A LETTER FROM – EDITOR “What is F most rigorous law of our being? Growth.” — Mark Twain
Growth can be a controversial thing. One thing growth isn’t, however, is regression. To paraphrase Dylan, if you’re not busy being born, you’re busy dying. With this philosophy in mind, the quarterly print publication formerly known as the San Antonio Beer Zine is greeting 2017 as the SA Beer Magazine, and we couldn’t be more excited. After a successful inaugural year, we are moving forward and building upon what we established over Issues 1-4 in 2016. Our transition to the SA Beer Magazine is not just a name change. It’s a full re-branding, and more. Our name change (however slight) coincides with additional changes to the printed product itself. While we’re maintaining the magazine’s current dimensions, SA Beer Magazine contains an increased page count that allows us to include more content, an upgrade in paper quality (UV coating), and the addition of a spine to give the magazine a sturdier feel and an improved appearance. Our biggest new content feature is the addition of a brewery directory. This directory will appear in every issue and consist of a 12-page listing with all the breweries and brewpubs (and their pertinent information) that are in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Moreover, this directory furthers our mission as San Antonio’s exclusive craft beer publication to represent the local scene professionally and objectively. Before moving forward, one more thing: Thank you to everyone that supported our magazine and helped make 2016 a success. We are forever grateful to our loyal readership and hope that you embrace our growth as much as we do. Onward!
¡Salud! – JoMando Cruz

Texas Barbecue There’s nothing like the smell of a barbecue pit on a sunny Texas day. When that rich, smoked meat contacts your taste buds, you want to wash it down with a good, sturdy beer. One of my favorite BBQ spots is The Granary ‘Cue & Brew (they brew their own beer!). You can make a strong case for any one of their beers as a good pairing for their legendary ‘cue plates, but my personal favorite is their rye saison. An elaborate medley of spice and earth, this beer is the perfect companion to a smoked brisket and sausage plate. Tex-Mex Cuisine San Antonio is a city that lives and breathes Tex-Mex cuisine. Women of CRAFT BEER By: Jennifer Alejos | Photography by: JoMando Cruz
Don’t take this article the wrong way. Men are great and so is craft beer. That’s my disclaimer for the rest of the words across the following pages. If you haven’t noticed, there has been a steady increase of estrogen filling up your closest watering hole (innuendo not intended). We’re here, get used to it. But don’t resent us, and whatever you do, don’t belittle us when we’re choosing a beer at the bar. 9ê q ê êđóêÏóɊ ģóèºê Ąº ³ºĸêÏđºáĩ è ÞÏêÆ đÌºÏĄ è ĄÞ Ïê đ̺ Ą Äđ «ººĄ industry. Compared to just a few years ago, there are more women in leadership roles as bartenders, beer representatives, and brewmasters. The upcoming opening of Künstler Brewing will introduce brewmaster Vera Deckard to San Antonio’s blossoming craft beer industry. Opening a brewery wasn’t an overnight epiphany for Vera; a shopping purchase inspired her. After buying a book on home brewing for her husband, Vera decided to crack open the spine and take a look for herself. “When I was opening it up to inscribe it, I started reading it and became ÏêđĄÏÆėº³ɐ z̺ ĢºĄĩ êºĨđ èóĄêÏêÆ 9 Ì ³ ĈÌóĀĀÏêÆ áÏĈđ óÄ Ĉđėĵ 9 ģ Ĉ ÆóÏêÆ đó «Ąºģɐ zÌ đ ģ Ĉ èĩ ĸĄĈđ «ĄºģɊɪ ºĄ Ĉ ϳɐ º ê ºĨĀºđ «ĄºģɢđÏÄėá đÌÏêÆĈ ÄĄóè GěêĈđáºĄ Ĉóóêɐ Ió đº³ Ïê qóėđÌđóģêɊ Künstler (the German word for “artist”) is slated to open around April – just in time for Fiesta. “I wanted a place where the neighborhood could come together and meet, have fun, and have good conversation over a good beer. These ladies know exactly what they want when they approach any bar counter and are more than happy to make a recommendation or two. We met during happy hour and talked about the group while pondering the age-old question: “If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, does it matter what type of beer we drink?” “We’re an organization that educates women in craft beer” is a favorite saying of GPO member Jackie Romero. Group lead Tracy Hungate put it bluntly, “Yeah, I run a beer group.” Meet these two chapter members in person and you’d understand the statement “let them beer you.”

Craft beer culture is changing due to the increasing presence of women in the brewing industry. What other way is there to get women on board with craft beer than by having it sold by other women? A large number of the brewery representatives in San Antonio and the surrounding area are women, something not lost on Girls Pint Out. ɩ9đɭĈ ĈººÏêÆ đÌ đ ģóèºê Ąº óèÏêÆ Ïê ê³ ĀĄóèóđÏêÆ «ººĄ ÛėĈđ Ĉ ĸºĄºáĩ as other people with their knowledge. When I used to go to bars I used to hear guys say, ‘you’re not going to like that.’ I mean, there’s really no other stereotype other than we don’t know what we’re drinking,” Tracy said.

NEWMANS’ FRIENDLY SPOTS By: Brady Phelps | Photography by: JoMando Cruz Jody Newman was working at USAA and her husband Steve was in PEO sales before he lost his job. After some time spent applying for other positions in the same field, he decided to open an icehouse in the Southtown neighborhood instead. “When we started The Friendly Spot, it was meant to be Southtown’s backyard,” Steve said. “Your kids get to play, you get to have a beer and talk to your friends...have some food and relax. We have people that get here when we open and they don’t leave until several hours later,” Steve said. “And it’s not because they’re sitting at the bar drinking the whole time.” Jody elaborated: “The concept was a neighborhood ice house. We were going to sell beer, but I don’t think beer was going to be as centric to the business.” That, however, very quickly changed.

About 90 days in, Jody explained, they decided on installing a draft system—an expensive endeavor that resulted in Steve deciding to instead build the draft system himself. The Friendly Spot was at the forefront, as Jody put it, of some resistance to business development in the neighborhood. “It’s not been super-friendly over the past 10 years. I don’t think that’s a big secret; hopefully I’m not insulting [anyone] by saying that,” Jody laughed. The Friendly Spot initially received an unfriendly welcome from a few residents and business owners in the King William District. A 2011 San Antonio Current article about the dynamic between businesses, residents, and the King William Association said the police were called to The Friendly Spot 25 times during an 18-month span between 2010 and 2011 (without a single citation given). In 2012, a group of nearby residents, along with former owner Rene Guerrero, protested The Friendly Spot’s TABC license renewal, citing general disturbances and noise violations. However, The Friendly Spot was backed by a reputable group of supporters: then-State Representative Mike Villarreal; then-District 1 Councilman (and initial Friendly Spot investor) Diego Bernal; Ben Brewer, thenCEO of Downtown Alliance; Darryl Byrd, former CEO of SA2020; and Bonham Academy PTA President Jennifer Hussey. Hussey explained the Newmans’ crucial role in hosting or executing several of Bonham Academy’s events, as well as using their connections to boost fundraising, since The Friendly Spot’s opening. Another individual wrote that The Friendly Spot was “truly a community-minded business” and accused the petitioners of not contributing to the neighborhood. They turned the old Acapulco Drive Inn into a food truck park with over a dozen beers on tap called Alamo Street Eats. “It’s a passion project,” Jody said. “We like the food trucks; we like the environment it brings. We like the ability to help people become entrepreneurs, because it has brought a lot to our lives. We like being a part of other people having the same opportunity.” They also partnered with Jason and Jake Dady to revive B&D Icehouse, a barbecue joint just across the street from The Friendly Spot. (They used to say B&D stood for Beard & Dady – a reference to Steve’s long beard – but now it’s BBQ & Draft.) “People ask if I’m concerned about all this extra competition,” Steve said, regarding the growing nightlife in Southtown. “And that’s when I go, ‘I just opened a beer place across the street from my beer place.’”
“We like – ability v help people become entrepreneurs, because it has brought a lot v our lives. ”
“Southtown has a core of residents who love this neighborhood,” Jody remarked. “It has a loyalty factor to it. The Newmans are just the third owners in Hills & Dales’ 50 years of operation. The original idea was to see if Hills & Dales could be properly rejuvenated before deciding whether to turn the location into a second Friendly Spot. However, it’s since become clear that Hills & Dales has its own unique history that they fully intend on preserving. Justin Vitek, owner of On the Rocks pub, has recently come on as an operating partner. Jodi says that Vitek’s passion for Helotes is comparable to the Newmans’ devotion to Southtown, which makes him an excellent choice to oversee the daily operations. The Newmans hope that Hills & Dales can bring the same dynamic to the area that The Friendly Spot brings to Southtown—a family friendly atmosphere and a diverse selection of beer. “Just like Southtown needs a Friendly Spot,” Jodi claimed, “that part of town needs a locally owned, friendly spot. We envision that being Hills & Dales.”

BLUE STAR BREWING CO. By: Collette Orquiz | Photography by: JoMando Cruz If it wasn’t for a lager beer, Blue Star Brewing Co. might not exist. You can shake your head all you want, but craft beer enthusiasts, nerds, and snobs can’t deny that owner Joey Villarreal has been doing something right to keep the doors open for 21 years. We all have our favorite style, and Joey’s is a lager. Joey got his start in a biology lab, when he and a few coworkers began to dabble in homebrewing. Shortly thereafter, he opened Joey’s, a bar that’s been on the St. Mary’s Strip since 1988. He used the bar’s upstairs patio to brew. However, violence in the area caused business to dwindle, leading Joey to consider a new venture. Î

Blue Star’s lineup includes a little bit of everything: lagers, IPAs, a barleywine, a stout, wheat beer, and a handful of sours. The Raspberry Geyser is an easy sour to fall in love with. Brewed with organic raspberries and aged for two years, it’s one of Joey’s favorites, though he can’t really choose just one. “I joke with people that Raspberry Geyser is my breakfast beer instead of orange juice. Success hasn’t always been easy, but he’s pleased to be making a living doing what he enjoys. Joey owns several other businesses under the Blue Star name including a bicycle company, ice house, and Blue Star Provisions, a small grocery store. Joey has considered opening a production facility (and he’ll “never say never”), but he prefers to focus on the brewpub. “I want to build up our brand as best we can and see what happens. DIRECTORY of Breweries If you only take a moment to look (it’s in a book), you’d realize that San Antonio is a prime location for exploring a wide-ranging selection of craft breweries and brewpubs. And that isn’t even counting Austin’s offerings. However, the reality is that most people don’t take that look. Or worse, they don’t even know that they should look. With that in mind, we’ve taken that look for you and created a directory of San Antonio’s vibrant and growing brewery and brewpub scene. To be clear, this directory highlights places that brew beer, from production facilities with taprooms to brewpubs with food programs. We’ve divided the directory by region, including a section for places outside of the city limits (still not including Austin). This directory will evolve along with the city’s beer scene. So as long as you take that look (in this book), you’ll see San Antonio’s breweries and brewpubs listed in every issue. All you must do is decide which one you want to visit next. Cheers!

Boerne Brewery is focused on making beer that everyone can enjoy and that residents of the Texas Hill Country can be proud of. A closed- container manufacturing facility, Boerne Brewery's goal is to remain small enough that they can maintain a personal and active role in the community; any growth is carefully measured.
Family owned and operated, Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. is a place to kick back and meet your neighbors in a familyfriendly atmosphere while enjoying house-brewed beer and eating farmfresh pub food.
