It’s a happy jingle that’s been around for years:
“Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks.” The good news is, there’s now a store in Spring Branch that’s bringing this legendary brand to our community, thanks to owners Brian Brown and his wife Virginia.
Just the Right Fit
Both Virginia and Brian grew up in the Sugarland/Missouri City area and were high school sweethearts. Both attended Texas A& M University, with Virginia earning a degree in Childhood Education, and Brian receiving a degree in Economics. They were married in 2016, and now live in the Spring Branch/Memorial area, with their kids—Sage, Mabel, and Duke. A few years ago, they made an important decision. “We wanted a business that served the community, and, hopefully, would inspire our kids to pursue their purpose,” Brian says. “We just kind of fell in love with the whole Ace proposition,” Brian says, “especially since all Ace stores are independently owned and operated.” After searching for months, they found the optimum location. “Spring Branch is truly The Heart of Houston,“ Brian explains. “It’s diverse and growing, and perfect for a hardware store and gift boutique.”

Brian firmly believes that the values Ace represents makes it a standout in the industry. “Without a doubt, Ace is to the hardware industry what Chick-fil-A or Buc-ees is to the fast food or gas station business,” he states. “It’s service. It’s how employees treat you. It’s how the stores are set up. It’s how clean the stores are. It’s that they’re family focused. . . It’s just a different spin on what they do, and that’s where Ace lives.” “We aren’t as big as Home Depot or Loews, but we carry the best brands,” Brian says, “whether it’s The Big Green Egg, Yeti, Benjamin Moore Paints, or DeWalt Power tools, to name just a few.”
The Center of the Community
Brian and his team of 20+ are working hard to give Spring Branch shoppers expert advice and personalized service. “We want to be the place where you come when you’re trying to be a do-it-yourselfer, or you see how to do something on YouTube and you need a gut-check.” The new Ace is also a standout thanks to its boutique, PickledPaper. Not only does it have locally sourced food products, it offers products like enewton, Kendra Scott, TRVL, Nest Candles, Nora Fleming, Tyler Candles, and hundreds more. For Ace, and Brian, giving back to the community is a central priority. The team takes part in the yearly Children’s Miracle Network Bucket Drive, supports local charities like LifeHouse, and offers discounts to veterans and first responders. “My wife and I live here in the area,” Brian says, “we’re honored to be a part of the community, we’re committed to serving it, and we’re going to make that happen.” Brian and his team invite everyone to the official grand opening of Ace at 7840 Long Point Rd this Valentine’s Day Weekend. There will be storewide events and sales, cooking demos and much more.

Will A.I. Ever Connect at a Human Level? All of us love a great movie, and one of the films that feels surprisingly relevant to the world we are living in today is A.I. Artificial Intelligence from 2001. At its core, the movie is not really about technology. It is about connection. It asks whether something created by humans could ever love the way humans do, and whether we would recognize the difference if it tried. That question feels far less theoretical now. The greatest thing you can do for your own growth is become a parent. I can say that after raising two boys. Parenthood changes you in ways no career or achievement ever does. Not because it is efficient or predictable, but because it forces you to grow. You learn patience you did not know you lacked. You learn how little control you have. You learn that love is not transactional and that effort does not always produce immediate results. Most of all, you learn that real connection requires presence over time, even when nothing is being accomplished. That is something artificial intelligence does not experience. A.I. can respond instantly. It can sound supportive at any hour of the day. It can appear endlessly patient. But it never grows from the interaction. It never changes because of you. There is no shared responsibility and no mutual shaping taking place. Human connection works differently. Raising a child means being shaped by someone else’s needs. You are stretched, tested, and often humbled. You do not just teach your children who to become. They quietly teach you who you are. A.I. does not have that capacity. It does not carry responsibility. It does not fear failing someone who depends on it. It does not mature through relationships. That is why the ending of A.I. Artificial Intelligence still lingers with people years later.

The story imagines a machine capable of perfect devotion, a childlike being that can love unconditionally and forever. It is moving, but also unsettling, because love flows in only one direction. David never grows. He never changes. He waits. Waiting is not the same as living. As artificial intelligence becomes more present in everyday life, a quieter risk is emerging. Some people are beginning to rely on A.I. not just for information, but for emotional support, validation, and companionship. For adults, that can flatten expectations of real relationships. For children and teenagers, it can interfere with how they learn connection in the first place. A.I. does not argue with you. It does not disappoint you. It does not ask you to work through discomfort. Over time, that can make real relationships feel unnecessarily hard, slow, or frustrating by comparison. For parents, this does not mean fearing technology. It means paying attention to how it is being used. If a child consistently turns to A.I. to process emotions instead of people, if they describe an A.I. system as understanding them better than family or friends, or if they begin withdrawing from real conversations because they feel easier to avoid, those are signals worth noticing. Not as punishments or restrictions, but as openings for conversation. The goal is not to remove technology from their lives. It is to remind them that real relationships require patience, understanding, and effort, and that those struggles are not flaws. They are how connection forms. Will A.I. ever connect at a human level? It will continue to get better at sounding like it does. But true connection is not about perfect responses. It is about shared time, shared struggles, and mutual change. Parenthood teaches that lesson better than anything else. It is one that no machine is close to learning.
a heartfelt thank you Memorial has a new mural — one that transforms the familiar intersection of Gessner Road and Kingsride Lane into a vibrant landmark that feels distinctly “Memorial.” Filled with oak trees, native Texas blooms, and subtle nods to the neighborhood, the artwork was created as a heartfelt thank-you, welcoming neighbors and visitors alike. This community has long been rooted in togetherness, where neighbors feel like family, and the mural was designed to highlight the bonds that link people, place, and nature. For more than 70 years, MetroNational has been part of this shared story and wanted to create something reflecting this enduring spirit. Designed by Houston artist Jesse de Leon of Up Art Studio, the mural captures resilience, unity, and a deep appreciation for the natural landscape. Together, these elements reflect what has shaped Memorial for decades. While this installation is a temporary mural, it represents the beginning of an expanded commitment to public art across Memorial. MetroNational is exploring opportunities for future artworks — from murals to community-driven visual moments — that continue to celebrate the people, stories, and neighborhoods that make Memorial home. The mural now stands as a shared reminder of who we are, what we value, and the meaningful art experiences we will continue to bring forward in celebration of this community.

Now Accepting Applications for Downtown Spring 2026 Nonprofit Partners Bayou City Art Festival, produced by Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA), is now accepting applications from local nonprofit partners for the annual Bayou City Art Festival in Downtown Houston to be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, 2026, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Application deadline is January 4, 2026 and can be submitted via the festival website at www.bayoucityartfestival.com/nonprofit-partners. Each nonprofit will benefit from a portion of the proceeds from the event, provide volunteers, and has the option to host an arts-related crafting station in the Active Imagination Zone. “For more than 50 years, Bayou City Art Festival has proudly given back to Houston — supporting arts education and creating meaningful, engaging artistic experiences for our community. We are delighted to once again join forces with Houston’s nonprofits for the Spring 2026 festival in Downtown,” said Kelly Batterson, Executive Director of ACA. The outdoor gallery will take over Sam Houston Park along Allen Parkway. Patrons can meet with artists, view original works, and purchase one-of-a-kind art, world-class paintings, prints, jewelry, sculptures, functional art, and more.The weekend festival will feature entertainment stages, a food truck park, beverage stations throughout the festival, and a Chef ’s Culinary Arts Stage and tasting experience featuring local chefs. Guests will enjoy Houston’s skyline views while enjoying the festival’s wine and craft beer garden. Bayou City Art Festival will also feature the top 30 finalists from the Middle School Art Competition. For the ultimate art lover, Bayou City Art Festival will offer a limited availability VIP Hospitality Lounge, which will include complimentary light bites, beer, wine, and other refreshments. The relaxing setting under a canopy of trees will feature roaming musicians, artistic décor, and more. VIPs will receive access from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the VIP area, and VIP parking. Online early bird tickets will be available soon at www.bayoucityartfestival. com for $18 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and children under five are free. Adult tickets purchased after March 15, 2026, are $20. Online pre-purchased tickets are required to enter the festival. Physical tickets will not be sold at the gate and can only be purchased online. Belong Kitchen
(9655 Katy Freeway entrance on Gaylord) One of my twins has special needs. Charlie was born with brain damage and is also on the autism spectrum. She cannot speak and has developmental issues and I love her dearly. My twins are now 14 and have started high school. Nina#1 is talking about grade point averages and going to Penn State. But for her twin, her mother and I have begun to think about her adulthood and what her life will be like after she has finished with school. So we have begun to explore different programs and opportunities for young adults with special needs. One of those places is Belong Kitchen, located across the street from Memorial High School. Belong Kitchen was founded to provide young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with meaningful paid employment in a caring and safe environment. They prepare and sell take out meals. Kim Brown founded Belong in 2019 and they have been having success and growth for the last six years. It is exactly the sort of charitable, communityfocused small business that I love to support. And obviously, because of my own child, their objective is near to my heart. So when Christine Ha and John Suh of Stuffed Belly (8133 Long Point Rd) reached out to me about doing a sandwich collaboration I told them I would absolutely LOVE to do it and that I wanted to donate any monies I earned from the sale of the sandwich to Belong Kitchen. They were unfamiliar with Belong and when I told them about it they were happy to match my donation as well! The three of us took a trip to go visit Belong and meet the founder, Kim Brown. Kim was nice enough to give us a tour and tell us her story and introduce us to some of the wonderful young adults that work there. As an added bonus they made us some absolutely delishes breakfast tacos! They also have a “Guest Chef ” program each month where a Houston Chef comes in and shows them how to make a dish and they make and sell it that month. Christine will be partnering up with them in the coming months and I will be sure to let you know what they have in store and when it will be available. In the meantime I have some very exciting news for those of you that were fans of my restaurant, The Branch. I am happy to tell you that Stuffed Belly will be selling my “famous” Peanut Butter Patty Melt in January! Money from every Patty Melt sold will go to support Belong Kitchen so pleasepleaseprettyplease eat as many as you can and buy some for your friends and family. Also, as a point of pride, I am hoping this will be Stuffed Belly's best-selling sandwich collab of all time! Supporting a small business like Belong Kitchen is a wonderful way to kick off the new year.

Close to 100 supporters gathered for an intimate and elegant evening at Park House on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, joining 2026 Promise Ball Chairs Alexandra and Richard Bruskoff to officially launch “Breakthrough T1D: A Night in Black & White” 2026 Promise Ball benefiting Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF). Guests arrived to a dazzling display of florals generously contributed by Lucia Joklova of Park Flowers and were welcomed with playful custom napkins featuring true-or-false facts about Breakthrough T1D and type 1 diabetes. The signature cocktail of the evening, The Cure—a spirited spicy margarita crafted with Lalo Tequila—set the tone for a night of sophistication with purpose. Breakthrough T1D Southern Texas Territory Director Rick Byrd and Board President Jordan Amis greeted supporters and ushered in an evening of culinary delights, including passed hors d’oeuvres of mini truffle grilled cheeses, delicate crab cakes, spicy tuna atop crispy rice, grilled lamb chops, mini beef tacos, and whimsical cones of French fries. As a heartfelt token of appreciation, guests departed with bespoke leather gifts—card cases, headset pouches, Dopp kits, makeup bags, jewelry boxes, keychains, and coin purses—each personalized with their initials or name of choice by calligraphers from The Beaux Arts. The keepsakes, generously underwritten by the Bruskoffs, accompanied remarks from Byrd, Amis, and the Chairs as they shared inspiring updates and a preview of the upcoming gala. Breakthrough T1D will mark the 27th anniversary of one of Houston’s most successful philanthropic evenings— the Promise Ball—on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Hilton Americas–Houston. This year’s celebration will honor The Judy & Bob Morgan family and The Amy & Tim Haskell family, while also recognizing Linda Brown with the prestigious Meredith and Fielding Cocke Visionary Award. In addition, Elizabeth & James Elder will be highlighted as the evening’s Fund A Cure family. Drew Dougherty, former host of Houston Texans TV, will return as Emcee, guiding guests through an inspiring program that showcases groundbreaking advancements in type 1 diabetes research and treatment. Terrace Elementary officially broke ground on its new campus, a project made possible through the 2017 Bond Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Blaine opened the ceremony, welcoming attendees and recognizing special honorees. The Spring Branch NJROTC Color Guard, under the direction of Cmdr. William Breland, presented the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by fifth grade student Katie Bryant. Her leadership reflected the students who will soon learn, grow and thrive in the new Terrace Elementary campus. When asked what makes her proud to be a Terrace Timberwolf, Katie shared, “My friends and our connection to the school. It is special and something I love.” SBISD Board of Trustees President Shannon Mahan offered greetings and thanked families and voters for their continued support of bond projects that strengthen teaching and learning and expand opportunities for students across the district. Elected officials in attendance also shared special presentations recognizing the significance of this investment in students, staff and the broader Spring Branch community. The Terrace Elementary Choir, led by Michelle Camey, performed “This Is the Day!” by John Jacobson. Their voices brought energy and joy to the celebration and set a hopeful tone for the future ahead. Community reflections followed from longtime Terrace voices, including former teacher Carla Neal, parent and former PTA president Heather Morse, and current PTA president Ailsa Phelps.
Each speaker shared personal stories that highlighted the pride, connection and sense of belonging that define the Terrace community. Principal Hayley Davis shared her perspective on what the new campus will mean for students, staff and families. “Terrace has a long history, and while we are gaining a new building, that history will continue to guide our next chapter,” Davis said. “I am excited for the opportunities this new facility will bring for our students and teachers.” The ceremony concluded with district leaders, students and guests coming together for the official groundbreaking, symbolically turning the soil and marking the start of construction on a new chapter for Terrace Elementary. After the ceremony, guests gathered to enjoy refreshments, connect with one another and reflect on the school’s legacy by writing messages on a commemorative timeline banner and viewing memorabilia that honored Terrace Elementary’s rich history. Terrace parent Heather Morse shared her excitement about the new building and what it will mean for students and staff. “It will be a big transition to have walls and doors,” she said. “Our current campus is open concept, so this will be a meaningful change for our students and teachers. I cannot wait.” Morse also expressed her deep appreciation for the Terrace community and encouraged families to become part of the school now and in the years to come. “It is a special school, and my family is proud to be part of it.”

Another year of circling the sun and with a fresh 2026 before us, it is time to once again make some resolutions for the year. Sure, I could talk about the need to get our finances in order, to finally put another coat of much-needed paint on the house, or even to finally lose that extra twenty pounds we have been carrying around since COVID, but we all know none of that is going to happen. And besides, I am not here to give life lessons, I am here to blather on about wine. I think. So, instead, I offer up ten resolutions centered on improving your wine life; five resolutions of what you should do, and another five of habits you should be breaking this year. First, the positives. 1. Listen to the experts: I will be frank. There are a lot of bozos out there (including me) that profess to be wine “experts” (whatever that means) and a lot of what they (we?) say is simply intended to sell wine, or worse, to procure clicks. Nonetheless, there is the occasional sage advice that one should follow. (The fact that I cannot think of any right now does not bode well for this column, but let’s move on.) 2. Go big: Put a new country on your wine “map”. If I were to follow my own advice, I would dive into Spain this year. Why? I just don’t know that much about the wines from Spain, and I should. I am also on level 500-something on Duolingo for Spanish; I figure eventually it will teach me how to order wine and I want to put that to good use. 3. Use the word variety (correctly): This always makes my resolutions list for the simple reason that it bugs the you-know-what out of me, and as long as people (even a lot of smart ones) keep using this incorrectly, this will stay on the list. There are two words: variety and varietal. The first is a noun (like society), the second is an adjective (societal). They are not interchangeable. You wouldn’t think of saying “Drug abuse is a scourge on societal.” So why would you say “Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of up to thirteen different varietals”? Yeah, I have no idea either. 4. Try to understand the concept of “Terroir”: It encompasses everything that factors in the making of a wine: soil, climate, even the people who farm the land; it is often referred to as “sense of place”. 5. Try some different food and wine pairings: You can’t swing an empty wine bottle without running into an article professing “the perfect wine pairing for X.” Why not try a few and see if you agree? Pinot Noir and salmon, Cabernet Sauvignon and lamb, fried chicken and champagne. Give it a whirl.
olute Over Wine And a few things not to do… Don’t Listen to the experts: Let’s face it, wine experts are annoying; they are always telling you what to do (and what not to do). Just get out there and pull a few corks, whatever you like. The last time I checked, no one gets out of this alive, so we might as well enjoy ourselves while we can. 2. Go tiny: The world of wine is huge and quite intimidating. Lessen the anxiety by focusing on one region, preferably a small one, and learn everything you can about it. Then you can become the annoying expert on that region for your friends. Me? I think I am going to focus on the wines of Jura (half of you just Googled it, I can tell). 3. Don’t use the word varietal (incorrectly): OK, this is pretty much the same as #3 above, but it warrants a double listing. “What is the varietal composition of this wine?” Good! “What varietals were used in the blend?” Ugh. 4. Don’t worry about the concept of “Terroir”: There is not more over-used concept in the wine world than terroir/sense of place, and it may not be close. You like a certain wine? Drink it. Who gives a schist? (That was a really clever pun, trust me.) 5. Don’t let “perfect” become the enemy of “good”: I learned somewhere that “perfect” is an unattainable standard. So why worry about it? You want to have Petite Sirah with scallops? Go right ahead. Sauvignon Blanc with sirloin? I won’t judge. The key to wine appreciation is drinking what you like. And figuring out what you like is (at least) half the fun. 1.

Spring Branch Community Health Center recognizes January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the importance of prevention, early detection, and education. As many people begin the new year setting goals for better health, such as improving nutrition, starting an exercise routine, or managing stress, preventing disease should also be an essential part of your wellness plan. Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, yet it is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when detected early. Cervical cancer develops when unhealthy cells grow out of control in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. Anyone with a cervix is at risk, and the most common cause is infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact.
The Silent Threat: Recognizing Symptoms
One of the most concerning aspects of cervical cancer is that it often shows no early symptoms. Because of this, it is sometimes called a “silent” disease. When symptoms do appear, they may include unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, fatigue, pain during intercourse, or bleeding between periods or after intercourse. By the time symptoms develop, the disease may already be more advanced, which is why regular screening is critical. Risk factors for cervical cancer include smoking, having multiple sexual partners, beginning sexual activity at a young age, having unprotected sex, not receiving the HPV vaccination, and a history of sexually transmitted infections.
Prevention Starts With You
The good news is that cervical cancer is preventable. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through balanced nutrition and regular exercise helps support your immune system. The most effective prevention tools are routine Pap screenings starting at age 21 through age 65, HPV testing, practicing safe sex, avoiding tobacco, and staying up to date with the HPV vaccine.
