The Mindfulness Movement begins right here in Spring Branch with family owned, Zen Kidz TX.

The Mindfulness Movement Begins Here

There’s a place in our neighborhood where everyday kids are learning mindfulness and gratitude. They’re dancing and wiggling, and assuming classic yoga postures that give them flexibility and grace. And they’re picking up the spiritual and physical tools that enable them to deal with the stress and pressure of today’s challenges with an easier and more thoughtful demeaner.

The place where all this is happening is called Zen Kidz TX, and it’s not in India or the Far East. Zen Kidz is a colorful and cozy studio here in Spring Branch, presided over by owner, instructor, and creative mastermind, Julie McConn. And it’s the only yoga studio in the Houston area that’s just for kids.

From “No Way” to “Namaste”

For Julie, the road to yoga began in 2010, after she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication and earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Houston. Julie and a friend obtained teaching positions in Seoul, Korea, and to prevent homesickness, they signed up for all kinds of classes to fill their spare time.

Yoga was one of those classes, and Julie was skeptical. She told her friend, “I’m not sure yoga is my thing, and I don’t think I’ll ever get into meditating.” It only took a few sessions to prove her wrong, and soon both of them were going to four classes a week.

In 2015, fueled by her passion, Julie extended her proficiency by completing 200 hours of teacher training with Shades of Yoga in Bali, Indonesia. After that, she continued doing yoga teacher trainings specifically for kids. She completed the Cosmic Kids training and then, another with Rainbow Yoga. Though she learned much from these trainings, she created many of the games and activities she uses today through separate research into mindfulness.

As Julie tells it, “I was an elementary school teacher for 8 years in total, and I absolutely LOVE working with kids, but I wanted a change. In the summer of 2015, I was moving back to Houston after teaching 2nd grade in Saudi Arabia for two years, and I knew I didn’t want to return to the classroom. I knew that creating a yoga and mindfulness curriculum for kids would allow me to continue working with kids in the way I most enjoy - almost like the role of a counselor.”

In 2016, Julie started bringing her curriculum into private schools in Houston, continued to evolve and innovate her offerings, and then opened Zen Kidz Studio in 2023.

Mindfulness in Motion

With her Zen Kidz Studio, Julie has managed to create an experience unlike any other in Houston.

“Some adult yoga studios do offer the occasional class for kids, but there are no studios that are solely childfocused, she says. “I actually consider this business to be more comparable to kids’ gymnastics, dance, or music classes. I would put Zen Kidz classes more in the category of activities for kids to learn, grow and develop, and so I don’t really think it compares with any other yoga studios.”

fostering quality time with their grown-up.

Yoga and Mindfulness (ages 4-7)

Class Experience:

Yoga and mindfulness is all about stillness AND movement! Kids practice breathing techniques and meditate, but also stretch, strengthen, balance, and wiggle. In this class, the students have a blast putting together different sequences, playing games, dancing, and creating their own yoga adventures!

Currently, she offers three different class formats: Yoga Through Music and Movement: For Littles and Their Grown-ups (ages 2-5) Class Experience:

Yoga Through Music and Movement gives families the chance to bond while learning poses in a fun and playful way! In this class we will practice yoga poses guided by songs, props, dancing, and imaginative play. Yoga helps children AND adults learn techniques for concentrating, reducing stress, and connecting to their bodies, and in this class there is no expectation. The idea is to let children participate and have fun, not to ensure they are executing poses with perfect form. This class is a great way to introduce yoga and intentional movement to young children, by exposing them to the yoga environment, while

Here, the focus is on developing mindfulness by learning ways to quiet our mind, practicing gratitude, understanding the power of our thoughts and words, and ways to deal with big feelings. Kids’ yoga helps to increase confidence, build concentration, develop self-awareness, and manage stress.

Mastering Mindfulness Through Yoga and Art

(ages 7-11)

Class Experience:

Mindfulness means paying attention to what is happening right now with kindness, curiosity, and appreciation. In this class, participants develop mindfulness through meditation, breath-work, arts and crafts, yoga poses, and thoughtful reflection. Activities are structured around how to process big feelings, the power of our thoughts and words, ways to quiet our mind and be more present, and the importance of loving yourself and others through kindness, gratitude, and empathy. This class helps children feel peaceful, share feelings, and improve self-esteem.

Each lesson starts with breath-work, meditation, and yoga poses. Then there’s a discussion about the topic of focus for that day, and kids craft a mindful tool or make a piece of art to help reinforce what they have learned. On days when we finish early, the kids have time to learn and practice tricks on the yoga trapeze! This apparatus builds strength, confidence, decision making skills, and flexibility.

Seasonal Sessions and On-Going Offerings

The 10-week seasonal sessions at Zen Kidz are among the most popular and beneficial.

Right now, the Summer Session is winding down and the Fall Session is open for enrollment. The Fall Season begins on September 7th, and meets for 10 weeks. Classes align with the 4 seasons of the year, which means a little shorter commitment than a lot of other kid activities. BUT it is required that you sign up for a full season.

As Julie explains, “The lessons really build upon each other. Toddlers don’t always follow along right away. They need to watch a few times and get used to the class structure before they feel comfortable in their environment to fully thrive.

“And with the older kids”, she continues, “it takes time to master some of the poses, and consistency helps with strength and flexibility. Most importantly, mindfulness cannot be taught and remembered after just 1-2 classes. It takes time to cover the many different concepts, and kids need to learn strategies for incorporating these into their daily life - which takes time and repetition.”

Zen Kidz Camps are a great way to experience the fun and physicality of yoga. There are week-long yoga and mindfulness camps off-and-on throughout the summer, and single-day camps when kids have a holiday from school - like Thanksgiving and winter breaks, President’s Day, etc.

Be on the lookout for KIDZ NIGHT OUT one Saturday each month. The next KNO event is on August 9th from 5:00-9:00. Parents can drop off their kiddos while they go enjoy one of the amazing restaurants nearby.

And, FYI, Zen Kidz also hosts birthday parties, creates lessons for Girl Scout troops to earn badges, and offers

private and small group lessons upon request.

The Spring Branch Connection

In the case of Julie, gratitude, kindness, generosity and appreciation are not only qualities she teaches, but attributes she exhibits in her everyday life in Spring Branch.

She’s been here for five years, and still conducts after school programs in eight schools as well. She and her family take full advantage of the many options for food and fun. And she is quick to point out “the warm and welcoming nature of the community.”

Finally, Julie is especially grateful for the good lives she and her family are building in this special part of town.

“My daughter’s name is Lilly, and she is 5 years old. She definitely thinks it’s pretty cool that her mom owns a yoga studio for kids! She attends some of the camps and classes every now and then, and overall just loves being at the studio with me. She gets to learn about all of the different mindful tools that I teach, and it makes my heart so happy when she initiates using one when she’s having big feelings! It’s really special to see those skills in action in real time.”

“My husband’s name is Tim. He has been very supportive, and I wouldn’t have the time or energy to put into running my own business without all the things he handles at home and with our daughter.”

Julie, Lilly, and Tim invite you to drop and by their special place here in Spring Branch to enjoy the unique experience they have created – Zen Kidz TX.

Zen Kidz is located at 8330 Long Point Rd. Unit E in the heart of Spring Branch.

Back to School, Back to Health: Why Vaccines Matter This Season

As families prepare for the excitement of a new school year like buying supplies, adjusting routines, and setting goals, it’s also the perfect time to prioritize something just as important: your child’s health. At Spring Branch Community Health Center, we’re proud to recognize August as Immunization Awareness Month, and we’re here to help families like yours start the school year strong, safe, and protected.

A Fresh Start Begins with Protection

Vaccines are an important part of your child’s back-to-school checklist. They help protect against serious illnesses like the flu, whooping cough, meningitis, HPV, and more. Illnesses can spread quickly in classrooms, lunchrooms, and sports fields. By getting your child vaccinated, you’re giving them a healthier start to the school year and helping protect other students too.

Required Vaccines for School-Aged Children May Include:

• TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough)

• Meningitis

• HPV

• Flu vaccine

• COVID-19 (still recommended)

If you’re unsure whether your child is up to date, our care team can review their vaccine records and help you plan your next steps.

Caring for the Whole Family

We understand that parents want what’s best for their children. It’s normal to have questions or concerns about side effects or costs. Some children may feel tired or sore after a shot, but these side effects are usually mild and go away in a day or two. They’re a sign that the body is building protection.

Affordable Care, Without the Worry

At SBCHC, we’re committed to making vaccines accessible for all families. Insurance is not required, and we also accept Medicaid and CHIP. Whether you have questions, need guidance, or just want to feel reassured, we’re here to support you.

Let’s Get Ready—Together

As you prepare your child for the school year ahead, don’t forget the important role vaccines play in keeping them safe, healthy, and ready to learn. Call us at (713) 462-6565 or visit SBCHC.net to schedule their immunizations today.

From backpacks to booster shots, we’re with you every step of the way.

Meet New Housman Elementary Principal Asna Masood

Asna Masood begins the 2025–2026 school year as Principal of Housman Elementary (HSE), bringing with her 18 years of educational experience—three of them within SBISD.

A dedicated educator and leader, Mrs. Masood is deeply committed to championing her school community.

When asked to define her leadership philosophy in one word, she chose empowerment

“I believe the most effective leadership creates conditions where students, teachers, and staff feel confident, capable, and trusted to grow, lead, and innovate,” she says. “When people feel empowered, they take ownership of their roles, push boundaries, and work collaboratively toward shared goals. Empowerment builds a culture of trust, continuous learning, and collective success.”

Looking ahead, Mrs. Masood is excited to work alongside her team to nurture leadership at every level and foster a culture of growth for students, staff, and the entire school community. Her goal is to build a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where everyone feels seen, supported, and encouraged to thrive.

“I want our community to know I’m here to serve and support them. My door is always open. I care deeply about the well-being and success of

every person on campus, and I’m committed to growing together.”

As she leads Housman Elementary forward, she remains grounded in SBISD’s Core Value of Every Child: Every child. Every day. Every minute. Every way.

Words of Wisdom:
“Lead with heart, listen with purpose, and never underestimate the power of small acts of kindness.”

Just for Fun:

When she’s not on campus, Mrs. Masood enjoys traveling, exploring new places, and playing soccer with her family.

“What’s

new, Pussycat?”

Summertime is a rough one for the restaurant industry. My restaurant, The Branch, actually closed up shop on August 8th, 2022 so I know what I’m speaking about. (Which reminds me I have a really crappy anniversary coming up). I had withered Harvey and the Freeze and even COVID for the most part. But when they lifted most of the travel restrictions a huge number of my customers went on vacation and that, unfortunately, was the final nail in my coffin. *sad trombone*

So when new places open up in the summer, it really strikes a chord with me and I REALLY root for those guys to succeed.

Here in the Spring Branch area we have had three really excellent new places open up in the last couple weeks, two on the north side, one on the south side, and I want to encourage all of you to give them a try and put them in your regular rotation.

First up - Kebab Land (@kebablands 10088 Long Point). My new friend Mike just opened up this Syrian-inspired Mediterranean joint on Long Point near Gessner and it is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. So far I’ve tried the Lamb Kebabs (duhdoy), the Falafel, and the Beef & Chicken Shwarma. Mike is KILLING it, y’all. His seasonings and marinades are fantastic! The meat is charred on the grill nicely, but still juicy and tender. His hummus and dips and salads are also fabulous. You can also build a bowl with everything your sweet little heart desires! They are primarily a drive thru and are available on most third party delivery apps. As an added bonus for my fellow night owls - they stay open til midnight Sun-Thurs and are open til 3am on Friday and Saturday.

Next we have Chubbies Sliders & Tenders (@chubbiessliders 14775 Memorial Drive) on the Southside. Chef Vince Boisaubin (@713chef) opened up this lunchtime side hustle in their Catering SpaceSouthern Standard Hospitality (@southernstandardcatering) and they are serving up a Chef-driven menu of Sliders and Chicken Sammies (both grilled and fried). Standouts for me were the Firecracker Grilled Chicken with a Revenge Sauce that really brought the heat as well as the Cowgirl Slider which is topped with a Smoky Brisket that was simply incredible. They are currently only serving at lunchtime on weekdays and should be available on all the delivery platforms but the time you’re reading this.

Finally - Numero Three - Sandwich Phở Reel (@sandwichphoreel 9550 Kempwood). They JUST opened a couple days before I wrote this so the menu is super limited right now - Bahn Mis, Vermicelli Bowls, Bun Bo Hue, and what might very well be my new favorite Phở in SB. Owners Ruby and Tina are super duper sweet and love to meet all their guests. They told me they will be rolling out a full menu with a big emphasis on Seafood in the coming months. Also - they make a Cheesesteak Bahn Mi. Awesome.

So go say “Hi!” and welcome them to the neighborhood. And please do me a solid and tell them Kyle says,” ‘Sup”. I’d really appreciate it.

Michelin Whets Spring Branch’s Appetite with Its First Texas Guide

ere was plenty for Houston and the entire Lone Star State to celebrate as top chefs, gourmets, restaurateurs, and foodies assembled here in Houston on November 11 th for the unveiling of the 1st Michelin Guide for Texas.

Why It Matters

Being recognized by the famed MICHELIN Guide is one of the most prestigious recommendations a restaurant can earn. Today, there are more than 60 MICHELIN Guides covering restaurants in 45 destinations worldwide. North American guides cover New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C, California, Miami/Orlando/Tampa, Florida, Toronto, Vancouver, Colorado and Atlanta.

Getting out of Dodge, er Houston

Launching the premier MICHELIN Texas Guide here in the Bayou City not only put Texas but Houston on the map. According to Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of e MICHELIN Guides, the Bayou City was chosen as host because “Houston is full of culinary innovation and world-class hospitality, which goes hand in hand with our values at e MICHELIN Guide.”

THE RATING PROCESS

To achieve their ratings, restaurants are visited several times by Michelin’s trained anonymous inspectors, whose criteria includes: product quality; mastery of cooking techniques; harmony of flavors; the personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine; and consistency over time and across the entire menu.

WHO WON?

Growing up, August always meant three things to me: back to school, the return of college football, and my birthday. Unfortunately, I only saw one of those annual events as a positive so August has always been a bit bittersweet for me.

STAR POWER

Michelin awards One-Star ratings to fine dining restaurants with excellent cuisine, service and ambiance. In Texas, 15 restaurants achieved that honor. In Houston, those included:

Then we moved to Houston and I had to add another to the list: the need to escape the oppressive heat.

• BCN Taste and Tradition (Spanish)

• March (Creative Mediterranean)

• Tatemo (Mexican)

BIB GOURMANDS

Of course that sentiment is not limited to the eighth month, but by the time August rolls around I am determined to spend at least part of it outside of Texas, preferably in another country, no matter how much travel had occurred up to that point. Of course, during the month of August, it can be fairly hot in most wine regions in the northern hemisphere, those grapes need to get ripe, after all. But that presents the added benefit for Houston travelers to be able to find amusement when people in other parts of the world complain about their cute little version of “heat”.

Truth Barbeque (Barbeque)

In addition Steve McDonald at, Pappas Bros Steakhouse won the special Sommelier Award.

ATTENTION, SPRING BRANCH FOODIES:

ough none of our delicious neighborhood favorites were designated –yet---those Michelin evaluators are always at work, and there’s always next year. And since Spring Branch is e Heart of Houston, you’re close enough to try every spot on the list!

P.S. What’s local restaurant do you think has star quality? We’d love to know.

When I first started writing about wine, I was almost strictly focused on France; I speak the language, I lived there for a time, and that is where I really fell in love with the grape in its fermented form. Gradually, however, Italy started to win me over. From its relative lack of pretention to its seemingly endless list of indigenous grapes, Italy offers an impressive array of options for wine lovers.

I recently returned from a trip to Italy, but this one was slightly different. Instead of revisiting the more well-known wine regions of Tuscany, Barolo, the Veneto (Prosecco), or even Sicily, I opted for three lesser-known regions in the northern half of the country.

My trip started at a lovely villa in the hills of Umbria, the only landlocked region in Italy, and it was glorious. Not nearly as visited as its immediate neighbor to the west (Tuscany), Umbria is every bit as steeped in history, architecture, and natural beauty. There is also a rich wine history in the region, mostly centered around the town of Montefalco where the tannic Sagrantino grape reigns.  Many of those wines need a decade or more of cellar time, but blends are becoming more prevalent and the whites (Trebbiano, Grechetto) are impressive. Look for producers such as Paolo Bea (traditional) and Le Cimate (modern) among a slew of producers. Not to miss: Assisi (of St. Francis fame) is perhaps the city to visit, but I found nearby Gubbio and Spoleto far less touristy and worthy of exploration.

The next stop on my journey was the sparkling wine region of Franciacorta. Compared to most other wine regions in Italy, Franciacorta is tiny, and when it is put up against other sparkling wine regions, it is really tiny. Prosecco produces around 700 million bottles of bubbles every year and Champagne makes right around 250 million. Franciacorta? A mere 20 million. The region is not lacking, however, in natural beauty. While Lago d’Iseo does not attract as many foreign tourists as the other lakes nearby (Como, Maggiore, Garda), it is stunning; there is a reason why it is the preferred lake of most Italians. The wines of Franciacorta are made in the same way as in Champagne , but usually they are both more affordable and every bit as tasty. Some of my favorite producers: Barone Pizzini, one of the pioneers in the region, family owned Ferghettina, and tiny but outstanding producer Corte Fusia.

The last stop on my trip was the town of Alba, usually used as a home base for the exploration of Piedmont’s world famous wine regions of Barolo and Barbaresco. This time around, I focused on Roero, by far the lesser known of the three. NOT TOO LONG AGO, growers in the region resurrected the ancient local white variety, Arneis, which produces a fantastic dry, crisp wine, perfect for Houston summers. The reds, which can be hard to find in the U.S., come from the Nebbiolo (as do Barbaresco and Barolo), but the wines here are fruity, fresh, fun, and far less expensive than its more famous cousins. But what I really love about the region? While the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco are chockful of manicured vines only broken up by the picturesque historic hilltop towns, Roero’s landscape is a hodgepodge of many different crops, pastures, and orchards that seem to provide insight as to what all of Italy looked like for centuries. Some top producers include Malvirà and Bruno Giacosa but look out for the up and coming Marco Riva, his passion is unparalleled.

Well, that wraps up my summer travel to Italy, for more on my adventures, check out my website: thedrunkencyclist.com

Houston Restaurant Weeks™ also announced today that the first round of 2025 menus are now live! Diners can visit the website to view a partial list of participants, their menus, and start making reservations. Additional restaurants will be added to the website through August 1st, with around 400 restaurants expected to participate this year! This year, The Cleverley Stone Foundation has modified donation amounts to $1, $3, and $5 per Houston Restaurant Weeks meal sold in response to the rising costs of goods the restaurant industry has been hit with in recent months. The lower donation amounts per meal will help operators through a difficult time, while still generating significant revenue for the Houston Food Bank.

Now in its 22nd year, Houston Restaurant Weeks is the largest annual fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank and has made a monumental impact by raising over $22 million dollars to date. The Houston Food Bank is able to turn every dollar donated into three meals, which equates to over 68 million meals for food-insecure Houstonians. Expect an extensive list of Houston’s hottest, newest, and most popular restaurants, all joining forces for Houston’s most anticipated foodie
