’s uncharacteristic distress and teamed up to hire a lawyer to try to get him released from service. When he found out that the lawyer’s efforts were denied, Scott went back to the barracks and cried. The drill sergeants’ response? A twenty-mile hike. A surprising thing happened after basic training. Louis Scott loved the US Army. While he did not excel in basic training, Louis flourished in the regular Army. He enjoyed the work, the people, and the sense of purpose and accomplishment. He was sent to cooking school and exceled. was specially requested by the Mess Sergeant of Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia. Fort Lee was in charge of preparing a lot of soldiers to go to the war overseas: cooks, mechanics, laundry specialists, and military truck drivers. The Fort Lee Mess Sergeant was impressed with Scott when he made five perfect chocolate sheet cakes without a recipe and without measuring his ingredients. The Mess Sergeant told Louis if he was not going to use a recipe, that his cakes better be absolutely perfect. They were- moist, rich, and flavorful. Scott humbly credited watching his mom bake for his success. Scott was installed as Fort Lee’s 3rd Cook in charge of baking desserts and pies – hand crafted treats that were very popular with the soldiers. Louis rose quickly, being promoted rapidly to 1st cook and then to Mess Sergeant. Even if it wasn’t the way he originally envisioned it, Louis Scott had found his way to live up to his bold statements

to his friends back in Beaumont. He was now Sergeant Scott of the US Army. Every two months, Scott watched a new class of recruits graduate and board a train to California. Their next stop would be the war in the Pacific. Several times, Scott thought he would join them. He requested overseas duty a number of times. Each time, a last-minute request from a superior officer would hold Scott back in Fort Lee – once the revised orders came after he had already boarded the train to California. An officer told him the quality of food he was providing for the huge number of troops headed overseas was extremely valuable and that he should be proud of his contribution. He gave soldiers a taste of home before being sent abroad – something not all Army cooks could deliver. Louis Scott won seven prestigious mess hall inspections in a row. His captain invited the general to dine with them monthly.

Knowing how much Scott wanted to go overseas, his commanding officer gave him a special assignment – cooking on the trains bound from Fort Lee to California. He said, “That way I know our soldiers will leave for their assignments happy, well fed, and well cared for”. Louis Scott was married during his time in the service and lived with his wife off base. After the war, he returned to Beaumont and found it was like a Las Vegas on the Gulf Coast. The area was hopping with night life. Scott went to work for a popular private night club that did a brisk gambling business. He waited tables and served drinks to the high rollers, couples on dates, and the local business people who frequented the club. Oil money was everywhere. One gambler would rub Scott’s hair for good luck. When he won, he would tip Louis $100. A Houston oilman’s wife dropped her earring. When Scott

found it, he received another $100 tip. Popular with the clientele, Scott would make $80 to $100 during a Friday / Saturday shift. That was a lot of money in the 1940s and V How much? In 1955, Scott bought a brand-new Mercury with his wife for $1500. In his car, he made his own bank and kept it in his trunk. He always had money to lend people in the neighborhood. of the jobs were tough, like a fifteen-day assignment to do emergency repairs on a remote pipeline in an area with no hotel room. One of the things his new employer appreciated was that no matter how early they were scheduled to leave for a project, Scott was never late. He had an internal clock and never needed an alarm. If they wanted to leave for a project at 3 am, Scott could be relied on to be ready to go every time. Soon they found something they liked even more – Scott’s cooking. His food was so popular that the President of Mobil Oil Pipeline wanted to serve Scott’s gumbo for a party he was throwing. He sent Mobil’s private plane to Beaumont to pick it up. the oil business. Scott recalled an occasion on which a valued older contractor was told he was going to have to retire do to the industry’s shift to computerized systems he was not familiar with. He was told to bid the next job exorbitantly high. He would be awarded the contract as a reward for his years of working with Mobil – and the artificially inflated rate for the job would fund a comfortable retirement for a valued partner. Louis Scott has enjoyed life tremendously. He turned 95 this year. He does have a few things he credits to his long life: x Six days a week he walks a mile in his neighborhood. Everyone recognizes him and waves. x He still washes his own dishes and folds his own clothes. x He has some stretches that keep his muscles, back, and limbs loose and comfortable. Scott is a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he is especially fond of the music.
We would like to thank Louis Scott for talking with us and for his service to the country and to our community as part of our “Last of the Greatest” series, profiling our Southeast Texas World War II veterans. imple Facts about Reverse Mortgages
Southeast Texas seniors hear a lot about reverse mortgages, but most have lots of questions. One of the most common we get from our SETX Senior readers is: What is a reverse mortgage? A Reverse Mortgage is a loan against your home that you do not have to pay back as long as you live there. You or your estate pays the money back plus interest when you die, sell your home, or permanently move out of the residence. A Reverse Mortgage can be a great product for SETX Seniors who wish to access their home equity. Keep in mind there are drawbacks to the program and it is not for everyone. Is a Reverse Mortgage right for you? Consider these questions. Do You Need or Want the Cash?
The most important consideration when looking at a Reverse Mortgage is whether or not you need (or want) additional funds for retirement. Many Southeast Texas seniors have opinions about Reverse Mortgages, but the reality is this: Reverse Mortgages can be a great way (and sometimes the only way) for seniors to get access to their home equity to use however they want. Say, “I saw it in SETX Seniors Guide”
Today’s Golden Triangle Seniors are living longer than ever and many people need to tap their home equity to fund their longevity. Many people use Reverse Mortgages to supplement their retirement income, fund medical expenses, pay for education expenses, or even fulfill a lifelong dream like traveling. 24
www.SETXSeniors.com
To qualify for a Reverse Mortgage SETX Seniors Seniors must:
Be 62 years of age or older. Be eligible for a loan amount sufficient to pay off all mortgages and liens on your property. Own and reside in your home.
Other Considerations Even if you need or want the cash and meet the eligibility requirements for a Reverse Mortgage, there are other important considerations. How Long Do You Expect to Reside in Your Home? Many financial experts believe that Golden Traingle Seniors should plan on residing in your home for a number of years if you intend to get a Reverse Mortgage. Why? Reverse Mortgages have relatively high closing costs and as the Reverse Mortgage loan comes due if your home is no longer your primary residence, it is not necessarily the best short term option. A Reverse Mortgage can affect your eligibility for Medicaid and other low-income programs such as SSI. If you are enrolled in Medicaid or another low income program, you need to be careful that the income from a Reverse Mortgage does not disqualify you from these benefits. Your Heirs: Many people are concerned about what happens to a home with a Reverse Mortgage after they die. While a Reverse Mortgage does decrease your equity and can impact the overall value of your estate, you can still leave your home to your heirs and they will have the option of keeping the home and refinancing or paying off the mortgage or selling the home if the home is worth more than the amount owed on it. Consider all the alternatives Reverse Mortgages continue to increase in popularity. However, there are other options for accessing your home equity. HELOC: A home equity line of credit. The main downside with this type of product is that there are income requirements in order to qualify. Additionally, unlike a Reverse Mortgage, the loan must be paid back via monthly payments. On the other hand, the overall impact of a HELOC on your estate tends to be less than that of a reverse mortgage. Downsizing: Moving to a less expensive residence can be a financially efficient way to access your home equity. To Advertise Call (512) 567-8068 Today!
