Did it fly by the same way for you that it did for our family? September is here and with it another school year. The biggest thing for our family will be the gradual shortening of the days. Make every moment of daylight count! As we lose the daylight in the evenings, it makes the weekends even more important. Don’t miss an opportunity to take family photos, play in the backyard with your kids, or head to the lake (or dove field!). Teal Hunting Southeast Texans spend a lot of time outdoors with kids: kayaking, camping, fishing, and hunting. For hunting families, September is best known as the kickoff for dove season. September is also teal season. Teal are small ducks that arrive in Texas (and Louisiana) before the big ducks come. They are quite tasty. There are three types of teal that migrate here: blue wing, green wing, and cinnamon. Blue and green wing are noticeably more common locally. Southeast Texas Family Tip: Teal season is great for those who typically pass on duck hunting because they, “don’t like to be cold”. Many people teal hunt in shorts. You can hunt from a boat, from the shore, or standing in the water. This also makes it a great opportunity to introduce children to duck hunting. Just like any hunting with kids, safety is the main thing. For kids Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
hunting the first time, it can be good to have one adult not hunt and keep an eye on them until everyone is comfortable that the safety rules are understood. Don’t forget your hearing protection, safety glasses, mosquito spray – and sunscreen! If you’re hunting from land, check everyone for ticks that night. Teal are fast. I mean, REALLY fast. There are no guarantees that you’ll get very many (if you do okay on doves, you’ll be fine). As with any Southeast Texas family outdoor activity, the goal is to make sure the kids have a good time, so they will want to do it again. Hedge your bets by throwing out noodles the night before to ensure some catfish fun or taking fishing poles to catch a few white perch or bass when the morning rush slows down. Point out the cool animals you see: great blue heron, black and white ibis, marsh hens.

Of course, it would be a shame not What makes this event stand out? Dove hunting at its core is a social season. activity. You can have a great time even if no one gets a single dove. Unlike silently manning a deer stand, with a dove hunt, the more people who participate the better. It is not unusual to have 40-50 friends and family members part of growing up in this rich landscape between the Gulf of Mexico, the Big Thicket, and our “Great Lakes”, Sam Rayburn - Livingston - and Toledo Bend.
You can talk, tell stories, and laugh at each other’s jokes. Young children can hunt with dad or a favorite uncle (or aunt!) who will show them the ropes and who will be sure to reinforce all of the safety elements. My Favorite Recipe...
is a blend of what I learned from an old hunting buddy, my father, and Katherine of Katherine & Co. in the Mildred Building on Calder in Beaumont. • Dove breasts • Bacon (I like thin bacon to totally wrap the breast like a mummy) • Jalapeno halves (canned or fresh. I prefer canned for this recipe). • Your choice of cheese. I like cream cheese, but you can use cheddar, jalapeno jack, or your favorite. You can cheese like cilantro, green onion, or 10/15 onion. • Dried mango, papaya, and pineapple cut into long, thin strips. This is the part I borrowed from Katherine and Co. It gives a sweet chewiness to the Gujarati kids (from India) and learned to appreciate that mix of spicy and sweet. You take a jalapeno half and stuff your cheese in the cavity. Then press the dove breast and your dried fruit against the jalapeno, further sealing in the cheese. Wrap the whole thing tightly with bacon. Add a couple of toothpicks to hold everything together. The goal is to crisp your bacon, cook the dove breast while keeping it tender, and to keep any of your Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, molten cheese from falling out.
