YEAR IN REVIEW: Lea County Is Growing, Booming, Building, And Flourishing

By SC Staff report Overall population of Lea County is 68,759 residents, approximately 3,600 above previous census numbers in years past. Oil and Gas Production is booming with more than 37,500 total wells on file and over $13 billlion invested in NM oil and natural g`as in recent months, and unemployment is low.

The past year in review has changed the landscape and nature of offerings in our Lea Communities sporting metropolitan type facilities with a special flare for

fun, recreation, wellness, created with futuristic trappings.

The CORE facility was a partnership with the City of Hobbs, New Mexico Junior College, Hobbs Municipal Schools, Lea County, J.F Maddox Foundation, the University of the Southwest, and the State of New Mexico. This $62.5 million project offers quality of life activities, healthy lifestyle activities, entertainment, and recreation for all ages.

Remains Of Local Woman’s Uncle Believed To Be Among Those 55 Boxes From Korea Of Fallen U.S. Soldiers Returned To The United States

J

ust months ago, the country watched as North Korea returned remains believed to be of 55 US troops killed during the Korean War, bringing renewed hope to families who have waited decades for closure. Fifty-five boxes were unloaded from a plane, each wrapped in a United Nations flag, and carefully placed in rows. This day was especially meaningful for longtime Hobbs resident, Judy Britton. Her Uncle, Lieutenant Charles Andrews, a jet fighter pilot whose plane was shot down in the conflict is believed to be among those remains of those Americans who lost their lives in Korea.

Is It Worth It To Pay For Vacation Protection Insurance When You Cruise?

Let’s take Carnival Vacation Protection Plan as an example.

Some of the areas of coverage include canceling for Health Reasons, Jury Duty, Military, and Death, however, hundreds of opinion reviews of Aon Affinity, the company that carries the cruise insurance, state that countless numbers of claims are denied despite the fact that their need to cancel is valid and under covered areas. A Hobbs resident who was booked on a cruise with a 83 year old woman from Texas who had to cancel and had purchased the vacation protection plan. The reason for cancellation was due to unexpected health issues of the Texas woman, something that was stated as being covered.

The coverage for the insurance was $49.00/person. Here’s what happened. Canceling party calls Carnival. Traveler: “We need to cancel our cruise due to an unexpected health problem, and we have trip insurance.” Carnival: “Is the health problem a preexisting condition?’ Traveler: “No, it just occurred and doesn’t look like it will be resolved by sailing date.” Carnival: “Well, it looks like you are in our penalty period on this cancellation and you will have a $300 penalty assessed on what you have paid.” Traveler: “I didn’t see any penalty period noted that there was a deadline for when you could use your insurance, I mean,

who knows they are going to have a health problem in advance?

It’s still fourteen days until the cruise sails.” Carnival, “we have penalty dates on all cruises for cancellation, and you will need to contact Aon Affinity, our vacation protection company and file a claim. We can only refund what is left on what you paid after we deduct the penalty amount.” So, the traveler called Aon and was directed to a website claim form. All was looking pretty normal, put in your booking number, passenger names, date of sailing, and stated reason for cancellation as medical. This is where that form raised some red flags. The next question went like this: What is your health problem? What was the date this problem started? What was the date you went to your doctor?

What was the date of your final treatment? The next question stated, include name of doctor, address and phone number of doctor who treated you, and state the doctor’s specialty of practice. So, the travelers gave that information. The next box states that documents must be uploaded there including a physician’s statement, diagnosis, plan of action, and then, it asks that you sign the form which also states: By signing this form you give permission for your medical records to be accessed or requested by Aon, and further, shared with other parties like airlines, hotels, etc. The note under this box declared that the claim would not be reviewed without the attached information.

The traveler’s first thought was, we are not giving anyone access to our medical records, and we sure do not want them shared because it is private, and protected everywhere else we look. So, the travelers decided to call again and express their concerns over what this company was asking for in order to honor something they had faith in when they selected to buy the insurance.

The insurance company then advised to go back and go a step further and hit submit without attached documentation, so they did. The claim was denied, and the agent said it was, “because the travelers did not turn over medical records.” The travelers lost their money on the cruise itself and other payments that were pre-paid. Many are saying,, “is it worth it to even have it?”Ask questions before you pay for anything that does not provide adequate details before you pay for an optional add on.

Special Service For Veterans Needs Volunteers The Southeast New Mexico Veteran’s Transportation Network, a nonprofit Organization takes veterans to their doctor’s and medical procedure appointments. The network provides transportation to and from Roswell, Carlsbad, Hobbs, Artesia, Lubbock and Midland-Odessa as well as El Paso and other surrounding areas. The nonprofit does not charge veterans for this service which operates on contributions and donations. The transport van and gas are already provided for, but the organization is in need of volunteers to drive veterans to their appointments. Many Senior Citizens In Lea County Using Legal Cannibus (CBD) HEMP Products For Pain Relief

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients two years of age and older.

This is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana. It is also the first FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of patients with Dravet syndrome.

CBD is a chemical component of the Cannabis sativa plant, more commonly known as marijuana. However, CBD does not cause intoxication or euphoria (the “high”) that comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and CBD products are legal.

Cover Story JE and Virginia Teague

JE’s Grandparents homesteaded and farmed the land around where he and Virginia live today. The Teague Cemetery can be seen along the road heading North on Grimes, a special place where generations of family are buried. Virginia has made her mark on the area for many years. She was a familiar face at the bank, CEO of Estacado Federal Credit Union and now is with Oxy. They have been married for 22 years, and

enjoy their life in the country where 100 acres sprawl along the road, beautiful horses, butterflies, and wide open areas define their lives.

Back in 2005, a sight to see was JE and Virginia’s buffalo roaming their property. The buffalo were used to train his horses for competition. It is said that the buffalo taught the horse to read a cow’s movements and control it. This practice played a large role in JE’s many cutting-horse competitions in three states over the years. His involvement with horses started more than 80 years ago as a small tyke. The couple no longer have the buffalo, but long-timers in the area sure enjoyed the rare sight of between nine and twelve buffalo to see hanging out in Lea County.

Today JE is 81 and is still an avid roper. He competes and is respected by his peer ropers.

This year alone, he has participated in 14 roping competitions and even his busted ribs this year from when

a horse fell over backward hasn’t slowed this roper and Army Veteran down. He was winning big after he served his time in the military and joined the PRCA. He has ridden with Ultimate Calf Roping Association and is roper #13, was Reserve Champion last year and has been roping since 1961. He serves on the Western Heritage Museum Board, on NMJC Booster Club Board as well.

JE works for Get A Grip Supply Company, so to say the least, between both of their jobs, attending and participating in roping events, and taking care of their place and stock, their days are packed with plenty to do.

Granny’s Old Fashioned Remedies

FDA WARNINGS: Safety Announcement Amblify Can Cause Compulsive Behavior; Gambling, Sex, Eating, Shopping The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that compulsive or uncontrollable urges to gamble, binge eat, shop, and have sex have been reported with the use of the antipsychotic drug aripiprazole (Abilify, Abilify Maintena, Aristada, and generics). These uncontrollable urges were reported to have stopped when the medicine was discontinued or the dose was reduced. These impulsecontrol problems are rare, but they may result in harm to the patient and others if not recognized.

Although pathological gambling is listed as a reported side effect in the

current aripiprazole drug labels, this description does not entirely reflect the nature of the impulse-control risk that we identified. In addition, we have become aware of other compulsive behaviors associated with aripiprazole, such as compulsive eating, shopping, and sexual actions. These compulsive behaviors can affect anyone who is taking the medicine. As a result, we are adding new warnings about all of these compulsive behaviors to the drug labels and the patient Medication Guides for all aripiprazole products.

Patients and caregivers should be alert for uncontrollable and excessive urges and behaviors while taking aripiprazole.

It is important to talk with a health care professional as soon as possible if you or a family member experiences any of these uncontrollable urges, in order to prevent or limit possible harm. Patients should not suddenly stop taking their aripiprazole medicine without first talking to their health care professional.

Health care professionals should make patients and caregivers aware of the risk of these uncontrollable urges when prescribing aripiprazole,

and specifically ask patients about any new or increasing urges while they are being treated with aripiprazole.

Closely monitor for new or worsening uncontrollable urges in patients at higher risk for impulse-control problems.

These include those with a personal or family history of obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse-control disorder, bipolar disorder, impulsive personality, alcoholism, drug abuse, or other addictive behaviors. Consider reducing the dose or stopping the medicine if such urges develop. Aripiprazole is used to treat certain mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Tourette’s disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. It may also be used in combination with antidepressants to treat depression.

Aripiprazole can decrease hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms such as disorganized thinking. It can stabilize mood, improve depression, and decrease the tics of Tourette’s disorder.

Aripiprazole is available under the brand names Abilify, Abilify Maintena, Aristada, and also as generics.

Individuals, family members, the custodian of a senior can be held liable if they are reported to the State of New Mexico as a suspected abuser. Persons such as nurses, caregivers, and medical providers who inflict harm, neglect, or exploit elderly patients also may be charged with elder abuse.

The Adult Protective Services Act in Section 277-30 of the New Mexico Statutes (NMSA) requires any person or financial institution to report cases of suspected elderly abuse, neglect, or exploitation to the Adult Protective Services Department. Failure to comply with this mandatory duty to report may be a basis for action against the mandated reporters, even if these individuals did not inflict harm or abuse on the elderly victims.Signs of Elder Abuse Certain types of abuse manifest in various ways. Hobbs Man Owns 40 Cars Some are rare cars of a specific type in existence

J

im Collins and his wife Dortha have always had a passion for old cars, classic cars, vintage cars, whatever you might want call vehicles from the past, and those that might even be known as one of a kind or be known as rare.

They have been around Hobbs for at least 50 years.

The couple has owned Jaco Bit company for more than four decades.

Jim Collins is well known in car circles for his unique and eclectic collection. There are only five known airplane car prototypes in existence, and he has two of them. The other three are owned by one man in Colorado. Jim doesn’t just settle for any old car, he collects rare, unusual, and classic designs.

His involvement and fascination with cars came at a young age in a time when no one had much money and if something went wrong with a car needing repairs, it was fix it yourself or walk. He worked on a variety of cars and developed a strong desire to be around cars, car folks, car shows, car clubs, car tours, and the thrill of making an old classic look like it just rolled off of the showroom floor.

He and Dortha have attended hundreds of car shows and tours over the years across the U.S., and have been involved in the coordination of many of those tours and shows.

With a heart as big as Dallas, Jim orchestrates the excitement of gathering other car buffs to make trips to nursing homes and area facilities, to drive in parades, carry dignitaries, and share the ambiance of the past with so many. The joy spread by this type of involvement is beyond comprehension as the young and old alike can see and experience a taste of the past that has been preserved. Everyone has a story from the past once the cars show up, and the memories brought back are funny, happy, and reminiscent of another time.

Recently, the Collins family hosted a special surprise 74th birthday party for Dortha at Zia Park Ballroom. More than 120 people attended, enjoyed delicious food, live music and dancing.

Claustrophobic Patients Finding Some Peace With Open MRI Scans Lubbock based company operates in Hobbs, Lubbock, and Houston

T

here are a lot of folks who say they are terrified to have a MRI. Some are claustrophobic and the idea of putting their body in a long tube with little space around creates panic. The open MRI has open areas on the sides, front and back and the only close space is above the head. There is thumping noise and what sounds like the motor of an airplane at intervals so ear protectors are provided if needed. The football like helmet in the picture affixes around the head for steady stillness while the machine is producing viewing results of the scan.

Others say they are fearful to be unable to move. This concept offers an option for those with fear and inability to be in a tightly enclosed situation. Thia concept also is often used for overweight individuals since the room inside a traditional unit sometimes will not accommodate obese body types.

The unit offers panoramic full body scanning or targeted area scanning. For head scans, a lightweight helmetlike apparatus much like a flat backed football helmet attaches around the head to help hold the head still.

Her level of expertise provides patients with a calm sense of care. While in the apparatus, she can direct and encourage the patient with two way communication, so being in the scanner isn’t quite like being alone as she monitors and carefully

listens when you ask after a while in the unit, “how much longer?” The relief one feels when she says, “only two more scans, one will take five minutes and the final will take three minutes” is nice to hear with the anticipation that it’s almost finished after being totally still for 30-45 minutes.

Sedation can be requested but the process can be accomplished with or without sedation per patient request and anticipated needs, so relax and know that there are options for MRI needs in the community.

SENIORS STANDING STRONG NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN LEA COUNTY HELPING HUNDREDS OF SENIOR CITIZENS Seniors Standing Strong has provided the following help to our seniors in Lea County.

Numerous seniors have been helped through the nonprofit paying for airconditioning repairs to their evaporative units, limbs and tree trimming removal was done, a new starter for a senior’s car was provided and installed, bathroom grab bars were purchased and installed, a concrete ramp was poured, wiring, electricity was restored, two flooded senior homes from leaks and rain were repaired, and professionally vacuumed and dried out, a serious leaking gas situation was repaired, new water heaters were purchased and installed at two addresses with water heater problems, seniors who needed eye exams and glasses were helped, an 80 year old senior sleeping on the floor who lost her home and belongings due to back taxes, now has a new bed.

Other seniors received denture replacement due to lost or broken dentures, a tree interfering with plumbing was removed, faucets were repaired, new potty risers, a transport wheel chair, oxygen monitors, a lift chair, and assistive devices were provided, sheets for hospital beds in homes, adult diapers, and other needs were fulfilled. Window air-conditioning units were funded, Countless families also have been helped with answers to questions.

The organization networked with other non profit organizations such as Cissy Food ministry, Faith In Action, United Way 211, and Isaiah’s Kitchen, and Nor-Lea for partnered assistance. Together, a huge difference is made for Lea County Seniors who otherwise would go without help in these areas of need.
