The story of Houston Empire Gold Buyers began long before the Houston name appeared on the door. The Evans family's roots in precious metals reach back to the 1960s in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, where the family worked in gold and silver refining. Anthony Evans learned the trade through a family tradition that included his grandfather, Nick Evans, and his father, Mike Evans. Their world was precious-metal purity, weight, karat and refining - understanding what gold and silver truly contained and what they were worth.
WHEN TWO FAMILY TRADITIONS CAME TOGETHER
In 1999, Anthony married Shannon Nicholas. Through Shannon, another branch of knowledge entered Anthony's life. Shannon's father, Sonny Nicholas, introduced him to diamonds, fine jewelry and luxury watches. Sonny had a special eye for authentication, including the details that help separate an authentic Rolex from a counterfeit. The Evans family had taught Anthony to understand the metal inside a piece. Sonny Nicholas taught him to look at the entire piece - the diamonds, craftsmanship, watch movement, manufacturer and value beyond melt. Those two traditions eventually became part of the foundation of Houston Empire Gold Buyers. 4

Sonny Nicholas passed his knowledge to his granddaughter Madeleine Evans, sharing the jewelry, diamond and watch expertise that had once opened a new world for Anthony. Although Mike and Sonny are no longer here, the lessons they gave their grandchildren remain part of the family's work today.

Anthony is the father of four sons and two daughters. Today, three of his sons - Cory, Alex and John Ross - and his daughter Madeleine are involved in their father's business. Cory and Alex carry lessons received from their grandfather Mike. Madeleine carries lessons received from her grandfather Sonny. John Ross is growing into the business alongside his father and family. For Anthony and Shannon, four generations is more than a timeline. It is a living chain of knowledge - grandparents teaching grandchildren, parents teaching children, and each generation adding its own experience to the family name.

They split them open, fill them with ice cream (i got two scoops of Gansito and 1 scoop of Graham Cracker ice creams) then top it with chocolate shell and whipped cream. I also have them throw some Fruity Pebbles on it just cuz.

A charming little pink house sits on the side of Gessner and serves delishes snacks like some kinda dessert speakeasy. House of Mango is an adorable little walk-up snack shop serving super-ripe mangoes covered in Chamoy as well shaved ices, banana splits, ice cream and a bevy of other treats. This is the kinda place you gotta know about if you wanna call yourself a local. It’s cash only cuz they keep it old school.

Because they are geniuses, It's Good Ice Cream opened up right next to Buffalo Creek Elementary School. Y'all- they make these Dubai-style Mini-Pancakes and Crepes that are just redunkulously good. Just writing about them makes me wanna go eat some more. Pistachio, chocolate, fresh strawberry, whipped cream. Mmmm. They are currently rebranding to La Catrina but the Googles still list them as It’s Good. And it is. Damn good.

The years I spent as a bicycle tour guide in Europe were shrouded in a singular paradox: I have a terrible sense of direction. Awful. Fortunately, the company I worked for was set-up so that I was not actually a “guide” as such, but more of a “coordinator.” That distinction, although subtle, was significant as my job was to follow the group in order to insure that everyone arrived at the next hotel. The concept was fairly simple—if a client had some sort of problem (e.g., a mechanical issue with the bike), I would eventually come along and get them rolling again. Since that rarely happened, I spent most of my time riding alone, which was perfectly fine with me. I had no problem being lost myself (since I usually am), but if I caught up with any clients they would assume that I knew how to get where we were going and they would simply start following me. And before the days of GPS I found out fairly early on that they would tend to get testy if I caused them to miss a turn and end up on an autoroute or climb an unnecessary Alp. So I structured my day to minimize any client interaction along the route. Most of them would ride off by 10 a.m. or so, I would hang out in town, have lunch, and then hit the road around 2 p.m. A perfect day would be to catch the last of the group just as they were pulling up to the hotel—similar to sprinters in the Tour de France who like catching the breakaway right before the finish line. Most days, my plan worked brilliantly. Except when it didn’t. One such time was in Champagne, riding along the Marne River from Château-Thierry to Épernay…. As a guide, er coördinator, I had the opportunity to visit many European wine regions, but my favorite was Champagne; it is a beautiful region, rich in history, and produces what I consider the best wines in the world. The main source of my fondness of the region, however, is easily the people. Simply put, in all my travels I doubt I have met a populace more welcoming and friendly than the Champenois. One year, as I rode through the Marne Valley of Champagne, a mere six kilometers from our hotel, I came up on the entire group, all eight of them. They were lazily pedaling along, past house after house, all of them offering “Dégustation” ("Wine Tasting”). While these growers sell most of their grapes to the large brands, they often keep a bit for their own champagne which they produce at the local cooperative. After getting over the disappointment of catching the group (and immediately worried that I would somehow get lost in the remaining 6k), I asked them if they had stopped for any tastings. To my astonishment, they had not. I pulled into the very next driveway to rectify their gross oversight.

I rang the bell and soon, an elderly woman likely in her eighties, appeared from the rear of the house. I motioned to my crew and asked if we could possibly have a dégustation. Without hesitation, she gleefully said “of course” and motioned for us to follow her to the rear entrance to the house, as she explained that her son, the winemaker, was out, but since she had taught him everything he knew, she could fill in just fine. She also mentioned that she did not speak English, to which I replied that I would be happy to translate—it was part of the job. Despite their small production, they still produced four different champagnes. I translated as she shared the story of the family, the composition of the wines, and even some history of the region (both World Wars ravaged the region). As I consumed more champagne, I translated less (she was pouring full glasses of each wine). This caused the clients to become disinterested, and they gradually left in groups of two until I was there alone with her. She had just poured the fourth glass—their top wine— and after drinking the entire flute (I did not want to be disrespectful), I mentioned that I needed to go. I was the guide after all. “You can’t go." “Um. Well, I will gladly pay for the tasting, but I am afraid I can’t buy any wine—I am on a bike after all." At this she seemed a bit offended, and once again uttered: “You can’t go." Instantly, I became worried that I had stumbled into the home of Champagne’s version of Mrs. Robinson. A much, much older Mrs. Robinson. I scanned the room, wondering if I could bolt for the door without slipping on my cycling shoes and killing myself. Panicked, I once again indicated that I was the guide and I really should get going. “You can’t go…. I just opened our prestige cuvée and it will not be any good Monday. We have to finish the bottle." Thirty(?) minutes later, after leafing through a couple of family albums and two more flutes of some very tasty champagne, I stumbled out of the door, gingerly mounted my bike, and tried to ride in a straight line. The Health Museum will unveil Call Me Mother, an immersive, multi-site experience and call to action confronting the persistent disparities in Black maternal health in the United States. Debuting October 4, 2026, the exhibition brings a deeply personal story to a community where Harris County has the highest pregnancy-related death rate for Black women in the United States, with Black women dying at roughly four times the rate of white women locally. Curated by Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, Houston’s first Black poet laureate, Call Me Mother was inspired by a poem Mouton wrote while experiencing a miscarriage at the end of her first trimester, transforming a profoundly personal moment of loss into a powerful exploration of motherhood, health and the Black maternal experience. Texas leaders reco academic growth in
State recognition comes as SBISD ranks in districts and remains the only Texas distri Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) received statewide recognition in Austin Friday for its sustained academic growth and success strengthening student performance in reading and math. During the Sept. 4 Texas State Board of Education meeting, SBISD was honored with a resolution from State Sen. Paul Bettencourt and a proclamation from State Board of Education Chair Aaron Kinsey, District 15, and Secretary Will Hickman, District 6. The recognitions highlighted the district’s success strengthening student achievement in reading and math, with the resolution extending recognition to SBISD students, faculty, administrators and staff for their contributions to the district’s continued academic progress. The honors cap a significant week for SBISD. The district recently announced it reached the 96th percentile in Relative Performance among comparable Texas school districts, its highest ranking since the Texas Education Agency began tracking the measure. SBISD has climbed from the 54th percentile in 2015 to the 96th percentile today. SBISD is the only school district in Texas named a “District on the Rise” by the Education Scorecard, a national research initiative from Harvard University. Just 108 of more than 14,300 districts nationwide earned the distinction for continued gains in both reading and math at a more accelerated rate than their peers.
