Two months ago, Seniors Standing Strong Founder posted a heartfelt request on Facebook for help for a senior citizen with a serious need in Lea County, and within hours of the posting, the lady was helped.

This is the post: A senior citizen called today. About 8 months ago, her electric meter caught on fire. She was not behind on her utility payments. But due to serious electrical concerns, her electric meter had to be pulled, and the apologetic worker told her she needed to contact and hire an electrician who could bring the wiring up to code, and then, she could have a meter and electricity restored to her home. She has contacted most everyone, organizations, electricians, anyone who would listen, over the past 8 months to find anyone who could help her, and finally, was given the Seniors Standing Strong phone number recently. She said she has been advised by electricians that some could do it for $1,700, others told her up to $3,500. So she has been living without electricity

all this time. She sleeps outside in her backyard because the house is so hot inside. She has to buy groceries the day she eats them because she has no electricity for her refrigerator. She uses battery operated lights at night.

Those she talked with would not let her pay it out and want their full invoice paid upon completion. She is willing to pay it out. She lives on $1,243.00/month.

HAPPY ENDING: Within minutes, countless Lea County residents were responding with helpful solutions, sharing the post far and wide, and with offers to donate.

A kind donor who wishes to remain anonymous called with a quite generous donation, and due to that donation, Seniors Standing Strong and the donor were able to share the cost to have an electrician come out and take care of the wiring problems.

Lea County, New Mexico is a blessing. It’s a place where people pour out their hearts to help people they don’t even know. Deepest thanks to all who are so willing to help our seniors.

o many memories line the walls and shelves in this quaint, delectable restaurant. The food is homemade with a twist of a reminder of your Mother or Grandmother’s cooking.

The plates are heaped high, the portions will feed you two times over, so if you are not very hungry, eat what you can, and just take the rest home and enjoy it again later.

The additional ambiance of this place located just off of Main Street in Lovington, is the customer service with Leanne Williams and the staff there. A common comment is that it’s one of the friendliest places you will ever choose for your dining experience.

Ranchers, farmers, oilmen, businessmen and women, longtime residents of Lea County, friends, clientele, and neighbors for years have brought in memories, artifacts, and pieces of history that all tell a story, and all have a deep meaning about the roots of Lea County and the area.

Lazy 6, is open during the day, and is now opening on Friday evenings as well. The community loves to be able to have dinner now on Friday nights at the restaurant with family members who work during the day. But, remember that the restaurant takes cash only. Don’t take checks or credit cards, or you might need to put on an apron, wash dishes and earn your meal! The steak fingers, everyone says, are better than Buddy’s in Andrews, and the fresh onion rings, country gravy, and chicken strips are unmatched by anyone else. So if you have a hankerin’ for a home cooked meal, a lot of friendly trappings, and a great atmosphere, head on over to Lazy 6.

Did You Know That Senior Citizens 75 And Older In New Mexico Can Be Permanently Exempt From Serving On A Jury?

Many seniors, especially those in precarious situations ask what to do if a jury summons is received in the mail.

Below are a few portions of New Mexico Statutes that seniors should know.

B. A person who is seventy-five years of age or older who files an affidavit requesting an exemption from jury service with a local court shall be permanently exempt from jury service.

G. As used in this section and Section 38-5-1 NMSA 1978, “undue or extreme physical or financial hardship”: (1) means circumstances in which a person would: (a) be required to abandon another person under the person’s care or supervision due to the extreme difficulty of obtaining an appropriate substitute caregiver during the period of jury service; (b) incur costs that would have a substantial adverse impact on the payment of necessary daily living expenses of the person or the person’s dependent; or (c) suffer physical hardship that would result in illness or disease.

About Senior Confidential Magazine Senior Confidential Magazine is a publication of Seniors Standing Strong, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The purpose of the nonprofit is to help senior citizens in Lea County by paying for some needs, especially emergency needs that can’t be afforded on a fixed income, and by helping seniors and their families with information and direction regarding many questions that arise. Over 500 senior citizens and their families have been helped through this program and Seniors Standing Strong is grateful for the support of community through donations, grants, and supporting initiatives such as this magazine and the charity golf tournament.

Several Senior Citizens in Lea County have called in a panic. One said she didn’t have water.

She called a plumber and said she was advised that it was a pipe that needed to be dug up and replaced and the cost would be $1,600.00. She borrowed the money from a family member. She said she fully expected a new pipe to be put in, but instead, new faucets were installed that she didn’t ask for, but she was charged on her bill for around $400 each for some of the faucets, and in full, she was charged the $1,600, and no pipe was replaced. She said she got a little water out of the deal, but no cold water and the company said it would be $1,600 more if she wanted that pipe fixed. Her water is now only a trickle. Another senior had some faucets replaced in her home by yet another company and after the faucets continued to malfunction, she had to call a second plumber. She said he advised her that the first plumber had utilized used, worn out parts. Be aware and ask questions before you pay. Make sure your worker has a license.

Listen to other senior citizens and learn from their experiences. In the long run, it could save you hundreds of dollars and help you to avoid being taken advantage of.

If a Medicaid recipient who is in a nursing home is married and the spouse lives in the family house, the house remains exempt until his or her death.

In all states, upon the death of the Medicaid recipient, the state will seek repayment of its Medicaid outlays that were made on behalf of the Medicaid recipient.

So, for example, if Mom was in the nursing home for two years and the state was paying the nursing home $4,000/month for her care, then the state will file a claim against Mom’s estate in the amount of $4,000 x 24 months = $96,000 upon her passing if she owns the home and has no spouse living there.

If a spouse is living in the family home after the loss of the Medicaid recipient in the nursing home, the living spouse may continue to live in his or her home and no action will be taken by the state to reclaim the house until after the remaining spouse who is living in the house passes.

If the house was still in Mom’s name at her death, then in order to repay the state the $96,000, the house will have to be sold. Any amount of proceeds in excess of the $96,000 can then be distributed under Mom’s will, e.g., typically to her children.

Not just any person will do, however. “You need friends you can talk to without being judged or criticized,” says Sadigh.

Homeless Senior Citizens Among Us Hold Hope For The Future Organizations, Police Backpacks, Blankets, and Soup Kitchen Helping Seniors

Most recent calculation of homeless in Lea County logged in at around 1,100 people living on the streets. There are senior citizens among them.

A senior living in his van moves from location to location, park to park for his temporary address across Lea County.

He has health problems, and doesn’t always eat right. Another senior tried to find help from shelters a while back, but couldn’t be accepted because she was on oxygen and had a dog. She said she would rather live in her car than give up her dog, the one constant companion in her life.

Others wander the streets in hope of finding shelter especially when the weather is extremely cold, hot, windy, snowy or wet.

There are those who don’t seem to mind being without a home, are content with their situations and would rather not have help, but those are few and far between. It’s not unusual to find a senior here and there who has been evicted for nonpayment of rent. and those especially with no family have a tough time knowing where to go because they can’t afford utilities and rent while paying for medications and bare necessities to live.

Maddox Foundation has assembled a work group of area organizations who are networking toward cumulative solutions to the homeless situation.

Hobbs Police Department has stepped up to the homeless situation in a big way by carrying blankets, especially in the Winter months to give to a homeless person.

The Department has a backpack program and officers carry the backpacks which are stuffed with necessity type items and sustenance for homeless individuals as they come across them on the streets of the community.

Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organization serving the needy in the area by serving over 3,000 hot meals per month.

Isaiah’s Kitchen feeds the hungry of Hobbs and is located at 304 W. Harden.

The percentage of seniors eating at the kitchen has risen drastically in the past few years. A hot meal goes a long way, and the boxes Isaiah’s gives seniors contain a variety of items for the pantry.

Massive Influx Of Senior Citizens Has Providers Scrambling To Keep Up With Demand For Services National Council On Aging National Findings With seniors living longer and more active lives, and with more than 77 million baby boomers turning 65 at a rate of 10,000 per day, the United States is experiencing historic growth in the 65-plus demographic. This growth is pressing communities to think differently and more broadly about a whole host of issues: housing, transportation, social services, cultural offerings, and health and wellness programs, to name just a few.

The ultimate question is: Are we as individuals and communities prepared to adequately serve the needs of an aging population?

ary Don and Nedra Reagan have touched literally thousands of lives over the past decades. They are the kind of people who would give you the shirt off of their back in a blizzard simply because they care deeply about humankind.

Gary Don, a Stanford University Graduate is a past President of the State Bar of New Mexico, and was a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners, he is a member of the NM Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee to the NM Compilation Commission and is listed in the American Institute of Legal Counsel “10 Best” Estate Planning Attorneys in New Mexico.

He served as a City Commissioner for eight years in Hobbs, and was Mayor of the community 1972-73; 1976-77; 2008-2012. He has served as Special Assistant District Attorney in Civil Matters and as Hobbs City Attorney.

Gary Don was a State Senator (District 41, Eddy and Lea Counties from 1993-1997. He also

has volunteered time to go to local Senior living facilities to speak about senior planning, preparation for the future and answers many questions seniors have.

Nedra has always been involved in community. She is a highly loved retired librarian from Hobbs Municipal Schools who touched countless lives through her dedication and care for children. Students from Broadmoor Elementary remember her as a kind person who cared about them.

Nedra cares deeply about her community, and has always been willing to get involved.

She has testified before the National Regulatory Commission in the past, and has run for School Board.

Those who know her say she is one of the most delightful and focused people they have ever known, and her smile in infectious. She graduated from HHS in 1959, and made lifelong friends who decided in 2006 to go on a retreat every September except hometown reunion years to Ruidoso where the close-knit group exchanges life stories and events in their lives with each other in a time of fellowship and fun.

Next year will be their 60th class reunion.

Gary Don enjoys cycling with friends most Saturdays and Sundays. The group rides in hot weather, cold weather, and windy weather, and whether it is a 25 mile ride or a 50 mile ride, the group has an exhilarating workout.

He rides with some regulars including Bob Reid, Donny Hill, David Soto, Craig Sweet, TJ Parks, and Ric Crosby.

FDA WARNINGS: FDA WARNING: Cipro, Cipro XR, Proquin XR, temptation to jump at anything that appears to offer a chance for a cure.”

Levaquin, Floxin, Noroxin, Avelox, Factive Fluoroquinolones have carried similar warnings for years, but officials say they continue to receive reports of safety problems. A “black box” warning is the FDA’s sternest warning. “We have seen continuing reports of tendon rupture so we are trying to increase awareness,” says Edward Cox, MD, director of the FDA’s Office of Antimicrobial Products.

The warning applies to drugs of the fluoroquinolone class, including Cipro, Cipro XR, Proquin XR, Levaquin, Floxin, Noroxin, Avelox, Factive, and marketed generics.

FDA WARNS OF CANCER CURE HOAX: Beware of products claiming to cure cancer on websites or social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. According to Nicole Kornspan, M.P.H., a consumer safety officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they’re rampant these days.

“Anyone who suffers from cancer, or knows someone who does, understands the fear and desperation that can set in,” says Kornspan. “There can be a great

As is the case with current prescription NSAID labels, the Drug Facts labels of over-the-counter (OTC) nonaspirin NSAIDs already contain information on heart attack and stroke risk. We will also request updates to the OTC non-aspirin NSAID Drug Facts labels.

FDA WARNS, Patients taking NSAIDs should seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, weakness in one part or side of their body, or slurred speech.

Arrest Warrant Scam Shows Up In Lea County

Mary (not her real name) was not at home when the “Lea County Sheriff ’s Department” called with a request for her to return the call.

When she reached them, she was informed there was a warrant for her arrest for failing to show up for jury duty. The fine would be $450 and an additional $500 for contempt of court.

Mary had never received a notice for jury duty, and was surprised and upset to learn about the warrant. Immediately, she asked what she should do to resolve the problem. The “sheriff ” instructed her to wire the money from Walmart (it had to be cash) to a woman in Raleigh, North Carolina.

He also told her not to tell anyone what she was doing, or she could be arrested for a felony.

The more she talked to the man, the more Mary wanted to get the fines paid as soon as possible. She had no time to take a breath and question the phone number (It was a 505 area code) and what she was being instructed to do; if she had, she would have realized she was the victim of a scam.

“He was so smooth,” she said.

“He gave me the docket number, dates when I needed to appear in court, his name and the name of his supervisor. When I said I was terrified, he was reassuring.”

This scam has been targeting area residents, and Lea County Magistrate Judge David Finger recently provided some warning signs in a column in the Albuquerque Journal.

First of all, law enforcement officers or court officers would NEVER call a citizen and demand immediate payment of a fine, he said. A call may be made with instructions for how to resolve the issue, but payment would never be requested over the phone.

He also said court officers would never discourage someone from going to the courthouse in person to resolve a warrant or pay a fine. In fact, that is often the preferred way to handle warrants. A court officer would never instruct a citizen to pay a fine through Western Union or Walmart, especially to an out-ofstate address.

If any of the above happens, hang up the phone and call the Lea County court or the New Mexico Warrant Hotline at 575.524.5860.

In Mary’s case, she drove to Walmart, but after the clerk and a supervisor asked some questions about the transaction, Mary became suspicious. The supervisor asked to talk to the man. Right away, he knew it was a scam and urged Mary to hang up the phone.

She notified Lea County State Bank because she was worried the man might know her bank account number. (He didn’t.) LCSB officials encourage customers to never give out their account numbers, or any personal information.

After the fact, Mary can’t believe she could be so gullible. “I’m very grateful that I didn’t lose the money,” she said.

USDA RECIPES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

HOLIDAY RECIPE ROAST TURKEY BREAST WITH ROSEMARY, SAGE, AND THYME Ingredients • 3 pounds turkey breast half (with skin and bones) • 1 onion, large quartered • 1 carrot, large quartered • 1 teaspoon dried sage • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • 1 teaspoon rosemary • 3 tablespoons olive oil • salt and pepper (to taste, optional) • chicken broth (or margarine, for basting, optional) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place turkey breast in roasting pan along with onion and carrot.

2. Mix spices with olive oil. Rub turkey with olive oil.

3. Roast turkey at 400°F for 15 minutes.

Baste with margarine and chicken broth (optional).

4. Reduce turkey temperature to 350°F and roast turkey, basting every 20 minutes with pan juices (or margarine and chicken broth), about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until meat thermometer inserted in thick part of meat registers 165°F. 5. Remove to carving board and let rest for 10 minutes.

The importance of having a joint owner on your bank account “Accounts with no joint owners or beneficiaries may be sent to the state instead of your family.”

Planning your future can make the difference between unhappy relatives and a well-provided for family.

Failing to plan, is planning to fail. What can you do?

Many of our best credit union members have had accounts for many years and many don’t remember who is on their accounts now and in case of emergency.

When was the last time you reviewed who has access to your account? Do you have a joint owner or a beneficiary or both on your account? What’s the difference?

Joint owners have full access to your account now and may make transactions at any time (with or without your consent). The primary and joint owner’s signature are required up front. They are authorized to make withdrawals from your account at any time. Joint owners are wonderful for seniors who may have limited access to the office and want a designated person to perform transactions when necessary. In most cases, the account will rollover on death to the joint owner(s).

Members can also give Power of Attorney designating a person to perform transaction on their behalf. Power of Attorney ends upon death and are not beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries only are family or friends who only get account access after the members and all joint

owners’ passing. The account owner can name multiple beneficiaries and how much each person will receive.

A death certificate is required for a beneficiary to claim the funds. A beneficiary cannot perform transactions on the account while the primary member is still alive. Beneficiaries are great for seniors who want full control of their money now and a plan who gets the money later.

Members may also choose to have both a joint owner now and a separate beneficiary if both the primary and join owners pass away. Accounts with no joint owners or beneficiaries may be sent to the state instead of your family. It is critical to determine who is on your account while you are capable to make changes. Contact your financial institution and ask to review your account. A thoughtful account owner can ensure your financial future.

Tasha Pilcher started the Santa For Seniors Project to provide gifts and necessities to senior citizens in Eunice.

Tasha is always looking for Senior Citizens that may need a little extra help this holiday season and during these upcoming cold winter months.

Tasha said, “What I do is give a form to the Eunice senior center and they pass them out to the seniors in need. They then return them to me by a specific date. I fill out the cards with the senior’s name and information and take the cards to a location where the cards hang on a tree. People return the gifts to the location where they picked up a card tag. It’s like the Angel Tree except it’s for Senior citizens.”

Tasha will be letting everyone know where those trees will be placed.

Food Ministry Feeding Hundreds Of Senior Citizens Every Month

Cissy Food Ministry is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Lea County. Their thrift store at 2510 N Dal Paso takes donations from those wanting to deliver items to the store to sell. It is located next to Craig Electric and is the main way they raise funds to feed so many senior citizens.

So as you are cleaning out your closets or getting rid of furniture, kitchen items, decorator items, bedding, clothes, or other treasures and would like to donate to this food ministry for senior citizens, it is best to call Cissy at 390-4200 to donate or volunteer.

Every Wednesday evening the ministry delivers hot meals to seniors. The group has hosted hamburger cookouts for the residents at the Cedars, and surprised residents at Buena Vista with a farmer’s market complete with fresh vegetables for them.

Is Retirement Housing a Fairy Tale?

After many years, decades even, of having “I owe, I owe, so off to work I go “ as a theme song most, if not all of us, begin to look forward to the golden season of retirement.

One of the major aspects of retirement is housing. Questions pop such as “Should I down size my home?”, “Should I relocate closer to my children and grand children?”, “Do I really enjoy yard maintenance or have the time and energy for it?”. These questions all involve your home.

Let’s take a look at things through the eyes of the Seven Dwarfs.

Dopey: This fellow has a live and let live approach to his retirement housing needs. He doesn’t have the motivation to paint, maintain or update his current home. He is going to leave his home for his children to deal with.

Grumpy: This fellow’s approach is a more reluctant approach to retirement

housing. He realizes he needs to make changes for the future but doesn’t want to let go of possessions and the family home. He is going to make the decision to sell, downsize or relocate a tough on for all concerned.

Doc: This fellow is approaching his retirement housing needs with precision, care and close attention to details. He has a formula and a plan to make the most of his housing situation to meet his retirement needs. enior Citizens across the country say they want to live close to family in their golden years, so, many seniors are selling their homes, signing in on Amazon and buying their new homes with free shipping. These tiny homes nestle nicely in any body’s backyard. To give you an idea of the price to own your tiny new home ordered online, depending on size, the range is from about $7,000.00 (medium small 237 square feet, 87 square foot loft) to $65,000.00 (quite roomy 1,300 square feet). Popular types are those you see below in a size range of 240 square feet at $17,800 to a range of 550 square feet at around $29,000.00. A 1,300 square foot home kit can be purchased for around $65,000.00. Of course, the cost to assemble the kit, the amenities such as carpet, flooring and lighting chosen would be above that cost. Some builders are even creating neighborhoods of these homes into gated communities. The new owner chooses the color for the outside of the structures and inside rooms.

The ambiance, seniors share, is that they no longer need a big home, do not need the hassle of upkeep, and it’s less expensive than going into a retirement village. They say, the average cost to live in an independent facility is $2,900/ month to $4,000.00/month, and this provides seniors with a home close to relatives, often in their backyard if zoning permits.

Our own Ron Black’s son, Shannon Black Founded a company that is changing lives with the tiny homes thus giving seniors or anyone freedom to be where they want to be. He is Chief designer and builder at Big Freedom Tiny Homes.

Shannon said, Big Freedom Tiny Homes is a labor of love. What started as a passion for building craftsmanship finally merged with the satisfaction of minimal living.

These homes are made, each one unique and by hand one at a time, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest by Shannon Black. Every detail is considered in the design and build of these artisan homes. SENIORS STANDING STRONG NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN LEA COUNTY HELPING HUNDREDS OF SENIOR CITIZENS Seniors Standing Strong has provided the following help to our seniors in Lea County.

Numerous seniors have been helped through the nonprofit paying for airconditioning repairs to their evaporative units, limbs and tree trimming removal was done, a new starter for a senior’s car was provided and installed, bathroom grab bars were purchased and installed, a concrete ramp was poured, wiring, electricity was restored, two flooded senior homes from leaks and rain were repaired, and professionally vacuumed and dried out, a serious leaking gas situation was repaired, new water heaters were purchased and installed at two addresses with water heater problems, seniors who needed eye exams and glasses were helped, an 80 year old senior sleeping on the floor who lost her home and belongings due to back taxes, now has a new bed.

Other seniors received denture replacement due to lost or broken dentures, a tree interfering with plumbing was removed, faucets were repaired, new potty risers, a transport wheel chair, oxygen monitors, a lift chair, and assistive devices were provided, sheets for hospital beds in homes, adult diapers, and other needs were fulfilled. Window air-conditioning units were funded, Countless families also have been helped with answers to questions.

The organization networked with other non profit organizations such as Cissy Food ministry, Faith In Action, United Way 211, and Isaiah’s Kitchen, and Nor-Lea for partnered assistance. Together, a huge difference is made for Lea County Seniors who otherwise would go without help in these areas of need.
