A Letter to Our Readers There’s a thing guys do, mostly around other guys, that even sensitive New Agey guys find funny if they admit it and that makes women roll their eyes.

No, not that thing, but good guess. It’s the thing where, if you say something that’s even vaguely suggestive, the other guy says, “That’s what she said.” Say you shrink a T-shirt in the drier, and say, “Dang, it shrunk.” Proper response is – well, you get the idea. There was a guy who knew a guy who didn’t quite grasp the intonation, and said, “That’s what she said.” When his friend told him, no, it’s that’s what she said, the Laurel and Hardy routine was on. “That’s what I said.” “No, you said that’s what she said.” “That’s what you said.” “No, I said that’s what she said. You said that’s what…” You get the idea. The point, other than filling up some page space? People don’t listen – and even sensitive New Agey guys might decide to leave their summertime poolside Letter from the Editor picture up one more month. –Michael Abedin

M

y wife, Nerissa, drives the Chevy Volt, and loves it. She’s had it since 2012. Her electric car never fails, always looks great, contains what feels like enormous room inside, and rides smooth on our errands and trips. It’s a great car. It’s so great that we just went and traded it in for a brand new 2017 Chevy Volt.

But I live in Texas, where I have seen the car on the road but have never test driven one. (I asked for a test drive and so far, over three weeks later, no one has replied.) Besides, I’m not all that keen to get into another electric car, given my trauma with the Fisker. And the most recent news was of a man killed while using the auto driving feature on his Tesla.

But not all electric cars are so cool, or so reliable. I owned the Fisker Karma a few years ago. It was the opposite. It was a nightmare to drive, though it was stunningly beautiful. There were over a dozen things wrong with it, and the company. Eventually the company went bankrupt, and I sold the car at a big loss. Of course, Tesla is all over the news. I called them when they announced their limited edition of 100 Roadsters, around 2008. But Tesla talked me out of buying one, saying they didn’t have service stations in Texas and wouldn’t be able to repair my car without transporting it to California or sending a technician to me.

Good thing I passed on that roadster, as even Elon Musk today admits that his first car was a disaster. In a June 2016 Road and Track article online, Musk was reported as saying they had “no idea what we are doing,” and characterizing their original efforts as “completely clueless.” Tesla is still getting lots of the media attention and I’m glad to see it. Tesla’s new cars look hi-tech, dependable, and safe.

Apparently, the long-range electric sports car is not yet out of the woods. But all this got me wondering about the origin of the electric car. In an episode of Jay Leno’s great new TV show, Leno’s Garage, he drove an electric car from the early 1900’s that could get ninety miles a charge. What happened to it? What happened to all the other early electric cars? So I did some research. Turns out in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the most popular car was the electric. There were steam-driven cars, which no one liked, and a few gas-driven cars, which no one knew how to drive or fix. But people were ready for something new, as the feces and urine-filled streets, where horse-drawn carriages turned the roads into a sewer of slosh, was just too much, and too unsanitary. The electric was clean, dependable, and smart. Of course, there were few cleared roads then. And no driving schools. And no battery chargers. And few people had electricity. And even fewer could actually afford the much more expensive electric car. And a single battery cost more to replace than the Model T would cost to own. For example, the price of a Detroit Electric car in 1914 was about $2,650. If you wanted to upgrade to the Edison Nickel Iron batteries, then the price went up about $600. At the same time, you could buy two new Model T’s for that same $600. (!)

It was an uphill battle for the electric car. Of course, many tried to make it work.

6

Some entrepreneurial companies saw a business in an electric car taxi service. The problem was, the cars could only drive about ten miles before needing a charge or a battery replacement. This was an incredible nuisance for the passenger since you could only go five to ten miles away (!), as well as for the driver – and not to mention the cab company. As a result, electric cars were made, but they weren’t sold easily – first, because they were too expensive to buy, and second, they were too expensive to keep replacing batteries. Most of the electric car companies went bankrupt.

And then Henry Ford enters. Ford actually wanted to invest in the electric car, and make them. He bought an electric car every other year for years. He and his wife loved them. But the electric car companies created a coalition to block any competitors they didn’t like. In short, many electric car companies got greedy and tried to create a monopoly. Ultimately, they drove themselves off the pages of history. The Mark III electric car circa 1901 could go twelve mph and went thirty-five miles. The electric car simply wasn’t convenient or affordable at the time, and many electric companies were ruthless and competitive. But that’s not all that happened to make the electric car lose power.

hit record highs, that the mass public started to look for an electric car again.

I’m joining in that search. A decade ago, when I met the people who make Panoz racecars (I have two of their street-legal beauties), I told them iff they make an environmentally friendly sports car, I’d buy it. They haven’t yet. When I heard of Ronn Motors inventing a hydrogen driven sports car, I ordered the first one, bought stock in the company, invested in the company, promoted the car on national television and on the front page of local magazines. The company went bankrupt. When I heard of a sports car that could run on seawater, I contacted the German company and asked if I could invest in it and order a car. No one answered. It was a marvel that runs on salt water, gets 960 hp, and 373 miles to the tank – but will it ever be made? When Porsche made a one-of-a-kind 918 Spyder electric hybrid sports marvel, I asked the price. They said $845,000. I passed (and almost passed out). When BMW (a car maker I’ve always loved), developed the electric hybrid sports car they called the i8, I ordered one. But after half a year of waiting, the salesman said it would be three more years before I would get my car. I cancelled my order.

I could go on. It was actually Thomas Edison who threw the switch on making the gas-powered car the vehicle of choice. Edison, the king of all things electric, met Henry Ford at a now historic dinner in 1896. The inventor listened to the car creator describe his idea of an ideal car – affordable, dependable, efficient, and requiring almost no maintenance. In fact, Ford wanted his car to be low priced and maintenance free. Edison heard all of this and slammed the table with his fist. He then said these now historic words to Ford. Young man, that’s the thing; you have it. Keep at it. Electric cars must keep near to power stations. The storage battery is too heavy. Steam cars won’t do, either, for they require a boiler and fire. Your car is self-contained – carries its own power plant – no fire, no boiler, no smoke, and no steam. You have the thing. Keep at it.

Ford listened. As a result, Ford moved the world with his new car, which was a public hit. The electric car drifted out of awareness, except for a few failed attempts over the decades at resurrection, and the fossil fuel driven car won the race. By 1919, virtually all electric car production was stopped, and the electric began to fade away. It wouldn’t be until the 1970s, when gasoline prices

Today the marketplace is ready for an electric (or solar, or sea water, or any environmentally safe) car that’s affordable, dependable, convenient, and attractive. Tesla is working in that direction. I’ll keep watching them, and other automakers like Audi, Acura, and Nissan, to see who wins the next race. I may be a specialist in how to attract a new car, but the car also has to exist. Meanwhile, we now have Nerissa’s 2017 Chevy Volt. Let’s charge up and go. Specialists in the psychological and physiological application of sound. –Seen on the side of a Muzak truck, many decades ago.

C

an’t get much more straightforward than that, huh? An online search for Muzak found a Muzak.com description that read Founders of piped music and the science of how music affects the behavior of customers. Click on it, and you go to MoodMedia.com, whose home page slogan starts out We put people in the mood to stay and rotates to in the mood to eat, invest, relax – and, finally – buy. And you thought that old slogan was straightforward.

In the beginning… Neither of those slogans holds a candle, though, to the first line of the Book of John in the New Testament. In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God. John doesn’t let on what the word was (hopefully, it wasn’t buy), but he makes it pretty clear that, if a word can create a world, sound is a powerful thing. God isn’t the only one who knows that. Rock and rollers, Disney, and big-box retailers know it, and use it shamelessly. There’s a misconception that subliminal messages, delivered just below the threshold of perceived sound, are illegal – but if you’ve ever wondered why folks remain cheerful standing in line for hours for a five-minute amusement park ride in the Magic Kingdom while inane music plays over and over, or why you feel a little weird in the Big Box and get lost in the parking lot, or why a rock and roll lyric from fifty years ago pops into your head and stays there all day, wonder no more.

The beat goes on. Yep. They’re in your head. The right rhythm, the right balance of sound and silence, can do anything. It can make you buy, make you docile, or make you crazy. Don’t much care for that? There’s an antidote. Get quiet – and listen.

8

Stop the world. Curtis Cripe, founder of the Crossroads Institute, developed protocols for ADHD by strengthening neural pathways, pretty much like you’d exercise a weak muscle. He felt one contributing factor was that kids, through overexposure to video games, mobile phones, and other electronic devices, developed pathways for visual processing way too early, at the expense of auditory processing. They hear but don’t understand, because the brain can’t translate what they hear into information – and this was before two-year-olds had smartphones, before an entire generation grew up as “digital natives.” Now, phones and earbuds and such have become a substitute for real interaction, a shield against the world. People routinely walk into traffic – or, literally (in the literal sense of literally), off the end of piers – because they’re off somewhere on the Phone Planet. If your electronic puppy is sleeping by your bed, ready to wake you up every morning, it might be time to – hey! Are you even listening?

Oh, well. Got a call coming in, anyway. If you’re reading this towards the end of September, chances are you’re in town for another of Austin’s legendary music fests. Chances are also good you won’t know what a good time you had until you download it later – but, hey, thanks for reading. If the mood strikes, take a minute to do what signs used to say at train crossings. Stop. Look. Listen.

Raziel. September’s cover art by San Antonio artist Karen Reines is inspired by the energy of archangel Raziel, said to have sat at God’s side, listened carefully, and transcribed that wisdom into a book he passed on to Adam and Eve after they were booted out of the garden. (No word on whether he supplied them with blue leaves to wear.) His message? Listen – with your heart.

SOUND AWARENESS Building your personal soundtrack The eye takes a person into the world. The ear brings the world into a human being. – Lorenz Oken by Erik Dunton You are continuously surrounded by a personal soundtrack. It may begin with the sound of traffic, or songbirds outside your window. It may include the rhythm of woodpeckers, a dripping faucet, or the vibration of a nearby train, punctuated by the resonance of a truck horn or the laughter of children. Your personal soundtrack is with you all the time, perpetually changing songs and instrumentation. This everchanging soundtrack evolves as you move through time and space, and you might add to it by singing, humming, or tapping your finger, or by the rhythmic pattern of your walk.

Music and sound touch you, and influence your emotions and your general wellbeing. You’re constantly being vibrated, on a cellular level, by audible and inaudible sound frequencies. Some of the sounds

you may find pleasant and calming, some you find annoying or irritating. Your job, as the listener, is to discover and encourage what’s pleasing to you. You do this through conscious awareness of your personal soundtrack. If you don’t set your intentions to focus on music and sounds that are beneficial to you, you might be allowing this soundtrack to create stress – and chronic stress can have long-lasting, unhealthy consequences on your wellbeing.

Music and sound are nutrients for your nervous system and your body. They enter your auditory system, which is a portal to the brain and the entire body. Music and sound can also be used to change your mood and emotions and profoundly revitalize your immune and nervous systems, and these positive effects are instantaneous and long lasting. You can choose to ignore the soundtrack around you, and its effects, or you can purposefully choose to listen, and embrace it. You can also actively participate in changing it, using music, rhythm, song, sounds, and frequencies to create balance – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Erik Dunton of Positive RePercussions is a Restorative Musician and Motivational Drummer, using the transformative energy of music, rhythm and sound as a positive force in individuals’ lives. Positive RePercussions program offerings include classes, corporate development, and clinical application for addiction recovery, stress, and depression. The Rhythm and Resonance workshop, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, includes group drumming, guided imagery, and meditative sonic immersion. SPIRIT’S RESPONSE Spiritual Response Therapy and Spiritual Restructuring by Elizabeth Aguilar Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT), developed in 1985 by Unitarian minister Robert Detzler, is an evolving spiritual educational system designed to access information directly from Spirit. An SRT practitioner is trained to find patterns of negative energy and clear them from your subconscious, using special charts and a pendulum. Using the pendulum can bypass the conscious rational mind, and using charts can go beyond a simple yes or no ideomotor response to find more specific, detailed, and valuable information to transform the soul’s energy template.

Before incarnation, the soul chooses its programing for this life. These programs can be transferred throughout lifetimes if unresolved. SRT can potentially locate specific programs hindering your life and growth on a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual level, and then clear them. Spiritual Restructuring (SpR), an expanded aspect of SRT, brings together spiritual and physical aspects to adjust, transmute, and balance vibrations in your energy field, using pure spiritual intention, breath, and fingertips to direct spiritual energy to: t &BTF NVTDMF UFOTJPO DPSSFDU TQJOBM NJTBMJHONFOUT t $MFBS CPEZ CMPDLBHFT BOE USBQQFE FNPUJPOT t 3FQBJS UIF FUIFSJD CPEZ TZTUFN XJUI QTZDIJD TVSHFSZ eliminating psychic wounds and scarring. t "QQMZ FOFSHFUJD BOE WJCSBUJPOBM SFTUPSBUJWF FOFSHJFT to strengthen and balance the brain, organs, and glands. t %PXOMPBE BOE BQQMZ TQFDJĂśD SFKVWFOBUJOH QSPDFTTFT to help re-harmonize and restructure body systems, to help integrate the clearing into your new paradigm.

Past, present, future. Over time, a practitioner can find and transmute past, present, and future self-limiting patterns, layer by layer, reducing negative subconscious tendencies. Clearing sessions can work in any area of your life, offering a deeper understanding of life’s challenges and a more loving relationship with yourself and Spirit. Both SRT and SpR can be done on the phone, much like having an everyday conversation with a dear friend. SRT and SpR are alternative spiritual approaches and educational tools, not intended to diagnose, cure, or take the place of licensed medical professionals. Elizabeth Aguilar is a trained SRT and SpR practitioner, intuitive healer, empath, certified Qi Gong instructor, Reiki Master, mindbody educator, and cranialsacral therapist. BRIDGES BETWEEN WORLDS

Spirit totems and the Hanafuda Long ago, it’s said, when humans first came on the Earth, animals were their guides, friends, and protectors. They’ve walked beside us on our spirtual path ever since. Shamans, healers, and warriors have tapped into the magic that animals can still see, magic humans started to forget as they got civilized. Totems were ways to carry spirit animals, represented by an image, or even part of the animal itself – an eagle feather for courage, a coyote skin for stealth. The Hollywood version of totem poles next to teepees and cactus, however, is horrifically inaccurate – totem poles of Native people were mostly carved in the Pacific Northwest to record tribal history or family lineage.

Creating a totem. Find the right tree, cut it down, carve it into a totem. Takes way more time, energy, and resources than most artists can invest nowadays, but paper is made from wood and can hold the same energy. Over time, in other cultures, cards became another type of totem, portable paintings that could hold the archetypal energy of the forces of nature. Like Tarot cards, Japanese Hanafuda flower cards had a dual purpose, starting as playing cards but eventually becoming spiritual tools representing flowers, animals, and spiritual archetypes called brights. Sioux Storm is a visionary artist, energy healer, and greatgranddaughter of a Lakota medicine woman who paints totem spirit portraits by intuitively tuning in to the spirit of a person with their animal guides, and who also works with the Hanafuda. The colors of her portratis, she says, have been known to change as their subject’s energy evolves.

The Fifth World. Even if we don’t have direct access to the magic of the world we once had, totems are meditation tools, tapping into mysteries human eyes and hearts sometimes miss. The Hopi and other Native people say we’re moving into the Fifth World, the world of humankind. The inhabitants of the Fourth World, the world of animals, were here to greet us. We’re not leaving them behind. Their spirits are showing us the way. Sioux Storm returns to Austin to create Totem Spirit Portraits at the Metaphysical and Holistic Expo, October 1-2 at Marchesa Hall, joining Jaime Shine for the Cherry Blossom Healing Circle October 4, based on the energy of the Hanfuda brought through by Master Teacher Selena Rodriguez. Say YES TH THE HE EVERYDAY ART OF KAREN REINE REIN REINES NE ES S Think of art. Conjures up an image of a painting on a wall, maybe a sculpture in a museum – nice, but tough to carry around. San Antonio artist Karen Reines sees art as an everyday thing, something you can carry around, as easily as a tote bag, a journal, or meditative cards. Bags, journals, and cards became the everyday showcase for her work – but her path to becoming an artist and designer was anything but everyday.

Gifts. Art is a gift, and hers came when she was three, when her mom gave her crayons and watched her disappear into another world. She studied illustration, photography, and fine art, became a naturopath, and then another gift arrived, direct from the Divine. She said yes. Mercy

Love Mandala

Her intuitive abilities kicked in, kicking her out of the world of landscapes and portraits into an abstract world of paints and dyes with their own fluid magic. Her guides were angels and oracles – now, she says, “I create art that heals.” Her Waking Angels collection became a bridge between Earthly and spiritual realms, complete with messages from loved ones, angels, and the Divine. The Say Yes line of accessories (handcrafted in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, and soon to include T-shirts) became an easy way to bring the magic of the message into everyday life. The clearest message she wants her art to convey? “This world is a mere touchstone – and there are wonders beyond our imagination.” www.WakingAngels.com www.SayYesBags.com Peace

SPIT SHINES What substance in your body contains calcium, hormones, antibacterial elements, powerful painkillers and antidepressants, breaks down carbohydrates, and fights bad breath? (Hint – it also takes the spin right off a fastball, and, combined with polish, makes a damn good shoeshine.) Yep – saliva. Good ol’ spit. by Matthew Carpenter, DDS Saliva is basically filtered blood. The salivary glands run red blood cells, which are better off in your arteries, through a sieve, allowing calcium, hormones, and components of your immune system to enter. Everyone’s saliva is a little different, and can be used to test for certain hormones and immune diseases. The main salivary glands, the parotid and sublingual glands, drain into the mouth though the parotid papillae, a couple of tiny bumps on the inside of the cheeks around the upper molars, and the sublingual papillae, behind the lower front teeth. (You can feel the parotid gland, upward from your neck to your cheeks – two soft, slightly swollen areas, just below the ears.) The parotid gland immediately secretes saliva on demand, whenever it’s needed, like when you eat. Glands in the floor of the mouth behind the lower front teeth, however, secrete saliva continuously – 1.5 to 2 pints per day, or .7 of a liter (almost a wine bottle’s worth). The sole function of these glands is to make teeth harder by secreting saliva high in calcium, which also alkalizes the oral cavity, making harmful bacteria less active.

Killing the pain. Saliva has a painkiller stronger than morphine – opiorphin, discovered in 2006. Built in pain-reducing mechanisms in the mouth are important when you consider what it does. There are more nerve endings there than almost anywhere else in the body, making the mouth extremely sensitive – explaining why bad dental experiences generate traumatic memories and deep fear. That also explains why you can feel a hair in your mouth, a food particle between your teeth, or a grain of dirt or sand from poorly washed veggies – and why a mouth ulcer is relatively small, but hurts more than almost any other lesion its size in the body. Opiorphin is secreted when you chew, reducing pain in the oral cavity from hot or sharp foods – that’s why a sore throat is temporarily better after a meal.

14

Studies suggest opiorphin has antidepressant properties, which may be why you feel comforted with some foods, or crave them during high stress. (When life’s beat me down, a great hamburger hits the spot like Chuck Norris, temporarily chasing away the blues.) Besides strengthening teeth and providing pain reduction, saliva is the first step in the breakdown of carbohydrates, and also produces bactericidal substances to keep pathogenic bacteria you might ingest in check. Mucins, a component of mucus, act as sticky nets to trap bacteria until little antibacterial substances in your saliva move in and kill them off, before they have a chance to get in your bloodstream though your oral tissues and harm you.

Morning mouth and the Ring of Waldeyer. As you control levels of bacteria in the mouth, you reduce bad breath. Morning breath is partly due to the fact you produce very little saliva while you sleep, so bacteria levels increase, making your breath smell worse. (Brushing and flossing before you go to bed is a good idea if you want to reduce stinky morning mouth.) Another immunological component of your oral cavity is the lingual tonsils at the very back your tongue, where it attaches to your throat. They’re master samplers, taking samples of everything you swallow into a little nodule with many different immune cells that collect information, and begin educating your immune system about potential threats They’re one component in a network of tonsils in the mouth and throat called Waldheyer’s Ring, which also includes tongue tonsils and palatine tonsils, which are what we think of as tonsils. (If you’ve had your tonsils removed, you’ve only had one component of the tonsillar network removed.) Research indicates the gut is a significant part, maybe the epicenter, of your immune, nervous, and cognitive systems. It’s your oral cavity, though, that determines what happens in your gut and the rest of your digestive and eliminatory system, and is its first line of protection against invaders. Keep your mouth healthy and spit-shined, and everything else is a lot more likely to stay healthy. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, and genotype testing for susceptibility to mercury toxicity. THEY ARE THE

CHAMPIONS

How elite athletes recover from injury and get back in the game disconnection, or loss of integration, between injured tissue and the master control system of the body.

The secret of champions?

by Dr. Ryan Osborne The aftermath of the exciting fever of the Rio Games is a good time to reflect on champions that seemingly defy the limits of human performance. What separates champions from runners up? The obvious answer would be superior genetics. Comparing champions to others (like myself ) with no hope of becoming gold medalists, genetic differences are unquestionable, but even someone with the best genetics in the history of human existence has to train relentlessly and overcome injuries to become a champion. Even elite athletes with comparable genetics and training routines often define their legacy by how they recover and bounce back from injury. The best of the best, athletes that repeat and three-peat, have a secret that allows them to stand out and rise above their competition. It’s a secret that provides injury recovery, prevention, and legally enhanced performance, and it’s not reserved for champions. While genetics may keep you out of the Summer Games, using the secret of champions can help you quickly recover from injuries, return to recreation or competition better than before, and help prevent future injury and chronic pain – but first, a little about human performance.

Change your body chemistry, and you change your performance. Athletes know this, and some engage in illegal means of changing chemistry, hoping to maximize human performance – and it works. Things like anabolic steroids, amphetamines, and human growth hormone are very effective, but have other effects. Artificial performance enhancement comes at a price. Hair loss, acne, aggression, heart and kidney disease, cancer, and sudden death are the true cost of artificially changing body chemistry to enhance performance. Instead, see the body as a symphony of chemicals. Mixing metaphors, you have a symphony – and the most powerful pharmacy ever created – inside of you. The symphony conductor, and the pharmacist, is your master control system – your nervous system. Like a supercomputer operating 24/7/365, your brain constantly analyzes information from your body, altering chemistry based on current needs. When finely tuned and in balance, humans are capable of incredible performance, but injuries often result in

They respect the symphonic chemical balance, and utilize next-level therapies that work naturally with the body’s master control system. When injury inevitably occurs, the champion’s therapeutic goal is reintegration of injured tissue to the nervous system as quickly and completely as possible. Dynamic therapies that accomplish quick reintegration work with your inborn pharmacy to alter body chemistry, naturally restoring and enhancing performance – without the costly side effects associated with adaptation. Adaptation happens when an injury is ignored or untreated. Think of wild animals, who have to adapt to survive. Healing is slow and incomplete, with obvious biomechanical compensation and functional disadvantage. A step above adaptation is strategic adaptation, which gives a false indication of healing – and can do so for decades. Strategic adaptation is injury treatment that allows you to resume previous activity, but slightly alters biomechanics, causing increased soft tissue stress and accelerated breakdown. Performance is never quite as good as before the injury, and the end result is usually chronic pain – and premature retirement. Many therapies ultimately create more strategic adaptation than true healing, which only occurs when injured tissue is completely reintegrated to the body’s master control system, by finding the source of injury and compensation. Next-level techniques – like Advanced Muscle Integration Technique, a precise tool with the potential to analyze and enhance human performance organically, without drugs or surgery – often seem like a hack, or shortcut, because the body is able to recover much faster when its inborn healing potential is activated. AMIT, in fact, gained much of its worldwide attention by quickly returning Olympic athletes to competition, performing even better than before they were injured.

You can always tell athletes that choose quick fix patch jobs. They hang up their cleats early and show up in drug commercials for more of the same garbage that got them in that situation. Chronic pain flat out stinks, and robs you of quality of life – but the wonderful truth is that chronic pain is most often avoidable. Dr. Ryan Osborne of Enhance Performance Center has blended AMIT and other next-level techniques into a truly holistic and evolving practice. (512) 255-9711, www.GetHealthyRoundRock.com

DEPRESSION A Spiritual Crisis

by Christina Allen It’s a gloominess that descends upon you like a thick, water-soaked blanket. Colors fade to shades of gray, joy becomes completely inaccessible, and sadness overtakes your body. While this is experienced briefly by many wading through loss or grief, to others depression takes up permanent residence in their psyches. The outside person sees their relentless sadness as unwarranted, as physically they look quite capable. While they may be, on many levels, the depressed person is caught within a quicksand of hopelessness inside that pulls from them their very will to survive.

“I can’t.” In science, animal models are used to study depression. In one model, a dog is restrained by a cage on a platform, where it receives a mild shock regularly. Once the animal realizes it cannot escape this shocking it withdraws, expecting it will never end. Eventually, the dog is put on the platform without the cage, but it doesn’t leave, even when it can. It stands there and continues to be shocked. This is called learned helplessness. A high percentage of individuals who suffer from long-term depression are sensitive, intelligent people that experience overwhelming fear. Their active minds have literally backed them into a corner they cannot think themselves out of. The ego is the part of ourselves that gives us identity. It also keeps us safe. A depressed person starts to identify with the parts of the ego that think, “I can’t.” This undermines their efforts, until it becomes true. They then retreat and stop participating with the world, giving them nothing to identify with but the suffering of being so isolated. Much like the dog on the platform, their experiences to date tell them they cannot escape, so they lose their will to try. For many, death looks like the only way out. In our culture, we treat depression as a mental illness. We assume that whatever’s going on in the mind has thrown the body completely out of balance. We prescribe medications to reboot the brain, so the will to survive returns. We suggest

16

counseling to get to the bottom of whatever issues may have triggered this darkness. To be sure, the body’s primary directive is to live, but the depressed person’s ego can no longer be who it has been. It wants out. No amount of reasoning and processing, however, is going to make it feel safe enough to dismantle its cage.

Therein lies the conundrum. The ego is asking for a death it knows it cannot survive. While there is a physical and mental aspect to it, at its heart depression is a spiritual crisis. The only way out is to bypass the ego and connect with the soul. To get off of that platform, we have to transcend the part of the mind that identifies with the suffering, the part that believes it is alone on the planet without support. It believes this because, like the dog, it has experienced this over and over. To convince that dog that it’s free, you must lead it off the platform – it must experience its freedom before it will ever believe it has any. While medication may numb the symptoms and jumpstart the will, and counseling may sooth the pain, ultimately depression requires a spiritual intervention. When a person has a spiritual experience, their ego, or sense of self, dissolves, and they remember who they are at the level of the soul. In shamanic traditions, the client is guided to a place outside time where they experience their eternity, their freedom. Here they can safely release the fear and limited beliefs that define their current human identity. As they wipe this slate clean and experience the ego death they’ve been asking for, they experience the spiritual rebirth they’ve so been longing for – and can begin anew. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). What’s your Vibration? by John Randolph Price Break your vibration down into four parts – abundance, wellness, success, and loving relationships – and rate each one with a number: 20-16 is Excellent, 15-11 Good, 10-6 Fair, 5-1 Poor. Add up the numbers for each category and divide by four. For example, a total of 52 would equal 13, the mid-range of Good. Remember the great Universal Power meets you on the level where you are in consciousness. This Love, Wisdom and Infinite Givingness radiates through at every moment in time and space, manifesting the tone and pitch of your heart-mind vibration. If your belief system registers a 7 in the abundance category, the outpicturing in the external world will be “just getting by.” God can do for us only what God can do through us. Spirit is always doing Its part. We are the ones who limited the Great Unlimited, with our states of consciousness.

Why can’t we believe the Truth? Spirit sees us as whole, abundantly supplied with every good thing, and living a life of love, joy and peace. But somewhere along the line we made the choice to see an illusion. We saw ourselves as ill when we weren’t, experienced scarcity, a lie, and found ourselves in situations of conflict that were nothing but projections. Pure Light shining through a slide doesn’t change the slide or the projection. It simply projects it into the phenomenal world as perceived reality. The answer is to focus more on the Invisible than the visible. It’s to make a definite commitment to Holiness within, releasing your commitment to improving the physical world. Spirit is definitely more important than anything “out there” – but even that will change dramatically when you’re in tune with the Truth of your Being.

Energy follows thought! Now, see-feel-know Divine Energy is shining forth, bringing Heaven to Earth through this new altitude of consciousness. And remember that attraction always follows radiation, the manifest good flowing back to you on the rays shining from within. That’s the Law. Express your gratitude as your life shifts to reveal the work, will, and way of Spirit. Adapted from the Quartus Report. You’re in Charge

by Michael Abedin Great news – a bill requiring labeling of food products using genetically modified ingredients has been signed into law. Soon, you can glance at a label to know you’re eating something probably soaked in herbicides, the reason for most genetic tweaking.

Hah. You didn’t really think it would be that easy, did you? The DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act became law in July, so you can get a smartphone app, scan a QR code, go to a corporate website, and – well, that’s irrelevant. Non-mandatory, no penalties, doesn’t go into effect for a couple of years – assuming you’re willing to go to all that hassle in a grocery store. It is, in technical terms, a complete crock, perpetrated by an alliance of poison merchants like Monsanto and Bayer – corporations that earned their chops making Agent Orange and Zyklon B, the active ingredient in Nazi gas chambers, and trademarking heroin.

Nice folks. A major propaganda machine always cranks up to fight labeling initiatives, and the big guns came out to ensure the House and Senate went DARK. Doesn’t matter the herbicide – glyphosate, or Roundup – was classified a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization, showing up in breast milk, urine, organic eggs, craft beer, and every one of a sampling of California wines, including organics. One investment firm nailed it, calling Monsanto “the quintessential example of a corporation that exists exclusively to maximize materialistic self-interest, regardless of the to society. So – what can you do?

Good news, bad news, good news. Good news? Sales of organics are increasing, most Americans polled want true labeling, Monsanto’s being hit by lawsuits from people who maintain Roundup gave them cancer, and some big companies say they’ll start labeling on their own. Bad news? Bad guys never give up, seeing any setback as temporary until they get everything they want – control of the world’s food supply. George Altgelt, of Geo Growers, is one of those guys who know something about everything. (What natural method does he use for fire ants? “I don’t. They eat fleas and ticks. I leave them alone).

Control what you can. Buy organic, find non-GMO vendors, grow your own produce. George is a master soil blender, offering some gardening tips – know your source of soil, use organic seeds and plant starters, research companies before you purchase supplies. First and foremost, he says, don’t use toxic chemicals to prevent weeds – they affect plant formation, even at .1 parts per million. “The canary in the coalmine is tomatoes and fava beans, the most sensitive to herbicides of all plants. Chemical treatments don’t just harm plant life and the environment, though. They’re endocrine disruptors in human cell lines, screwing up androgenic and estrogenic systems – sex hormones. “Everyone needs to be concerned, especially parents. In the late 1980s, twenty-five percent of the American population was diagnosed with cancer, increasing to thirty-three percent by the 1990s. Now it’s forty percent.

Why? “Part of it is the horrifically toxic chemicals entering the food supply through agriculture. Raising your own food in raised bed gardens lessens the burden of toxic substances entering your body, along with increased mineralization of produce consumed from your own garden. Portable raised beds, he says, make gardening a lot easier than you think. “Just engaging in the gardening process creates an exchange with nature that demonstrates how intimately connected you are to what you eat – and what you become. George Altgelt will speak at Austin’s Awesmic City Expo, 0DUPCFS t XXX (FP(SPXFST OFU

What if Depression is a Symptom of Food Allergies? by Nerissa Oden Struggled with depression for a long time, but still haven’t been helped by prescription medications, therapy, and appropriate exercise? You may have treatment-resistant depression. As many as one-third of all people receiving traditional treatment for depression with medications and therapy don’t respond within the first year. Traditional medical resources state the cause of most cases of depression is unknown, and they’re presumed to be a chemical or hormonal imbalance, or possibly a genetic defect, a defective character trait, or inability to overcome a traumatic situation.

One in ten adults in America are being treated for depression. That considered, the number of treatment-resistant depression cases is staggering, as is their cost. Persistent chronic depression can alter lives, causing loss of jobs and relationships with family and friends, and even spiraling into homelessness and suicide. The good news is doctors who research healthy lifestyles and natural treatments have noticed two patterns in brain research – food triggers, and inflammation. Your doctor may have already suggested you avoid certain foods that have been identified as triggers for depression for many people – sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils and trans fat (partially hydrogenated oils), excessive salt, alcohol, and caffeine. Aside from food triggers, nutritional deficiencies may play a role. A deficiency in Vitamin D, B12, and other nutrients have been linked to depression in many cases.

Learned nothing new up to this point? You may be interested to learn that depression has been linked to inflammation in the brain. Hydrogenated oils and sugar are known to generate inflammation, so reduce or eliminate these and other trigger foods. Hidden food allergies also create inflammation, which can occur in any part of your body and create a wide variety of symptoms, including hidden inflammation in the brain. There’s evidence indicating combining anti-inflammatory medicines with antidepressants improves symptoms, and natural antiinflammatory options like omega-3 oils and curcumin are available. How do you identify and remove your unique food sensitivities from your diet? Go get tested! Nerissa Oden is a citizen advocate for food sensitivity education and testing. Also known as, hidden food allergies, food sensitivity identification through annual testing can be an important aspect of your health and wellness. Her first allergy-friendly cookbook, Bread-Free Bread, is available on Amazon.com. Visit her website, www.FoodPowers.com, for more information about food sensitivity.

What Would You Do as

President?

Book Review by Michael Abedin

What do you think is the secret to happiness? Is it money, power, or fame? I’d choose money. If you have enough money, you can buy power and fame. That way, you can have it all and be really happy. The part I think I’d like best is crushing people who get in my way. – Calvin, of Calvin and Hobbes. Sound like something from the presidential campaign? (C’mon, admit it.) Can’t blame you – but it’s actually some of Calvin’s summertime shade tree musings. If it’s that easy to mistake the philosophy of a cartoon six-year-old talking to his tiger for that of a presidential candidate, times may be dire. This ain’t been the most elevating election year ever, and will probably get worse before it gets – well, even worse. Imagine what you’d think if you were ninetyone, a proud US Marine, lived through the Great Depression, served in World War II and Korea, built railroads, supported the Boy Scouts, and raised four kids with your beloved wife.

No need to imagine. Joseph J. Vitale can tell you, in his second book, What I Would Do as U.S. President, published with the help of one of those four kids – Austin’s own Joe Vitale. The Heartwakers Club

HOW TO BE A BODY The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli Part of health is sexual health. It’s amazing so many people – including, for too long, myself – fail to grasp this deep, obvious truth. We cannot be our best selves, and certainly cannot have our best relationships, as long as we enable sexual dysfunction. Denying that fact denies a huge part of what it is to be human, including our greatest power and vulnerability. While there’s no one right way to express sexuality, it’s the seat of our creative power, and creativity is what allows our species to problem-solve and thrive in a world of shifting circumstance. “Sexual dysfunction doesn’t only refer to certain organs failing to cooperate. Sexuality can be hurtful, manipulative, predatory – collectively, what’s called rape culture, a term describing societies like ours where rape is prevalent. Really, it means anywhere sexuality is weaponized as part of a quest for power. Rape is the obvious symptom, but not the only problem. People of any sex, gender or orientation perpetuate rape culture when they use sexuality to control or exploit others. Why do campus workshops on consent fail to solve the problem? By the time kids raised in rape cultures reach college age, the violence is already done. It’s subtle, accidental – but the damage is real, an injury to the child’s sense of value as an embodied being.

Modern American childhood. Schools are phasing out recess, administering more tests, assigning more homework. The desire to move, play, and touch are treated as “inappropriate signs of “restlessness. Set schedules make it impossible for kids to honor (or even notice) their own bodily rhythms. The message? Bodies are irrelevant. Well-meaning parents, teachers, and coaches fail to realize it’s impossible to help kids grow into healthy, functional adults while forcing them to halt or ignore involuntary physical developments and normal markers of maturation, like social and sexual curiosity. This generates shame – and teenage angst. Stigmatized, repressed sexual energy can’t fully bloom – it comes out warped, politicized, embarrassed. Likewise, when intellectual reasoning is coerced prematurely, it’s not balanced with empathy and receptivity. This combination turns adolescence into a landmine of mixed signals about how – and even whether – to grow up. It’s no wonder, upon graduating from an artificially dictated puberty, we get adults that aren’t very mature.

They’re out of sync with their own bodies. Dulling their empathy for other bodies and the emotions bodies generate, their concept of “other remains an intellectual abstraction, something subject to mind games and rationalizations – the forerunners of physical violence. These pseudo adults linger in a self-centered identity, never initiated into a collective one. Lacking security to communicate honestly, they depend on alcohol and other gimmicks to navigate social risk. How can we support kids in developing full health, including sexual and psycho-emotional health? Consider three ways to tweak your influence on kids’ developing sense of embodiment: t %PO U TIBNF EJTDPWFSZ It’s hard for adults to let kids take the lead on anything, but when it comes to their own bodies, we need to back off. You can still wipe boogers and tell them to take their hands out of their pants, but without humiliation. Teach them hygiene and manners – but not tied to disgust, or making them feel bad for asking questions or comparing parts. t )BWF iUIF UBMLw B MPU Don’t wait until your kid’s hormonal to have one big, awkward conversation. Take opportunities as they arise to explain consent, respect, privacy, personal taste – topics coming up before sexual development, through play and daily life, offering ways to present the concept of boundaries. t %PO U DVU UIF DPSE Mother Earth is our greater body, tying all bodies together. Don’t sever kids from nature. Let them get dirty, explore, feel at home in their habitat, and they’ll feel at home in their bodies.

None of this will work without addressing your own hang-ups. Ask how you belittle embodiment. Eating things that make you unwell? Bad-talking your figure, hiding from cameras? Critiquing others for their weight, dating habits, cosmetic choices? Children notice these things, and consciously or not they learn physical selfhood is secondary at best, shameful at worst. Find ways to be better to yourself, and the lessons will speak for themselves. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Is it a good choice to live in Mexico with my boyfriend, Javier? Alia, Austin, TX Dear Alia, It looks like Javier is more of a companion than a true blue boyfriend at this time. However, I think you should not move to Mexico for several reasons – he’s either high or low, this or that, moody or flaky, unusually melancholy, thus you are in the right place if you stay put. True love will find you. Your guardian angel is Sandalfon.

Dear Ashtara, Much gratitude! What do I need to do for my health? What does my wife Binta need to do for her health? And who is my highest angel teacher? Thank you, Minesh, Austin, TX Dear Minesh, You both need a little calcium. And, she needs more protein. Your protein level is fine. If you have a juicer that extracts the pulp, you both could juice oranges, carrots and pineapple three times a month for nine months. Also, juice carrots, pineapple and red apples three times a month for nine months to boost your immune systems and clean out your bodies. Binta’s highest teacher is Sandalfon, and your highest teacher is Ashtar.

Dear Ashtara, After a long absence from academics I am seriously considering applying for a teaching position at a major Texas university. Am I totally setting myself up for rejection or do I stand a chance? Also, might I have any romantic involvement at all with a nice man? Lydia, 64, Austin, TX Dear Lydia, As far as romance, someone will get your attention. Therefore, put yourself out there. Getting a job

is one way to do it. Get into a rhythm of delightfulness, beautiful spirit, and authenticity. When you become all of that, your vision will take place. Your highest teacher is Gabriel.

Dear Ashtara, What is my life purpose and why am I here? I have trouble deciding what I should go to school for. I am a seeker of the truth, hoping to find answers for my path. Alexa, 25, Austin, TX Dear Alexa, You were born to be an anthropologist, scientist or someone who delves into oceans, seas and water systems. However, my favorite for you is anthropologist. You might be able to get a grant for your entire education. On the next list of careers comes lawyer, engineer, artist, architect, and design. My favorite is still anthropologist. Read about anthropology and see if you are not interested. You are destined to be quite substantial in health, wealth, and relationships. However, you must go to school and get an enormous career. Your present path is to become educated within a spectrum of any of the topics listed above. Your high teacher is Melchizedek and your angel is Gabriel. Good luck.

Priestess? by Morgan Susan Taylor The High Priestess is a timeless feminine archetype of power and intuition, an intermediary between physical and spiritual worlds who gracefully navigates and facilitates communication between them. She’s a pathway to the Divine, and a conduit for receiving and disseminating Divine wisdom. Those who embody the priestess archetype are often: t *O UIF IFMQJOH QSPGFTTJPO Coaches, healers, counselors, teachers. t )JHIMZ DSFBUJWF Dancers, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, sales professionals, corporate businesswomen. t )JHIMZ TFOTJUJWF May get easily overwhelmed, experiencing bouts of anxiety, depression, self doubt. t )JHIMZ JOUVJUJWF Feels others’ feelings easily, may have difficulty discerning their own emotions and thoughts from those of others.

#FJOH B 1SJFTUFTT IBT OPUIJOH UP EP XJUI SFMJHJPO A priestess is an archetype, a role, a way of being in the world. When a woman learns to embody that archetype consciously, she’s learning to master realms of the spiritual and physical. Regardless of religion. spiritual beliefs, or profession, you’re probably already using some of these skills without realizing it. Most of us live according to perceived rules and limitations of the physical world, unconsciously accepting beliefs and perceptions about reality that keep us locked into old patterns, old ways of being and believing, that keep us stuck and limited. This eventually leads to feelings of frustration, disconnection, confusion, and a sense of powerlessness. We tend to think because some pattern has been hanging around a long time, it’s going to take a long time to change it.

5IBU TJNQMZ JT KVTU OPU GSFBLJO USVF You can change a pattern in an instant. The Priestess understands the physical realm is nothing more than a reflection of her own mind. To change the world, she learns to change her mind, consistently altering her perception to see things as they really are. She trains herself to see things the way the Divine sees them – and from her seat of elevated knowing, she uses her wisdom to change the course of her life, and help others do the same.
