m e g l a t coas A TEXAS
LEN HAYWARD Editor
After living on the Texas coast for more than a decade, I’ve learned a few things – the biggest one being that I really love it here in the winter and spring. It’s always fun texting friends and family in other parts of Texas or around the country to show them a 10-day forecast with highs in the lower 70s and lows in the upper 50s while they’re shoveling snow. It offers just enough chill to make things interesting but not enough to pull out the parkas. Winter and spring along the Texas coast also reveal what the area is really about. Sure, summer is the busy season, but to experience the true nature of Aransas County and the Texas Gulf Coast, you need to be here during the cooler months. It’s a time when the area comes alive in a
unique way. While we do get the occasional cold or foggy day, watching the bird migration and seeing the whooping cranes return to the Texas coast each fall is an unforgettable experience. It’s also a fantastic time for anglers. Fishing crowds are far smaller than in the summer, yet the chances of landing a great catch remain just as high. On top of that, Rockport, Fulton and Aransas County offer an array of events that keep locals and visitors busy throughout the season. Some might think of winter and spring as quiet months with little to do, but when you take a closer look, there is plenty happening ... you just have to know where to look.

Rockport Cultural Arts District continues to grow as a visual feast for travelers
LEN HAYWARD SOUTH TEXAS NEWS
Uncover Rockport’s Masterpiece
Rockport’s history runs deep, and the Rockport Cultural Arts District continues to preserve and promote that heritage yearround. Thousands of fall and winter visitors arrive to enjoy the holidays, family time, coastal fishing, or a brisk beach walk, and many head straight downtown to experience the city’s vibrant artwork. August’s 2026 Mural Fest added eight new commissioned works to the area, including five Rockport scenes on Austin Street flowerpots and a coastal life scene on the Aransas County Navigation District building. Another highlights the historical marker for Frandolig Island on the Winery by the Bay and Dog Gone Brewery building. The event’s standout piece is artist Floyd Mendoza’s
patriotic mural wrapping the generator wall at the new Aransas County Courthouse. It features a bald eagle, the American flag, the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. Beyond their immediate visual appeal, these public art pieces offer visitors a unique, interactive opportunity to chronicle their coastal journeys. As tourists explore the district on foot, the murals serve as backdrops for photos and memorymaking, encouraging guests to document their trips and share Rockport’s story across social media platforms. Combined with existing historical art downtown, these new additions enrich the visitor experience while showcasing Rockport’s unique character both to inperson guests and to audience networks across the state and beyond.

Haven Under th Tucked into a grove of Rockport’s well-known live oak trees sits a group of buildings that house dozens of different species of wild birds. From geese and ducks to pelicans and raptors, wild birds of all kinds find haven at Wings Rescue Center. Some of the birds are temporary boarders rescued by people from all walks of life and brought to the center for life-saving care. Others are permanent residents that serve as a crucial part of the center’s educational outreach, and to those who work there, they are almost like pets. No matter the species, the volunteers at Wings Rescue Center care for each bird and do their best to nurse it back to health so it can return to the wild. “If we see a bird that has what we call a ‘will to live’ and believe me, they show you, we do everything we can,” said Kay Adams, the center’s founder and president. “If they have a bummed-up wing or a bummed-up eye and cannot be released, we don’t give up on them.”
That’s why we now have eight ambassador birds. Most places would euthanize them, but that’s how we’re able to give all these community presentations.” People can bring injured birds directly to the Rockport center, or volunteers can pick them up across the Coastal Bend. The center rescued approximately 670 birds through the first eight months of 2026, with many coming from Nueces, Aransas and San Patricio counties. The organization has also received and cared for birds rescued farther out in counties such as Jim Wells, Goliad, Kleberg and Victoria, as well as referrals from local agencies such as the Rockport Police Department, local fire departments and the Aransas County Navigation District. “That first year, working out of the back of our cars, we literally took in 300 birds,” said Adams, who is originally from Leander. “We had nothing, absolutely nothing.” Located in South Rockport, the one-acre property features a cluster of outdoor enclosures and support buildings set beneath the oak
canopy. Operating for roughly a decade, the center is fully funded by donations and run entirely by volunteers, including three retired volunteers who live on-site in separate residences. Adams noted that while the center specializes in wild birds, volunteers will accept almost any species. If an injured pet or exotic bird arrives, the staff works to place it in a safe home. In late September, the center was caring for around 50 birds, with many steadily working their way back to health. As the organization moves into its second decade, its goal remains simple: help rescued birds recover and give them the opportunity to return to the wild where they belong.

The Humane Society and Adoption Center of Rockport-Fulton
CRAIG’S
The Humane Society and Adoption Center of Rockport-Fulton (HSAC), located at 1308 W. Myrtle St. in Fulton, was founded in 1988 and has been serving Aransas County since. What began in a small storefront on Texas State Highway 35 has grown into a vital community resource situated on a beautifully treed 3.5-acre campus. At the heart of the facility is the House of Hope, a 4,000-square-foot building dedicated in 2013. Today, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers provides daily care for approximately 60 dogs and puppies, along with 60 cats and kittens that have been lost, abandoned or surrendered. HSAC continues to emphasize the importance of its spay and neuter program, which has played a significant role in reducing euthanasia rates in Aransas County. The organization remains 100% privately funded and operates independently, without affiliation to any national organizations. HSAC also features Lady’s Little Pet Pantry, a free community resource located just outside the main building. Made possible through the generous support of Walmart and sponsor Lady, the pantry offers essential pet supplies at no cost to residents. Stocked with items such as pet food, collars, kennels and other necessities, Lady’s Little Pet Pantry is designed to support pet owners during times of need. The goal is to help keep pets in their homes by easing the financial burden of pet care and reducing the number of animals surrendered due to a lack of resources. HSAC officials are excited to see the pantry serve the community and remain committed to keeping it stocked for families in need. All donations made to HSAC stay within Aransas County to support local animals. For more information about adoptions or volunteer opportunities, call 361-7298186, visit rockportfultonhumanesociety. org or follow HSAC on Facebook.

The Center welcomes approximately 50,000 visits each year to a vibrant downtown campus where there is almost always something new to see, experience or do. Visitors can explore engaging exhibitions featuring regional and nationally recognized artists, discover sculpture throughout the campus, shop for original work by regional artists, take a class or workshop, enjoy live music and performances or simply spend time surrounded by creativity. The Center is also behind some of Rockport’s signature cultural experiences, including the nationally recognized Rockport Art Festival, which brings more than 140 exceptional artists and thousands of visitors to the Texas coast; the Rockport Film Festival, celebrating independent cinema from across the country; and a growing reputation for contemporary silversmithing and jewelry. But what happens throughout the campus extends well beyond the galleries. Rockport Center for the Arts helps strengthen the community’s identity as an arts destination while creating opportunities for people of all ages to participate. Thousands of area children and families take part in free arts education each year. At the same time, hundreds of artists have opportunities to exhibit their work for the public, helping ensure that creativity remains part of Rockport’s future as well as its history. Whether visiting for a weekend or returning year after year, Rockport Center for the Arts offers a wonderful way to experience what makes this coastal community distinctive: art, creativity and connection.

Aransas County Airport (RKP/KRKP), known as the “Friendliest Airport in Texas,” serves as a premier hub for business, private, charter, and recreational aviation in the Coastal Bend. The airport was established during World War II when the county leased 700 acres to the U.S. Navy in 1943. The airport later returned for public use in 1948 and was even active during the 1960s as part of the Cuban Missile Crisis in monitoring the Gulf. The airport is located at 2740 State Highway 35 N in Rockport and features two LED-lit runways (5,608 ft. x 100 ft. and 4,498 ft. x 100 ft.), more than 30 ramp tie-downs, short-term/permanent hangars, and a 24-hour automated fuel system with competitive prices. Prices are updated daily and are full service from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The airport offers crew vehicles on a first-come, firstserved basis and accepts major credit cards and AvCards. Ninety acres are available for aeronautical development via long-term ground leases, plus 197 acres for nonaeronautical uses near Copano Bay. The airport is also ideal for pilots seeking affordable access amid the area’s growth, with quick drives to waterfront homes. Visitor/pilot info Open 24/7; UNICOM 123.05, ASOS weather 119.275.
