Putting CONFIDENCE

Within Everybody’s Reach

Your transformation starts here-Melissa is ready for your complementary consultation.

That’s

“Service to our neighbors at the highest quality and the best price possible with the promiseof money back satisfaction.”

It happens to so many of us: When we’re younger, we are active, fitnessfocused, and in peak condition. Over time, our fitness goals take a back seat to establishing a successful career, building a family, and pursuing our place in the community. But the love of vitality is always with us, and one day we wake up and decide we want our bodies back again – feeling good, looking toned, and fresh with the aura of youth—and we go for it. That’s what happened to Melissa Cruz, founder of Elite Body Sculpture.

Putting Confidence Within Everybody’s Reach

According to Melissa, “I have always been physically fit and active. I love playing softball and volleyball. I was a Crossfitter for years and then I began training for my first figure (bodybuilding) competition.“

In 2014, Melissa met Aaron Farmer, while playing co-ed softball. They both love sports, traveling, animals, and kids, and after a special trip to Las Vegas in 2015, they started a family. They established a home base in Barker Branch, where they are raising two boys, Benjamin and Samuel, and four

dogs. Melissa, Aaron, and the kids are all active in sports and love traveling, board games, and cooking during the holidays.

Starting Up and Giving Back

Melissa was enjoying a good life with people she loved, but something was missing. In the summer of 2023, she realized it was time to get back into shape. As she tells it, “After having two kids, I know it’s kind of hard, so I tried some sessions myself, like fat loss with Body Sculpting and Red Light Therapy. I saw that they were

working, and I felt like I could not only get back in shape myself, but help some other ladies in my age group.”

Melissa already had an impressive healthcare background, with 20 years in the industry, as well as a degree

in psychology, so she was confident she could not only motivate other busy women, but help them actually achieve their health and wellness goals. In addition, she underwent training and got certification in the non-invasive treatments she, herself, had experienced.

She opened her health and wellness practice, Elite Physique Body

Sculpting in November of 2023, providing her special blend of health and wellness services. She made the decision to locate her offices near the Energy Corridor, off of I-10 and Park 10, with the intention of attracting

clients from the Spring Branch and Memorial Area. As she explains, “One client told me, ‘I would rather come out here because of privacy reasons. It’s a wee bit outside of my normal realm but still an easy commute.’”

What to Expect

According to Melissa, “We really focus on using more non-invasive treatments to help with clients’ fat loss journeys, like Body Contouring, Red Light Therapy, and EMS Treatments. Most clients come here because they don’t want to go under the knife, and they don’t want to put any chemicals into their body. Ours is just a more holistic approach.”

On their first visit, clients fill out paperwork, discuss their goals, and the overall plan, including costs. Melissa points out that FSA and HSA are accepted for most services. Then, clients explore what their transformation will look like. Typically, photos are taken of the area to be treated. Then, clients undergo a threetreatment process, consisting of Laser Lipo, Ultrasound Cavitation ,and Radio Frequency Therapy. “I have found that most of my clients

get the most benefit from combining these three treatments together,” Melissa explains. “After that, we take after photos,” Melissa continues, “and we compare them to the original photos. That helps me come up with the best treatment plan, because I can see how their body has responded by viewing the before and after photos.”

How long before their clients

see results?

“Most clients see some kind of toning, tightening, slimming, and smoothing after their first session,” Melissa reports. “However, everybody responds differently, so it can take anywhere from six to eight sessions to really see the body change.”

After the treatment plan, every client is put on a personalized maintenance plan, depending on their lifestyle, activity level, and the type of work they do. Melissa also provides personalized nutrition and wellness plans to support her clients, with their doctor’s permission.

Becoming More Confident

Thanks to her practice, Melissa has been able to stay true to her

values of empowering each client and improving their health and self-image. ”I take my time with each client who comes in the door, giving them the time to be heard. For me, it’s about building a lasting relationship with each person so I can better serve their needs.”

Melissa believes that every person, male or female, has something unique to bring to the table, and she’s here to unlock that potential and help them shine. That’s why she’s an unwavering advocate in helping her hardworking clients look good and feel good.

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

At Spring Branch Community Health Center (SBCHC), we recognize Men’s Health Awareness Month this June, a time to spotlight the unique health challenges men face and the importance of preventive care. This national observance encourages men and boys to take an active role in their health through regular checkups, lifestyle changes, and awareness of risk factors. Men are at increased risk for serious conditions such as heart disease, prostate and colon cancer, lung disease, diabetes, and HIV. Despite these risks, studies show that men are less likely than women to seek routine medical care or have health insurance coverage. Raising awareness can help close this gap and promote early detection, better outcomes, and healthier communities.

Common men’s health risks include: Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Mental Health, Substance Use.

Breaking the stigma around men’s health creates space for open conversations, encourages regular checkups, and supportshealthy behaviors. Practical steps to boost men’s health include:

• Preventative Care: Schedule annual physicals and health screenings.

• Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol: Reducing these habits lowers disease risk.

• Eat Well: Focus on a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

• Stay Active: Exercise regularly to support heart health and reduce stress.

• Manage Stress: Prioritize rest, relaxation, and mental health support when needed.

At SBCHC, we are committed to supporting men in leading healthier, longer lives. Prioritizing well-being is a powerful step—reach out today to schedule your checkup or speak with a provider. Call us at (713) 462-6565 to take charge of your health.

The Americans with Disabilities Act 35th Anniversary

On July 26, 2025, Houston will celebrate by hosting a disability led and advocate produced event to acknowledge this very important piece of legislation passed in 1990. Since it’s inception, the ADA has protected individuals with disabilities from discrimination in areas of public life, service provision, and public accommodation.

The Houston Disability Celebration is an annual event hosted by the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, in partnership with Houston METRO, and the Southwest ADA Center in Houston, TX.

On July 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Metropolitan Multiservice Center, located on 1475 West Gray Street, Houstonians will celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of the disability community. This event will feature vendors that serve the community, performances for and by people with disabilities, and a very special presentation by local elected officials. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that at least 8.3% of the U.S. population between the ages of 18 to 34 have a disability, and roughly 12.6% of individuals between ages 35 to 64 have a disability in the U.S.

In a recent report, the Office of the Governor estimated a significant 760,000 Texans living with disabilities in the Houston Metro Area and surrounding counties. While the Houston Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities has concluded that from the 2.2 million Houstonians, roughly 215,450 are living with disabilities. This is about 9.4 % of the Houston population. For this reason and many more, we invite you to celebrate this historic landmark civil rights law, because it protects people with disabilities, and it affirms the dignity of every person with or without a disability. As a result of the ADA, disabled people now have equal access to employment, education, transportation, and all other opportunities. At the 2025 Houston Disability Celebration we plan to emphasize the importance of the ADA, highlight its growing momentum, and celebrate the talents and skills of people with disabilities. Director Angel Ponce, “Equal access to facilities, programs, and services are guaranteed by the ADA, but there is so much more work to be done. Join me on July 26, 2025, so that together we can continue to improve the lives of people living with disabilities in our great city.”

New Hike-and-Bike Trails Opens in Spring Branch for Recreational Use

Segment completes link between Gessner Road and Shadowdale Drive

By Spring Branch Management District and Houston Parks Board

Spring Branch Management District (SBMD) and Houston Parks Board (HPB) are pleased to announce the opening of a new 0.8-mile hike-and-bike trail in Spring Branch, creating a key link between Gessner Road and Shadowdale Drive. On Saturday, May 17, the trail officially opened for use, which was marked by a ribbon cutting and community celebration with nearly 150 attendees featuring an inaugural bike ride and walk.

This new segment is part of the planned Spring Branch Trail, an 11-mile network that, once complete, will connect Addicks Reservoir to White Oak Bayou Greenway. The trail was constructed within a CenterPoint Energy utility easement and is the second phase of the broader effort to expand access to safe, off-street pathways in the Spring Branch area.

Designed to serve both recreational users and active commuters, the trail enhances mobility and connectivity in the diverse and growing neighborhood of Spring Branch. Residents can now enjoy safe and convenient access to nearby parks, schools, and retail destinations.

Key features of the project include:

• A 0.8-mile-long, 10-foot-wide concrete trail along the east-west utility easement

• Neighborhood access points at Gessner Road, Triway Lane, and the south side of Shadowdale Drive

• A direct connection to the existing Emnora Trail, which extends from Gessner Road to Northbrook High School

• Enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety at the Gessner Road crossing, including a pedestrian beacon signal, crosswalk striping, and signage

• Directional and rules signage, landscaping at intersections, and trash receptacles along the trail

Construction of this segment represents an investment of approximately $2.1 million, funded by SBMD as part of its 2015-2030 Comprehensive Plan. The trail was designed by Halff and constructed by Ballew Construction. HPB served as the project manager and oversaw implementation from design through completion.

This trail was made possible through a public-private partnership between the City of Houston and CenterPoint Energy that allows for the development of public trails within CenterPoint easements. By transforming utility corridors

into linear parks, it creates opportunities for more walkable and bikeable neighborhoods across Houston.

Now completed, this trail segment has become part of the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s park and trail inventory. SBMD will maintain the trail, including mowing, trash collection, and general amenities upkeep to ensure it remains a well-kept community asset for years to come.

The Spring Branch Trail is a transformative project for the area, offering not only a new way to move through the neighborhood but also a model for how underutilized land can be reimagined to support recreation, connectivity and economic development. As the trail network expands, it will provide greater opportunities for residents to engage with nature and the community — while promoting safe, active transportation options.

This newest segment builds on earlier progress to the east, where a completed portion of trail between Blalock Road and Wirt Road is already in use.

Eventually, all segments will link together to form a continuous greenway through the heart of Spring Branch — offering connectivity from Addicks Reservoir to White Oak Bayou Greenway.

Community turnout for the ribbon cutting event demonstrated strong support for the project, as well as recognition from local leaders including Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Amy Peck and officials from the offices of Congressman Wesley Hunt, Harris County Commissioners Lesley Briones, and Tom Ramsey. BikeHouston and FitHouston led inaugural bike rides and walks to introduce residents to the trail and emphasize its value as a recreational and transportation amenity.

The Spring Branch Trail is part of HPB’s broader mission to expand, improve, and protect parks and greenspace across the region. This project reinforces the organization’s commitment to equitable access to nature and high-quality greenspace infrastructure for all Houstonians.

MetroNational, Radom Capital break ground on Memorial City expansion north of I-10

HOUSTON – APRIL 29, 2025 – Radom Capital and generational real estate investment, development, and management firm MetroNational have officially broken ground on their collaborative Greenside project, located within landmark west Houston business and lifestyle destination Memorial City. Houston-based Endurance Builders is serving as the general contractor.

Conceived by the acclaimed firm Michael Hsu Office of Architecture as a vibrant, stylish and family-friendly community hub, Greenside will span 35,000 square feet of leasable space in three buildings. Approximately one-acre of programmed green space and patios will be framed by retail, restaurant and service providers, including signature wellness and beauty-focused tenants. The site will offer easy egress/ingress and provide ample surface parking.

Radom Capital Vice President Barton Kelly is overseeing leasing, and spaces are anticipated to be turned over to tenants for build out in late Q1 2026.

According to Kelly, “We’ve been thrilled by the market’s initial reception to Greenside. We have multiple leases in draft that are in various stages of negotiation from some fantastic food, fitness, and wellness operators accounting for approximately 75% of the available square footage.”

Upon completion next year, Greenside will serve as the new anchor for Memorial City’s neighborhood north of I-10. Situated at 1085 Gessner Road, it is just steps from bustling outposts of Kirby Ice House, Torchy’s Tacos and Mia’s Table and adjacent to Jimmy’s Place Park, which features a unique metal-and-concrete trail looping around a water basin.

Set against a backdrop of native plantings, a central lawn will be accented by festoon lighting, large canopy trellises and casual seating arrangements. An engaging children’s play structure is in the works. New pedestrian pathways will connect back to Gessner Road and Mathewson Lane, creating easy access to neighboring businesses and offices.

Greenside marks the first partnership between MetroNational and Radom Capital – known for award-winning projects such as M-K-T Heights and Montrose Collective – and reflects a united vision to create spaces that not only inspire but leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

“We’ve been eager to interject more unique moments and outdoor spaces into the Memorial City user experience, and Radom Capital and Michael Hsu Office of Architecture both exceed in creating those environments,” said Jason Johnson, CEO of MetroNational. “Greenside will offer a polished urban experience unique to the area”

For decades, Memorial City has attracted visitors, tenants and residents with its thoughtful mix of dining, retail, and community-driven amenities in addition to premier office, hotel, multifamily and healthcare components. More recently, the community has welcomed high-profile launches including Levi Goode’s Credence and Sidebar, Sambrooks Hospitality’s The Pit Room, FB Society’s Haywire and Japanese-based apparel brand Uniqlo’s first Texas location.

En Garde! Houstonians Explore the Classic Sport at Andrey Geva’s Alliance Fencing Academy

It is a combat technique that has thrilled audiences in movies like The Mask of Zorro, The Tree Musketeers, Robin Hood, The Princess Bride and many more. It’s a timeless sport with evidence dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece that’s still practiced today in colleges, private clubs, and the Olympics. It’s fast, elegant, exciting, and intelligent. And it’s a life sport embraced and beloved by devotees of all ages.

We’re speaking, of course, of fencing, one of the most thrilling, refined, and addictive sports around the world.

Andrey Geva –A Champion’s Life

In Houston, the headquarters for this classic sport is Alliance Fencing Academy, founded by US Olympic and National Coach Andrey Geva. His career –and life—are impressive. “ I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and learned fencing there, “ he says, “I immigrated to Israel in 1989 at the age of 24. I have represented Israel as an athlete and national coach in national and international competitions. In 2000, I was invited to work as a coach in Houston, Texas.”

As Geva explains, “After I finished my career as a national and international competitive fencer, I decided to continue my fencing career as a coach. I was driven by the desire to develop high-level national and international fencers who could achieve what I could not.”

Throughout his life he continues to excel. In 2006. “ I was named Developmental Coach of the Year by the U.S. Fencing Association, “he says.” I was the national and Olympic coach for Team USA for nine years. I have been inducted into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame, Class of 2024.”

Founding His Houston Academy

He opened Alliance Fencing Academy in 2004, with the goal of becoming one of the world’s foremost fencing schools.

Today, Alliance Fencing Academy provides fencing instruction to over 350 members of all ages and skill levels in Houston, Katy and The Woodlands. Alliance staff includes 10 professional coaches and 6 assistant coaches who have learned the Olympic sport of fencing in Cuba, Columbia, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and the United States. Alliance is home to 3 Olympians, 6 World Champions, 4 Pan American Champions, over 40 US National Champions, 26 Team USA World Team members, 11 NCAA individual champions and medalists.

four children of their own, all of whom are fencers. As his family demonstrates, “Fencing builds confidence, promotes teamwork and encourages the personal development your child needs to take the next steps in life.”

But it’s more than that. “Fencing is a smart and lifelong sport that develops many athletic skills as well as strategy and technique,” Geva states,.”It helps kids get into the best US universities and be a part of a fine, elegant community.”

Looking to the Future

It’s More Than Just Sword Play

For Geva, fencing is more than just a sport, it’s a metaphor for life, “It’s all about discovering the unique talent in every child, teenager or adult and bringing them to the highest level of performance,” he says. “We ensure that our coaches, staff and members promote good sportsmanship both on and off the strip.” Geva knows firsthand how fencing can enrich a child –he and his wife have

On any given day, you’ll find Geva at his academy, managing his business, working with his staff, promoting the sport of fencing, training recreational fencers, and honing the skills of high level competitive athletes.

Currently, he and the staff are preparing to welcome a new crop of youngsters to their yearly fencing Summer Camps.

“It inspires me to see that I am helping to make my family and my athletes happy and successful in fencing and in their personal lives,“ he says. “I want my academy to be a home for a future Olympic champion and to become one of the most successful fencing schools in the world.”

When all is said and done, He is grateful, hopeful, and fulfilled. “I love my work,” Geva concludes,” Every day is a unique, fun day.”

Fantastic Wines, Reasonable Prices

I mentioned before in this space, over the course of a year I taste probably close to 2,000 wines. The vast majority of those are either at formal tastings or are sent to me by various producers with the idea that I will review their wines; it’s one of the perks of writing about wine. We also buy wine on occasion for personal consumption. Most of our purchases is champagne since a) we love the stuff, and b) the producers of the world’s best sparkling wines don’t seem to feel the need to have their wines reviewed by schmucks like me.

There are times, however, that I purchase still wines for personal consumption and the only requirement there is that I like the wines. I know, it seems like a pretty obvious criterion but you would be surprised by the number of people who purchase wines based on factors other than what is actually in the bottle. Here are a few bottles that I have bought and consumed recently; there is no common theme among them other than they are tasty, generally available, relatively moderately priced (since I am a relatively cheap you-know-what), and I served them at a recent wine tasting at the Uptown Dance Company (a former cover story for Spring Branch Plus).

2023 Donnafugata SurSur Grillo, Sicilia, Italy: Retail $21. 100% Grillo. Ok, full disclosure: I love Donnafugata. Everyone I have ever met connected with the winery is among the nicest people on the planet. Sicily, where they are located, has to be one of the greatest places on earth, and their wines are simply fantastic. Except for this one. It tastes like dirty socks. Just kidding. It is delightful. It’s almost demoralizing, as I struggle to go through my daily routine knowing that out there, on the picturesque Italian island, there is a group of extremely nice people continually producing some of my favorite wines in the world without seemingly, the slightest hiccup. Grillo is the quintessential Western Sicilian white grape and this is a beautiful rendition: fruity, racy, tart, decisive. Ah, Donnafugata, you vixen, you never cease to show that it just might be possible to find paradise here on this earth. Excellent. 91 Points.

2023 Caves d’Esclans Whispering Angel Rosé, Côtes de Provence, France: Retail $25. Grenache, Cinsault, Rolle (Vermentino). A couple of decades ago, Sascha Lichine set out to make the greatest rosé in the world and with the much more expensive Garrus ($125), I feel he succeeded. The flagship wine, Whispering Angel is no slouch, however, and it is a fine rosé despite its ubiquity. And we drink a ton of it. Fruity, tart, balanced, layered and lengthy, all for about $15 at my local grocery store. Yeah. Giddy-up. Excellent. 92 Points.

2021 Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, CA: Retail $35. (Under $20 at my H-E-B). 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Rodney Strong is consistently one of the better producers in Sonoma County and this Alexander Valley Cab is always one of “must buys”. Fairly dark in the glass with aromas of plum, blackberry, a touch of earth, and a hint of oak. The palate is delightfully fruity, with oodles of dark berry and fleshy blue fruit. Add in some spice and plenty of intrigue and you get a solid California Cabernet Sauvignon from start to finish. Once again, I will scream from the mountain tops that Rodney Strong is one of the best values out there, and this Alexander Valley Cab has to be at or very near the top of the list. Excellent. 91 Points.

2018 Couly-Dutheil Clos de l’Echo, Chinon, France: Retail $40.100% Cabernet Franc. Easily my favorite wine from one of my favorite towns in France, Chinon, which has medieval charm, history, and several fantastic restaurants. Inky dark with a luscious, inviting nose of dark fruit (blackberry, plum), earth, a subtle floral aspect, a hint of vanilla, and layers of complexity and verve. Whoa. Yeah. Pretty amazing before even the first sip. The palate is equally, no, more opulent with considerable weight, depth, and complexity. This is simply an incredible wine (and for $33 at Spec’s? Forget about it) with incredible fruit, earth, tannin, a zingy tartness, and a finish that goes on for days. I loved the last bottle of this wine I tried (93 Points), but it seems to have improved. Outstanding Plus. 96 Points.

Nice Winery Expect Exceptional

Nice Winery isn’t just another tasting room—it’s a remarkable story of Houston grit, generosity, and a dream that came full circle right here in Spring Branch. Nestled at the corner of Westview Drive and Lumpkin Road (1220 Lumpkin Rd., Houston, TX 77043), this family-owned vineyard stands on land that was once a derelict junkyard, now transformed into three acres of organically farmed vines, a thriving vegetable garden, free-range chickens, and even 100,000 honey bees. As owner Ryan Levy puts it, “In the world, you’ve got things that are familyowned and operated, and then you’ve got those that are owned by a corporation… One of the tenets of our business is to build community and give back.”

Levy’s journey to winemaker began far from the vineyard. After graduating from Dulles High School, he earned a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo—“the only way I was able to go to college,” he admits—to attend Rice University. What started as a biochemistry major turned into a degree in economics, a stint in law school at UT, and eventually culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in France. “While I was in France, I fell in love with wine, as one does,” Levy laughs, and upon returning to Houston he balanced practicing law by day with running his first restaurant by night.

In 2007, he began formal wine training at UC Davis and embarked on the ambitious project of planting Houston’s first commercial vineyard within the city limits. That work paid off spectacularly: “Out of almost a thousand wineries from twenty-two countries, we were the number one winery in the entire competition based on the scores of our wines,” Levy beams, holding the belt-buckle trophies he’s won over two decades. Yet the trophies are only part of the story.

Giving back is woven into every bottle. Nice Winery produces three special-label wines whose profits support local charities: an annual Camp Periwinkle fundraiser featuring artwork by a child undergoing treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital (“A family who has a child who’s battling cancer… haven’t they paid enough of a price that we should be able to raise money to send their child away to camp?”), a rosé that recently netted a $40,000 donation to The Rose for free mammograms, and “Ariana,” which backs OpHeart’s 3D-printed heart models for infants with congenital defects. “A really big part of our mission here at Nice Winery is we are all about giving back,” Levy explains. “We make three wines that a hundred percent of the proceeds go back to local charities.”

Visitors don’t just pour a glass and go. Nice Winery specializes in guided wine experiences—no “belly up to the bar, rush them in, rush them out” tastings here.

Instead, guests book a session with one of five wine educators, tasting six wines expertly paired with chef-crafted bites by co-winemaker and executive chef Ian Eastveld. On Friday nights, members of the wine club gather in the vineyard for farm-to-table dinners featuring produce from Levy’s own organic garden—“We harvest from the vegetable garden and put that food on our wine club members’ plates,” he says—plus eggs laid by the on-site chickens and honey from the beehives.

Spring Branch has embraced the vineyard as its own. Neighbors who once drove by a junkyard now stop to watch grapevines climb where rusty RVs once sat. “I’m so excited that y’all are cleaning up this corner,” locals told Levy during the two-year rehab. Today, the corner has become a lively community hub where art, agriculture, and education converge.

Levy’s advice to anyone feeling tethered to a prescribed path? “Life is short. Do what you love. Follow your passion. You’ll never work a day if the thing that you do is something that you love.” With every vine pruned, every bottle labeled, and every scholarshipfunding competition belt buckle earned, Nice Winery proves that passion, perseverance, and a spirit of giving can turn even a junkyard into something extraordinary. Guests toasted to The Women’s Fund success and lifted their paddles up high while auctioneer Johnny Holloway of Johnny Bravo Productions led the live auction, which began with a surprise package featuring a round of handcrafted Old Fashioneds for the winner’s table and a legendary happy hour at Lee’s. TOP 5 BURGERS IN SB

Kyle Pierson | Facebook: TheBranchHTX Instagram: thebranchhtx

“A hamburger is perfection wrapped up in a bun.” - A. Bourdain

Ah, summer! It’s here and that makes me think of grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. It also got me thinking about where the best burgers in Spring Branch are available for the times when I don’t feel like making MY best burger myself. So I compiled a list for you. It’s “Top 5” but it should probably be #1 and then #s 4,5,6&7 because Numero Uno is just simply that far ahead of the rest.

But to keep it simple we’ll start with #5 - Taqueria El Super Taco (1418 Gessner). Yes, this is the same Taco Truck that made my “Best Taco Trucks” list. But it made that list because of its Hamburguesas and Perro Calientes. And that’s why it makes this list as well. Just go. Go. Have one of their burgers and get back to me. They’re awesome.

#4 - JLB Eatery (2420 Gessner). Their half pound burger is a massive, juicy handful of delishesness that’ll fill you up and have you making happy “Nom Nom” noises. If you’re feeling particularly gluttonous (my default stare of being) get the double meat, double cheese and throw some bacon and avocado on that bad boy.

#3 Stuffed Belly (8133 Long Point).

My #1 Niña’s favorite burger. And I’m not one to disagree with a fourteen year old girl. They’re scary. But she’s absolutely right. Their Belly Burgers is phenomenal. Two smashed burger patties with cheese, special sauce,

caramelized onions on a fat potato roll totally hits the spot. I usually get the Patty Melt and as a bonus they can make it on Keto Texas Toast for those of us watching our carbs. (Cuz y’all can see what a health nut I am.)

#2 Branding Iron (14226 Hempstead). I wrote about this one when I talked about my Hempstead Hwy “Staycation”. Tiny little roadside stand that only takes cash and the little Korean lady takes your order then makes the burger herself. Some of y’all wrote in to tell me that you didn’t like it and they weren’t good. I hate to tell you this - but you are wrong and I am right. This burger is fantastic. Cooking on a seasoned fifty year old flat top just gives your burgers a little sumpin’ sumpin’ that you can’t get any other way. Plus - it’s only, like, seven bucks! Hands down best burger value by far. I also added this as further proof of my righteousness - you absolutely CAN NOT stay in business five decades making crappy food. You can fake it for a little while, but if you are in business for half a century, you are doing something very right.

#1 Lunch at Sam’s (10151 Alfred Ln @ Gessner). I don’t really have anything to say. If you’ve read the things about my other favorite burgers, just know Lunch at Sam’s is better. Way better. They’re only open weekdays for breakfast and lunch so no dinner time or weekend awesomeness. But that’s okay. It’ll be the best lunch you have this week. It’s so good I’m just gonna stop writing right now and go get one.

The Bryant Sisters Athletic Excellence Runs

“It’s rare to find a family with three world class athletes,” says Noel Tolentino, founder of the 800 Club, as he speaks of the Bryant family. “Mr. T.,” as he’s known in the community, has worked with numerous students and their parents for years, providing the advice and counseling that lead to athletic and academic accomplishment, and guidance on how to best develop well-rounded students. He encouraged Laura Bryant to engage her girls in sports at a young age, and helped all three daughters prepare for college through The 800 Club.

What’s the “magic formula” necessary for creating this trio of champions? According to Tolentino, it starts with physical talent and participation in sports from an early age. Then, if you ask the Bryant sisters, it requires the right coaching, dedicated training, resilience after setbacks and injuries, perseverance, the ability to adjust and improve, a champion’s attitude, and a clear vision of a positive outcome. And of course, the support and encouragement of parents, coaches, peers, and faith leaders are equally as crucial.

This extraordinary mix of qualities is expressed uniquely in each of the Bryant girls. So, here’s a brief introduction to Claire, Cali, and Cate, the sisterhood of champions.

Meet Claire Bryant:

Education: Graduated from the University of Florida last year

Achievements: World Indoor Long Jump Champion, 3-time NCAA Long Jump Silver Medalist, 2024 Indoor and Outdoor Long Jump Champion, 16-time All American

Goals: To be an Olympian in the 2028 LA Games, To jump 7 meters this year,

To be an integral part of Bible Study/prayer groups at major meets in the professional track circuit.

Challenges: “My greatest challenge is feeling like I belong or that ‘I can do this.’ it is very difficult to reach your full potential if you’re not even sure if you should be in the spaces you are in.”

Inspirations: “I am inspired by my teammates’ work ethic, my coach’s positivity, my faith leader’s pursuit of the Lord, and my boyfriend’s empathy.“

Outside Interests: “I love hanging out with my friends– especially playing games like Bananagram and Catchphrase. I also really enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes! Really like just trying any new foods. I am a leader in college student ministry--it is very important to me and brings me so much fulfillment in life.“

Insight: “A lot of times before I jump I just say ‘this is awesome.’ Gratitude is so important and serves as a way to reorient how I view a situation. “

Meet Cali Bryant:

Education: Senior at Memorial High School, Vanderbilt University Track Scholarship

Achievements: Texas Relays High Jump Champion and Texas 6 A High Jump Silver Medalist

Goals: To have a fun and successful career

Challenges: “Injuries. Track is very taxing on your body and it is easy to get hurt. I wear a brace now when I compete because I was constantly twisting my ankles.”

Inspirations: “My greatest inspiration has been my older sister Claire. Watching her compete at Florida and go on to winning the World Championships is extremely inspiring! She is 5 years older than me, so she has gone through what I am about to experience.”

Outside Interests: “I love going to Bible Studies!”

Insight: “I give all glory to God for my success in track. My coaches Margaret and TJ have poured their devotion into me since I was in elementary school and helped me become a successful athlete.”

Inspirations: “My greatest inspiration has been my sister Claire. She has had such a successful track career, and I hope to follow in her footsteps.”

Outside Interests: “I raised a market lamb for the Spring Branch FFA Program. Through FFA I experienced a new community, and the fun of raising an animal.”

Insight: “My mom has been my biggest supporter! She would watch me at every practice while always encouraging me.”
