History of Schulenburg

S

Learn why Schulenburg is known as “halfway to everywhere.”

Schulenburg, Texas is called a “railroad town”, “halfway to everywhere”, the “musician town”, “home of the painted churches”, “gateway to the rolling hills” and many others. It was founded when the Galveston, Houston and San Antonio Railway reached here in 1873. At that time the many people in the communities of Lyons and High Hill moved to the new railroad town of Schulenburg. Schulenburg was named after Louis Schulenburg, who donated the land for the city. The community was granted a post office in 1874 and incorporated in 1875. Before the town of Schulenburg was born English, German, Czech and other European citizens settled this area bringing with them their religion beliefs, tools and way of life. Another land donor, John Christian Baumgarten Sr., was one of the original “Forty-eighters” from Germany. Baumgraten built a cottonseed-crushing plant in the community and also operated a lumberyard, planing mill, sash and door factory, and cotton gin. In 1883, he opened the Schulenburg Oil Mill, which manufactured Baumgarten Process Allison Flour from cottonseed. In 1884, the community had 1,000 inhabitants, two churches, a bank, schools, thirteen general stores, and four saloons. Schulenburg had electric lights by 1896, and in 1900 the community had 1,149 inhabitants. By 1914, it had Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, and Methodist churches and the G. E. Ruhman plant, which manufactured steel furnaces and wire goods. The population of the town rose to 1,246 in 1920, 1,640 in 1930, and 1,970 in 1940. In 1945 Schulenburg had 112 businesses, including two manufacturing companies, three cotton gins, a machine shop, and the Stanzel Company—a model airplane factory. Today you can learn more about the Stanzel Conpany at the Stanzel Museum in Schulenburg. The population of the town continued to increase in the postwar period, reaching 2,207 in 1960, 2,347 in 1980, and 2,455 in 1990. The population was 2,699 in 2000 and 2,945 in 2015. Schulenburg has a rich musical heritage, especially polka music, and has had several orchestras. You can learn more at the Texas Polka Music Museum. See page seven for more information.

SCHULENBURG HISTORICAL MUSEUM - Historic artifacts of the development of Schulenburg are on display. The Schulenburg Historical Museum was established by John and Karen Wolters. John is the great-grandson of Robert A. Wolters who started a mercantile business in Schulenburg and became one of its more prominent citizens. The building housing the current museum exhibits was the old Wolters Mercantile built in the early 1900s. The museum has been housed in this building since 1988 at the largesse of the Wolters family, but in December 2014 the Wolters estate gift-deeded the current building, and the building next door, to the museum. 631 N. Small Town Charm Rochelle and Jess Hewitt welcome guests to historic Das Meyer Haus D Das Meyer Haus owners Rochelle and Jess Hewitt didn’t have to think twice when they first saw their would-be bed and breakfast two years ago. The house had already undergone a major remodel in 2004 allowing the Hewitts to focus on adding their own personal touches. “The condition was very good,” said Rochelle. “The previous owner, who worked in construction management, was actually part of the Meyer family who built the house in 1905. She had already added a lot of beautiful architectural elements and nice enhancements.” And it was those unique architectural features, combined with a stellar location, that sealed the deal for the Hewitts. “When we were first shown the property, we fell in love with the beautiful architectural features inside the home,” shared Rochelle. “We are real estate investors, so part of our thinking was that we would like to have a home that we could use ourselves and also turn into a lodging business when we were not using

10

it. It ticked off a lot of boxes for us; small Texas town, charm, character. Plus Fayette County has so much going on. It has provided us with a lovely getaway home when it is not being rented out.” That combination of features that first attracted the Hewitts to the house is what creates a distinctive experience at Das Meyer Haus today. It’s what sets them apart from the crowd when it comes to choosing an escape from city life or a weekend getaway. “Our bed and breakfast has been described as having everything you could possibly want or need, all done in a setting of lovely artwork,” added Rochelle. “We went with a luxe, Victorian style inside the home. The furnishings and beds are very comfortable and the location is very convenient to restaurants and shops in the area.” Das Meyer Haus is located at 527 Anderson Street in downtown Schulenburg and online at dasmeyerhaus.com.

Chasing a Crazy Dream N

Craig and April Pierson offer the whole package at The Guest House at Twin Oaks Ranch Not a lot of people can stake a claim to land that has remained in their family for a century and a half, but April Pierson can. The Guest House at Twin Oaks Ranch sits on property that has been loved by her family since 1871. “We purchased a 100-year-old Czech farmhouse near Shiner, Texas and had it moved here quite a while ago,” said April. “After the initial renovation, the house sat vacant for a couple of years and needed some updating. Our idea was to use the guest house for friends and family, but I thought, when we were not using it, why not make some cash? My husband thought I was crazy. ‘Who will want to come stay out here?’ he said. The idea just kind of evolved. Visitors slowly began renting the guest house, but in May of this year, it started booking up. Families are wanting to get away from the city and spend some time in the country, away from everyone. They come and relax on our wrap-around porch, feed treats to our horses and donkey, and play with our dogs. The kids love to fish in the pond and take the canoe out to the island. We have 220 acres to roam and everyone loves the ranch as much as we do. It’s been a real treat to share it and we’ve been busier than I could have ever anticipated.” Although it’s been busy at the popular bed and breakfast, that doesn’t stop April from making sure it isn’t all work and no play. “It’s just fun,” laughed April. “It’s been really amazing all the people we have met from different places. It’s fun sharing it with others and watching the kids enjoy it. We have gotten some of the cutest notes from visiting children. The Guest

House at Twin Oaks Ranch isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an experience. We want guests to feel like they’re coming into a cozy home. We have kolaches for them, the fridge is stocked, and all the makings for breakfast are provided. We want it to be easy for guests to come in and not have to worry about bringing everything, like spices or toiletries. We have games and a fire pit and the stargazing is simply amazing.” Offering a stress-free getaway is what the Piersons strive for and they’ve created partnerships to ensure that every guest’s experience is an extraordinary one. “We have partnered with Callisto Culinary, as well as Majek Vineyard and Winery added April. “Chef Michael and Emily Castillo are well known chefs and have their catering kitchen at the Twin Oaks Ranch Event Center and can cook for guests that stay here. It’s an added benefit that guests can book in advance. Majek Vineyard and Winery is only six miles away and we partner with them on multiple music and wine events throughout the year and offer discounts to their wine club members who would like to stay with us. We also host weddings, meetings and parties at our event center. For weddings, the guest house is where the bride and her bridesmaids get ready, and also where the bride and groom stay their first night as husband and wife. It has all evolved into something much bigger than we could have ever expected or imagined. Guess it wasn’t such a crazy idea, after all.” The Guest House at Twin Oaks Ranch is located at 8289 US Hwy 77 North in Hallettsville and online at twinoaksranchtexas.com.

The Flower Box still going strong after over 40 years with Wick at the helm Delores Wick, owner of The Flower Box, had no idea that her simple desire to find respite from long days at home would lead to a lifelong, family venture in downtown Schulenburg. “After we moved here from Houston, all of my children went to school,” shared Wick. “I’m a busy person and I didn’t want to just stay at home. I heard The Flower Box needed help so I walked in, introduced myself, and said I wanted the job. The owner asked for my phone number and I laughed because we didn’t even have a phone yet. She said to come back in two or three days. I did and I was hired.” Although she had no experience in the flower industry, and no formal training, Wick quickly proved to be a natural. “My boss gave me some ribbon and showed me how to make a bow,” said Wick. “She said she was going to lunch and would see how I did when she got back. By the time she returned, I had all of these bows made. ‘Don’t tell me you didn’t work in a flower shop before,’ she said. I honestly hadn’t. It was an easy thing for me to do and I loved it.” It would only be a year or so before her boss would express interest in selling The Flower Box and Wick quickly stated that she wanted to buy it, determined to make it work. Wick had her family’s support over the years although, at first, she needed to prove that she could be the success she is today. “I told my husband that I had a job,” said Wick. “He thought I wouldn’t last two weeks. Turns out, after he retired from his job in Houston, he came and helped me. He was my delivery person.”

26

The community supported her and soon she outgrew the location she was in. “Some people came to help me,” added Wick. “I needed a bigger spot. We moved from Lyons to North Main Street. Later the store next door was available and I bought that, too, so we could expand even further.” Now, even at 80 years old, Wick is still just as motived by serving her customers as she was over 40 years ago when she first bought The Flower Box. “I just like it,” shared Wick. “That’s why I come to work every day. I love doing funerals, making their last couple of days with their loved one beautiful. And I also love weddings. I may not be as fast as I was before, but I still love to do it.” Today Wick is joined by her three daughters, Jackie, Debbie and Shelly, who work in The Flower Box alongside her. In addition to flowers, the store also carries plants, upscale gifts and fine china.

Schulenburg’s Tillie’s Café to expand footprint, open for dinner guests Although already known far and wide for their specialty coffees, fresh pastries and homemade lunch specials, patrons of local favorite Tillie’s Café will be delighted to learn of a few additions coming their way. Owners Michael and Holly Czimskey couldn’t be more excited about their expansion allowing them to open their doors to dinner guests as of mid-December 2020. “We knew we were outgrowing our building,” said Holly. “We wanted to do this for a very long time. We’ll be offering Sunday brunch, shared plates, lighter options, rotating specials, wine and slushies, specialty cocktails and fun things to entertain yourself with. We’ll still have coffee all the way into the evening but now you can spike it and make it an adult drink, if you’d like.” Although changes are brewing at Tillie’s, fans of the local hotspot need not worry about losing what made them fall in love with the quaint café in the first place. “As far as our morning and lunch service, it’ll remain very similar to the way it is now,” added Holly. “Obviously we’ll have a bigger space but we’re keeping it light and fun. At around four to five o’clock, we are going to shift into a more refined service. We have high-quality chefs working our menu and a large commercial kitchen outfitted in the back allowing us to offer more choices. We want our guests to have more opportunities to spend time with family and friends or take someone on a date. We’ll also be rolling out a monthly Community Table event featuring world class chefs from Austin, Houston, Victoria and surrounding cities that will come for the night and give us an enlivened dining experience.”

28

It’s easy to feel Holly’s excitement about the transition going on at Tillie’s but that passion isn’t new. Her love of food, and her hometown of Schulenburg, have deep roots.

I grew up in the kitchen of my granny’s business, Olga’s Café in Schulenburg.”

“I grew up in the kitchen of my granny’s business, Olga’s Café in Schulenburg,” shared Holly. “I loved the food, the people, everything about it. When I moved home, I just had this hope and a dream. Luckily, I also have a very supportive husband that wanted to start a family business with me. We started talking to the lady that owned the coffee shop previously and discovered she was ready to sell. It all happened very naturally. We knew we didn’t just want a coffee shop, so we overhauled the brand and it has grown exponentially ever since.” And that growth didn’t just spring up from good luck. The Czimskeys are quick to credit the staff at Tillie’s Café as the crucial key to their success. “We genuinely care,” said Holly. “We care about our product and service in a way that is fun and playful. Everything is meant to be a little quirky, different and fun and that carries through to the entire experience. Life is hard enough … we want our customers to have a good time. Our job is to create an atmosphere that you want to come back to.” Tillie’s Café is located at 621 North Main in downtown Schulenburg.

Stay Awhile! Relocation information for Schulenburg

Schulenburg, Texas is a friendly, vibrant community and the perfect stopping point during that trip from Houston to San Antonio on I-10 or when you travel State Highway 77, the shortest route north or to the Texas Valley. Thanks to a railroad depot that was built in 1873, Schulenburg was quickly put on the map. Since then, the population has more than doubled and the town is now surrounded by the many open fields within Fayette County where you can easily spot cattle and wildflowers. Being the home of the Shorthorns, Schulenburg has a public school system, a Catholic elementary school and a Blinn College campus. Education is a top priority in this community, especially since Schulenburg means “school town” in German.
