And off we go! Another Dance Season!

I love that as a dance community, we get to start our new life season in September.

Even though we look at New Years as a chance for wishes and hopes and all sorts of resolutions; in the dance world that begins now.

We begin this season with the Competition Edition. As the competition world keeps growing and expanding, we work harder to offer all students an opportunity to experience the art of performance and competition. Some may have different opinions about competitions in general and that can take us into different reasons as to whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good or bad for your studio and students, but sometimes the experience of being on the competitive stage may help a student overcome their fears and doubts. Choosing the right competition for your studio and students is very important.

This season we are also introducing, MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION. This project has been in the works for some time and now under the direction of Vladimir Issaev and Yanis Pikieris it will finally be held in Miami in January 2018.

Dr. Kathleen Davenport â&#x20AC;&#x153; To Screen or not to Screenâ&#x20AC;? explains about the importance of young students getting screened to diagnose any possible situations during their dance life. Professor Clara Cravey Stanley shares her ballet tips in her article about â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pirouettes En Pointeâ&#x20AC;?. Our health coach, Kate Corallo, explains the benefit of taking B12 supplement for a healthy and happy body. Natasha Felix is urging us to get out of our â&#x20AC;&#x153;Comfort Zoneâ&#x20AC;?.

Galmont Ballet spreads magic and joy of dance.

This year Galmont Ballet kicked off our “National Dance Day” celebrations early with a visit to the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation on Friday July 28, continuing the next day Saturday July 29 with an Open House at our facilities featuring a Master Ballet class demonstration led by Founding Director/Resident Choreographer Frank Galvez, a Master Jazz class for everyone in attendance led by Founding Director/ Coach Lucia Montero, and a Dance Party that culminated the National Dance Day celebrations and led to the beginning of a new season.

A swirl of ballerinas in colorful costumes whirled around the room and socially interacted with the assisted living community members with Alzheimer’s or dementia as they were taken on an imaginary trip to the World of Ballet. The elderly audience visibly relaxed and enjoyed the delightful moment they were in, including the participation on a short dance section as everyone swayed their hands and arms to the music of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker wrapping up the wonderful visit.

Galmont Ballet’s Celebrating Our Community program was an unforgettable experience for our young dancers members of the Galmont Youth Ballet Company and left a profound mark on them on how important it is to give-back- and help those less fortunate.

“It is through community service that we can teach (and learn) the value of human kindness. We strongly believe that together, we can make a difference. This is the generation of dancers that can step up and make a change in human kindness and create positive attitudes for our future. CALL to Choreographers 2017 Blank|slate is currently seeking emerging & established, professional choreographers, ages 20 yrs & older, to participate in movement lab sessions on: September 24 , October 29 , November 26, December 17.

At no cost to the selected choreographer, artist will be given four hours of studio space at Mandelstam DANCE in South Miami. A different choreographer will be selected each month and each choreographer is required to promote and fill their session with a minimum of five participating dance artists. Participating dancers pay a nominal $20 workshop fee to work with the selected choreographer during their four hour session, 2-6PM. blank|slate offers the choreographer an opportunity to work on their craft uninhibitedly in a stress free environment. Submissions must be received by 11:59pm (EST) on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Local News /// Dance Highlights West Palm Beach, Fl Fall Festival DKDC/DIY Projects is a collective of dance and movement artists committed to the creative process and to producing dance works of uncompromising artistic integrity in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings.

The Demetrius Klein Dance Company has been a staple of the regional arts scene — and South Florida’s oldest modern dance company — since 1986. Mr. Klein is a celebrated choreographer whose awards include the Hector Ubertalli Award for Artistic Excellence, a Choreographic Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and several grants from the MacArthur Foundation.

On Saturday, October 7 at 10:30 am, children and their families are invited to see special excerpts from new works. This captivating 20-minute performance will introduce children to modern dance and conclude with a Q&A with the dancers and an opportunity for families to learn part of the dance. Curiosity and wiggling are encouraged.

On Saturday, October 14 8:00pm the Company debuts two new works choreographed by Demetrius Klein in collaboration with the dancers. Both new works embody what Klein has been perfecting for over 30 years: thoughtful expression, engaging movement, and effortless partnering.

DKDC/DIY Projects presents its second annual, site specific 7x7. It features seven dances, each seven minutes long, by seven different choreographers. Each work is choreographed specifically for the nooks and crannies of the historic Memorial Presbyterian Church, and will be accompanied by original music from renowned composer David Brazzeal. The dances are performed multiple times, viewed each time by a different docent-lead group.

Presented By Works & Process at the Guggenheim in New York The Sarasota Ballet announces today that the Company, alongside American Ballet Theatre Principal Marcelo Gomes, will be presented by Works & Process, the distinguished and celebrated performing arts series at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The program, titled The Sarasota Ballet – Classical and New Voices, will be performed twice on 19 November 2017 at 3:00PM and 7:30PM. Inside the museum’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed theater, the program will blend performance highlights with illuminating discussion between Iain Webb, Director of The Sarasota Ballet, and Gomes. The program includes Webb’s recent coaching of Gomes and Gomes performing excerpts from Sir Frederick Ashton’s masterpiece The Two Pigeons juxtaposed with Gomes’ newly commissioned choreography for his upcoming World Premiere for The Sarasota Ballet.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary, Carney has added additional “mixed repertory” programming, creating the Anniversary Dance Festival featuring SIX Kansas City Premieres across two weekends in April. Jiri Kylian’s Petite Mort, George Balanchine’s Diamonds, James Kudelka’s The Man in Black (music by Johnny Cash) are only half of the amazing offerings patrons will experience during this first ever festival format presentation.

The 60th anniversary will close with the world premiere of a stunning new production of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. This $1,000,000 production, choreographed by Septime Webre, the creator of Alice (in wonderland) seen by Kansas City audiences in 2014, is the product of a unique partnership between three of North America’s professional ballet companies (Kansas City Ballet, Colorado Ballet and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet). New sets and costumes, with original music by Matthew Pierce (also of Alice fame) tell the classic tale through dance, puppetry, video projection and other state of the art devices. Dance Competitions /// highlights Leap! National Dance Competition will be holding it’s 7th season of competition in 2018!

Last year Leap! saw a record setting amount of entries and looks

their “Leap For The Stars” leaping competition sponsored by Dream Duffle. Dancers who sign up for this special event get to show the Judges their terrific leaping abilities! The cost is just $10.00 to be a part of this exciting competition. The winner is award a number of wonderful prizes including cash and merchandise!

New this year, Leap! teamed up with Gerber Tours /Broadway Dance Dreams to offer a special award to an outstanding group routine at each regional competition. All dancers in the routine were offered the chance to participate in an amazing 5-day dance intensive experience in New York City!!!

Leap upgraded its unique onstage video projection to show animated movement in between each performance. In addition, it’s new colorful award medallions were custom designed and dancers loved them. Many of the dancers were seen wearing them around throughout the weekend.

Leap! offers two levels of competition. The “SKIP! LEVEL” is for those dancers that are less competitive and the “LEAP! LEVEL” is designed for the more competitive dancer. Dancers in both levels really shined this year. Teachers seemed to do a wonderful job choreographing routines to the abilities of their dancers in each level.

est Palm Beach Florida was the host for the 2017 Dance Educators of America National Workshop and Competition. Students from all over the United States, Panama and Mexico attended. Special Guest Teachers, Karla Garcia and David Guzman from the Broadway hit “Hamilton” were some of the highlights of the week.

College Scholarship Auditions were held along with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines auditions. The Gala Awards Banquet crowned our 2017 National Title Winners and awarded their prestigious National Directors Award and the President’s Award. Dance Educators of America honored Ben Vereen for all of his contributions to the arts.

Dance Educators of America held their Musical Theatre Intensive in West Palm Beach also.

Partnering with So Danca, 15 scholarships were offered to students from all over the country to attend. The week culminates with a 45-minute show featuring these talented students singing, dancing and acting. The talented staff comes from LA along with the Interns.

Our Certified Teachers Training Program offered three levels of certification. The core classes were Tap Ballet, Jazz and Modern. Classes in hip hop, acrobatics, lyrical, contemporary, injury prevention, the McGovern Method in strength and conditioning were held. West Palm Beach Convention Center will Host the 2018 National Events for Dance Educators of America from July 1 through July 13.

Miami International Ballet Competition January 24 - 28, 2018 Miami has a new professional Ballet Competition open to local and international aspiring dancers ages 9 to 25 under the leadership of Vladimir Issaev and Yanis Pikieris.

Vladimir Issaev and Yanis Pikieris, have both enjoyed very successful international careers as dancers, choreographers and artistic directors, and share enormous experience in the development of young ballet artists not only as teachers but also as jury members for different competitions around the world.

As long time important figures of Miamiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artistic community, they had been talking for a few years now, about how our cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multicultural, international flavor and beauty, make it an ideal destination for a ballet competition. So they decided to join forces in the desire to create a new, annual international dance event for South Florida.

ternational following of spectators and artists that will come to Miami annually to share their diverse cultures in a unique dance experience.

Its jury will be comprised of internationally renowned ballet masters and directors, whose knowledge and expertise will aid in making it a world-class event.

Participating young artists will also have the opportunity to receive master ballet classes taught by a panel of guest teachers.

The competition will take place at the Julius Littman North Miami Beach Performing Arts Theater and is open to dancers ages 9 to 25 classified in 4 different age divisions. They will be able to compete in different categories such as Pas de Deux, Ensemble or Individual Competitor.

I see dancers most commonly for a screen if a teacher has told them they might be ready to go en pointe. This is a unique time for a dancer and it can help to test some muscles and movements. The results of the screen can give the dance teacher more information about the readiness of a dancer to go en pointe. Perhaps a dancer needs a few exercises to be successful en pointe, and perhaps someone needs a little more time to develop strength and technique. It is an additional tool to help the dance teacher decide what is best for the dancer.

here is much debate and discussion in the Dance Medicine world regarding Screening. A screen is a quick look at a dancerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall function. The ideal screen would be able to predict if a dancer is at risk for injury. Many screening tests do not predict injury, so there have been questions if dancers should be screened at all.

Screening is very common in almost all â&#x20AC;&#x153;traditionalâ&#x20AC;? sports. It is called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;pre-participation physical.â&#x20AC;? This is when an athlete goes to a doctor, or other provider, and is given a questionnaire and several physical tests. A high school basketball coach will almost certainly require a player to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;medically clearedâ&#x20AC;? for basketball.

Based on the results of these questions and tests, it is determined if the athletes is â&#x20AC;&#x153;medically clearedâ&#x20AC;? for sport participation. Dancers traditionally donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t participate in screens before starting a new dance season. Therefore, screening dancers is not something always discussed by providers treating â&#x20AC;&#x153;traditionalâ&#x20AC;? athletes, and not all providers are aware of the unique needs of dancers.

The downside of screening is many times tests donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t accurately predict if a dancer will be injured or not. A screen is looking at the big picture, so it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t catch everything. One of the biggest risks of screening is thinking â&#x20AC;&#x153;everythingâ&#x20AC;? is okay just because a screen went well. It is important to have regular visits with your doctor and to tell your doctor if something hurts, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel right, or if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re having trouble. A small injury can become a big problem if you wait too long to tell someone.

Screening is one tool that is available to dancers, parents, teachers, and directors. It should be considered within its limitations of looking at the big picture, but not catching everything. A screen can help a dancer and teacher decide if the time is right to go to a new level in their dance development such as en pointe, and it can help identify some areas of weakness that can be strengthened.

If you decide a screen is right for you, make sure to see a provider who works with dancers and understands your unique needs.

Dance Healthy, Dance Happy!

One benefit of screening is that a good screening test performed by a doctor who knows dancers can pick up areas in which a dancer may be weak. For example, often dancers overwork some muscles and underwork other muscles. This is common in all sports, but dancers may not know if they have weak muscles unless they are specifically tested. Dance-specific strength and function tests can show a dancer where they may have strength and where there are areas that need work. Then, a specific cross training plan can be taught to strengthen the weak muscles and reduce the strain on the overworked muscles.

Many dancers have an instinctive fear of turning en pointe. It is important for students to recall and reconnect with early experiences that inspired them to dance. Try to recall first seeing or dancing in The Nutcracker, remembering their initial glimpse of the Sugar Plum Fairy twirling effortless and magically on stage. Overwhelmed with the experience, children tip-toed home while reenacting the ballerina’s turns and spins until thrilled with dizziness.

This exuberance inspires many young dancers to rush into class ready to whirl and twirl. This excitement is often met and unintentionally constrained by drills of quarter turns and sustained balanced positions. While this is certainly the foundation required for proper pirouette execution, such essential technical work may cause the dancer to lose that natural feeling and thrill of turning.

The technical execution, precision of the positions, and natural feeling for turning should be simultaneously taught and encouraged. Solely drilling the technique may inhibit a student’s confidence and comfort turning. Incorporating class exercises that develop both the technical mechanics and natural turning sensation will encourage confidence, proficiency, and consistency in students. As a teacher, it is essential to help students feel the thrill and fun of turning while implementing exercises that develop the ability to maintain the proper position throughout the duration of the turn. Several tips and drills may help to facilitate this process. We all can relate to the frustration felt by the ability to turn like a top one day then fall out of a double pirouette the next. These suggestions develop skills which may enable the dancer to execute successful pirouettes more consistently.

Give exercises and class work that allow dancers to feel the majority of body weight on the supporting leg in the preparation.

Correct weight distribution established in the preparation prevents the dancer from “finding” their balance in relevé or during the pirouette itself. This places them closer to where they must be for a successful balance and turn.

Tip #2 Utilize the plié in the preparation It is recommended that a slightly deeper plié is utilized just before the relevé, while the supporting heel remains firmly pressed into the floor. This prevents the weight from shifting away from the supporting leg. A properly crossed 4th position, opposite 5th position, also helps the weight to stay over the supporting leg.

In pirouettes from 4th position, the tendency is for students to turn the front foot in and roll or spiral onto pointe. This problem often creates an incorrect spinning or “climbing up” approach to the relevé rather than the desired springing action which propels the dancer to the top of the supporting leg for a strong feeling in the hips and secure pirouette position.

of the body. This allows dancers to feel the sensation that the turn is initiated from the middle or the center of their body rather than from their extremities, especially the arms.

Tip #4 Control and strength paired with a relaxed neck Introduce preliminary exercises that allow dancers to discover and assess where they may be holding tension. For example, a promenade in retiré on a flat full foot or balancing en pointe at the barre with a loose feeling in the neck helps to combine the two juxtaposing feelings of a strength and relaxation needed for turning.

Tip #5 Take the fear out of turning Try to make turning a fun challenge for the students, rather than a dreadful portion of technique class. Once a student establishes a sound technical foundation, difficulty turning may be attributed to psychology, lack of confidence or simply fear.

Sometimes the only way of c o n q u e r i n g this fear is to simply turn! Eliminating the stress or anxiety of turning with simple games, goals, or challenges may distract the psyche of the dancer, allowing them to feel the natural sensation of the turn. As the goal of these exercises is for dancers to develop more confidence when turning, less attention and priority may be placed on technical elements or precision. The word “spin” is often taboo in ballet technique. Conversely, I encourage teachers to allow their students to spin, perhaps by practicing fast châinés or paddle turns to get the rhythm and snap of the head spot in a variety of turns without the technical demands required for pirouettes.

I encourage instructors to use their creativity to develop exercises that encourage dancers to explore different approaches to pirouettes and turning in general. A dancer with a strong technical foundation should continually seek the enjoyment of turning, staying true and connected to that little girl whirling and twirling her way into the studio.

Your Comfort Zone: Get out already!!!!

Have you lived 75 years? Or lived 1 year, 75 times?

That’s what living in your comfort zone looks like. It’s reliving the same year, over and over again. Why? Because you’re afraid of doing something you’ve never done before. The mystery of the unknown stresses us out. We want to know what’s going to happen ahead of time. The thought of going in blind scares us to the bone. The problem with that is, as Albert Einstein said so long ago, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.

Some of you may say, but Natasha, I like the results I’m getting right now. I have no desire to change a thing? My answer to that is, true fulfillment in life comes from growth and contribution. Growth comes from expanding your knowledge, your experiences, your skills. The only way to do that is by learning and/or doing something new or in a different way, which automatically means stepping out of the zone you believe you’re so comfortable in.

Don’t kid yourself. Staying in your comfort zone doesn’t necessarily mean we’re feeling ‘comfy’ and happy. Many times, there’s nothing really comfortable about our comfort zones, except the fact that we already know what to expect: the good, the bad and the ugly. As crazy as it may seem, we sometimes fear ending a relationship we are unhappy in, or quitting a job we absolutely hate, because we can’t imagine how our life will be if we take the terrifying step. Even though we are absolutely miserable, we’re afraid that by making a change we could end up in an even worse situation.

Deep down we have an instinctive desire to grow and expand our frame of reference, to serve others and enjoy life to the fullest.

Interestingly enough, we also have an innate tendency to stick to what we know, because that is where we feel safest. And that’s where we have the biggest tug-of-war with ourselves.

We fear things because we set certain expectations on ourselves and at the same time believe we are unable to meet them.

We stop ourselves from trying new things because we’re afraid we don’t have the potential or capabilities to succeed.

Does your life feel like a roundabout or a highway? At the end of your very hectic

year, have you honestly made progress, gotten ahead, reached a new destination ‘figuratively speaking’ or are you pretty much standing on the same spot you started out one year ago? Don’t be deceived, being busy does not constitute growth. You can be busy doing the same thing you did last year, or the previous one for that matter. If you’re current year is a carbon copy of the past ones, you have become a champion of staying in your comfort zone and are not making significant progress in your life.

When you realize, you have been stuck in your comfort zone, you should ask yourself these questions. What would I like to be doing differently in my life? Have I not

done it because I am coming from a place of love or fear? Many times, fear keeps us from doing things, because we imagine all kinds of negative consequences which most of the time are not established in truth. H.P. Lovecraft said it perfectly: The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.

Do you see life as an exciting adventure?

Are you a life explorer? Is every day a new opportunity to discover something new?

Or will you reach your 75th birthday only to realize that the only stories you have to tell are the ones you created when you were 30 years old and have been recounting over and over for the past 45 years?

Living in our comfort zone or daring to step out of it, is closely linked with our self-imposed limitations and limiting beliefs. What meaning do we assign to the unknown? Is the unknown something we consider to be exciting or is it scary? Exciting and scary are two different emotions which could give us either the courage to try or the fear not to. We tell ourselves that the only way to be happy is to know ahead of time what to expect.

However, if we reframe our thinking to believe that discovering what’s on the other side of a new direction is exciting, exhilarating and stimulating, suddenly, trying something completely out of the box isn’t quite so scary. The meaning we place on things determines the quality of our experiences.

Change the meaning you assign to the unknown, and you will change your life.

THE GREAT DANCE LIFE

The Dance Community Network November 7, 2017 West Palm Beach, Fl The word “DANCE” is a big trigger word that induces memorJFT and emotions, whether good or bad, in the dance world. Dance triggers a very passionate response and reaction.

When I mentioned that I publish a dance magazine at a recent workshop I attended, all they heard was “Dance”. About half of the room came to me to share their dance experiences, whether they danced themselves, are dance-moms, wanted to dance or know someone that dances. Everyone has a dance connection. To some extend, and within the six-degrees-of-separation, dance connects us in a profound way.

The Dance Community is a dancer turned doctor, a dancer turned teacher, a dancer turned coach, a dancer turned publisher. The Dance Community is just like you and me, but what connects us is “Dance”.

This publication has become a vehicle to keep PVS group connected with something XF cherish very much. Articles include: featured personalities, achievements, collaborations, personal development, healthy eating choices and recipes, and finding time to heal and rest.

DANZ’N is accessible through its print magazine and online website and social media communication.

I EP belieWF, that a Dance Community Network is important for us to have, as a group.

The Great Dance Life My goal is to expand this into its own program by using our talented pool of teachers, trainers, writers, healers and coaches to create and offer training, development, coaching and more in various stages to various fields and groups withJO UIFJS specific MJOF PG interests.

The Great Dance Life is branching out into Business Development for the Studio Owners, Teachers Networking programs,Youth Personal Development Workshops, Dance Parents Luncheon workshops, a book compilation of dance stories, online interviews and more.

We are starting an online TV interview series, featuring dance events, personalities, accomplishment and more.

After many roadblocks, adjustments and changes, I finally feel ready to move on with these projects that I’ve been working on for some time already.

If you are interested in attending this workshop or would like to speak before this group and share your books, blogs, workshops, training programs and more, please contact me. The tentative date for our first half-day workshop is November 7th. I look forward to hearing from you.

Ballet Palm Beach Academy celebrated its 25th year West Palm Beach - BPB Academy celebrated the beginning of its 25th year!! The party took place at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. It was a two-fold event: a performance and a party.

The performance featured company dancers, some of whom had grown up in the academy from the very beginning, academy students, and two alumni, Eric Emerson with partner Claire Glidewell (SMU) and Elizabeth Faber (Juilliard).

After the performance, the guests retired to the lobby for music, drinks, and treats whilst catching up on old times and mingling with the dancers and BPB faculty. Artistic Director, Colleen Smith, was tickled pink to have some of her very first students join in on this special day!

Here’s to another 25 years of ballet excellence in Palm Beach County!

Capturing Brazzdance The “Twelve Summers” and “Capturing Brazzdance” Exhibit Evening will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Deering Estate. “Twelve Summers” features GroveHouse Artists’ paintings and watercolors from their 12th season of collaboration with the Deering Estate and includes works from the January Affair en Plein Air juried painting event.

In “Capturing Brazzdance,” photographer Carlos Di Roberto Martinez documents the choreographic and performative works from Augusto Soledade’s Brazzdance 2016–2017 season. Exhibit evenings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

The exhibit will be on display daily, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from July 15 through September 27, and is free with Estate admission.

Miami - Capturing Brazzdance is an initiative to collaborate with photographers and visual artists to produce images of the company beyond the fleeting moment of performance.

In 2015, Color in Dance showcased the photography of Jade Matarazzo at the Amadlozi Gallery in Miami.

In 2013, Dance Memoirs featured Augusto Soledade Brazzdance, the work of dance photographer Mitchell Zachs, and beautiful dancing images of our company captured in performance.

In 2011, dance photographer Lucrecia Diaz was the featured artist in Capturing Brazzdance celebrating the emotion, texture and precision in movement as our dancers leap, turn and design the space within the camera frame.

TEXAS BALLET THEATRE

Tatiana Melendez, originally from Tampa, Fl began her training at the All American Dance Factory and Classical Ballet School. She has won the gold and silver medal at the World Ballet Competition, was a Youth America Grand Prix finalist from 2011-2015 and grazed the cover of DANZ’N as the 2015 Cover Model Winner.

At age 15 she joined Houston Ballet Academy’s Professional Division on scholarship where she performed in Ben Stevenson’s “The Nutcracker”, HBA premier of John Neumeier’s “Yondering”, Stanton Welch’s “The Long and Winding Road”, ” Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”, “Cinderella” and the world premier of Stanton Welch’s “The Nutcracker” Tatiana is currently with Texas Ballet Theatre as a trainee.

Ballet Quad Cities is the longest-running resident professional ballet company in the entire state of Iowa and western Illinois, one of only 100 in the nation.

Nicholas Garlo came to Paris Ballet and Dance as a boy to begin his serious dance study until he graduated at Dreyfoos School of the Arts. While with Paris Ballet and Dance he performed many exciting roles, and later danced with the Palm Beach Opera, and others.

With his great dance education, he was accepted into the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase College in New York. There, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and a Minor in Arts Management. In May of 2017, he graduated, Cum Laude with the Bert Terborgh Award.

Nicholas also studied at numerous summer intensives such as Springboard Danse Montreal, Jacob’s Pillow the Contemporary Program, The Netherlands Dance Theater Intensive, Launch with Northwest Dance Project, Arts Umbrella, the Movement Invention Project, and Joffrey Chicago. He also received the chance to study abroad in Taiwan for five months, where he continued to study and research classical ballet, modern, contemporary, and eastern influenced techniques such as Chinese Opera Kung Fu. Director Jean-Hugues Feray and the staff of Paris Ballet and Dance are very proud of Nick, and his many wonderful accomplishments. His future is bright as a professional dancer!

ACCEPTED INTO JUILLIARD

Mia Caceres-Nielsen, 17, of Hypoluxo,FL. a graduate of the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is one of 12 girls (and a total of 24 students) in the world to be selected to attend Juilliard’s BFA Dance Program in New York City.

She studied at the Southern Dance Theatre in Boynton Beach, then under Deborah Marquez at the School of Ballet Arts in Lake Worth and Magaly Suarez of Florida Classical Ballet.

Over the past few years she has performed professionally with the Dance Alive National Ballet in Gainesville. Caceres-Nielsen, has been dancing since she was 5 and dance became a deep passion for her during her years at BAK MSOA. A straight-A student, she also received an almost-full scholarship to Duke University in North Carolina.

By going to Juilliard, she hopes to grow as an artist and make connections in the dance world.

Caceres-Nielsen will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. ”It’s a significant financial expense but Mia has received some scholarships from Dreyfoos and from the George Snow Scholarship Fund,” said her mother, Monica Sue Nielsen. “Mia is applying for as many as she can and is ready to take out student loans and do work/study.”

1) How long have you been teaching dance?

6) How do you inspire your students?

I have been teaching ballet for 17 years.

I inspire my students through encouragement, I let them know that I believe in them, We are a team and we have to work tireless to reach the goal of being the best dancer and artist they can be.

I enjoy teaching and I try to transmit my dancers the love for this challenging art.

2) What classes do you teach?

I teach ballet, pointe, variations and contemporary ballet.

3) What makes teaching dance fulfilling to you?

Seeing my students setting up goals to improve their skills and loving what they do despite the sacrifices and efforts make me feel accomplished. My spirit is fulfilled knowing that through dance they are learning important values like discipline, respect, generosity, perseverance, etc. Dance is not just learning steps or movements, dance is so much more and I really want my students to live their dance experiences that way, dance is preparing them for life.

7) What’s your favorite dance production?

4) What is your teaching philosophy?

I have many memorable moments, to witness the progression of my dancers and see the happiness on their faces when they have accomplished something is priceless. I am thankful to experience these rewarding moments, my students inspire me constantly.

This is a difficult question because I like so many. My favorite has to be Swan Lake, I love the music, the story and the choreography; it is a master piece.

8) What has been your most memorable moment as a teacher so far?

My teaching philosophy is: “You can reach your goals with hard work” The success in this dance world is not limited to naturally gifted dancers, I believe that you can build your talent with hard work and perseverance. It is not going to be easy but the rewards are phenomenal. Love what you do and never give up!

9) Best piece of advice for students and/or teachers: I would love to remind the dance students that corrections are fundamental to grow and improve. The teacher gives you corrections with the only purpose for you to succeed. Compliments are very important too but corrections push you to try harder and achieve your best. Apply the corrections as soon as you can, of course many of them will take weeks of practice but never give up. Take corrections positive knowing that your teacher wants the best for you, you are very important for her/him.

5) If you could describe your dance classes in 3 words, what would they be?

Technical: I focus a lot on the bases to make sure the students have a strong foundation. A proper body placement is fundamental so I emphasize the use of muscles during the whole class. I always make sure the students know the correct way to perform a step, paying special attention to transitions.

Challenging: Every combination is a challenge! Speed, musicality, power, strength, coordination, fluidity, etc.

Artistic: Dancing from the soul is very important. From the warm up to the bow I remind the students to show the love for what they do and to transmit that special feeling to the audience.

10) Share a funny story about class or students.

I use analogies to help my students understand how they have to feel some movements or how those movements should not look.

For example: “No chicken wings, let the water run through your arms”:)
