It is my pleasure to personally welcome you to Roswell. More than 25 years ago, my wife Carol and I brought our family here. Immediately we were struck by the friendliness of the residents. People look you in the eye, smile and wave, or shake your hand. No one is a stranger for long in Roswell. Roswell is a charming community with great weather, which allows our residents the ability to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities for much of the year. Whether you choose scuba diving at Bottomless Lakes State Park, hitting the links at one of our three exciting golf courses, hiking at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge — a renowned bird sanctuary — or running a 5K or marathon during one of the multiple races Roswell hosts, you will never find yourself looking for ways to be physically active. Our award-winning Parks Departments maintain Cielo Grande Soccer Complex, a firstrate softball complex, the Spring River Zoo and miles of walking and bike trails throughout the city. 6

Roswell also has a thriving performing and visual arts scene. The Roswell Little Theatre, Way Way Off-Broadway and the Roswell Symphony Orchestra bring great performances to our community. You can see works by renowned American artists Georgia O’Keefe, Peter Hurd and others at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. I’d also encourage you to visit the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, voted one of the best museums in New Mexico. Roswell is, without a doubt, an eclectic community. You will truly experience Roswell’s small-town feeling by attending one of the many yearly events such as MainStreet Roswell Farmer’s Market, Roswell’s Cinco de Mayo Festival, the Jazz Festival, and the Electric Light Parade just to name a few. In the fall, the Eastern New Mexico State Fair, which begins with an impressive parade down Main Street, is truly a traditional event that brings together the entire community. Roswell is decidedly a probusiness community with a diverse commercial industry. The agriculture and dairy industries are dynamic. Leprino Foods is one of the largest cheese manufacturing plants in the world. Roswell is home to many independent oil and gas companies, and aviationrelated companies flourish at the Roswell Air Center. The Air Center also offers our residents the

ability to fly from our community to anywhere in the world via American Airlines flights to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix. In addition, we are home to the New Mexico Military Institute. NMMI is one of the premier college prep institutions. Young people come from all over the world to attend. It serves students from the ninth grade through junior college. We are also home to the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), which trains law enforcement and judicial officers from around the world. With two hospitals and a cadre of skilled doctors, Roswell can meet your medical needs with first-class care. There is, of course, the continuing debate about what really did happen in 1947. Was it a UFO or a weather balloon? We invite you to help solve the mystery as a new resident of Roswell.

It’s “The prettiest little town west of the Pecos” Roswell, in Chaves County, is home to roughly 50,000 people, 100,000 dairy cows — yes, we have more dairy cows than we do people — a few little green men and a flourishing Air Center, (known now as the Roswell Air Center) that was once the heartbeat of Roswell in the early ‘40s to mid-’60s when it was the Walker Air Force Base. We are also known and originally founded for our vast agriculture industry, we’re more than just dairies. And, of course, our wildly popular tourism attractions that put us on the map over 70 years ago, the mysterious UFO Incident, which we celebrate every year, the first weekend in July, and bring life back to those poor souls that didn’t survive the infamous crash. That is just a snippet of Roswell and what she has to offer. I do believe we have the most amazing history story in all of New Mexico. Don’t take my word for it, instead

take a stroll back in time at the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico and the Archives Center. We are very proud of our rich history and our story, so much so, that we have a beautiful section of town dedicated as the Historical Roswell District and many museums to show for it as well, which are listed throughout this guide. Our economy is just as unique as our city. We take great pride that our community began as a farming and ranching community and the agriculture industry is the root of our existence here in Chaves County. However, over the years Roswell has evolved into health care, dairy, aerospace, education, oil and gas, international law enforcement training and so much more. Altogether, our local industries make Roswell one of the strongest and most diverse economies in the state.

Roswell is fun! There are so many wonderfully fun and exciting things to do here, and we have a full calendar to prove it. Craft shows that feature local artists and potters to festivals that celebrate and unite us no matter your culture. Roswell is home to a wonderland of beautiful parks and walking/bike trails, golf courses, and a plethora of outdoor recreational activities. The weather is nothing but sunshine more than 300 days out of the year to enjoy all these wonderful recreational activities. I can go on and on about how great a community Roswell is and I can boast about the people in this community and how generous and supportive everyone is, or I can simply invite you to plan a trip and see for yourself, and maybe, just maybe you will see what we see and that is: Roswell is a wonderful community to raise a family, live, shop, work and play.

However, over the years, the mission and the responsibilities have changed and grown considerably. The staff at the Chamber is versatile and skilled on the planning and executing of several community networking events and working in partnership with the city of Roswell and Chaves County along with many other organizations in our city. The History of Roswell

Famous people, cattle barons, outlaws ... an ‘alien’ or two?

rchaeologists, to this day, are still putting the puzzle pieces together when it comes to understanding the complete story of this region’s past. Inhabited long before the native tribes of Apaches, Navajo and Comanche farmed and hunted, this world had many stories to tell. The harsh landscapes of the Southwest were formed millions of years ago, when today’s New Mexico was still

became a “New World,” the early pioneer days saw the arrival of both Spanish and European explorers in the area. The first Europeans to traverse this land were part of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado’s expedition (1540-1542). Research shows Coronado was actually looking for the fabled “Seven Cities of Gold.” While he did not find those on his quest, Coronado — and the missionary monks that followed — brought sheep, horses, pepper trees and grape plants.

part of the supercontinent Pangaea, and an ocean covered this now-desert region. Although mountains that formed during that time are now just memories, they left some features behind. There are treasures still being found that include fossils, flint rock, Stone Age tools, and shells. Long before the settlers of the “New World” arrived, the mysterious indigenous Anasazi (Navajo for Ancient Ones) had a thriving civilization throughout the region. There has been much debate among historians and archaeologists about why this society vanished in the 13th century. As time went on, and America

These items would alter the Comanche and Apache people forever. Not only would they become the first mounted tribes of the Plains, but the Navajos would become the most skilled artists and weavers to be found. The first non-indigenous settlers in the area around Roswell were a group of pioneers from Missouri. In 1865, they attempted to start a settlement 15 miles southwest of what is now Roswell, calling it Missouri Plaza. But history shows they were forced to abandon the site for lack of water. (This would later be seen as “ironic” thanks to a discovery made in 1890.)

The first documented settlement after Missouri Plaza was mentioned in 1867 by the official surveyor of the U.S., a settlement along the Rio Hondo known as Chihuahuita, little Chihuahua. It became a campsite base for the Goodnight-Loving Trail, which brought Anglo ranchers to the area. It was in 1869, when Van C. Smith (a businessman from Omaha, Nebraska) and his partner, Aaron Wilburn, constructed two adobe buildings and began what is now Roswell. The two buildings were used as the settlement’s general store, a post office, and sleeping quarters for paying guests. It was just three years later that Smith filed a claim with the federal government for the land around the buildings, and on Aug. 20, 1873, he took on the role of the town’s first postmaster. Van C. Smith was the son of Roswell Smith, a prominent lawyer in Lafayette, Indiana, which is how “Roswell” got its name. A very famous man was also a part of this land at the time Van Smith first “founded” the town. He was a cattle baron; his name was John Simpson Chisum. Known by some to be the “toughest man west of the Pecos,” Chisum was one of the first Texas ranchers to send his herds to New Mexico, planting the first economic seed that expanded Roswell. He obtained land along the Pecos River and eventually became the owner of a large property referred to as the “Jingle Bob Ranch.” Chisum also played a part in a legend that’s still talked about to this day. Chisum and one of his business associates, Alexander McSween,

were principal figures in the Lincoln County War. It was Lewis Wallace who proclaimed an amnesty for all those involved in what became this famous feud, when he took office as governor of the New Mexico Territories on Oct. 1, 1878. People still talk about this today and, depending on whose descendants you agree with, Billy the Kid is seen as either a villain during the war, or a tragic hero who ended up dead at the hand of his former friend, Sheriff Pat Garrett. (Lifesize statues of both Chisum and Garrett are located near the Chaves County Courthouse in downtown Roswell.) Roswell’s true “boom” came not from the discovery of oil or gas, but water. It is stated that a noted shopkeeper in Roswell, Nathan Jaffa, actually found water by accident. It was in 1890, after growing tired of having to travel to the river in order to obtain water, Jaffa drilled in his backyard on Richardson Avenue and water came bubbling to the surface. Roswell was found to be sitting on top of one of the largest artesian wells in the country. Three years later, in 1893, Roswell became the seat of Chaves County and a railroad was built for the ever-increasing number of people coming to town. Home to New Mexico Military

Institute since 1891, Roswell has offered education to many talented men and women over time. Among NMMI’s most notable graduates are Conrad Hilton, Roger Staubach, and Sam Donaldson. Will Rogers had a son who also went to NMMI, and once said that Roswell was “the prettiest little town west of the Pecos.” In the 1930s, famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, along with financier Harry Guggenheim, were looking to find a location for the scientist Dr. Robert H. Goddard’s rocket experiments. Roswell was chosen and Goddard remained here for 12 years working on the experimental and record-breaking rocket launches, without which the United States might not have won the “race to the moon” and begun early space exploration. During World War II, a prisoner-of-war camp was located in nearby Orchard Park. The German POWs were said to have loved the area, and were responsible for major infrastructure work in Roswell. Roswell was kept on the map and became even more well-known through various “events” that occurred in the 20th Century. One such moment that eventually turned into a global fascination was the alleged UFO crash that occurred in 1947. It was the report of an “object” that crashed, allegedly an extraterrestrial spacecraft and its alien occupants. Since the late 1970s, the incident has been the subject of controversy and conspiracy theories. UFO proponents maintain: It was an alien craft found; its occupants were cap-

tured; and the military then engaged in a cover-up. All this spawned a slew of books, movies, and TV shows. Whether you “believe” or not, this famous incident has allowed Roswell to benefit from the interest in the possibility of “alien life” that seems to increase each year. Walker Air Force Base, located three miles south of the central business district of Roswell, was first opened in 1941 as an Army Air Corps flying school. Playing pivotal roles during World War II and the post-war era, in 1967, Walker Air Force Base was decommissioned. The former base is now home to the

Roswell Air Center. Thanks to a gas and oil boom, the 21st Century has seen Roswell diversify many times. Roswell has definitely shown through each decade it’s a city that can transform itself. Myriad local events, some well-known across the U.S., draw visitors to the city throughout the year: From the farmers’ market held outside the historic courthouse to diverse festivals and gatherings, such as the Piñata & Chile Cheese Festival, Dragonfly Festival and, for music lovers, the annual Jazz Festival. lacticon, when tens of thousands “invade” the city in order to learn about the famous “Roswell Incident.” Roswell has a passion for competitive sporting events. Marathons and hikes for beginners and the more experienced are numerous and popular. When Eastern New Mexico State Fair comes around, visitors and locals flock to the fairgrounds for displays, food, carnival rides and family fun. The fair also provides competition among growers: With a growing season that is almost year-round, thanks to abundant water and fertile soil, local crops excel, allowing farmers and garden hobbyists to earn blue ribbons in categories ranging from

flowers to vegetables. One of the benefits of living in Roswell is that all four seasons can be enjoyed. Roswell’s winters are usually mild, but if you enjoy skiing, just two hours away sit the ski resorts in Ruidoso and Mescalero. Spring blossoms early, and mild temperatures are perfect for utilizing bike paths, having picnics in the many parks, or walking the trails. Summer is hot, but because the high desert of southeast New Mexico provides a dry heat, temperatures feel moderate. Golfers can find time to tee off on the greens of the local golf courses. To cool off, locals can play on the beach at nearby Bottomless Lakes State Park or Bitter Lakes, where canoeing, camping, fishing and even bird watching can be enjoyed. When looking for a residence in Roswell, from townhouses to apartments to family homes, the city offers a little of everything. The Roswell housing market has been stable and affordable. The Roswell Air Center

he Roswell Air Center at the south end of the city has a storied past, having a major role in World War II history as the Roswell Army Air Field and playing a part in the infamous “Roswell Incident,” when debris from an unidentified flying object found on a New Mexico ranch was taken to the airbase. In 1947, the Army Air Corps became the U.S. Air Force, and the base was renamed the Walker Air Force Base. When the military left in 1967, the city of Roswell became the owner of the 4,600-acre airfield and base property. Its commercial airport has grown to include daily airline service to and from Phoenix and Dallas, serving about 56,000 passengers a year. Rental car services are housed in the airport terminal building, which also has The Flight Lounge, a bar and eatery. The city of Roswell is working on a terminal building expansion and upgrade, parking improvements and runway enhancements. The Roswell Air Center is also a commercial and industrial hub for aviation-related companies, aircraft testing, dirigible design, security and intelligence training, and other commercial enterprises. Also located on the acreage of the former military base are parks and residential housing, the federal International Law Enforcement Academy, the campus of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, local offices of state and federal agencies, a charter middle school, the New Mexico State Rehabilitation Center, a fire station,

the National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, the Roswell Job Corps and a National Guard Armory.

Roswell is ideally located for travel throughout the region A number of major roads lead to Roswell, including Highways 285, 380 and 70, which all intersect here. Following Highways 70/380 west leads to the Hondo Valley, the favored residence of 20th Century painter Peter Hurd. Highway 70 splits with 380 shortly before the mountain town of Ruidoso. If one continues along Highway 70, it will eventually lead to Tularosa, near Alamogordo, with Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands National Park. If one chooses to take the historic route, Highway 380 continues west through Lincoln, known for the adventures of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Wars, Capitan (home of Smokey Bear) and toward Socorro, where it intersects with Interstate 25. Highway 70 East takes the traveler to Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base. Highway 285 provides the most direct route to Santa Fe, New Mexico’s capital, and to Interstate 40, which leads to Albuquerque. If you do not want to drive, there are cab services and a city and Greyhound bus system in Roswell. For those who would like to use a less traditional means of transport ... one can always wait for the next UFO out of town.

We believe we are the catalyst in front and behind the camera in attracting new companies while supporting those already investing in our communities. The RCCEDC is comprised of a 25-member Board of Directors of local business and governmental professionals who, through their business acumen, contribute daily to developmental opportunities that support all citizens of the Chaves County region. Roswell: Where business and industry thrive

he area was “built” on agriculture, but other employment sectors, running the gamut from tourism to energy production, are also big contributors. That gives Roswell and Chaves County a broad base from which to continue an upward trajectory established by decades of growth and innovation. Agriculture has been a mainstay of the local economy since the first settlers arrived here in the late 1800s. From those early days, industries revolving around livestock have coexisted with orchards and farms, all supplied by an aquifer that has maintained Roswell with more available water than any other community in New Mexico. The dairy industry here is among the largest in the country. Local agriculture produces cotton and wool, feed to support livestock, and an array of food for human consumption. Aviation is another industry that’s shown its potential thanks to continued development of the Roswell Air Center. The former Walker Air Force Base has a 13,000-foot runway, built to support the large planes of World War II, and can handle vir-

Companies like AerSale — which does just about everything related to planes except manufacture them, and Dean Baldwin, which paints airplanes — have been instrumental in maintaining Roswell’s economy. The Air Center’s commercial airport has daily service to and from Phoenix and Dallas, and serves about 56,000 passengers a year.

The U.S. Navy routinely sends pilots here for training, thanks in large part to the excellent weather. Another strong industry in Roswell is health care. Roswell has two hospitals that maintain the latest health care technologies available, and the industry employs thousands of people locally. Roswell has a variety of educational offerings, thanks to a strong local college and numerous workforce training agencies. Between the Roswell Independent School District, New Mexico Military Institute and Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, among other local institutions, education also counts as a major employer in Roswell. White, construction on the home was completed the same year New Mexico became a state. To step inside is to take a step back in time. Filled with antiques and artifacts (many contributed by Chaves County residents), the home offers displays of early prominent citizens who made Roswell what it is today. The Lt. General Douglas McBride Museum (575-624-8050) is located on the campus of the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) at 101 W. College Blvd., on the second floor of Luna Hall. The McBride Museum offers displays that concentrate on the history of NMMI. The NMMI Hall of Fame, a collection of outstanding alumni, is also located in the museum and recognizes the achievements of graduates as they

he headlines in the Roswell Daily Record in July 1947 frightened some, confused others and, quite literally, brought the city of Roswell to everyone’s attention. Over the decades, the events that followed have been studied endlessly. There are still more questions than answers, but one thing remains unmistakable when it comes to the famous alleged UFO crash in Roswell: Something definitely did happen that night, and it has gone on to spawn countless TV shows, movies, books, investigations and more. There is a place on the map devoted to believers, scholars, and others who have fallen in love with the other-worldly premise of aliens walking among us, and who are willing to travel in order to find out more: The International UFO Museum & Research Center in Roswell. The first week of July, visitors fill the town and join with locals in celebration. Enjoyment is had by all age groups, who are treated to a funfilled weekend featuring alien costume contests, carnival rides, great food, live entertainment, Fourth of July festivities and an unforgettable evening light-parade down Main Street. Over 25 years, AMoCA has grown, and today houses more than 500 diverse works of art to be enjoyed in 12 galleries set within their 22,000-square-foot exhibition space. A favorite venue of the Roswell community, AMoCA holds events such as jazz concerts and recitals. Robert H. Goddard Planetarium

A ‘must-see’ destination dedicated to a true space pioneer The Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, located on the northwest side of the Roswell Museum and Art Center at 1011 N. Richardson Ave., features a state-of-the-art, full-dome digital theater system that brings the story of the stars to life in dramatic fashion. Public shows are presented Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m., and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m., and each show includes a full-dome fi lm accompanied by a star presentation lasting up to 40 minutes. Famous for offering one-of-a-kind events, such as the Laser Light Show that occurs during the UFO Festival, the planetarium also holds a myriad of star shows, multi-media presentations, and offers hands-on activities that children and families can enjoy. Great musicians provide city, region with unforgettable experiences

eautiful music is always in the air in Roswell thanks to the hard work and talent of the Roswell Symphony Orchestra (RSO), dedicated to the citizens of Roswell and all of Southeast New Mexico. It began in 1959, in the basement of the First Methodist Church. The determination and passion one group shared to provide Roswell with a professional-sounding orchestra brought the RSO into being. Now in its 60th season, musicians come from major cities within a 200-mile radius of Roswell to be a part of this stellar group. In RSO’s first season (1960-1961), three concerts were held in New Mexico Military Institute’s grand Pearson Auditorium. Since then, the “season” has greatly expanded. Opening with the free Labor Day “Pops” Concert, the orchestra annually “thanks” citizens for their unending support. In addition to the concert, an “instrument petting zoo” is held to allow children a chance to speak with the musicians about their instruments and even play them, providing a path for the young people of

Roswell to get involved in the music experience. The Subscription Concert Series, featuring world renowned guest artists, is a series of five concerts performed October through May. The RSO also focuses on students with their “Young Person’s Concert.” This program provides 800 fourth-grade students in Southeast New Mexico a chance to hear some of the classical works penned by some of the world’s most beloved composers. For older students comes the “Shadow Experience,” a program that allows the best musicians from high schools around the area to perform with the orchestra and even be mentored. The first Roswell Jazz Festival (RJF) was held in October 2006. Over the years the festival has grown into a widely acclaimed, world-class event. It is held annually the third week of October, Wednesday through Sunday, across multiple local venues. Events spotlight the artistry of jazz musicians from across the country. Increasing the sense of community by providing all participants with the opportunity to share and enjoy RJF’s artistic endeavors, the festival is a fantastic place to discover jazz roots and have a great time. The festival also contributes to the community through an educational element. Attracting young people to the arts is truly important in this technological age, and sometimes can be a daunting task. However, the RJF “School of Jazz” has proven to be the perfect venue for

inspiring creative minds. Roswell Independent School District A tradition and vision for the future

Education has a long tradition in Roswell and Chaves County, ever since the fi rst school teacher set foot into town during the early pioneer days. Many children came through the halls of North Junior High in Roswell, which was built in the 1930s. It was renamed Pueblo Junior High in 1963. Today, it is home to Roswell Independent School District’s main office. RISD grew with each generation, adapting, upgrading and giving the students the best education available at the time. Today, the district’s modern facilities are well-equipped for teaching the next generation. The district includes 12 elementary schools, four high schools, four middle schools, Parkview Early Literacy Center and RISD’s elementary arts program. High school students have several choices in advancing their education before entering college. RISD offers dual-credit classes by working closely with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, therefore giving high school students the opportunity for a head start in their college education. The student population with RISD is approximately 10,000. While other districts had to cut sports and art programs over the years, RISD planned ahead

with the support of local benefactors and the public. Its sports programs play a major role to keep the students physically fit, and RISD schools have won many state championships in football, basketball and competitive cheer through the years. Other sports included are crosscountry training, boys’ and girls’ soccer and volleyball. RISD schools offer a vast number of fi ne arts programs as well — more than any other in the state. High school choir and band perform regularly at concerts throughout the area. Pre-K as well as elementary students have the chance to express themselves, learning skills in visual art and — unique to the state — internationally renowned artists from the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program often volunteer their time in sharing their passion for the arts with the students. Flag football players descend on Roswell to test skills — or just have a little fun Every Memorial Day Weekend, Roswell is host to the “Hike It & Spike It” 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament. This three-day festival of fun is the world’s largest annual flag football tournament, and each year, players of all ages and levels of expertise come to Roswell in order to take part in the challenge. With more than 600 teams (4,000-plus players), participants flock to Roswell from all regions of the United States to battle it out on the gridiron of Cielo Grande Recreation Area. Hundreds of volunteers work together to prepare the more than 40 fields utilized during the event, and when the games begin, the cheering of more than 30,000 spectators can be heard loud and clear. “Hike It & Spike It” has been a huge success because of the partnerships that have been forged between the public and private sectors. The event gets more and more popular and continues to grow, positively impacting Roswell’s economy, and benefiting a worthy cause. A large donation is presented to the United Way of Chaves County each year. When the champions are crowned on Sunday afternoon, the Character Counts! Pursuing Victory with Honor and Down-and-Out awards are presented in every division to the first-, second- and third-place winners. There is even a Best Dressed Award given to the top three in both adult and youth team categories. And for the Show Me the Money division, the bestof-the-best flag football teams from across the country compete for the big payout, with first through third place awarded cash prizes. Sports and competition take center stage in Roswell

Sports are a huge part of life in Roswell. Athletic teams from the city’s two major public high schools, Roswell High School and Goddard High School, have, in recent years, brought numerous championship trophies home to the city. As of 2020, the Roswell Coyotes are two-time defending state football champions. Rivalries between the schools, across all sports, add a special element to the local sports landscape. Regular season games between the Coyotes and Goddard Rockets often have the feel of highstakes postseason contests. The bragging rights mean that much. The Charlie’s Angels Dance Team from Roswell High School and local high school cheerleading squads are also standout groups, and the Roswell High and Goddard High School bands are among the best New Mexico has to offer. The Charlie’s Angels have won the National Championships title three times in five years as of 2020. Both high school and junior college athletics across

multiple sports can be enjoyed at New Mexico Military Institute, where the high school team is nicknamed the Colts, and the Broncos represent the junior college. NFL Hall of Famer Roger Thomas Staubach was a freshman quarterback for the NMMI Colts in 1960. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy and become a successful NFL quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Gateway Christian Academy has also enjoyed championship success in recent years, in baseball. Roswell has its own semi-professional baseball team, the Roswell Invaders, who have won multiple Pecos League championships over the course of their existence. Merchandise bearing the Invaders’ colorful and eye-catching alien-themed logo can be seen all around town. Kids also have boundless sports opportunities in Roswell, thanks to many other local youth sports leagues. Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge Keep your eyes peeled — you never know what wonders you’ll encounter Northeast of Roswell, straddling the Pecos River, lies a true gem for those who wish to experience an oasis of natural habitats and wildlife: Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1937 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds, some might be surprised to learn that the Refuge, by protecting and providing habitats for some of New Mexico’s rarest creatures, now plays a crucial role in wetlands conservation. You’ll feel, upon entering the Refuge, that you’ve walked into an imaginary land. This is a one-of-a-kind crossroads where wetland-dependent species and desert creatures live side-by-side. The abundant water supply draws more than 350 species of birds. Add this to the 50plus species of mammals, more than 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, 20-plus types of fish, and the 100-plus species of dragonflies, and you find yourself in a fairytale created for nature lovers. Wishing to set eyes on a sandhill crane, or perhaps take a picture of that rare native fish? Well, the trails of Bitter Lake will allow you to do just that. You can choose to journey along the Butterfly Trail to view the lovely creatures; the Desert Upland Trail to experience excellent quail and songbird viewing; the North Tract (12,000plus acres), which is open to horseback riding; or take the Wildlife/Auto Tour where you can stand on the overlooks and perhaps spot a coyote, red-tail hawk, or a spiny softshell turtle along the way. Keep your eyes peeled ... you never know. One of the highlights is the Dragonfly Trail. Bitter Lake is famous for supporting one of the most diverse populations of dragonflies and damselflies in all of North America. The Dragonfly Festival is an annual event held in September at Bitter Lake that celebrates dragonflies. Trails are open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge. You can also stop by the Visitor Center, 4200 E. Pine Lodge Road (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) to find out about upcoming events and the seasonal hunting that occurs from Sept. 1 through midFebruary. Senior Citizen Organizations There are many agencies and charitable clubs in Roswell always on the lookout for volunteers. The RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) has been serving the community for more than 28 years, and specializes in matching seniors with opportunities to

volunteer, depending on interests, talent and skill. The Chaves County J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) Center provides homebound senior citizens with home delivered lunches. Other services include adult day services, housekeeping, assistance and caregiver support. Senior Circle, sponsored by Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, is open to people 50 and older. The organization offers many activities to its members. The Roswell Adult Center has been an established part of the community for more than 18 years. The center offers an array of classes and other activities. Given the range of activities for both old and young, Roswell is the perfect community for enjoying the best years of your life.

oswell is the perfect “hub” to start from to enjoy a plethora of towns, artistic communities, and historic sites all around us. In just a couple of hours, you can hike in national parks, have family fun on our lakes, and visit amazing galleries, museums, and historical places you’ve heard about since you were a child. Here is just a sample: South of Roswell

Dexter/Hagerman The small town of Dexter is not far from Roswell and is fi lled with history. A farm and ranch community, you’ll reach it by taking the Old Dexter Highway (NM2), which first began as a stagecoach route. In World War II, Roswell and Artesia housed German prisoners of war sent to southeast New Mexico. The POWs worked the land, helped with construction, and were given more freedom than other POWs. You can still see many reminders of their presence, such as the windows they crafted that are set in the Presbyterian Church. Dexter is home to the Southwestern Native Aquatic Resources & Recovery Center. The center’s objectives are to work with partners on reintroducing fish species into their native habitats; improving the quality of fish reared through research;

and, maintaining populations in the event of catastrophic loss in the wild. Just east of Dexter lies Lake Van. The site for the “Milkman Triathlon,” this camping site has an RV area, restaurant, and a swimming pool.

Artesia Artesia, once known as “Stegman,” was born in the 1880s, with the expansion of the railroad. Among its more well-known residents have been Postmaster Sally Chisum Stegman, the niece of famous cattle baron John Chisum. Legend has it Billy the Kid was in love with Sally, and would come to town to visit her. The transformation from “Stegman” to Artesia occurred in 1905. The Artesia Townsite Company and the Artesia Improvement Company had been formed by businessmen to promote settlement. Their fi rst project was to change the name to Artesia. Reason being, vast artesian wells were found just below the surface of the land. Not only did the wells draw in settlers, but the discovery of oil and gas several years later turned the little settlement into a vibrant community. A charming aspect of Artesia is its Main Street, sprinkled with unique boutiques and shops. Proud of its art community, Artesia hosts a variety of artistic, theatrical, musical, and cultural events.

The Artesia Historical Museum & Art Center is a charming space featuring area history exhibits, regional photographs, and Native American artifacts. The public library in Artesia is home to the 1952 Peter Hurd mural entitled, “The Future Belongs to Those Who Prepare for it.” (www.artesiachamber.com)

Carlsbad Many fun activities can be found in Carlsbad, one of the most well-known being Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Although not the largest caverns in the U.S., they are thought by many to be the most stunning.

Travel Tips If you’re looking for a fantastic and memorable hike, try the Natural Entrance Trail. The 1.25-mile walk is steep. The hike takes about one hour (the descent is equivalent to approximately 75 stories) from the cave entrance to “The Big Room.” Here, you have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of early explorers as you see incredible formations, like Devil’s Spring, the Whale’s Mouth, and Iceberg Rock. (www.nps.gov/cave/index.htm) Located between Carlsbad and Artesia is the southernmost lake in New Mexico, a true oasis of wildlife, water, and incredible night skies. Brantley Lake State Park offers boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking trails, exceptional bird watching, developed and primitive campsites, and restrooms with showers.
