ARMY 10-MILER SHADOW RUN

By Appointment The Equestrian Center offers horseback riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders in both English and Western-style riding. Therapeutic riding lessons are also available and taught by certified instructors.

Horses, saddles and tack for lessons will be provided if needed. Patrons must be at least seven years old. The price is $60 per hour for a private lesson, $175 for five group lessons, $225 for five semi-private lessons and $250 for five private lessons.

“The Birds” by Conor McPherson Through Sept. 10 • Shows start at 8 p.m.

In an isolated house, strangers Nat and Diane take shelter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find relative sanctuary but not comfort or peace; there’s no electricity, little food and a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Another refugee, the young and attractive Julia, arrives with some news of the outside world, but her presence also brings discord. Their survival becomes even more doubtful when paranoia takes hold of the makeshift fortress--an internal threat to match that of the birds outside.

Men and Women lift 1,000 pounds and 500 pounds respectively in a combined bench press, dead lift and squat challenge.

Patrons separating or retiring from the military are welcomed to attend a Transition Information Program. The workshop covers veterans’ education benefits, civilian health care, housing and property markets, career transitioning and more at the Sam Houston Community Center.

The Camp Bullis Rod-N-Gun Recreation Center in bldg. 6215 is providing Concealed Handgun License (CHL) classes. Successful completion of this class is required to apply for a Texas CHL. RV STORAGE There are 354 storage sites available for rent at JBSA-Camp Bullis. Cost is $40 per month, $100 per quarter and $300 per year.

SPORTSMAN’S RANGE Saturdays and Sundays • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Sportsman’s Range at the JBSA-Camp Bullis Rod-N-Gun Recreation Center is available for shooting and target practice, weather permitting. Please call to ensure the range is open prior to coming out. The cost to shoot is $10 per DOD ID cardholder and $15 per non-DOD ID cardholder. DOD ID cardholders may purchase an annual pass for only $60. All DOD ID cardholders are allowed to sponsor two non-DOD ID cardholder guests. Guests must be in the same vehicle as the sponsor. ON FORT SAM HOUSTON SALADO PARK Salado Park is perfect for family fun and events and is located adjacent to Salado Creek. The 13-acre park has 10 picnic areas available for rent for $15 accommodating 25 people, two large patio areas for $30 accommodating 50 or more and a covered pavilion for $45. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance at the Outdoor Equipment Center and include picnic tables and a BBQ stand. The park also features a volleyball court and playground areas.

RV STORAGE There are 175 RV storage sites available for rent on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. Cost is $40 per month, $100 per quarter and $300 per year. For more information, call 221-5225 or 221-5224.

RV PARK The RV Park has 74 full hookup RV pull-through sites with water, sewage and electricity. There are also two shower facilities and two laundry facilities for the customer’s convenience. All sites are 30/50 amp. There is a maximum stay limit of 30 days. The rates are $20 for a

day, $120 per week and $440 per month.

The Outdoor Equipment Center has moved to the Ponderosa Facility (bldg. 3538) located near the Equestrian Center and provides equipment rentals for all activities, to include camping, water fun, fishing boats, speed boats, sports and party equipment. BOAT RENTALS It’s that time of year to hit the lakes around San Antonio and surrounding areas. So, be sure to reserve the boat of your choice.

GRID IRON SERIES The Grid Iron Series is a football season long golf league where players will blind draw a football team when they sign up. Each golfer will play when their partner NFL team plays and against the golfer paired to their opposing NFL team in an 18-hole stroke play competition with full handicaps.

Players earn points for winning the golf match and for their football team winning the game. The player earning the most points will be declared the winner. All ties will be decided by net best ball of holes 16-18.

Players do not need to play together but they need to start their round before their NFL team finishes their games. All scores must be attested by another golfer.

If a team has a bye week participants do

not need to play a match that week.

Players will earn points throughout the entire season with the top six players in each division advancing to the playoffs. The four players with the highest point totals will get a first round bye and everyone else will re-draw for teams and will continue to re-draw for teams each week they advance.

The FCC Program is looking for individuals who can care for children during traditional work schedules, swings shifts, evenings and other nontraditional work shifts or schedules.

FCC is also looking for individuals to care for children with special needs.

The next new Provider Candidate Orientation classes are Sept. 6-8 and Oct. 25-27 and advanced enrollment is required.

The FCC program and homes follow the guidelines and policies in accordance with Air Force Instruction 34-276, Family Child Care (FCC) Programs, DOD Instruction 6060.2, Child Development Programs and the Quality Standards for NAFCC Accreditation. OCTOBER 1 Assemble your team and start training for the 22-mile bike race through the Texas Hill Country, the 6-mile run across Canyon Lake dam and 2-mile raft event on Oct. 1 at the JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake.

This adventure race promotes teamwork, competition and fun by challenging four-person Xtreme teams (must have at least one DOD ID cardholder), eight-person Relay teams (must have at least two DOD ID cardholders) in three categories: all male, all female and coed. There is also a category for all active-duty Xtreme and relay teams. The event also includes a “Just-4-Fun� category for individuals that want to participate.

This year we will also give the “Just-4-Fun� individuals trackers to check their time at the end of the race.

The registration fee is $120 for Xtreme teams, $180 for Relay teams and $25 for individuals. The fee covers a BBQ lunch, commemorative t-shirt and awards for teams.
