Cruise ‘n Silsbee

Southeast Texas car enthusiasts look forward to fall and to Cruise ‘N Silsbee.

The annual event provides two days of activities and is a fundraiser benefitting a number of Southeast Texas nonprofit organizations.

This year the event falls on the weekend of September 23rd.

Mexican Heritage Festival PORT ARTHUR SEPT. 10, 2016!

The Mexican Heritage Society’s 48th Annual Fiesta is set for Sept. 10, 2016.

The event features pageants, contests, dance shows and concerts. Food vendors will provide a feast of delicious Mexican dishes including an array of various types of taquitos and everyone’s favorite, corn in a cup.

Entertainment will feature the Mexican dance music including Sandy G y Los Gavilanes. “The band is popular, has a great sound and plays a good variety of music including cumbias and polkas guaranteed to satisfy everyone’s dancing preference”, said Robert Moreno, the Society’s vice president.

Gloria Moreno, society president, said the Fiesta is about “keeping the culture alive and sharing the beauty of our heritage with the community.”

Dancers from age 6 to adult will be featured among this year’s 42 Ballet Folklorico performers.

Ballet Folklorico combines history, culture and religion with movement and vividly colorful costumes to reflect the cultural differences of the various states and regions of Mexico.

Other events include: tamale eating contest, children’s costume contest, mariachis, Parade of Mexican States, and Queen’s Court Promenade.

The Queen pageant provides young Mexican American women with academic scholarships and the opportunity to represent their heritage throughout the community.

The Fiesta celebrates Mexican Independence from Spain, observed each Sept. 16.

It can be challenging for moms to effectively assist our parents and in-laws in Southeast Texas.

The Southeast Texas Senior Expo series is a great opportunity to help seniors make a meaningful in person connection with senior service providers from across Jefferson, Hardin, Tyler, and Orange Counties.

The event was designed from the ground up to equally benefit seniors and the organizations and businesses that serve them.

The series is designed for 55+, and vendors will educate seniors about a wide range of topics including exercise, financial and retirement planning, home health care, and Medicare Advantage Plans. The event will conclude with several rounds of BINGO – and great prizes.

Many Southeast Texas parents want their child to have an opportunity to share in that musical legacy.

One great option is getting your child involved with the Guitar Lesson Studio in Lumberton.

They offer students the chance to learn guitar, piano, or bass.

One of the things that children really appreciate is the chance to learn songs they want to play.

When I took piano lessons as a child, I do not ever remember getting to pick a song, or even a genre of music, that I wanted to play.

By playing the songs they choose, kids stay engaged and practice enthusiastically.

We never have to tell our child to practice, and we hear him practicing in his room three or four times each day.

A few times each week, he’ll come into the living room or kitchen and show us what he’s been working on.

In a week or ten days, he’s pretty close to having a song down.

As a parent, it is great to see a child take ownership of his lessons.
